2021 Nissan Rogue First Drive Review

- Nissan's all-new Rogue doubles down on safety features, a roomy interior, standard gadgets, and a lower price point than the primary competition. The bolder exterior is a welcome change, but the real win is the Rogue's new interior which is among the best in the segment. If you're looking for a roomy, family friendly option and you don't mind giving up performance to get a good deal, this is the right CUV for you.

I agree. A real professional!
@@johnburton2771 he doesn't look like he's reading, the info just flows. Not sure how he retains it all.
Definitely worth subscription👍 Many thanks for all your input goes to AlexOnAutos team👍
Winning!
I wouldn't have thought to put the Rogue on my shopping list for a new crossover, but this new styling has changed my mind. The comment about the comfort of the seats is a huge bonus.
Nissan seats are wonderful
I literally laughed out loud when I saw the stuffed dog in the kennel. Great visual!!!
Great video. I have a Nissan Rogue 2014. Been using it for 6 years now and I haven't encountered any problem. Very reliable car!
I like the new Nissan Rogue but still missing only one thing: 9-speed direct shift w/ torque converter automatic transmission.
Thank you, great review 👍
No one does a better job of reviewing cars in the internet, hands down the most informative and knowledgeable person without an agenda, a must before before being any new car, keep up the amazing work
Got the new rav4. Now that I'm a parent it feels like Nissan did the most thorough focus group with parents and what they want. Wider door openings, less intrusive steering wheel, sun shades (my fav), that little bit more room front passenger with car seat, back door sensors, tiered cargo area... All sounds very tempting.
I just bought my Nissan Rouge, and regret not being a Nissan auto, owner before! Amazing ride, smooth, and very beautiful to look at.
this car looks incredible inside and out! i am thoroughly impressed. i could tell nissan worked hard on this one, you can see it in small places like the 360 camera that actually is stitched instead of placed together, and the new switchgear! i assume they developed this stuff for the ariya and just put it in here too, but i'm still surprised. hoping the issues that plagued nissan in the past stay in the past!
yoink well said
They worked hard on interior because they spent zero on upgrading engine and Jatco CVT transmission. Two pretty glaring ommisions.
@@James-il3tq didn't he say the engine was new and the cvt updated lol
I noticed the "DRIVE MODE" is a switch instead of a dial. Then I saw the back door and noticed it was a front wheel model you were driving. I sell Nissans in Ohio and that was an excellent video. Very thorough.
Christopher Farley I sell Nissan in Ontario Canada. Can’t wait to get my hands on one of these this month for myself
Honestly, I really love how boxy/tall that front third of the car looks now. Takes me back to my Xterra days a little bit ❤️
Thank you as always for your detailed review. I am seriously considering buying this one.
Finally someone on TH-cam has pointed out the rear turning lights aren't LED. THANK YOU Alex and that's attention to detail #Nissan.
Great new look and quilted leather seats
Like the new Sentra, the CVT and lack of power will keep this from the podium in its class.
Exactly. The new Sentra is Nissan's best looking vehicle. I also like the Maxima, but I didn't get it because I loath cvts.
I'll take the old 6 speed auto trans over the CVT anytime.
It's a beautiful and rugged SUV that will not last long.
CVT = dealbreaker
Shame to put so much effort into the redesign, and leave the powertrain so lackluster. Add in zero option for an optional upgrade, and has me skipping over this test drive when buying a new CUV. Not all of us just want a cheap lease that the Rogue offers.
@@chigasaki06
But Maxima with CVT is a driver"s car and drives 10 times better than Avalon.
@@troyx0 I think nissan cvt has broken your spirit man. Try honda or toyota when it comes to cvt. Most manufacturers now do turbo or non turbo. Personally I like non turbo for long term ownership but sadly you can't run away from cvt. Manuals are good but in american big cities on stop and go traffic for some people its a no no.
Wished they offered a hybrid option. Otherwise it looks good.
Forgot to mention, the acceleration is more than adequate…linear, smooth and good torque. With sport mode it is surprisingly quick and stiffens up the steering a bit more as well. I am used to Hemi V8’s and I still enjoy it’s performance.
I agree with you Alex. The new Rogue looks elegant and modern as well as more assertive.
Haven’t been a fan of Nissan the past few years, but I really love that interior design. No piano black anywhere!! That’s excellent. Great video as always.
Just around the infotainment screen bevels
I search Alex's green boxes when I'm not too interested in the car, but missed his comparo opinions at the end. Very impressive seats, ride, and handling! Those are the highest Alex scores ever for the segment.
Absolutely a fantastic buy for just under $40k…my Platinum has features on it that some $80k SUV’s don’t have! Comfortable, roomy and loaded with tech and safety plus does really good on gas. The Peanut butter color interior is stunning 😍. The transmission is silky smooth, steering is easy in close quarters and just firm enough at higher speeds and maneuvers. The engine is also super smooth sounding with no shudder or vibrations. Interior cabin is extremely quiet which allows you to enjoy the excellent stereo at any volume level or converse easily at highway speeds. Tremendous value overall!!
Alex does a good review without all the drama. It needs a bit more power is all, but this looks to be a lot better quality than the last one.
Alex your my favorite auto reviewer by far. Love your detailed reviews but if I can ask one thing is can you give us a wide angle shot of the interior that shows us all the dash in one shot so we can get a good feel of the interior? Thank you
Another excellent review Alex!! I love the exterior camera work while driving. I’d love to see how you do that!
finally something decent from Nissan.. new interior is what we were all waiting for
And the exterior😁 cause for years they have all looked the same
Thanks for all the details! Can't wait to test drive this. I am planning to downsize from my 13 year-old minivan. The surround view camera, all the storage options in the cabin and the configurable cargo space are all huge pluses in my book. I really want something that is fuel efficient so I am willing to forego some acceleration speed. The backseat looks spacious enough for my teenager as compared to the RAV4, which does not. I really love the storage space underneath the cup holders too.
Nissan amazingly elevated everything for the new Rogue. Now, it has even nicer looking interior and more advanced tech than some premium SUVs.
They forgot to elevate the CVT transmission and lacklustre engine. 2 pretty glaring ommisions.
@@James-il3tq Actually, Nissan is already on their 4th generation CVT. Transmission problems that Scotty Kilmer whines about, is old news. So stop living in the past.
Nissan CVT problems ended on the second generation. Now it's strong, powerful and more reliable
Alhassan Mashuud You're right. Haters need to update their knowledge.
I just can't understand why people hates Nissan/Infiniti
First time I've seen CarPlay integrated into instrument cluster. Also the RPM & Speed dials on their sides is wild lol.
J-P Fr Yeah I guess your right but I’ve never seen album art shown on cluster with CarPlay.
I’m so glad to see this positive review. It’s a looker! Nissan has a home run on its hands. It needs (and deserves) one
Alex, how many of your viewers watch without subscribing? You do outstanding work not reflected in your subs. I wonder if all the Subaru and Nissan people watching your mainstream reviews don’t sub.
18:05 doesnt seem to have fake exhausts, thats a win in my book
As always platinum version !! Please we need review on all other versions of this vehicle
Alex explains car stats thoroughly! I like his car comparison chart lets me know where the vehicle ranks with others.
Just saw your TFL version of this review, great stuff Alex. However, while you are showing us the current best-selling ICE car, Sofyan is buzzing around DC riding the wave of the future in VW’s new ID.4. I know Nissan is soon to launch their own next-gen electric vehicle, maybe you’ll get your hands on that before he does!
I am looking forward to your review when you get home. Thank you for the great reviews.
Hey ALEX please start adding headlight reviews on your car reviews! as well as night time reviews! and talking about the interior... how does it feel inside etc
There is no time for all of that

I have the second gen 2015 Rouge SL. Back then it offered the best value. Overall I'm happy with everything except the driving dynamics that 2021 improved and with nice interior, real AC climate control knobs (not like Subaru touch screen and others) will help the new Rouge to sell well. My Rouge is reliable so far, no issues except the battery has died after 2.5 years and has been replace under warranty.
I feel like this was enough to make it actually competitive with the CRV and RAV. Nissan did a great job refining the Rogue to fit it's strong suits: practicality, functionality and comfort. Unfortunately for Nissan, the RAV is probably going to get refreshed next year, the CRV is likely getting redesigned next year or the year after, and they don't go for competition, they go for class leading.
Even tho I have help 3 relatives purchase the current gen crv - I always liked the rogue for the larger 2nd row space. And it seems like Nissan added more safety features for the 2nd row, this would me my choice as a family vehicle. The new rav4 is so small in the 2nd row.
@@Wasabi9111 I feel like you can't go wrong with any of them, it's just up to preference. I personally lean more towards Honda if I had to pick between the three. I can't really get over the borderline bad CVTs and anemic performance in Nissan products. But I do like Nissan's seats and pro pilot assist better than the Honda line of products. Great choice either way!
Evan Condron I agreed. I convinced 3 relatives to get the 2017 crv ex. Back then it was hard to find a car for ~$26k with all the safety features and for the price, you cant beat it for the safety, practicality and reliability. I only wish this segment was more refined. Even $35k+ versions of this segment drive like an economy car.
I’d stay away from the crv. Oil dilution, transmission problems and ac compressor failures.
Q J fingers crossed! So far so good for all 3 of my relatives crv. I hope they’re reliable bc I had to convince my MIL to replace her ultra reliable 2004 rav4 for a safer 2017 crv. She didn’t want to get rid of her 2004 rav4, but it didn’t have any of the safety features that she needed.
This new Nissan Rouge SUV looks great. I don’t like the split headlight front, but it is not a dealbreaker as I would get used to it. The interior looks really nice and comfortable. Nissan has a winner on their hands with this Rouge.
Agree it looks very good, however split headlight a real breaker for me 🤮
James Yes. I could get used to it but it does ruin the look of the SUV with the split lights.
Does the sunroof open? Are they planning an AWD Hybrid? Another awesome review, thank you
Great review! Now I'm even more anxious to pick up our new blue SV when it arrives at the dealer this fall. Coming off three Altimas (93, 01 and 15) and one Sentra (10), the change should be interesting. FWIW, I'd rather have a car that I can drive comfortably all day than have a "quick" 0-60 time. Cheers!
Handsome inside and out, spacious, feature-laden, economical. A snooze to drive, yes, it could really use the 2.0 turbo, but then Nissan won't be able to point you towards the QX50. And since Rogues sell like hotcakes there's not much incentive to give it more power. If Nissan can do the same with the Pathfinder I think they'll be in decent shape to ride out this malaise they've found themselves in.
bren rob forget the turbos they need to put a na v6 in this
Naturally aspirated engines can last longer. It's more practical. Unless you're into racing.
@@allanbernabe38 True
@@brenrob7403 so r we all in agreement that they schould put a naturally aspirated v6 in dis thing
Andrew White That sure would be nice. But pigs will fly before that happens
This car literally screams more engine options.
Still better than what we have in Europe. The previous gen came with a 1.6l or, if you opted for all wheel drive, a 2.0l.
Silent Refusal imagine if they put a v6 in the top trim
The only thing it screams for is the car crusher. What an abomination.
Anyone who buys this needs a COVID swab due to extreme loss of taste. What an ugly monstrosity.
@@Ficon Well, that's your opinion and fortunately we can all have our own. Imagine how boring the world would be if we all had the same taste.
Thank you Alex for another extensive and thoughtful review!!
i like this better than the previous models. very good review .
I own the 2017 rogue SV and the main reasons I picked it was it’s extra interior room, the wide 90 degree rear door openings, the extra features at the mid level trim like gps , premium audio, pano roof, and tri-zone climate. Glad to see Nissan keeping the SV trim packed with higher end goodies. Gripes I’ve had with mine is it’s pickup speed, droney cvt, dated infotainment, and small item storage isn’t great. Looks like they tried to fix those things.
Great review! I cannot wait for the 2.0T engine for the Rouge
Great review as usual. The big question for anyone even considering a Rogue is have they addressed the CVT issues? We know 2 owners that had catastrophic transmission failures - one at 60k and the other at 90k. Having to spend $4k-$5k to replace a transmission at that mileage is insane. So, is the CVT also 'all new' and of a more robust design? The other issue is the 9.2 sec. 0-60. Add the weight of passengers, luggage, a full tank of gas and AWD and I wouldn't be surprised is we are knocking on the door of 11 sec. If you are trying to merge onto a highway with people doing 70+ and you are starting from a standstill....well, you get the point. Those are 2 glaring deficiencies that would keep me from putting this on my shopping list. Too bad, it seems like a pretty good choice otherwise.
Just what I needed to know. Thanks, Alex
I have a 2012 Nissan Sentra S with over 206,000 miles on it. Never had an issue with the original CVT. I changed the fluid every 60,000 miles as required in the owner’s manual. Nissan is capable to be reliable as Toyota and Honda. You haters should learn how to read a manual and drive a car properly and you won’t have any problems long term.
My last 3 Nissan are all CVTs. Never have any issue with them
Ok with the speed Alex speaks, there are bound to be bloopers. Blooper vids please.
Disappointed that Nissan didn’t add ventilated seats in the top trim 😑
Me toooo
It's not a luxury vehicle at the end of the day.
@@CommandoMaster cheaper cars offer ventilated seats, so it’s not really a luxury nowadays, just as heated seats being so common
As far as the CVT goes, that’s what warranties and extended warranties are for.
Any smart soul wouldn't even think of a Nissan.
Alex can make a video shot of the interior from between the two front seats so that we could see the OVERALL IMAGE of the DASHBOARD.
14:26 it is
@@shuyu9015 Yes, but the dashboard shot while driving would include the road view, the frontal interior shot that we look for should be a little bit downward where it shows the car center console instead of the road view from the windscreen.
Just got the SV.....Ilove it styling is amazing I looked at the Toyota.....no comparison. Rouge blows it away.Get one !
I like it's looks. 100x nicer than the last one. With the other credential, Looks like a very sensible car to buy.
I know Nissan may never want to ditch CVTs until their EVs hit the market, but I feel a chain-driven CVT would last longer than their belt-driven one. Also, the fake vents in front encroach on the headlights space, and it spoils the look there. They also need at least one more engine as an option, probably the 2.0 from the Sentra or the Altima for those who want more power. Other than those complaints, it is a good car.
I'm very glad they went for better driving dynamics over the 2nd generation. I'm driving a 1st generation Rogue and the drop in overall dynamics with the shift towards comfort on the 2nd gen was annoying to me. I am curious to hear your thoughts on why C&D is publishing a 0-60 time of 8.2. As much as I'd love to believe the 8.2 I'm far more inclined to trust your numbers.
No complaints about the looks but really wish they added an alternative power train, especially when it’s competition all offer more speed and hybrid options. The previous gen rogue was also very buzzy under acceleration and based on the video it seems that might be better now? That would be a nice change at least.
Needs more engine options, needs that 2.0 vc turbo or a strong hybrid.
I like this one Alex. You do a great review...
I wish they'll make a hybrid version of the Rogue again.
Nissan continues to dominate in the segment with the longest running key fob.
Man no joke you saw that in the console too! I have a 2016 Infiniti QX50 and it also uses the same Fob. It does work well but damn
I read that they will be introducing a Rogue PHEV in a year or two - the same powertrain as the next gen Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.
Awesome presentation!! It makes me happy to own a great vehicle. 💗
Are you sure this rogue no problem about the cvt?Rogue problem is losing power when reach the 100,000 miles.
Great attention to detail in this review.
The old divide-and-hide cargo organizer was one of the best things the old Rogue had going for it; so why would Nissan reduce the number of configurations in the new one?
The divide and hide was literally the selling point for me getting my 2018 Rogue. The sales guy tried to get me to buy the sport and I said nope. I love the cargo space and different space options. Why in the world would they take that away? I was in an accident in June and my Rogue was totaled. I wanted the 2021 but now I'm not so sure...
Can't wait til you get your hands on the Ariya.
Cvts are for small cars around 3000 pounds with less then 150hp period.
Excellent scores Nissan! Really liking it
This is a professional presentation 👍 like this
Starting from "TODAY..." - sounds like a brand name of this canal! Like it
I love this car. I think I will buy one when it is available in Europe. Is it possible to change the colors and style of the Digital LCD Tachometer?
Hopefully. I want purple & white like infinitis .
Some nice improvements and the addition of the Platinum trim level! I just wish it had a higher tow rating to at least match the RAV4 or CX-5.
Hope the transmissions are stronger than the old ones
I'm very curious as to how the platinum trim compares to the 2.4L version of the 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe Limited.
i hope the new Rogue do not have a transmission problems because i love the rogue i have but i just has to put a new transmission in and it was not cheap
@Jonathan A yeah mine was the transmission on false of our own but our rogue dont have a transmission dip stick we bought it in June and the transmission want out in nov
@Jonathan A our is an 2015 and we just didn't know that in a Nissan first time own one and that we know we are on the right path I just wish it had a dipstick thor
@Jonathan A yes we bought is from a used car dealership and the car had 54000 on it so my guess they didn't change the transmission fluid but the rogue is an good SUV:)
I really (actually) like the looks of this thing. I just wish it had more power.
With hybrid technology as good as it is now, all of the cars in this segment should just be hybrid standard-for a grocery getter/commuter there’s just nothing better all around. 40mpg is really nice to have. Maybe have a 2.0turbo option for people who want to tow more.
Nice looking interior in this car anyway.
Excellent review.
My favorite channel. Alex can you do a review on a 2020 Dodge Journey? Crossroad or GT.
0-60 can not be an issue in this segment few secs more or less can not be the criteria in this class, here what counts more is reliability and durability and the Rav4 with the CRV can not be beaten and besides these 2 are looking in their current versions exactly so appealing as this Rogue.
Finally a decent Rouge. Sure glad I didn’t buy the old one. Hope we aren’t forced to get the two toned interior
This is the best looking suv in the segment imo.
I am renting a 2020 Nissan Rogue and it drives nice and smooth and is not a bumpy ride like the Mazda cx5 my relative drives, even though the Mazda is a more luxury looking and more fun car to drive. The Nissan seats are very comfortable though. The 2021 is better looking than the Nissan 2020 - however, some functions in the 2020 I like better than in the 2021. Also I like CD players (yes I still listen to my CDS) and my Nissan rental has a CD player but I see the 2021 does not.
Totaly true, nissan has amazing chassis , I test drove murano recently and it is just a cadilac comparing to my kia sportage. I just hope they didnt spoil it with new suspension enhacemnts. And if they improved cabin noise like it is mentioned here , it should be a hit. Though seems like a tin can feeling is still there , based on other review's sound of closing back door , plus it has gdi engine.
Great looking CUV! Shame they didn’t significantly improve the powertrain. If it was in the 7.5-8 sec range, I’d definitely consider it over a CRV. I like the power of the CRV, but I’m not a fan of the minivan looks of it.
This rogue looks like a cross breed with renault and mitshubishi. Hope it rides better than previous ones. My daughter has a 2017 rogue and it rides rough, noisy and handles less than good.
Very well equipped! However new front end looks like a Hyundai. Very good review!
The selling points of previous nissan were amazing chassis , roomy cabin and price. The negatives were underpowered power train , cabin noise and tin can feeling. I test drove murano recently and it is just a cadilac comfort comparing to my kia sportage, and pretty sure it beats new sorento and santa in this category. Not sure if Rav4 or crv has acoustic glass, but rav must be less roomy. Crv has a lot of cabin noise. I just hope new rouge didnt spoil it with new suspension enhacemnts. And if they improved cabin noise like it is mentioned here , it should be a hit. Though seems like a tin can feeling is still there .
I don't like the camera being on the corner of the rear bumper; that's is where you usually get the first dent. Expensive to fix with the camera there.
While I agree that 0-60 times are not that important to most people in this segment, I don't know how you can deal with 0-60 times of 9 to 10 seconds. When pulling on to the highway, especially where I'm from, you just don't have a lot of space to accelerate and need to get to speed quickly at a lot of highway changeovers. So if you're going 30 around the on-ramp, and need to accelerate to 65+, the acceleration of this car would scare me.
It looks good but Jeep tried that headlight design on the Cherokee and it did not work out for them I don't think it will be like that very long
This gives me some hope for the upcoming pathfinder. There just isn't a competitor to hyundai/kia for value in the larger SUV's.
@alexonautos like to see reviews on the headlights at night
Nice looking Rogue (inside & out). A pity about the CVT. I loved my Outback but the feeling of operating a blender is very disappointing.
Alex, you have always praise the Rogue for great fuel economy with this generation and the previous Rogue but I own one and didn't get the MPG estimate at all. In winter, I got 22-23MPG and other season just around 26-27 MPG mixed at best.
Thought it was a pathfinder for a second in the front lol
It would be cool to see this front end on the pathfinder. Plus, I'm sure it won't hurt to put a six speed automatic transmission in this, at least. Nissan's CVTs are one of the worst (if not the worst) in the industry when it comes to reliability.
Awesome and thorough review. I'm just not feeling the Nissan. In fact I feel Nissan has lost any type of styling edge since maybe the GTR or the 300Z back in it's day. The trucks are uninspired and the sedans now all look the same. That's too bad IMHO. Thanks again Alex. Can you review the 2021 Defender please?
