I do pretty well at locals without either although Little Knight absolutely steals games off me regularly.
It’s not necessary. The thing that makes me the most mad is Konami shows their clear favoritism of the OCG and shows they could easily make the cards cheaper. Even with the rarity collection they’ll probably not change how things go
To play devil's advocate it's also a lot easier to print cards for the ocg and retailers have more product
I think the biggest hurdle for me trying to get into yugioh at this point in time isn't just the price tag on a single deck, but how effective down the line that one deck is going to be. With the sporadic changes from new sets, to the meta, to how out of nowhere the banlist seems to drop, you're going to be sinking money into multiple of these decks over a short period. It's a significant investment to keep into this hobby, and other games have a much more manageable fee for entry and following the meta.

There’s probably a lot of players who are stuck at local levels because they can’t afford the expensive cards.
They probably go on Master Duel instead if they are priced out. Locals suffers more with that in mind.

Can you play without thrust and Little night? ABSOLUTELY YES, can you win even if your opponent are playing those cards? ABSOLUTELY YES, staples are just cards that everybody plays, that doesn't mean that they will resolve everytime they're played, and even if everybody plays them, that does not mean it will give you an advantage if they manage to resolve, does that mean you should be afraid of those cards everytime you go against somebody? ABSOLUTELY NOT, but if you're afraid of those cards then don't play all your resources and play around those cards, that might sound difficult at first, but just as everybody was playing around arise-heart when it was available on the TCG, I don't know why or how everybody are complaining to S:P little night, it appeared everybody just completely forgot how to play yugioh when that card arrived, completely bonkers.

I skipped OTS weekend because there's too many turbo bullshit decks (d barrier, droll, shifter, eev, king calamity) running around and there's too many pay to win cards as well. I actually just wanna sell everything at this point and never play competitive again. Sucks because casual yugioh is boring but competitive yugioh is unreasonably expensive.
Since Master Duel came out, it alleviated this problem for me. I really don't care if the card pool is behind if it means cheaper access to stuff. Casual stuff in paper, competitive stuff online. Great if you see otherwise, but this is how I can get the most out of the game.
Last month I’ve beaten rescue ace with nemleria (2-1)😭😭 funniest games I’ve ever had :)

You can def win without staples but I think thrusting into a evenly against lab is really funny
Yeah, I always say to myself, that I don't want to invest in expensive staples, if my skill level isn't good enough to make use of them in order to get more wins. (I just play on locals anyway. Also I play Branded, where I lock myself into fusions anyway and the extra deck is tight. So I probalby would either have won or lost before being able to summon S:P Little Knight.)

I play infernoble and theres obvious synergy. Maugis equip too good.
But ive been winning my locals like almost every weekend since nexus dropped that ive become the local villain.
Like you said, expensive staples are great but theres nothing better than good cards that work for your deck. And let me tell you, theres a certain type of dread on the opps face when i slap down connector
As a casual player im annoyed thrust is expensive because its an interesting card and i would like to play it in my branded deck because it creates more interesting results. Same for SP the cards really strong but also has cool interactions like resetting a baronne effect.
Its not simply a matter of wanting these cards to be "competetive" people also want these cards because they have found some use within the decks they like playing.
dont forget that unless if the tourney is around your area, going to the event is probably more expensive than whatever meta deck your bringing. and if you go to these multiple times a year i'm pretty sure the cost of travel will practically dwarf the cost of your deck x_x

I stopped watching at around the 2:00 mark because it was obvious enough what the point of the video was going to be.
What you were demonstrating is called a handicap. A similar concept is used in chess where a player of higher elo may play with fewer starting pawns and can still win if there is a large skill difference.
If you're traveling to a YCS or regional, you probably don't want to be handicapped. There is nothing wrong with trying to help players do more with less, but at least be honest about it. Telling people they don't need s:p is only true if they are fine losing matches they could have won to save that $100-200. Anything else is cope.

The people complaining are the ones who AREN'T super-competitive and AREN'T travelling to events. It's totally fine to run Unicorn at locals, it's just locals. And if you're good enough to win without Little Knight, you'll probably earn it with your winnings.

Great video. Honestly, I think the reason most players believe S:P Little Knight to be this unfair advantage is due to really bad recontextualization skills. For some reason the majority seems to believe that S:P is comparable to DPE or Zoodiac Drident, and while this may be the case from a gameplay-design aspect, I digress if it's supposed to be from a *game impact* one.
Here's a small tip for anybody who struggles with Little Knight: Not many have realized yet that with AGOV's release, Konami didn't just print S:P Little Knight, but also her direct counter, TY-PHON Sky Crisis.The I:P Masquerena into S:P Little Knight literally gets outed by any monster if you put Sky Crisis into your Extra Deck. The same happens with boards like S:P + Baronne De Fleur. Just summon Sky Crisis, attack over Little Knight and continue to bounce Baronne in Main Phase 2. Those type of boards become laughable once you know you can easily out them with Sky Crisis.
Your oppoment tries a comeback? Stealing the beat-over Little Knight with Dharc the dark charmer will finish your opponent off with his own medicine.
So outing a sp big cancer just requires you to turnskip yourself with another high rarity card released in the same set? How is that good?

Ya know, playing full power unchain vs budget swordsoul to show how budget can complete is neat. If you know what you're doing, have a great grasp on the meta, and know good budget cards you can make a good budget deck. (I mean at that point you play enough you probably are willing to invest more to make a great deck for tourys but whatever.) However, as a swordsoul player, goddam was ss a bad example to show you can beat your oppent with skill. (Ignoring the fact you won more vs the guy you said is more skilled than you,) Swordsoul has a very low skill ceiling. Alot of decks do, as a matter of fact (Swordsoul, VS, invoked dog, infernoble, ect.) You can't expect to win because of being the more skilled player in yugioh. Deck building, for better or worse, is the main defining factor on if you win or lose vs your oppenent. In fact, that's why pros are mad at this format, it's almost impossible to make the best deck for a tourny in current format, but that is for a different time.
Swordsoul actually has a really high skill ceiling, but it's not shown in the first turn with Baronne Chixiao Blackout obviously.
It's when going second that play with that deck can get absolutely mind-bogglingly insane.
Obviously you can say the same thing about Unchained, there about two opening endboards that are popular, Full Board, or just Wave King Trap pass, but it is extremely non-linear going second.
That's where decks like swordsoul, infernoble, Unchained really make or break their duelists is by the ability to go second.
If you toss a Mo Ye into the board going second and it just gets impermed, game's over. PAK wasn't able to take Swordsoul to big events during Tear 0 format by getting Mo Ye impermed first action, watch his play from back then, it's absolutely insane.
