Quaint Streets and Pretty Lanes - Padstow Town walk, Cornwall

  • Have you explored Padstow before? I mean really explored every nook and cranny? What's your favourite part of Padstow?
Padstow is intrinsically linked with the sea and was once a ship building port of renown. It is also on the the Saint's Way, an old pilgrimage route from Ireland to France and beyond. Both links have influenced the development of the town. Join us as we follow a town walk that leads us from the harbour along quaint back streets and pretty lanes where we discover clues about its past, some intriguing buildings, beautiful cottages and even a herd of fallow deer.
The church of St Petroc has been a religious site since 518 AD when St Petroc first sailed from Ireland on a coracle. As always there is much to see and comment on in the church and graveyard. We discover graves bearing the title of 'Master Mariner', a mariner of vast experience, able to sail any ship with any cargo to anywhere. Hardly surprising when you consider how important the port of Padstow has been over the centuries.
Said to stand on the site of an old Priory or monastery, Prideuax Place is an Elizabethan Manor house with mullioned windows, creeper hung walls, castellations and a wonderful old gateway. The fallow deer herd is thought to date back to Roman times and it is said that if the herd dies out the Prideaux family will die out too.
if you know anything of interest please feel free to add in the comments.
For the exact route, please watch our virtual step-by-step video which will be released on Sunday 25th April 2021.
    The standard description bit…
We are Sarah and Andrew and we film our walks around Cornwall and publish on TH-cam, usually weekly. Sometimes we stay in accommodation in Cornwall and upload our vlog. Sarah is fascinated by sea glass and likes to collect it so there may be the occasional sea glass video too. The channel is a hobby and we both have normal day jobs!
    Frequently asked questions:
    What camera do we use?
Since December 2018 we have used: Canon Powershot G7x MkII
How do I find the books you use?
Most are still in print although some we pick up in charity shops and may be available on Amazon secondhand. Please refer to the video for the book titles. Every video shows the book three times. Sorry but we can’t put a link in every description.
Best time of year to visit Cornwall?
We love May, June for flora and fauna, July and September for spectacular scenery.
    What is your dog’s name?
Sorry but we do not release the name of our dog, perhaps you can make up your own name for him.

In Germany in our today's evening TV program they showed a new Rosamunde Pilcher Film.....playing in PADSTOW !! Filmed last autumn. The Alms House they used as a doktor and a shop in the next street as an old cinema.... Prideaux Place ( outside and inside) is also seen.....isn't it funny ? 🤭
Lovely video and walk with you.🤗

Ghost town in winter. Often go for a walk round of a nice evening, rarely see anyone. Seen the prices paid for small properties, no parking facilities. Unbelievable, course not locals buying

@@Thursdaym2 of course not. No one local can afford to. We have lost a class worth of children gradually and now have mixed aged classes because young families have been priced out of their town. 🤦‍♀️

Feeling so spoilt again ~ what an incredible walk, exploring amazing architecture! I thought that was inventive of the people in the adjoining houses with the flying freehold...painting exactly the boundary of their territory! Just love it when you find those almost hidden alleyways. As you say, it really is a special moment in time ~ so peaceful with so fewer people around, excepting of course church bells, crows & seagulls (but I love them!) x

Very interested in the gravestone of the 7 year old and the rhyme. I wondered if the bit about the fall of man polluting etc was referring to the fall of adam and eve and the start of sin or polluting of the earth.

    • @TheSWolfe
      @TheSWolfe 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I've a feeling that verse was referring to "original sin" that certain religions believe all to have been born burdened with, even the most innocent of babes. I think it results from the Christian origin story re Adam & Eve & the Serpent in the Garden of Eden. Perhaps babes are baptised to rid/protect them from this, so that if they die in infancy, their wee souls shall go to Heaven. This is an educated guess from someone not of the flock, perhaps someone of the Catholic/Christian faith might better explain. That's just what I inferred from reading the headstone.

It is early in the morning here on the east side of the States. I jumped over to the internet to see what i could find out about the little girl's grave and the meaning with no luck. Learned a fair bit but not that. What a wonderful way to start the day!
I think Andrew and my husband Michael should sit down for a pun exchange. They seem to be cut from the same cloth. Our job would be to resist the laugh without ruining the party. I don't know, as i am always tossing him a line. Well, if we can't beat the, join them. I thought Andrew just kept getting better as the day progressed.
Padstow is fanTAStic but I would not enjoy it jam paced with people like the pictures i saw around Padstow in search of the stories behind the gravestones at St. Padroc's church yard. I could try to find another seaside village that is not as busy but then it wouldn't be Padstow. So i shall find an off season time to visit.
Thank you for another lovely video! R

Padstow, like I've never seen it before! Oh my, how quiet was that? I thought at first you had gone down at 6am in the morning! But the clock on the church chiming told otherwise! It really is a lovely town, but sooooooo overcrowded in the tourist season. I have a silver Celtic cross I wear all the time, bought in a little shop off the quay a LONG time ago. Took a boat trip out to see the seals last time we were there. We like to take the little ferry over from Rock if we visit, as parking is a bit of a nightmare usually. But the history is so interesting & as you show in your video, the streets are quaint and pretty. And fish & chips on the quayside from Rick's place are the bizz! J x

Must admit that the COVID restrictions have been a silver lining for us, less traffic etc - when we have been able to get out! We plan our videos in the summer months to avoid, in the nicest sense, the busier parts of Cornwall. Like you say, parking and traffic, and a long journey home, can make it quite exhausting! Having visited Padstow several years ago, we loved this around town walk and were inspired to revisit the place again soon. By the way, Andrew's interest in post boxes reminded me of the post boxes we saw on a couple of former British colonial Caribbean islands during a cruise there two years ago. I was astounded, although probably shouldn't have been surprised, to see that the post boxes there are exactly the same as the one Andrew admires here... they were still even painted red!
