  • Member of Parliament Poh Li San was Singapore’s second female military helicopter pilot and the first female aide-de-camp to the President of Singapore, S R Nathan. The trail she blazed paved the way for a younger generation of female pilots like Lou Yang, who has also made history by being the first female helicopter pilot in the 123 Squadron of the Republic of Singapore Air Force.

    These 3 part series are actually from TV Channel 8 which is Mandarin speaking Channel so that is why they speak in Mandarin. If it is from Vasantham, Suria or Channel 5 definitely it will be in Tamil, Malay or English respectively.

    Reminded me of the case of the female Apache pilot. Her career was ruined after an accident with a taxi. She sued the driver and won. But not sure if she managed to collect the compensation

    It's called Channel News ASIA for a reason, it's not the first time CNA has a non-english show shown but with an English sub. It's exactly because we are a multilingual country/ continent that why we have non english shows

      She does look native; either PRC-born (and moved to sg since young) or parents were first-gen PRs after migrating to SG and starting a family thereafter.
      For the active major, perhaps her spoken English might overly ‘leak’ out her origins (accent?), in a way affecting national security

      RSAF of course. They speak Mandarin because the programme is made originally for Channel 8 which is for Chinese viewers. Channel Suria and Vasantham for Malay and Indian respectively.

    Their mandarin are way way better than those kantang eating wannabes who cannot even string a simple mandarin sentence without putting in some English words. I like their efforts in speaking purely mandarin if needed to without English rojak. Truly impressed that they put all technical terms and even name of places in mandarin.

This is how they send the wrong message about our country when a member of parliament is speaking only mandarin on CNA.Though i have to believe this was done by Channel 8 originally otherwise wont make sense.

    PR(pun intended) failure by the SAF. By creating a Chinese documentary, what message are you sending to our local NSmen(Malays and Indians included), our foreign allies(USA), and foreign influence(propensity for China to affect our national defence policy)? The SAF's working language is in English, and commands given in Malay. Is the SAF kowtowing to the Chinese market to produce this? Why not just in a neutral language like English? I am pretty sure Major Yang is just a Singaporean with exceptional Mandarin, and I'm not doubting their service to the nation, but the optics for SAF to produce this will not help our standing amongst locals and globally. Other than perhaps to appease China that SG has a Chinese dominant army and easily influenced

      This was done originally for Channel 8 which is Mandarin speaking programme in 2021 relating to the Year of Celebrating SG women and 60th anniversary of the Women's Charter. Thus it shown here with 3 part series as per description above. That is why they are speaking in Mandarin.
      The TV programme shown in TV 5-episodic series features ten tenacious women, young and old, who emerge in uniform professions, politics, science, sports and culinary art.

      Thanks for the explanation, I admit that I did not notice this. However, bringing a Channel 8 Chinese show into a more internationally recognized CNA will open a can of worms. Is CNA now obligated to replay Tamil, Bahasa Melayu shows that support the Women's Charter? Because if not, then it will only show the international community that SG is bending to the Chinese market, and Chinese influence.
