    It was more of a Geller set than Deary. She originally wanted a September '76 [Jackson, MS] show included which he vetoed after taking over the project.
    It's not a set I visit often, same with the later "Platinum".
    Could and should have been so much better.
    One other thing guys, the original release actually came out in 1984.

    Hello guys, another good one. I picked up the CD back in the day. Thank you again 🎵🕺💥

    The original vinyl version actually came out in 1984, and it was one of my Christmas present’s from my parents that year. Two weeks before Christmas I found my present’s wrapped in a closet. I actually unwrapped the box set, carefully cut the plastic on the side, and played the home recordings vinyl. I wrapped it back up and put it back. I never told them until probably 10 years later. Glad to say I still have the vinyl version, and the CD version in my collection today. Hope you both are doing well. TCB⚡️

    Hey guys, glad it wasn't just me who thought this set was boring. I was underwhelmed due to the repetitive track listing (5 versions of "Don't Be Cruel - 4 of them on disc 3!). It's a lo-fi presentation and possibly the most dispensible of my Elvis CD sets. Historically interesting, including the booklet but it pales alongside the excellent (in my mind) "Platinum - A Life In Music" set which was around 75% unreleased recordings. Cheers guys

      Hi, Peter! Yeah, this one is definitely more in line with some of the newer sets like the 1969 box set, but as you say, the sound quality on most of it makes it harder as a straight-through listen. And I enjoyed Platinum a lot, too (John not as much, but that's ok!)

    The reason the first song of the second tupelo show was "love me tender" is because the beggining of the show as not recorded! Probably he opened it with heartbreak hotel. This is confirmed by the fact that "love me tender" is incomplete.

      @joaovictorfranca9398 You're very kind - and I really appreciate it! 😁 As Elvis said. "Everybody's entitled to one stupid-a** mistake," though we blew past that quota a bit on this episode! 🤣🤣

    Hi Guys, I’m with John on this one,it’s a nice but not a fan favourite, and I to have it’s from its original release on vinyl box set and later the cd box set. I had the great pleasure of meeting Joan at the This is Elvis launch in Memphis. At that time it was exciting times because it was a rumours as to what existed in the vaults, and Joan was telling us about these potential releases on this boxer and others. Such a nice lady R.I.P.

    Regardless of sound quality,getting the Tupelo concerts was amazing,first that a recording even exists! At least in 56 Elvis wasn't bored with these songs ,I love all Elvis's eras's,but i"ll take an Engaged Elvis any day over some of the better sounding 70's concerts where he did mostly the same song lists! Talk about repetition!

    • @EAPSociety
      @EAPSociety  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, Dan! That's definitely a good point on the 50's recordings; the sound quality might not be great, but the historical value of the performances can't be overstated - especially considering that some of those TV appearances are still hard to find (which is a travesty, really). I mean, I'm not one to talk, I can listen to 50s or 70s shows all day, lol!

      Haha,you and me both buddy,if I was rich I'd have every Elvis concert recording they put out! Spoken like the true fan you are! Yep,it's criminal the Dorsey shows, complete Milton Berels and Steve Allen aren't out remastered on Blu-ray!!!

    Got it with the 🌟shape hype sticker also. Absolutely interesting episode. Have the vinyl box also, but stupidly sold the LG photo of a young Elvis. Agree on the sound quality and the listen experience. Cd set was a sweet gift.

    The Silver and Gold sets were a revelation for Elvis fans/collectors at that time. They were no way “better” than some of the “boot” releases from the era, but still essential.
    John “Boring”? Ha Ha The 1956 television performances, the home recordings and the 1968 recordings? 😊
    Yes, the set was being assembled and produced by Joan Deary, then Greg Geller from Capital Records got involved and scrapped some of Joan’s ideas, (the September 1976 concert), but it’s still an essential piece for us fans and collectors. 😊

      That's great that you have those, Lee! And I'm sorry to hear your thinking about selling the collection at some point, but I definitely understand. That's another reason we like looking at these, too: for folks who can't, or don't, have these pieces in their collections - whether that be that they never did, or that they can't anymore.

      It's all good - I did some digging, and actually, Quincy's quote is in contention... I'll need to look further, because of this:
      "In 1956, Jones accepted a temporary job at the CBS stage show hosted by Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey as part of the studio band. It was there that Jones played second trumpet to support Elvis Presley’s first television performance."

      @@EAPSociety so who do we believe. The article or the words from Quincys own lips?

    • @EAPSociety
      @EAPSociety  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @gdepbb Well, Quincy also said a few other questionable things concerning Elvis - that one of the Dorseys called Elvis a racist, and that Elvis was "constantly being coached by Otis Blackwell" (paraphrasing) - and Otis said he never met Elvis. So, at best, it's hard to say.

    Hey John, at the end you mentioned someone putting all the tv specials including the Welcome Home sounding good in a box set.... Does the Elvis on Television, 1956-1960, 2 CD set not meet that requirement? I see they have a deluxe version that has a 100 page book inside (which is pictures from the large 400 page book of the same name) Curious if you don't consider this to meet your criteria, and if not, why? I was considering buying that CD set.
    Thanks for another great video, and btw, a lady I used to baby sit her dog for back in the 1980's, had this Golden Celebration set on vinyl. Many many moons later, I was happy to buy this on CD. I still enjoy the first 3 CDs and the book inside. :o) "Memories....."

    Agree with the thrust of your review I had a similar reaction regards the sound its a historical set rather a great listening experience my faves were the home recordings Suppose, Danny Boy and Dark Moon. I had a Bing Crosby allbum with Dark Moon and that sounded like a home recording as well. Quincy Jones changed his tune on Elvis in recent years. I just think he's turned nasty rather than had legitimate grievances. Its a shame we don't have better quality source material to represent the 50s but we just have to accept technology was not very advanced in the 50s Elvis career is almost a historical record of how recording and tv technology improved.
