P. S. If you like Sonic Chronicles, that’s all fine. But there’s more than just the ending that made Sonic Chronicles one of the most disappointing Sonic games, if not one of the most of all time.

I feel like it's also important to note: you can get stuck halfway through the game if you don't have Cream the Rabbit on your team. She's an optional recruitable character but the only other character with a level 3 fly ability. This means at the point where Tails isn't on your team, if you don't have Cream, you can't advance any further and you'll have to start the entire game all over again . That's a pretty big oversight

I've heard of this problem. Luckily, later copies of the game fixed this issue, where you HAVE to obtain Cream to advance the story, and it happens before tails is lost. I was unfortunate enough to have an earlier game copy, but I had Cream so luckily I avoided the glitch

Sega should really take another shot at making a Sonic RPG. One of the most popular aspects of the series (and the main reason I like it so much) is the numerous and diverse characters. If they were to do a by-the-numbers RPG that doesn't experiment with anything radically different, has a good battle system and story, puts the focus on its characters and their development, and doesn't have any glaring problems that cripple the experience, I'd jump right on board.
Hell, get Atlus on it. They’re on a roll with RPGs if Persona is anything to go by and they could definitely do the Sonic style in a JRPG
Unleashed…kind of has some RPG elements in it. It has the leveling system, it has side quests, it has a world you can explore a bit. It is the most linear RPG I’ve ever played but it’s still kind of an RPG.

I was already an adult at the time this game came out. 20 years old to be exact, but even then, I actually enjoyed the game quite a lot. I played it for hours on end. Didn't want to stop playing, but of course life gets in the way and I was in junior college at the time much like Johnny was in college back then.
However, after beating the game, I had a hard time getting back into it. I did start playing it again sometime many years ago, like around 2010 or 2011 or something, but didn't finish my second playthrough for some reason. I still don't know what reason I stopped playing. I might have just been really busy at the time. I did go to junior college and I worked a full time job back then so that might have had something to do with it.
I remember seeing the ending as a kid. I felt betrayed. I desperately told myself a sequel would happen. Fuck this game. I was able to tolerate the shitty music and wonky controls, but that ending makes this game not worth my time anymore.
I bought this the day it came out as a kid and had a blast playing it; I beat it multiple times. Obviously it's not something I'd revisit, but I have a soft spot for it. And hey, did you know Shade the Echidna won a Nintendo Power Award for best new character back in '08?
Also, the reason the sound design and music is so awful is because Bioware stopped developing the game at a late beta stage; they were bought out by EA at the time and had *technically* fulfilled their contract to Sega, leaving huge chunks of the game unfinished, including, well, literally all the music and sound effects. Sega literally used fan made midis to fill out the soundtrack.
B P I checked the Nintendo Power Awards 2008 to make sure you weren't pulling my leg...holy shit, my girl Shade getting some recognition.

2008 was a pretty good year for games.
Saints Row 2, Burnout Paradise, Mirrors Edge, Dead Space, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Grand Theft Auto IV, Far Cry 2, Fallout 3, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Rainbow Six: Vegas 2, Ninja Gaiden II, Little Big Planet, etc.
All of which being my personal favorites.

There were a lot of heavy hitters. Assassin's Creed was the new kid on the block as well. E3 2007 had a ton of promise and they arguably all delivered...and then the whole crash happened and we're still feeling the effects.

@@moonraven6145 Yeah, the ones where they had to fight off a demon or extraterrestrial was always very interesting because it was something we're not normally used to. But Nintendo always love using Bowser as the antagonist for their entire franchise, since he was there from the beginning.

Ah Sonic Chronicles, it's a guilty pleasure of mine. I know the story is super basic and the POW moves aren't great, but I still play it every year or two. I do like a lot of the ideas though, interactive moves could, and have, worked, and the combo moves are interesting, and I do like the characters and an RPG Sonic game. Although now that you mentioned it I want a Sonic Battle review, I always loved that game, I'm not even sure if the game is great or sucks, I love it.

You know what's funny? I don't remember what the first video of yours I saw, but I remember that seeing that FLCL wall scroll is what made me want to stay. And here we are now; I am a major fan, praise your fairness in reviews to the highest regard, I tormented the Four Swords Adventures playthrough comments section (even being mentioned on one of the videos), and still re-watches reviews every now and then. Keep on keeping on, Johnny!

I completly agree and honestly other then the music exept for the intro being bad is the rest just preference and it SO much fun to play it is my final fantasy. I can understand why people would not like it if they just cant get warmed up to the things he said up there but goddamn i love this game from the chao garden to the cliffhanger that should really be picked up on. I just hope that sonic forces delivers on that.
it's what you call a guilty pleasure. you know that it's objectively shit, but you still like it despite its flaws, like the sonic story book games(although i fucking hate those games, i know some people will have shit taste, and no amount of time can fix that)

Johnny, I was unemployed around the same time as you, and started watching your videos, then, as well. Gaming, including FF and Sonic games amd your videos were my escape too, snd helped keep me going. Now, I work an excessive number of hours, but still take time to play FF, Sonic, and watch your videos. You are right - just keep going, and find your place in the world. Also, I love the idea of a Sonic RPG. It looks cool and an RPG based on a platforming franchise doesn't have to be deep.
Johnny is probably the only reviewer/creators ive watched who has evolved in a good way. Others, be they TV, Anime, Videogames, Etc, have either stayed the same, or, being blunt, gotten worse. They pad out their videos with jokes, skits, or expounding on the meaning of whatever it is. Nostalgia Critic and Anime Abandon come to mind....
But Johnny has kept it classic from the start. Its a bit more structured, yes. But that isnt a bad thing. I'm happy to have been subscribed to Johnny since his 06 review. And i can only hope for many more years of Johnny doing his thing.

I couldn't help but laugh every single time I heard omega shoot somebody as a kid I hear *BLULELELELELELERGH* . Oh just typing out now makes me laugh now also enemies could would have their own special attacks that make your characters go *BLULELELELELELERGH* like their throwing up everywhere it was hilarious.
Yup! The sounds are pretty hilarious. The one that bothered me the most is that ALL robots have the exact same sound effect when they appear on screen. Other than that, they were funny.

When this game came out, I was in fifth grade (in fact, I specifically remember playing it in the car ride to Michael's to get supplies for making a model of the cell for a project). I remember liking the Rusty Ruin remix (not that I knew where it came from at the time) and the battle themes, but I also didn't use headphones at the time. Now, almost ten years later, one of my degrees in college is music and it literally hurts my ears to listen to this game's sounds. I don't think majority of the compositions are bad, either; it's the awful soundfont mixed with the terrible sound quality. I know the DS isn't known for crisp-sounding music, but even Sonic Rush sounds better because the music was professionally produced and compressed in a way that made it sound somewhat decent. They clearly rushed this out to get it done in time, and it really sucks that Sonic games are always (ironically...?) being held down by time constraints.
I have a soft spot for this game - I remember when I beat Shadow and he joined my party and even playing as Robotnic at some points. And at the end when I defeated that alien robot thing as Super Sonic and I felt so good about myself. All the new characters were so cool, and those jellyfish guys were so difficult to kill. And Shade! Omgggg soz just getting flashbacks.

i played this game so many god damn times over, i remember my level for sonic freaking maxing out lmfao, so many hours of fun. It became so stupidly easy near the end due to the insane stats I had for characters 😂

I went to one in Jacksonville, they make you pay an arm and leg for material you can learn elsewhere at half the price. Plus my gf graduated a year ago and still has not found work related to graphic design cause employers don't feel an uncredited school is worth anything.

I needed to here this today this year has been rough especially yesterday.
Your message at the beginning helped me a lot. I made a horrible decision of dropping out of college last year without any plan to help me both mentally and financially. From when I dropped out of college, I was motivated to try my best to create a comic (which I did 6 months *after* I dropped out) until I became unmotivated with little to no personal growth for at least 5 months. I'm always the person who likes to think about doing something, but always never actually did something to make it happen right away. Right now, I have a job to help me financially, still working on my comic, but most important to me, kept on moving with my life and artworks. I'm still somewhat aimless, but I am working on my "goal" better than what I did last year.
Also, your review videos are the best for entertainment and constructive criticism.
It would be really awesome if Sonic Chronicles The Dark Brotherhood had a remake or a sequel that would fix many problems the game had. I thought the story is decent, but it could be better. It would be cool if they expand on Shade's character and learn more about her. Music, even though it's lackluster, could be really awesome if it had a different sound chip. I mean, search up Sonic Chronicles The Dark Brotherhood Music Remaster, it's sounds SO much better than the Original. Gameplay could be improved. So much potential with Sonic Chronicles, but it's probably not gonna happen because of a certain individual...

Master Vidxad 58 They can't because Shade along with a few other charicters made for Sonic' s comic series are in copyright limbo because the man who made them didn't want to respect his contract with Sega as while he owns the rights to them as charicters Sega is allowed to use them for whatever they want along with some more complicated contract stuff, guy didn't like that even though they didn't have to Sega just took one of his stories and made a game out of it without his permission even though Sega had full rights to do so basically a drawn out lawsuit that ended in a statement that combined with Sonic 06 is why Sega has distanced them selves from more serous stories I the game and basically only allowing the comic writers that remained to only write stories based on existing Sonic media and nothing they come up with themselves to the point they used a crossover with the mega man comic to recon out of existence all charicters made by that asshole

if so dang that sucks, I'm sure its a very unpopular opinion but I actually really enjoyed Sonic '06, I didn't have many problems when i played it and I found the story enjoyable, granted the kiss was a little weird but hey Sonic is full of weird things. for example a giant space turtle with a robotic shell flys toward Earth with a space station stuck up its butt, little animals pilot robotic suits, hyper sonic aka seizure sonic. Don't get me wrong I love sonic, I have loved every game I played and I have pretty much every one.

Jo-Kai Gon-Zo Are you high? Ken Penders is the most hated person ever. The Sonic Fandom hates him greatly. Because of Ken Penders, there isn't going to be any back story for Knuckles ever. And because of him, there isn't going to be any deep Sonic stories in games.
As for the whole brouhaha over Penders thinking that the Dark Brotherhood looks similar to the Dark Legion, all I have to say is... I don't see the resemblance.
Omg, I loved this game so much as a child. Honestly the only part I remember being infuriating were these overworld puzzles they did from time to time that just took forever and were frustrating as heck when you were like 10 years old

Day 7 of corona virus quarantine bs: revisited one of my childhood favorites (against all odds) and “speedran” it in like 4 hours.. I must say I still really enjoy the storyline, maybe I enjoyed it a lot more in 2008 but it’s a classic in my opinion. It’s safe to say we’ll likely never see a sequel, but a remastered is a possibility!
Uhhhh. Am I the only one here that actually thought the game was fun? Don't get me wrong the visuals and sound design were shit but did anyone else at least have a good time with this game??

This game was brilliant! I don't see why so many people hate it. Yeah, the music isn't amazing, it is controlled via touch screen, the combat system isn't great, and the plot has its flaws. But does that really make it a bad game? I mean.. it's the only offical Sonic RPG as of today, which is honestly pretty sad; it also has a very unique style of combat which involves clicking and dragging circles (I found that to be quite fun), which people don't really seem to think about much. In most RPGs, you choose your move and which enemy you wish to attack, then you wait for your next turn. A lot of the Mario RPGs have action commands (button pressed during moves that, if pulled off, will deal extra damage), which gives you something to do whilst waiting for the next turn; whereas SCTDB has the circle-clicking combat that gets more and more difficult towards the end of the game instead. The last 3-4 chapters of the game aren't so good, and I feel that the dialogue also starts to bore, but the final fight of the game was extremely fun and unexpected; and something I wish more developers did.
I've played a lot of the "normal" Sonic platformers and can honestly say that I enjoyed this far more than any of them. Perhaps it was because I grew up playing RPGs, or simply just the fact that I'm not keen on the repetition of the platformers. I was also quite disappointed by Sonic Lost World, too, which I bought because of its similarities to Super Mario Galaxy; but it turned out nothing alike and with some pretty difficult controls that have put me off from finishing it.

12:07 um I'm sorry Ken Panders, but how big of a fucking ego do you have to have to sue a company that owns and makes games of the same exact charcters you were just writing comic books for just over a similar story!? I know copyright infringement is a big deal and even I wouldn't like it if someone stole all of my ideas for stories and characters. But it just feels like Ken was stretching way too far for a lawsuit just because the game had a similar story to his. Last time I checked, it's ok to take an existing type of story or borrow elements of a story and changing it up so it can be something completely different and I think Ken failed to understand that.
I'm sorry, but Ken was just a writer for the Sonic comic books and I just think it's really stupid to sue the company that owns the rights of those characters over a story he thought was stolen. Even tho he's techinally someone who had to make an agreement with SEGA, who owns Sonic, just so he can have permission to use the Sonic characters in the comic books he wrote for it. He's not even the creator of any of the characters in the games or in this game for that matter.
He simiply could've just taken a few minutes to think about it and just say, "you know what, it's not that big of a deal. It's just a minor story for a spin off game that's barely canon to the Sonic lore to begin with. So why should I waste time trying to sue Sega for it?" It could've been over like that before it began if you actually thought about it Ken. I'm sorry dude, but come on, did you really had to sue Sega just for one game that's considered mediocre and non-canon to the Sonic lore just because it happens to have a similar story to yours?

I'm a recent subscriber but this video is the reason I watch this channel; Johnny seems like such a genuine and down-to-earth guy. Huge props to him for sharing his experiences in the early days when he was feeling less positive and unsure of himself, it takes a lot to share that with the world and is a positive point for those who may be feeling that way now.
