RTSR from our understanding after some testing seems to work based on base weapon damage. (tested with 2 friends on a fist only run) Meaning that upgrading a weapon improves the 20% damage buff based on how much base damage the weapon will now deal (scalling is ignored) As such, rings such as the old sun ring and same with spells do not proc the red tear effect and thus are useless. Only possible combination that might work would be the dragon torso roar as it applies weakness to damage, however if that works with old sun is something I don't know since its such a weird combination, I could test it later on and update my information.

In case of the RTSR ring during our individual sessions we noticed that our damage with RTSR changed drastically, after that we noticed that since fists do not scale but instead receive a flat base damage upgrade with Strength we did some more testing and turns out that only base damage matters. Also small detail, you forgot to mention that your damage on Freja was even worse because she is a highly magic resistant boss... and true moonlight sword deals magic damage ;p
@@freakystyley13 It happens, got to the veldstatd section, this is a bit harder to explain. As you likely know DS2 has both counter damage and sweet spot damage. Sweet spot is as the name suggest the "good" spot on any weapon that deals its maximum damage, easier to see with some weapon classes than others. Great example being halberds as their sweet spot is the blade/sharp bit meaning you want to be generally at a small distance from enemies. With swords that depends on class and its design but generally it should be at about the middle-top of the sword. Hence the damage fluctuations. Last addition, sorry if you already know this: Counter damage applies during animations or their recovery. Such as if you hit enemies during their attack or within 2 or so seconds of it ending for more damage. As a small note counter damage applies on bosses too obviously but enemies and bosses can also apply it on you. If you ever survived 1 hit from rotten as an example and then died with the same amount of health that's why, its especially noticeable if you get hit during a roll. Other random trivia, while Looking Glass knight is weak to magic damage he is also ironically fairly weak to lightning due to the rain in his arena, still magic will have better damage overall. And there are also other weird damage calculations based on the rings you wear, such as ring of blades increasing your physical damage. As it can in turn make your damage worse against certain bosses as physical conflicts with elemental damage types. But such differences are rarely noticeable making "rob" still worthwhile. And sorry for commenting so much, I just like spreading information :]
While it isn't my favourite its a lot better than a lot people make it out to be. I miss many of its quirks in the other games especially its NG+ & Bonfire Ascetics
