    Great video. Review videos like this are the best. I watched so many since the G7X Mark ii came out. Until I finally I decided to go ahead and get it for my daily vlogging needs. I’m happy with it. Love the bright colors but the sound could be a little better in noisy environments. Thanks for this video!

    Hello Marteen! I have the Canon PowerShot G7X Mark 2 camera, and while I am zooming with the lens ring, it's very slow, and if I do zoom quickly, it can't zoom, and while I'm rotating the lens ring, sometimes it get stuck, if i don't do that slowly. Is it normal or is it a factory defect?

    • @edertables
      @edertables 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not the lens ring get stuck, only the zoom stops

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not normal, sounds like you need to take it in for exchange or repair.

    • @edertables
      @edertables 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's working fine for me, but It's only unusual. if I zoom with the lens ring, it's not the same as with the Sony A5100 (for example).
      It has got a little delay, and if I zoom and suddenly zoom back, sometimes it's not zooming.
      And when recording a video, the zoom is very slow. (I rotate the lens ring quickly, but the zoom is slow.)
      Are you sure it's not normal? So you mean when I'm recording, the zoom must be as quick as I'm rotating the lens ring, as the Sony A5100?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's a little lag, but what you seem to be describing is unusual.

    • @edertables
      @edertables 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @MaartenHeilbron

      That probably depends on the price in your neighbourhood, and what you want to shoot. Or whether you want a viewfinder. Both are great cameras.

    Fantastic review, Maarten ! I just purchased this camera yesterday and luckily found this video... you have pointed out some very interesting and important features.
    Which mode(s) would you suggest that I shoot sunsets with (stills and video) for the most enhancement but also look natural ?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the kind words, I do appreciate them. The AUTO mode should detect orange hues in the sky and automatically detect a sunset (icon in the upper left) - which is likely the preferred in-camera effect.
      If you're shooing in other modes, I think that setting Picture Style to Auto is likely your best bet. I would save images in both RAW and JPEG, so that if I'm not happy with the JPEG, I'd work with the image in Lightroom to make adjustments to the image to obtain the effect I wanted. Hope this helps.

    Great Video!!! Between this camera and the Sony Rx100III, what do you prefer? So I see Sony has nothing to envy this new product from Canon. Greetings from Venezuela.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the kind words - both are nice, depending on specific features I could be happy with either. Canon's feature set is full of interesting capabilities if you're willing to take the time to learn and practice using them. I have a small instinctive preference for the viewfinder on the Sony, but I do find I don't use it as much as I think I would on a small camera.

    I bought mine online not realizing that it didn't have an ext mic input jack until it arrived & I couldn't be bothered shipping it back for a refund. A bit of a disappointment as I like to use a Lav Mic for vlogging. I do have an audio recorder that I can use though. Apart from that downside it's a great little camera.

    Would you prefer this one or the Panasonic Lx 10? 4K is not a must and the price of them do not vary much in my place. Which one is better in terms of image quality, auto focus and color? Thank you so much!

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Although you may have a preference depending on your appreciation of the two camera's in camera JPEG processing, as they use similar (if not identical) sensors, the quality is about the same. I think that Panasonic's autofocus is more flexible - but the speed difference is minor. Either is a good choice, both offer an interesting set of advanced features which, if you intend to use them, might make your decision. Otherwise, as I typically suggest, let your wallet, your hand and your heart decide.

    Great review!! I’m deciding between this and Panasonic (eg lx100 or lx10 etc). One thing I use quite frequently on my current Panasonic point and shoot is the ability to take a photo DURING filming a video, as well as extracting a frame/image when playing back a video clip, in camera. (Not referring to Panasonic’s 4K photo modes that’s yet another set of useful features too). I can’t seem to find either of these two features on the Canon? Canons ND filter and Stabilisation appear to be very good here though:)

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is not a common feature - the issue being that the best shutter speed for video (1/60) rarely yields good photos. Check out Sony's RX 100 series, which also includes this capability (they call it dual record).

    Hi Maarten, thanks so much for the in-depth review! How do you rate the image quality on this camera? I'm sold on the video and zoom range but question the sensor size. I'm looking for a decent balance of video quality and photo quality with manual control, something that makes having a camera in addition to an iphone worthwhile. I've worked with APS sensors (fantastic IQ for stills but too big or too expensive) and micro four-thirds (okay IQ but desired lenses get too bulky and are beyond my price range).

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If image quality is your concern, and you're used to APS-C, you will find the one-inch sensor to be a compromise. That said, I've taken many great photos with one inch sensors, that hold up well even with enlargement to wall size.

      I can recommend the Zoom H2N - bhpho.to/2lShtJT It's about as compact as a high quality recorder gets, and has a line input for recording from a console. Yes, I do own one.

    I was looking for a good but compact travel vlogging camera when I stumbled upon the first G7X. However, when the mark II came out with improved features and whatnot, I got more interested in it. I've been using my phone (Nexus 5 and recently Nexus 5X) for my videos and pictures and, while the quality is great and all, it's taking up a lot of space on my phone and I'd much prefer having a digital camera anyway.
    I was wanting to know if you think this would be a good camera for mainly videos of scenery and vlogs, with the occasional photo. If you think that another camera would be better or just as good, let me know because I'm open to suggestions!

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The G7X II is as good as any and better than most. If you're interested in waiting, the Nikon DL series cameras may appeal, if not, consider the Panasonic LX100 (th-cam.com/video/_Lhsrc9oG5U/w-d-xo.html) or the Sony RX100IV (th-cam.com/video/Cp3OGF-Pho4/w-d-xo.html) or RX100V (review in progress). They have slightly different features, but all are equally capable.
      However, if you really want to vlog, and be on camera while you shoot, the search for the ideal mirrorless camera with mic in, good wide angle, flip screen - remains elusive, unless you're prepared to lug the Canon 5Ti DSLR around.

    Thank you for your comprehensive reviews! I'm currently looking around for a new camera - stuck between Canon G7X II, Sony RX100 III, and Fujifilm X70 - and was hoping you could help me. I am a beginner who's really interested to learn, so I would like the option for manual controls - hence the three cameras. I will be using it while traveling (taking pictures of landscapes, architecture, and of friends and family). I'd like for it to have good fast motion capture capability, decent low light pictures and good quality images even in full auto mode. Image quality is more important for me than the video quality. Which do you think is the best choice? Other camera suggestions are welcomed too :D

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All three are good choices - so I generally advise that one should choose with the wallet (price), the hand (how it feels) and the heart - which one is most appealing to you on abstract terms like brand, design and pride of ownership. No good owning a camera everyone else thinks is great if you're not in love with it.
      If you are interested in learning and improving your technical photography skills, the Fuji models make access to the basic exposure controls more clear and direct, so that would be my preference.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Unless you're planning to do wildlife or sports photography (where you'll need a longer lens that the G7X offers), I think you'll find the prime lens to be plenty versatile - as many photographers prior to the invention of the zoom lens in the previous millennium did. "Zoom with your feet."

    I'm really struggling deciding between this camera, one of the Sony RX100, or the Canon Powershot G9X. Do you know how much of an improvement you get in picture quality between the G9X and G7X II? I'm trying to decide if it's worth the extra size and weight for someone who is just going to put it in auto for vacation pictures

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have not reviewed the G9X, so can't comment - check dpreview or cnet. Under those circumstances, I would primarily consider sensor size as the determining quality factor (although the lens will play a role also). These three all use the same nominal "one-inch" sensor, so likely not much difference.

    Hello sir! I need help choosing a cam for traveling and sometimes family occasions. My first choice is canon g7x ii bec it's a light weight camera. However i stumbled upon Sony ILCE5100 which comes with two lenses (SELP1650 and SEL 55-210) and here in our country they're almost the same price. I want to take good pictures and videos as well. I'm really thinking on where to put my money bec these cams are expensive and i'm probably gonna use it for years. And btw should i be concern that Sony ILCE5100 is an older model? And is there an alternative cams that you can recommend?How about fujifilm xa3? Thank you and i'm happy that I saw your reviews! Subbed!!!

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would recommend the Sony A6000 over the A5100 - it's certainly worth the small extra cost. But the G7X is nice and small, and really travels easily. Granted the sensor is small, but I have not found that to be an issue. If you just want a "point and shoot" style camera - the G7X has that covered, with some features that elevate it out of that class.

      Oh, I see ... I got confused by the previous sentence. I would choose the setting that captures the most information - which you can usually see by the number of images the camera can save in that mode. (In this case, smaller is better - p220 in the manual). For the G7Xm2, it's L with the smooth curve. Use the sensors native aspect ratio 3:2, again to capture the most information.

    I usually shoot Raw with my APSC mirrorless camera, but I want to shoot Jpegs with this Canon since I heard that the Jpeg engine has been improved. I heard that the default sharpness is extreme and to bring it down a notch in the color settings. Did you find that to be true? Also, I heard that the noise reduction should be kept low. All of the settings that affect JPEGs (like sharpness, nr, etc.) are personal preference. What seems extreme to some is preferred by others. I recommend you adjust the settings based on your preferences. Of course, if you shoot RAW+JPEG, you'll still have the option to adjust at your PC.

    Great review, as per usual! Any idea what the Attentuator setting does?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I appreciate your kind words, and I do know what the attenuator setting does. It's alternatley called a limiter or compressor and it will limit loud sounds so that they don't overload the input and distort the recording.
      What may happen is that in a quiet environment with an occasional loud sound, the limiter will lower the overall level to accommodate the loud sound - and then the background sound level will audibly creep back up. Although you'll usually want to leave it on, if that's happening, turn it off.
      Hope this helps.

I constantly accidently push the drive mode button (maybe while pressing the Q Set button), and ended taking pictures with this future that is unecesarry if you only want to take one shot at a time. Can you tell me please is there is a way to lock this future? b) In the presets modes I noticed that lacks a landscape mode, is there a way to have a preset for this type of situation?. Thanks for all!

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are two ways to access continuous shooting - in auto if you hold the shutter down it will continue to fire. Or select continuous from the top of the control ring. As well there are some scene modes that automatically trigger continuous mode. Other than setting the burst speed, I don't see any controls, nor any way to lock out the control dial from accidentally changing settings - but I agree, with a small control area, it's nearly inevitable that something gets jostled and you wind up with a setting you didn't intend.
      For landscape, there's no auto colour mode but you can use a mode like vivid to punch up the colours for landscapes. Or create your own using the custom colour settings.
      Hope this helps.

    Hi Maarten.
    Great channel and great review of this camera. Nice to see all the little extra features you've highlighted.
    I'm trying to decide on a compact travel camera for an upcoming European cycling vacation. I think I've got it narrowed down to the G7X MII or the Panasonic ZS100. I've shot Canon almost all my life (all the way back to the A1), and currently have 3 (plus 1 I'm trying to sell) so I think I know my way around them pretty well.
    The longer reach of the ZS100 is appealing, along with some of the features tied into the 4K (i.e. post focus) but it's a slower lens, and, from what I've read, perhaps a little soft compared to the Canon. I wish the G7X had an EVF, although if I had to choose, I'd probably take the G7X's tilt screen over Panasonic's EVF.
    Do you have any experience with the ZS100 that you could offer to help me make a more informed decision?
    Thanks.

    Great video and do you know how to pause the g7x when recording

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the kind words. There is no pause during video recording. What would be difference between stop/start and pause?

    • @bigbandz9619

    Thanks for the good review . I’m looking for something between my old Canon ELPH 520hs , which underperforms in low light , and my Nikon DSLR. It must be small for camping and riding. This Canon looks good however it seems to put high priority on the video , and to be aimed at Vloggers in particular.
    I seldom if ever even use video so now I think there is a better camera that fits the siZe and price of this Canon yet puts higher priority on still images and other features such including a hot shoe and USB recharge.
    What do you think ? Perhaps this Canon is the only one that fits my requirements ? Thanks much !

      I appreciate the kind words, thanks. I'd consider the Fuji X-T20 th-cam.com/video/seokdJwXjTs/w-d-xo.html as an alternate. It's a little bigger, but it has an APS-C sensor - and offers interchangeable lenses. In my opinion Fuji's entry level lenses are better than average. As for video, although both are video-capable, Canon (with HD only) and Fuji (limited record time) they really would not be anyone's choice.
      If size is the issue, the Sony RX100 series: th-cam.com/video/GcNa_eFTzkk/w-d-xo.html is similar - and is even more limited for video.

      thanks very much Maarten. I hadn't thought of the the Fuji entry level series and will check them out at the local camera store. Living in Japan does offer me better prices than I would have seen in Canada so the X-T20 may well be within my budget here. Cheers.

      Well you did it Maarten. I went out and ordered the G7x yesterday. I think its a perfect happy medium for a place between my tiny ELPH520 and Nikon DSLR. Thanks again for the correspondence on this, and the very useful and accessible review.

    Great review, I enjoyed it except for the end where, for a while, the camera preferred to focus on the tree instead. I need assistance though.
    I'm torn between the RX100, LX100, and this. I'm a casual photographer and I want to upgrade my camera (...my smartphone), and so I have limited budget but I can still buy either three. I will mostly shoot photos indoors more than outdoors, but I will be recording videos a lot outdoors and occasionally "vlogging" indoors. I mostly value an articulating screen, and I don't find the absence of an EVF troubling. Is the RX100/LX100 worth paying over the G7X II, or is the G7X II _enough_?

      @MaartenHeilbron  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The G7X is enough, although the flash is of limited range for interiors, it does bounce up for a nicer look. Perfect for vlogging, but indoors make sure you have sufficient lighting.

      ***** Ah, if I were to take low-light photos will it fare well? I won't be hit too hard when it comes to video lighting because I won't do much in the dark anyways, but it'd still be nice if it takes decent/usable photos in low light. Thanks for your response!

      This wouldn't be my first choice for low light - with the same one-inch sensor and form factor, my preference would be the Sony RX100m3/4. I found the Canon (as you see in some of the images) gets a little grainy/noisy in low light. Video is about the same in low light - but check out the details on dpreview, who does more in-depth than I can.

    Hi, I have just purchased a Canon G7X Mk II and would like to know if it's possible to change the aperture, shutter speed and ISO during recording without first touching the touchscreen?
    I would simply like to change the aperture by turning the Control Dial (as you are able to do before hitting the record button). The only way I can see to change aperture during recording is by first touching the screen and then turning the dial.
    Many thanks for any ideas,
    Dave

      With apologies for the tardy response (your question was caught in TH-cam's spam filter) I no longer have the G7X II here to check - and neither the manual or my notes shed any light on your question.

    Can I use this as a TH-cam camera, as in videoing myself to create my content? How good is it?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For vlogging, most prefer a screen that swivels out to the side to see yourself while you're shooting. As for how good it is, hopefully I addressed that in the video.

      @@MaartenHeilbron would you say it's better than the Huawei p30 Pro? For some reason it just djesmt look good when I finish with it, front or rear camera. If you check my recent videos on my channel, could you possibly compare the quality? I'd really appreciate it
