Bose L1 Review for Classical Guitar

- Is the Bose L1 the best portable amp for classical guitar? Take a listen to decide for yourself. I find that it preserves the rich, vibrant and warm tone of a classical guitar. Today’s modern classical guitarist frequently finds themselves in an environment that requires amplification. The purist Segovia days of performing on a stage in a quiet auditorium have gone by the board. Now, classical guitarists must compete with natural noise from weddings and other special events, or even to hold their own as part of a band. The Bose L1 system is easy to carry and even compact enough for taking on public transportation. If you don’t want to put a pickup system in your classical guitar, or are unsatisfied with the tin like sound from inherent acoustic electric pickups, then the Bose L1 may be a good option for you.

That is a cool system, it looks versatile. Something like that would be great even for busking. I wonder if it could do other instruments like a bass perhaps
Thanks, Conrad! Sure, you can definitely use a bass on this system too because it uses the same quarter inch cable. Given the fact that this has a fairly impressive lower end, I'd bet a bass would sound great on this system. You'll have t come over and try it out, ha ha! As for busking, you'd need a power source, but if you were able to plug in somewhere or use portable power, it would work well.
Very useful review of Bose L1 Sound system!
Thanks, Dad! I appreciate it! Thanks for buying the system.
Thank you Josh!
Anytime! Glad you enjoyed!
Very informative video about the Bose amp! Seemed easy to set up and portable 👍🏻
Thanks, Mette! Yes, that's exactly right! I'm hoping to use this again in a future video too.
Great review Josh!
Thanks, Juan! I appreciate it!

So wonderful performance!👍👍👍
Thanks, Pacsun! I appreciate your kind words!
This was really interesting. Thank you for sharing this. 👏👏👏
Thanks for checking it out, Wolfgang! You could also use this the same way to amplify your guitalele.
Great review, Josh! There are so many options to choose from so it's good to have heard a couple of them beforehand. Makes it easier to select. 👍
Thanks, Tomas! I agree completely. It can be tough to discern the difference when listening on a computer, and also to capture the true sound of an amp; but in this instance I could hear a noticeable difference between using the amp and not.
That’s a cool setup! Looks really user friendly for toting around and setting up.
Thanks, guys! Yes, indeed it is!
Nice review Joshua, as you know I am SUPER opinionated about the issues of amplifying classical guitars!
This is why I use my godin so much! So this is a good option! Chao!
Thanks, Justin! Yes, you inspired this video, in fact. Our conversation about the portable amp made me realize that even classical guitarists frequently have a need to amplify their playing, so maybe people would be interested in hearing this as an option.
Sounding so good 🎼
Thanks, Greeshma! I appreciate it!
Very nice review Josh! This does look like one of the best systems out there. It would be nice fo try out 😊🎧
Thanks, Gary! This would work well for you since you play both classical and acoustic, as well as singing (because there are 2 inputs).
It's a touchy subject for sure! Segovia playing unamplified in 2000 seat halls was a bit ridiculous. And modern amplification can be remarkably faithful to the original sound. One day I'll try it. I was struck by how easily your seemed to carry it all, Josh -- I would have thought it would be very heavy?
Thanks, Steven! The base to the unit is probably between 10 - 15 pounds (4 - 6 Kilos), so around the weight of carrying a duffel bag or suitcase. Travelling with gear can be difficult, but not impossible. I recently went to North Carolina with my guitar hard shell case and propped it up vertically against my suitcase handle when I was on the subway (Underground, as it's known in the UK). I utilized the elevators where possible and took breaks as needed. Sometime I'll take this Bose system out on public transport as a test too, but this is how I carried it in from the car to the library, when I played there in October.
@@Josh.Vanjani yes I'm often carrying the hard case on the underground, so I sympathise! If only guitar cases had little wheels like suitcases... Carrying an amplifier as well would seem a challenge, but as you show, not impossible
@@StevenWatsonMusic That's a great idea. I should write to TKL and tell them to design something, ha ha.
Great information and review it made me wonder what is more important the amp or the microphone you use.
Thanks, Todd! Good question. The microphone I used is fairly lower end, so I'd imagine it could only sound better with a high fidelity mic.
@@Josh.Vanjani which would sound better a $100 mic with $1,000 amp or a $1,000 mic with a $100 amp?
@@Toddlane43 That's essentially the same question as when people ask me if a $6000 guitar with cheap strings or a cheap guitar with $60 strings will sound better. While expensive strings will most certainly make even a Yamaha C-40 sound better, you'll consistently get better performance out of a luthier made instrument strung up with D'Addario EJ27 student nylon. I'd venture the same is true for amps, that a better quality amp will produce better sound with a cheaper mic.
Josh this is a great review but I am a bit confused as the system you are using seems to have two inputs, one is XLR and the other is Line, but the system in the link has three inputs (2x combo and 1x line) and a very different interface. Is there a reason for the difference? Thanks again for the helpful review.
Good observation, Philip; it seems that the link is the current iteration/model ("Pro8"), whereas I have the original L1 system from a couple years ago. I looked it over and the interface is definitely different, but it seems the functionality and portability is essentially the same. Looks a bit better than my model, in fact. I'd be interested in trying out the new model to see if there have been any improvements in their tone, etc. In any case, thanks for watching!
I'd take a Fishman "Loudbox" over that contraption.
Whatever works for you. That's exactly the purpose of this review, so folks can figure out if it works for them or not.
