Bland, Boring & Soulless - The MOST DEPRESSING Place in the UK 2024

- Ilivehere.co.uk, a scathing, satirical website, launched a reader vote to find out where the most depressing place in the UK is. They wanted somewhere bland, boring and soulless, devoid of culture and where residents exist rather than live.
The results were published in February this year and a popular Cornish coastal town was voted No. 1!. We were so shocked at the results we felt compelled to take a look.
The standard description bit…
We are Sarah and Andrew and we film around Cornwall and publish on TH-cam, usually weekly. Sometimes we stay in accommodation in Cornwall and upload our vlog. Sarah is fascinated by sea glass and likes to collect it so there may be the occasional sea glass video too. The channel is a hobby and we both have normal day jobs!
Unfortunately we cannot answer comments coming in more than a week after the publishing date of the video.
Frequently asked questions:
Do we do meet ups?
We regularly receive requests to meet up from viewers and subscribers, but unfortunately we do not have availability to be able to do this.
The channel is a very time consuming hobby, fitted around our employment and family commitments. Setting aside time for meet ups, means that we are not able to film and edit our weekly videos that you love to watch.
If you happen to bump into us while out and about, we will be more than happy to have a quick chat!
Sarah and Andrew
What camera do we use?
Since December 2018 we have used: Canon Powershot G7x MkII
How do I find the books you use?
Most are still in print although some we pick up in charity shops and may be available on Amazon secondhand. Please refer to the video for the book titles. Every video shows the book title. Sorry but we can’t put a link in every description.
Best time of year to visit Cornwall?
We love May, June for flora and fauna, July and September for spectacular scenery.
What is your dog’s name?
Sorry but we do not release the name of our dogs, perhaps you can make up your own name for them.

Any "depressed" town located near the sea must offer a better environment than a "depressed" town in the middle of the country?
Especially if you like fish......
In January - April maybe but not in Summer! Am a Londoner with many corniche holidays behind me! Maybe holiday homes left empty maybe ?
@@StewartFrampton-bg2tv The whole demographics of our country has changed and not for best, you can't tell me that has nothing to do with the demise of said towns.
Exactly that.British Govt are intent on destroying Britain
I lived in Torbay for 3.5yrs 25yrs ago & nearly ended up an antidepressants 😢 Wolverhampton is depressing, but we have facilities & an economy
I honestly can’t believe that, no way is Falmouth the most depressing town!
Redruth, Camborne, St Austell all much worse. So too Bridgwater, Shepton Mallet, Barnstaple......just in the Westcountry.
@@stephfoxwell4620Agree with all of them. Add in Warminster and frankly most Somerset towns.
@@Starlight22215 Gosh yes. I forgot Chard, Yeovil and Minehead.
We stayed in Falmouth last july for a week. It was great, and we stayed at the kiddly in your video. We will definitely stay here again. It's fantastic. Loads to see and do. We loved it.
I read this elsewhere -
"The Sunday Times has named Falmouth as being among the best places to live in 2024. Falmouth was included in the 2024 Sunday Times Best Places to Live Supplement to the delight of the team behind the town's success as Cornwall's events capital."
I suspect this is much more balanced than the survey.
Thank you for the video.
Your VT's are always good. What a load of rubbish was that survey. I have lived in Falmouth and holiday now every year Falmouth is an absolutely wonderful place!!
Luv Falmouth, and getting on the little ferry to St Mawes - I often think that Falmouth is like Bath by the sea 🌅
Completely and utterly unwarranted appraisal for this fantastic town. Just goes to show how subjective this can be.
The only people who fill in surveys are the professional whingers with nothing better to do. We love Falmouth and visit every year.
We do as well, but do have some distant family links. OK, it's not known as a beach resort but it has lovely beaches and is a fun town, IMO. Don't tell anyone, because it is a secret, but a cup of tea at the top of Trago's can be enjoyed with the most lovely views of the harbour and the Fall.
Been going to Cornwall for over 50 years our son and family moved down 5 years ago so we just have to keep going😄😄
I went to Falmouth years ago and it was acceptable!
@@gregb49They have a Trago Mills in Merthyr Tydfil nowadays!
This list is ridiculous 😅😅😅
Your video is great fun, information and a little glimpse inside cornish life.
Always love your sense of humour !
I live in Falmouth and love it. x
Beautiful Video. Thanks for sharing .🥰
Glad you enjoyed it! Sarah :)
I must be boring as well then-I love Falmouth- however, I may not be as enthusiastic in the rain and cold on the 5th February when this survey was dated. I think most seaside places would struggle to find very much enthusiasm at that time of the year. Andrew did make me laugh - I agree - Possibly a few bored students started this ball rolling and did it for a laugh. Now for the fun bit - Falmouth has lovely beaches, great scenery, lots of small interesting shops and a good calendar of events. We loved the video Sarah and Andrew - as usual you are the ‘stars’ Well done,
When living in Helston , I worked at the Falmouth Hotel , you showed it in your video , loved the town , always vibrant and something to do and see , could think of a lot worse places to live for sure .
Hi guys , my wife and I have visited Falmouth on quite a few occasions whilst on holiday in Kernow. No way is Falmouth the worst town in Britain. Plenty shops as per your video, Gyllygvase beach, Swanpool beach, Pendennis Castle all well worth a visit. We had a lovely river cruise up the river Fal and saw some beautiful big houses up at Carrick Roads. Another time we took a sail over to St Mawes. Nowt wrong with Falmouth. On the other hand we live about 15 mls or so from Alloa which deserves to be the list. Great video as usual.Thank you both once again.Take care.
Another great video , they always must include cake or a pastie , thank you for bringing them to us 👍
Someone should take a good look at Margate in Kent. There are more empty shops than shops that are occupied, and Margate is a dump .
Utter rubbish!, Falmouth is one of the most vibrant towns in the South West. Regular visitor for many years now and hope to continue to visit for many years to come.
Completely agree about Trago.. Always go in and come out with things I never knew I needed which come in handy somewhere..Can also recommend their cafe; excellent value and spectacular views of the harbour and estuary.
Survey is very biased and can safely be ignored by normal thinking people. A load of rubbish.
Keep up the good work guys; Fridays are not the same without you.
I can say without hesitation that the kind of people who denigrated Falmouth won’t like the word “Normal”.
Visiting it is not the same as living there.
@@TheBuckspygmy No its not, but a vist to many places gives you a good over veiw of what a place has to offer.
@@jameskrell4392 Which in the case of Falmouth is not a lot.
Can't believe Falmouth is number one... crazy... and if Wells is on the list 🤷... don't understand at all. I think many towns have suffered since the pandemic. I don't think these random surveys are anything to go by are they 😜. Thanks for proving this guys 🙏😁💖
Wow! I never expected that. I love Falmouth….maybe I’m boring and bland! 😂
It looks busy there.
I would say that Margate and Chatham in Kent or Croydon are far worse places to live.
Every high street is suffering in the uk but I would rather live by the sea or in the countryside. Much pretier. 💗
We did notice it is looking tired , we have visited several times but last visit in 2022 we did feel it was looking tired , but so are alot of places also have gone down Hill , i still love the area it has soo much to see and visit ,i love Cornwall its simply our Heaven
So happy to watch todays post in Falmouth and watch you sticking up sor Falmouth. We love this town. Since our first visit many years ago we have never experienced anything other that friendly people. We stay in a locally owned bed and breakfast, Trelawney House. Our last
stay was four weeks in March of 2023 and in May for a week. We feel at home in Falmouth. We awaysndo our best to become :local:. The train service was great as well as the bus service. Falmouth is a great base for travel to other parts of Cornwall. I hope this review does not deter visitors.
Falmouth is one of my favorite places to visit in Cornwall😬🤷♀️
Oh, that survey is simply preposterous! We visited Falmouth last June and loved it
Hi Andrew and Sarah this was thought up by someone who has NEVER set foot in Falmouth or has NEVER set foot outside of London
I'm sure a group of enthusiastic volunteers could clear the rubbish and paint over the graffiti quite quickly.
Excellent video.
I live in other end of uk. I’ve never been to Cornwall.
Falmouth looks pretty good to me. I’d happily have a good look round there.
Great video. Thanks.
Lovemy video agson 😊 I have visited Falmouth twice and I liked it a lot. Colourful and lively and a lot to offer. That was both times in July. Torunn 🥰
I adore Falmouth. Have done since we holidayed there in my early teens. It's a place where I'd love to live. They've obviously never visited Redditch!
We just can’t believe what you said that Falmouth was voted the worst depressing place in the Uk, when we come to the uk for a holiday we always stay in Falmouth for two weeks at a time, we just love it, we stay in the Falmouth Hotel and use it as a base to visit other places in Cornwall it’s our favourite place to be , we live in a small coastal town in South Australia 🇦🇺 We just love your videos, Elizabeth and Barry from Oz 🇦🇺 🐬 🐳
Made many visits to Cornwall & even stayed in Falmouth several times - can be a bit empty even in summer between festivals but always enjoyed it.
Another fun video. Thanks so much. I believe they say there is no such thing as bad publicity. Falmouth is making all the lists so lots of attention. We haven't been there, maybe our next visit.
I live about 20 minutes away from Falmouth and I love it there I’d happily move into Falmouth x
We love Falmouth and were there in March, we swam off the Greenbank harbour steps and it was magical floating at dusk with the lights twinkling in the harbour. We walked to Pendennis Point, it’s exhilarating in a gale! The beaches are fabulous. Love the high street too with its quirky alleyways, cafes and shops, great for urban sketching. Of course it’s a bit run down, like so many seaside towns, but it’s an amazing place nonetheless.❤
You swam in the sewage?
Hi Sarah and Andrew. I have been to Falmouth and I loved it. I don't understand why one survey voted it the worst place to live and the other voted it 3rd from the top in the best place to live as Andrew said it doesn't make sense.
I always used to love visiting Falmouth - and the rest of Cornwall too. Haven't been for a few years but I would still visit if I were back in the area. As a photographer my favourite part is the harbour, and of course we always used to love going to Trago Mills.
only found your channel few weeks ago, i live in surrey, problem is after being shut down for nearly 3 years, think we have all got places that are rubbish, slowly its all coming back 👍
Falmouth has some of the most expensive and desirable housing stock in Cornwall. The views of the Fal Estuary are incredible. It has character, culture and history in spades. There is loads going on, even in winter - unlike some Cornish towns. It has a really good balance of tourism with local industries and businesses, again unlike some Cornish towns. It has a great range of places to eat really decent food at all price levels. It has a university, and good schools. Most people would kill to live there. Rumour has it that ospreys are now nesting on the Fal this year, so even they are keen...!
To be fair it looks quite nice and there is a lot going on plus you have that 'seaside' vibe going on!😊
I like Falmouth .We always make sure to visit when we're in Cornwall on holiday .
I really can’t understand why Falmouth was voted the most depressing town. We live just 20 minutes away from Falmouth. Yes like a lot of town centres, shops have shut and it needs a bit of upgrading. But lots of events going on. We are off to The 2024 Falmouth Sea Shanty Festival, which we love and has a great buzz. Last year the Tall Ships event was fabulous.
That survey looks ABIT pants to me😂 the puns this week were amazing😊 I've never visited Falmouth but it looks like a lovely place
I love Falmouth❣️My home town as a child . Falmouth had so much to offer . Was there in May, and will be back again in August. Having said that Some buildings could use painting.
On one of your other videos Falmouth was rated 3rd best to live ..
I’d say it’s a fab place to live !!!!!!!!!!!
I can’t help thinking that Peterborough residents voted for Falmouth, so Peterborough didn’t top the list…
Personally I love visiting Falmouth, and I visit a few times a year, as I’m in Devon so not too far. The town has lots of small independent shops, loads of restaurants with cuisine from all round the world, pubs with character plus lovely beaches and many other places and attractions to visit. I love the little alleys that lead down to the sea, the bunting above the high street, the vibrancy of the town (maybe helped by the fact it’s a university town)…admittedly I’ve never lived there, but would happily live nearby, as I’m a country girl at heart and prefer to live rural.
Having lived for years near Croydon (my husband worked in Croydon for many years), I can honestly say that Falmouth is a million times better, and I’ll be back in Falmouth in September!
i parked up in my van many times in Falmouth...lovely place to stay
I like Falmouth as many many other people do.
The website people who put this “Most Depressing Place in UK” should visit these places instead of taking the word of unknown and seemingly unverified voters. It made for an interesting video though, thanks you two 😁
Oh dear ... we have been to Falmouth numerous times and stayed at the fabulous Falmouth Hotel. Nothing wrong with Falmouth. I think all towns have their depressed areas. We live a few miles from Chatham on the list... no comparison. Would choose Falmouth any day. Loving your videos. Look forward to them every Friday. Thank you Sarah and Andrew.
Looks an intresting place to visit.
I live in Cornwall and visit Falmouth often. Love the town. It’s got a good vibe. Gyllyngvase is a beautiful beach and there are some stunning views all round. Shops are good, lots of independents and there are plenty of good places to eat. Can’t fault it really. I am originally from Walsall-if you are looking for a truly depressing town that surely has to be high on anyone’s list! Felt very depressed last time I went back to visit.
We adore Falmouth, love the diversity and there is a ton of things to do, if you ever get bored of the sea ( impossible) However, I have one big bug bear, the council need to clean the streets. The dog and bird poo everywhere drives me crazy 😮
Utterly ridiculous by the looks of it! How can it be worse than Croydon?! I live near Croydon and am trying to 'big it up' by photographing and drawing the more scenic sites.....!! Most people I know say don't bother. And Crawley?!! I think Falmouth looks lovely.
Briilliant riposte Sarah and Andrew! The criticisms must be from people who've never properly visited Falmouth and explored the beautiful historic harbour or elegant streets full of stunning Victorian & Georgian architecture, and quaint tucked away cottages. Plus so many wonderful quirky features! My only criticism of Falmouth would be the figurehead lady who needs a little refresher on the lipstick front! :)
Lol! I noticed that too! A bit of cherry red wouldn’t go amiss! Sarah :)
When I lived and worked in Falmouth in the 1960s, some hoteliers used to transport staff to the job centre to sign on for unemployment benefit whilst employed at the hotel. I agree that today Falmouth is no worse than other down-at-heel south coast resorts like Plymouth, Torquay and Bournemouth.
I live near Peterborough and love visiting it. The best town in Cambridgeshire for wheel chair access. Some housing areas look past their best (but this is the same everywhere), but the cathedral and shopping areas are worth a visit. I think if people think their area is depressing then they are not engaging with their community to help improve it. Those that make an effort- I congratulate you.
i spotted lewes in sussex on there , thats 6 miles from my home , also crawley is set at no10, thats where i work ,
Interesting watch like and shared out in you tube community. ⌚
Falmouth looks great. Great program.
Living near Swindon and having recently visited Falmouth on holiday, my personal feeling is i think Falmouth was unfairly ranked 1, Swindon should be top 3 minimum it’s a dreadful boring bland grey concrete jungle with no atmosphere compared to Falmouth for example. Just my opinion! Love the videos as always guys!
Hi there just found your channel ... Great content btw .. Curious as to where you hail from ,,, How did you end up in Cornwall ??
Falmouth, definitely not the most depressing!
Living in the South West on the border of Devon and Cornwall I am suprised as you are about the outcome of this survey, but then perhaps I’m not as it depends on your values and whats important to you in life. To be honest Falmouth isn’t my go to place to go, there are others I prefer like Teighnmouth and Penzance for instance. Moving down here over twenty years ago form the North of England there are some really dire places up there that make Falmouth look like a fairy tale wonderland. Bradford, Rotherham and Birmingham spring to mind. Then there is Scunthorpe. I worked there for many years, it was far more industrial then having now lost many of its steelworks. Back then it had nice tearooms, a viberant shopping centre and good nightlife. Now we have a no go area, demolished and boarded up shops and offices. No, this rating of Falmouth says more about those who wrote it then it does about Falmouth.
Never been to Penzance but it amazed me with the LACK of boarded up shops. Plenty of Grafitti, but that's everywhere thanks to today's youth. It looked like a great little seaside town.
Falmouth? No way! We love Falmouth, we’ve had so many good times and share very special memories with our friends. I could name at least 10 sea side towns outside Cornwall that are far worse than Falmouth
I've stayed at Falmouth many times over the past 30 years and the only drawback to it is the steep hills and pathways which is not so good for elderly and disabled people. Lots of boat trips and many beautiful walks to take. Good public transport with ferries, buses and trains. What's not to like?
Hi beautiful lady, I live in Edinburgh and planning to visit Cornwall this summer, drive all day with breaks as and when needed, and as you know our visit is at the mercy of the weather! Is early September a good time warm and dry enough to visit the best beaches in Cornwall? thanks in advance. Fidel
We live in Cheshire. But always visit Falmouth. Think it's lovely. 😊
We have just yesterday returned from a weeks stay in Falmouth and found it to be a great place to stay, we have become very familiar with Andrew's favourite figurehead down Upton's slip as we had to go through the upturned boat next to it to get to access our holiday accommodation, there is lots to see and do, lovely beaches, plenty of shops, it's very vibrant and well placed to visit the beautiful Lizard peninsula and the best Pasties and chocolate Brownies you can buy in Cornwall at Gear farm you must try them ( but check out the opening times first and you can phone through your order ), i really don't see how they voted this the worst place to live, i would gladly trade my dismal depressing midlands home city for Falmouth any day if i could.
The thing I always remember about Falmouth was, everything was splattered with seagull shit! Nice pint in the Legion Club though !!
We live in Medway (Kent), of which Chatham (20) is a part. Having been to Falmouth many times, we’d much rather be there than Chatham. Hope to be living in Cornwall before the end of the year.
How can this be so depressing Sarah & Andrew are in town to cheer it up 😂 How dare someone mentions that Devon town while at Falmouth Trago 😂
Falmouth is lovely!! We always visit the meat counter!. I also agree that Swindon should have been top 3 minium! It's dreadful!!
What kind of cameras do you use?
Love Falmouth as a holiday place.I guess for young people living there it may be different.
Lack of jobs and housing etc but the whole country is going that way now.❤
Falmouth is not my favourite place in Cornwall but it doesn't deserve this ,the sea side part is lovely.
As seasides go Blackpool and Newquay are the worst .
There are a lot of towns in Cornwall Penzance, St Austell ,Looe I could go on.
It will definitely not stop us coming on holiday later in the year.
Falmouth is also the hometown of my fave UK band, Holiday Ghosts
It looks like a great place to me lots of atmosphere
Wow. It look like a vibrant bustling town. They should be questioned and made to print a retraction.
I holidayed near falmouth earlier this year went in I think 3 times,I thought it was fine.
Good video showing how ludicrous the survey is.
How can Falmouth even be on this list, there is nothing unusual about it. There are some truly bleak places upcountry that i'll personally never set foot in again
personally i Think Falmouth is a nice place, great video as always guy's, take care both.
Great video as always👍😊Absolutely no way Falmouth should be in that list of 20 worst places in the UK.Some of these surveys are ridiculous l agree with some of the places in that list of 20 but Falmouth no way.
What cameras do you use?
They clearly haven’t visited Southend on Sea. Now that place is a dump! Oh, and the whole of Thurrock in Essex. That place is a hell hole! I’ve lived in both unfortunately, so I speak from experience!
Living in North Essex now, in a small village, and we love it❤️🇬🇧
I was surprised that Falmouth was on the list. The town where I currently live was number 12 on that list, Croydon. Yes it should be on the list, but like most towns it has it's good bits and some bad bits.
To be honest no matter where you go nowadays there are always places in a town that let it down.it’s just a matter of a opinion.
As a knitter, I know that every town should have a wool shop! One that sells WOOL not fake wool. There's a very good one in Falmouth, they have a very enjoyable podcast here on TH-cam too.❤
So my wife tells me.
At Oyster fest' drink 'penny come quick' tis very good for de liver,
As you quath, your depression falls off,
and it floats off down the river...
I grew up in the Camborne-Pool-Redruth triangle in the mid-80's, Falmouth was considered posh. I definitely don't agree with this poll, I now live in Nottinghamshire and as a former mining area....it is full of fairly depressed and struggling places.
There are hundreds of small towns in the UK that are REALLY depressing . Anyone ever been to Sutton in Ashfield in the midlands ??? !! lol !!
Wow if Falmouth is the worst, the rest of us don't stand a chance😂. We love it.
But ,Andrew, mentioning Camborne before Redruth in this measure, you can go off people you know 😂😂😂😂.
Even though I've lived here all my life you always find something I've never seen or heard of. Huge thank you for all the hard work that goes into making your great video's.
Would love to see more of Sarah painting ...
I don't know who compiled that list. I agree with you about Falmouth. Wells is a pretty little city, not at all what the creator of that horrible list said! How many other communities have they insulted?
Looks better than St Austell when I was there a couple of years ago.....Cod and Chips at The Fisher Man's Chippy at Mevagissey....And I am half a world away in outback Australia
I was a Art student in Falmouth in 2000 and it was great then. They built the University off the back of its reputation. Now it is a bland, homogeneous, soulless place full of rich students not studying creative subjects. It’s way too expensive. It’s London prices on the rent. Council tax is extortionate because of the 40’000 students. It’s lost it’s eccentric raggedy edges and has become bourgeois and trendy. Happened to Brixton, happens anywhere something new and creative happens.
Totally agree, well put
There must be a different Falmouth in the UK, because that description doesn't match Falmouth, Cornwall at all.
Yes. Someone got a parking fine there. Or got cold coffee, now the place is rubbish. I lived in Cornwall and visit there often. I love the Oyster 🦪 festival. Especially with a nice glass of wine 🍷
That's because you're one of them. @@scottredrup4434
Interesting video. We visit Falmouth quite often and love it. But we’re looking at it through tourist eyes; maybe for the general population it isn’t so good. Independent shops and high end fashion stores are no good to people trying to feed and clothe their families on a tight budget. It will be a problem for most picturesque seaside towns I imagine, the locals get pushed out of their area to make room for the monied class. That is depressing.
When talking about transport links, you didn't mention the Mussle card....hop on/travel on local buses, trains and ferries. Brilliant scheme.
I visited Falmouth in March and thought it was a lovely town and considered it vibrant, interesting and attractive. Great galleries, eating, views and quirkiness. There is no way it should be on the list. I agree, it is total rubbish! Great vlog though and a well deserved big up for Falmouth!!
I cannot believe that Falmouth would be on any list of this nature and definitely not at number one. I have had exhibitions there and it always seems lively and thriving with most shops taken and open when I last went there (although that was a few years back now). Surely it has not gone down that quickly.
Some areas look depressing, but the survey would cover the worst of the worst I imagine, I believe many towns and villages have lost their atmosphere over a period of time, but what do I know not being able to visit anymore due to major disability, personally I thought the ships figurehead looked the most dejected, maybe with a bit of community service things would improve, and bring some pride back into our lives :) Interesting subject with plenty of puns from Andrew, thanks 🙏 again 🤗
Absolutely love Falmouth.❤
