Simple Lathe Carriage DRO Addition

- We take a very inexpensive digital vernier style unit, modify it a bit to remove some unwanted aspects, and then set up a magnetic mount to the lathe rail. Mounting block is just 1.5 x 0.5 Al bar with inset neodymium magnets, onto which is fixed a piece of 1/8 plate with a bend. The display is fixed to that with double sided tape and the saddle is drilled to take a magnet for the end of the slider - that is about it!

It turned out really nicely, Chris. I've been wanting to make one for my tailstock as well but never thought of making one for the carriage until I saw this. Thanks!
Hey Dale,
Simple is as simple does!! I'd thought of it for ages but Randy Richard made one and that got me to get on with mine!
My partner has back issues, I feel your pain and hope it's getting better soon. Love your vids. Thanks
Hi Shaun,
Thank you. Unfortunately my disabilities are (old) age related and unlikely to get better - just a case of trying to work around the limitations. I'm 72 but my body in places seems to think it's 82! :-)
But a lot younger mind! Think cup half full, never half empty! and I think all of us who watch your videos really appreciate the time and effort you spend to pass on your knowledge and experience! Thank you!
Nice cheap addition well worth doing and it worked out nice. I'm going to do this to my raglan. Glad to see you back in action Chris.
Hi Robert - very inexpensive and basic!
Excellent! What you need is a cutter grinder, then you can sharpen all of your slot drills and end mills, I am off to the barn to make one of these now, very useful modification , something I never quite got around to doing. Chris B.
Hey Chris,
I still need one day to finish up the simple cutter grinder kit I started ages ago!
Nice little shop project Chris. I have an extra DRO I think I'll put on the cross slide using your magnetic attachments. Thanks for the idea!
Hi John,
It's certainly simple - pretty cheap too :)
Looks and sounds like you are feeling a bit better, nice big and easy to read display.
all the best
BS
Hey Brian,
Not so much better, as, too stubborn to quite give up :) Still limits my time tho dammit!
Yes, display is very readable... next add one to tail stock soon I hope.
You have solved some of the problems I might finf doing this to my lathe. Magnets are quite useful. Thanks a million.
Hi Jeffry,
Glad I made it even though very basic.
Excellent small project. Perfectly executed and perfectly explained. Thank you.
Thank you very much :)
Great idea! I'm going to get some cheap calipers to put on my lathe and my mill. Subbed
Hi Chris , useful idea , I used a angle bracket behind the nut of my threading dial to fit my dro. keep it up , all the best , Jim from Brookwood
Hey Jim,
Thanks. have started on my tail stock DRO addition - again it'll be super simple!
Nice job Chris. I also did one for the tail stock.
Hey Randy,
Thanks - a tail stock addition is next on the list I hope. Probably not as nice as yours though :)
I think you'll find more uses for this than you ever expected. When used in conjunction with the stop you recently made, you'll never look at the dials again. 😀
Hi Lee,
Yes, I expect it will prove most useful and next hopefully make the long overdue addition to the tailstock.
chris try drilling with bacon grease you will be totally amazed at how good this works and smells good as well. i tried this at work and i could not believe the difference.
Hi Jamie,
Now there's something different! Not sure it would help on Al though but worth a try on steel maybe :)
Nice build/addition
Thanks Chuck. Just "Mr Simple" :)
Good job there Chris, should be very useful.
Hi Harold,
I hope so - at least it was quite quick to put together.
Breast Idea the angle of the dangle looks great! Thanks
Hy Danne - angle of dangle worked out OK :)
Chris, a great addition to the machine. but where do you get the digital slide measure? Having trouble finding one like that. Cheers, Rx
Rex - I am pretty sure I found that on eBay - but of course near 4 years ago! I know it was not overly expensive. Hopefully available somewhere with some searching.:)
@@ChrisB257 Thanks for the quick response. I’m in Aussie and having a bit of difficulty finding such a scale. Plenty of digital vernier gauges, and other more expensive DROs. but a very tight budget. But thanks!
Picked up my first new to me mill, I'm adding this to my ever growing list of projects 😀. Cheers. P.s please keep also saying the sizes in metric, imperial measurements make no sense to me 😟
Hi Shaun,
Congrats on the new mill. Sorry about the inch measuring - I am too old to change. I'll try sometimes to give an approx equivalent in metric.
Appreciate that thanks, I need to print out an idiots guide or something, it just makes me laugh when watching these types of videos of precision engineering they say I need to shave of 13/57th or something silly 😀metric is sooo much easier ha ha
It's a xj9512, from eBay, needs some tlc but Iv started to learn so much from restoring older equipment rather than just using something that is new. Sounds daft but I feel I put more into what I make this way.
I'm going to do this to my lathe, so thank you for sharing.
Hi Chris,
Functionality over looks... I like this, and it's mainly my philosophy also... Saves time...!!!
I think I caught the "old age" also... Kinda too soon though... lol
Cheers, Pierre
Hi Pierre,
I do like pretty but sometimes the easy route does save time and effort. I tend to cut corners more these days! :)
That was neat i am going to do that for my drill press sook just on the quill..
Hi Scott,
Thank you.
G'day Chris I think that it's pretty good, I think later on I might do the same. Do you sharpen your end mills yourself or chuck them out all the best John
Hi John.
Well - simple but hopefully effective for what I want.
I have yet to complete a cutter sharpening jig I started ages ago! I keep all old cutters anyways as they can be re-purposed - it's the pack rat approach :)
ChrisB257 thanks for the reply Chris I really enjoy your vids, they are down to earth and easy to follow. I can appreciate how you can only do it in stages due to your health but I'm the same but we get there in the end! Kind regards John
now that will be very handy to use I can use that for my lathe :)
Simple to make Lawrence and the plastic vernier deal was only about $15.
Buen trabajo Chris, y como siempre muy cordial...y recuerde que sigo aprendiendo de usted!! Gracias
Y gracias por sus comentarios.
Great idea! Can you zero it out at any random place?
Hello Shane,
Yes - hit zero at any point - one reason it is so useful even if simple. Does Fractions and mm too.
Why didn't you put it on the back ways like I did on mine?
Not really practical - anyways - it was the quickest and simplest method. :) Easy to read too.
brilliant! 👍
hi chris i hope you are ok
Hi Andy,
Thanks - sort of OK but standing gets ever more limited.
nice job.
Thank you - it is simple but adequate.
I like it
Thanks Jim.
