I virtually grew up in my Grama's greenhouse and her gardens, and I can almost still smell that rich, fecund earth as I watch you turning your compost heap and mulching the new plantings. If your lawn mower collects your grass clippings you could run over the leaves and collect them up that way.

My goodness Buggie is growing so fast. She is adorable!
My mother canned everything that she could. She was big on canning lots of jams and jellies. When she cooked pancakes, she would take a jar of jam or jelly, add some water to the jam and then heat it up and serve it as syrup. I didn't know what store bought syrup was until I was in high school. I'd rather have the homemade syrup made from fruit.

Secondly to your cranberry. It doesnt need the bog to grow. The bog is just how they harvest it because the plants are to delicate for mechine picking and the berries are hollow. So they flood the field and then use a 'beater" to loose the berries wich then float and are skimmed off the bog surface
That is so good to know! I grew up in Wisconsin and recall the harvest story... but am unaware that they do not require wet marshy areas to actually grow! I may send a few plants to family as gifts!!

Meg...when the hops come in next summer they would be great in a new Beer/ Hops soap. It was a big hit when I was making soap, I added stout FO and they always sold out.
I bet Bug just LOVES being on your backs all of the time when y'all are working. Keeps her occupied watching... And i am sure she is learning as she goes. She will be your little farm girl in no time! :)

check your hardy kiwi has a male and a female plant intertwined in pot or if the two pots have separate male and female - they are a vine which grows rampantly but you do need male and female planted together. produces smooth skinned grape size fruit which are great tasting and will do best on a protected wall or fence. we have never trimmed ours and it is very productive with the vine now measuring 16ft wide and 7ft tall.

Rake the leaves on a large tarp then drag them to the compost pile. Cuts down on the wheel barrel trips!
i agree ! growing up on a farm we used large 15'x20' burlap sheets. I now use an 18' sheet of house wrap

I stumbled across “garden tea” one year when I put a huge pile of oak leaves into a very large hole ridden stock tank. It rained a lot and I saw it was actually holding water, and becoming very putrid. I watered my caged tomatoes with that brown tea, and then put the leaves that had not entirely broke down, also under the tomatoes. Well, as you might imagine. That year we grew five to six foot lush tomatoes bushes, but few tomatoes. Lol. Great lesson.
Doris, it sounds like it really did work, but after wards, some fertilizer to promote blooms and fruiting was needed

if you want to keep the grass down around the base of the orchard trees, i use the removable lids from plastic barrels, cut hole in and then place at the base of the tree with bricks on to keep them on the ground, the grass withers away, it also helps when you mowing the lawn too....

I’d put the American cranberry down by the creek. I’d make a pergola the full length on the front of the house and grow the hops on both sides. You’ll have additional shade at the front of the house as they grow up that pergola.
Amazing video. Those are amazing gifts from Stark. Not sure what kind of fig tree that is but they can get huge. Not telling u what to do on your land but you may want to put her in the orchard.

Boy, I have so much to learn about compost. Lottsa little tidbits of info in this video that can help, appreciate that. This was the first year after I built the garden and the soil need a lot of organic matter and compost. My compost pile sucks pretty bad though. Brown, green then brown again...seems easy but you gotta put in the work. That'll be my winter viewing pleasures on TH-cam...studying compost. How to make it, how to use it, what can go in, how moist should it be. Be sure to give some updates as you go along. Gotta build an enclosure cause my Old English Sheepdog keeps rummaging in there. Great job with those berries. The bed looks great. Just a little tip for the blackberries, though. For best production, they need trellising and to be pruned. It doesn't take much time to do that, but you will need to pay attention to the length of the canes. Top them when they get to 5 or 6 feet to encourage the laterals. Laterals are where the berries come from. Trim the laterals in the spring to about 23 inches and your plants will explode with berries. After they're done, trim off the spent canes, compost them, and hang the new canes.
You can then use the cuttings from the tips to create new blackberry plants if you want. Just use Ben's willow water and a pot of soil. Cut all but one leaf set off and put at least two leaf nodes under the surface of the soil then water it with the willow water. Finally, trim off all but one leaf and cut that leaf in half if it's more than about an inch long and wide. This will encourage it to force growth of roots.

Thank you for the compost tips. Though I’ve gardened off and on for forty years, I’ve never used compost but used manure to fertilize. I am working towards a more organic garden and your ideas help a lot. Thank you. I love your vlogs and I get a lot of good ideas from them.

Fig trees can get enormous. I'm thinking it will outgrow that spot in no time DEPENDING ON VARIETY PERHAPS? What kind of fig did you get? I have a corkey sweet that fruits spring AND fall. 😋 DELICIOUSLY SWEET.

We were the same as kids growing up on a dairy farm in Queensland Australia. Only time we wore boots was in winter. Nowhere near as cold as where you are probably.
Buggy is such a happy little girl and so well behaved as long as she's near Mom & Dad!!♥️♥️She's not afraid of anything and she loves the dirt and the animals definitely the garden like her parents! Very good video on mulching was a good Theme of "Keep it simple… Pretty much anything goes... and respect a few basic Rules"!
I think that when children grow up doing things with their parents outdoors and around the garden and animals and family projects they will always have that teamwork attitude in their adult life whether they live on a farm or not. They'll Become good Mates with their spouses; The good employees for their bosses; be good friends who you can Count on for GOOD HELP; & SO APPRECIATIVE OF THEIR PARENTS FOR EVERYTHING THEY HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN & EXPERIENCE (& EAT) GROWING UP in a HARDWORKING, TEAM EFFORT, LOVING FAMILY♥️♥️

I live in SC, 15 miles east of Augusta Ga. I realize that you are farther north but a trick we use for citrus seedlings we have used for wintering has been to use clear garbage bags upside down for mini greenhouses. I get them from friends of mine who work at hotels or large restaurants.

Some shade is good for the garden, I grow my lettuce in the shade so I have it for longer into the spring and summer

hey, that's what we have always done, I've got a nephew who will grow to nearly 7ft, we've marked it on our door frame.
Worst case the earth will correct any mistakes we do with compost. It always finds a way. 🥰 Guess that’s why it’s called mother earth. Always fixing the kids’ mistakes.
I just started ripping out my garden and made a compost pile. I hope it’s ready for next year garden.
Best thing I ever did for compost production is aquire a pull behind lawn sweeper, I used about 60 tons over summer putting in my market garden so its imperative that I can make a lot before its time for top offs on the rows
A key component of growing cranberries is that they require a unique environment. The vines or shrubs thrive in layers of gravel, then acidic peat soil and sand.
They are grown in boggy areas in Wisconsin. I recall stories of them being harvested by canoe! Unaware if there may be dryland cranberries. The berries float... bad ones sink.
I love how you say just try it! You guys have inspired me to "just try" so many things. I made my first productive garden this year, got chickens and have even started making my own soap. I love watching you guys!

One thing I'd heard of and like to try to add is fermented comfrey or weeds as a supplement to the garden. Supposed to smell good and add great nutrients and biology to the garden.
Have you ever looked into worm tea (aka: black gold)? You take worm castings and add them to oxygenated water with molasses (to feed the enzymes) and it is supposed to be, well, gold. You can only feed your worms manure tho. You take the water and spray it onto plants and soil.
Welcome home! We have plenty of carbon with all the wood chips we have but need more nitrogen for our compost piles. Maybe I'll try the fish emulsion. Nice score on the plants! -Mike

Ben I am an almost 64 yr old homesteader doing it on my own with 5 acres. What did you use to secure your pallets for your compost bin? I tried using T posts and that was an epic fail. But I am going to put it in my front yard (where my garden is) what a great idea!!!! I make the most beautiful soil. Just remember all it takes is even parts of green and brown and water. Cardboard is FANTASTIC. Many don't like to use it because of the glue in it, but I say...Hey it all breaks down and mother nature has a way of cleaning things up. Cardboard in my experience really speeds up the break down process. I throw in some of my chicken coop clean up in it too and ohhhh how it produces worms! Love you guys and to me, you are the most beautiful all American couple. You really have it all. You don't need a BIG house. Kids grow and then you have a huge dwelling and really how much time do you spend in your home? (except for winter) lol. Well, let me take a little bit back....your family grows once your kids get married then the house seems really small. Imagine 5-6 children with their wives and your grandbabies. Lol.

Hey guys...im from Oregon and i find it absolutly amazing watching you guys dig into your gardens and just digging up your earth layers out there. I see red dirt. Im not used to seeing red dirt i think its beautiful. Im used to seeing brown and black dirt. But i really like the Red.
Me too, in Houston, Texas we have clay, they call it gumbo, grey gumbo, black gumbo, once in awhile red gumbo, and on occasion some sand!!

I just got two Cranberry plants from Stark! Hope they grow here I'm East Tennessee!
YES, AMERICAN CRANBERRY should be like the Pilgram Cranberry. You can plant them in the crack/books & crannies in a rock pile, or a rock ledge and let them grow over the ridge. They are acidic lovers like blueberries & asparagus. Plant with a little coffee grounds & a little epsom salts. They don't need much care. But homemade cranberries at Thanksgiving dinner is awesome.

It's easier to put down wet cardboard and mulch and THEN cut and plant through the layers than putting cardboard in between after planting. Done both, and it's way more time efficient to plant afterwards. Love to see you smile so much
