The boys have grown from little children to such handsome young men. Megan looks wonderful, a blessing on the way...who knew. You should think about planting some kind of wind break for the area that gets so much wind.. Even when you get the soil built up the wind will be tearing up your garden. We did a row of 60 lilacs.. To try and break up the wind that hits our garden.. There's a lot things you could grow that would be better than lilacs I'm sure.
    I'm loving your compost area/routine..

Raise the turkeys until you can get an accurate number of males/females. Save one male for breeding. Butcher the other males when they are the weight you want. Save the hens and next spring incubate their eggs so you can raise your own. We have done this for years with miniature white turkeys. Meat can be frozen or canned.

send one of the kids up in the tree house with a camera and give us a tour. A more effective wind break rather than a row of something is to stagger bushes and trees about 2-3 rows in a zigzag pattern. It will increase the birds (and insect eating) and create a nice micro forest garden area. A wind break is most effective when it lets 70% of the wind to pass thru.

Suggestion for the area of land that gets too much wind, you could put a row or two of trees for a small orchard, either fruits or nuts, or build a quick post and wire frame for climbing bushes, such as blackberries and whatnot, to not only act as a windbreak but also provide produce. Considering the wide-open area and lack of shade, you'd want to look for something sun-loving. Or maybe just plant a bunch of sunflowers, they would thrive in an area like that, once it's been improved by the chickens.

Another thing to consider is that your chickens are playing an active part in the carbon cycle. As the grass thrives and grows greener, it pull more carbon out of the atmosphere (sequesters) and give us more oxygen in return.

I grew up with the Waltons and Little House on the Prairie. Today's kids are growing up with all of you Homesteaders - what a good thing. Thanks for sharing homestead life with a new (and not so new) generation. Be well and God bless.🙏🙂🌹

You are raising those boys right and they will appreciate it. So much to do and learn.
Yes, it’s a busy time on the homestead. We have a farm, so it’s planting time. Plus, we are just now putting in more garden crops.
I always talk to our animals, which are simply chickens and cats - oh, and the birds, bees, and whatever else I find to talk to! 😂 You have an amazing place and will see the fruits of your labor in no time. Happy homesteading!

ENJOY - these are the best years of your life. I so miss our farm and kids. We had a 300 acre farm in Wisconsin back in the day. We are now retired living in a small cabin just south of Lake Superior WI. Our daughter now has a 120 acre farm near Greenbay WI and we are so proud of her. It's a wonderful life!! Loads of work but can't think of a better way to live. God Bless!! Can't wait for the new baby!!!!

It’s wonderful the way you share the workload on your farm! With four boys, you won’t have much work when they get older! I love your land! Your garden is really nice. I grew up on a very sloped property in Appalachia. My parents grew wonderful food there. We had a large garden very close to our house and some small “patches” of extra vegetables in other places. Dad’s aunt had moved away and her property joined ours and she had land at the bottom of our hill that was flat, so we grew extra food there too. My mother loved canning and we always had jars of vegetables to share.
You are really getting a lot done on your land. I like the way your farm is “rolling” land. It’s really pretty! I can’t wait to watch more of your videos!
We grew lots of chickens, too. I am in my seventies now and I’m certainly enjoying videos of your farm, as they remind me of my life when I was young! Although I was rather tired of helping with the farm work, canning vegetables and all, I went to college and became a teacher. Yet I will always enjoy seeing others grow plants and raise animals and chickens! Everyone stays busy all day and sleep very well, too!

I can't wait until I find the property for our homestead! I really envy your life! I have a question about that lifestyle, do I HAVE to grow the man bun? lol
Ben it takes a real man to not put the blame on someone else (driver) and admit that you should have covered the insulation. You're young enough to be my son but I admire you very much and wish I had half the skills you do. Some advice on Meg while she is pregnant, give her whatever she wants. lol

I just love the way your boy's treat the chicken and duck, just wish all children are like that, a credit to you both, for teaching them the right way to behave around farm animals! I feel so many farm animals are tortured by the children.
Yes, you do, do a lot of work on your farm, but look at it once that is done your work load will be less, It's just now when there are lot's of things to do is a really, really busy time, but know you are doing great work for your family!
Your boys are good workers also, they are going to be awesome adults! Thanks to you for all you do! Take care that way, much Blessings to you all!

It's amazing how much the pigs do. So do y'all not have an issue with feral hogs? We do here on the Gulf Coast of Tx. JUST HORRIBLE! So we can't let our domestic hogs pasture with only the electric fence. It would be great if we could. Congratulations on your efforts and new baby! BTW! ARIAT BOOTS ROCK! YES THEY DO! KUDOS! We love watching y'all's journey and hope you have a great bounty. We just got 8in.of rain and expect more today. I pray y'all don't get it out your way! GODBLESS!

This is your first year on your homestead and you are rebuilding a house, starting your garden and animals, home schooling your kids, growing a new kid, and running the 2 businesses, and filming a vlog! You look happy! And your boys are growing into kind, accomplished, accountable young men! Blessing to you all!

Who doesn't talk to their animals? That would be weird not to. When one of my Indian runner ducks sees me heading towards them, she does her duck dance( turns in a circle & flaps her wings) & quacks. Love it!
    Your homestead is looking great!

Ben you are doing an excellent job with the MC ing of the channel these days. How multi talented you are. Nice to let Meg do her "thing". She talked her way thru every state and does a great job of it. But maybe it's time to rest a bit. Yes your youngin's are ready to handle some of the chores. Builds strong bodies and confident young men. I laugh at some of them wearing boots and others are barefoot. They've adapted well to the homestead. Good ol country folks.
Thanks for acknowledging their contribution. Well done. Have a warmer weekend.

Our boys are responsible for the poultry and they have areas of responsibility. Why don't you take some of the leaves and things you can rake up from where the pigs first were and use that to amend your garden? It's been more than 90 days since they were there? Ducks use the water to clean out their nostrils, they swish and it goes everywhere. I think ducks can go out at 4 weeks, they're very hardy. Ours have a small structure with a roof and 1 wall that they prefer over the coop even when it's snowing. Great job on your home! Y'all need a berry patch.
