      In a perfect world, it would have been kept original and turned into a Lucy museum.
      But we don’t live in a perfect world. What has been done can be reversed, and we should be thankful the owner did what they did in order to enjoy it, because in these modern times, what would have happened is someone would buy the $14mil property, completely level it, and build a multi BILLION dollar home to someone who probably wouldn’t even live there the majority of the time. Of course, the alternative would be to completely level it and build “affordable housing.” In other words, a massive apartment complex, where tenants would have to pay $3,000 a month for a dinky little studio apartment. They serious need to fix their housing situation.

    The Roxbury home was in a popular neighborhood for other celebrities, also. To the rear was where Jack Benny lived (he frequented her house quite often) and directly across the street was the home of Jimmy Stewart. I think George or Ira Gershwin occupied the house diagonally across from Lucy, and a few doors down was owned by Rosemary Clooney (George Clooney's aunt).

    • @DrGariS
      @DrGariS  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Benny lived immediately next door. Stewart lived across the street on the south side of the home (side not front part). Peter Falk next to Benny. Across the street and a few homes down were the ones you mentioned and also Agnes Moorehead. Since then Dianne Keaton, Madonna and Clooney lived there as well. I’ve been to Lucy’s house in Palm Springs a few times. They also started a hotel out there. It’s very cute (it’s been renovated, we’ve stayed there). There are countless celebrity homes in Palm Springs. I think Elvis had 2 homes there, but only one of them is really worth seeing (and crazy enough, both homes are within a few miles of each other…why???). Even though regular people live in those homes now, the city has some crazy strict ordinances which prevent people from doing much renovating. Many of those old homes still look pretty much the same on the outside. Unfortunately though, most people put large gates up in order to keep the lookey-loos away, but there are guide books of that entire valley of just celebrity homes that goes back a hundred years. It’s amazing just how many different celebs used (and still use) that place as their “playground”.

    On March 3, 1966 Frawley collapsed right by the giant clock at 6439 Hollywood Blvd. which still stands. The nearest cross street is Wilcox. He was helped (carried) to the lobby of the Knickerbocker on Ivar Ave. about 100 feet from Hollywood Blvd. and some say there is where he died before being taken to the Hollywood Receiving Hospital (now the Hollywood LAPD Precinct). Others say he died at the hospital. This was told to me by one of the writers of the "I Love Lucy" show, Bob Carroll, Jr in 1974.

      @@DrGariS I lived in Hollywood when I moved to LA in 1972. In those days you would see celebrities everywhere. Then I bought a house in Toluca Lake (next to North Hollywood) and I knew where all the stars lived in my neighborhood, including Bob Hope, but I never say him - just his car. My Mom would visit every year and sit on my lawn waiting for stars to walk by (but they never did.) However, one day, Barbara Streisand's trailer was parked in front of my house on Hortense St while they made "A Star is Born." I tried to get her autograph, but security was tight, even though they were right in front of my house and walked all over my lawn. I ended up giving one of the guys protecting her a note for her. I wrote something like, "I wanted to get your autograph, but was stopped, so here is mine." Pretty stupid, I know, but I was a lot younger then. I moved several times, West Hills, Thousand Oaks, Burbank, San Fernando Valley, and Castaic. I'm retired now and I still live LA. Sorry, TMI.

    Vance's house in Frontera is worth 7M? Who in their right mind would spend that kind of bread on such a big house stuck on a postage stamp sized property? Lol, I have 56 ac. and I feel cramped sometimes, I couldn't imagine living like that with neighbors surrounding my house. Frawley was a huge drunk, my granddad was best friends with Max Rosenbloom who got him a job driving for Lucy when she first became famous, she had a vacation home in CO. too which she let her staff use when she wasn't there. My granddad became a personal guard for quite a few actors of that era because of Max and he'd always hear all the dirt which he told me about when he was older and we'd watch the tube together.

      It’s in Brentwood. Supply and demand makes it more expensive here. Having 56 acres in that area would be billions because you would need to buy all the homes out and tear them down.
      That’s so awesome about your granddad. Sounds like he had a wonderful and fun life!!

      Fun fact about Lucy's house: it wasn't for sale when she bought it, she was looking for a new house in town cause her and Desi's ranch was too far away, and she saw this house while out with a realtor, and liked the look of it. She knocked on the door, met the owner Mrs Bang, whose son had recently died, offered the $85,000 dollars which her and her husband agreed to and bought the house. Only Lucille Ball would have the courage to do that. I love Lucy, and love her house, and hate what the new owners did to it.

    I went to look at the Hollywood Knickerbocker to possibly rent there and was rightfully disgusted by what I found. While waiting in the Manager's office talking chit-chat with the Assistant Manager, because the Senior Manager was late for work An Exterminator walked into the office right after the Senior Manager finally showed up to listen to her ask him if he found any roaches, ROACHES!. He said no (but he was sent to spray and treat a couple of units not the entire building as what normally is done because the Hollywood Knickerbocker staff and owner(s) are so cheap, but he found Bed Bugs AND ants!!! The Senior Manager looked at me nervously and stammered "We have a resident who has been in the hospital for awhile who spilled sugar on the floor and that's why there are ants in the unit". She avoided answering about the Bed Bug infestation. Besides that, the only way you can be approved to move there it seems is if your Russian and no way else period as EVERY single resident there I saw during my several visits were only Russian. I was even made intentionally very uncomfortable there just for being born an American. Needless to say, I left there and never went back. No doubt the property is owned by the infamous Russian Mafia I bet and if your a day late paying your rent your probably will be found on the sidewalk after being thrown from the roof. The rent is subsidized by the government as it's for senior citizens only and looks lime a nursing home with walkers and wheelchairs everywhere.
