COP28: King Charles says dangers of climate change are no longer distant risks | BBC News

  • King Charles III has urged world leaders gathered in Dubai to make the COP28 climate summit a "turning point".
In a speech on the second day of the conference, the monarch warned that despite some progress "we remain so dreadfully far off track".
He called for "genuine transformational action", a day after the meeting opened with stark warnings on global warming.
The King said he has spent “a large proportion of my life trying to warn of the existential threats facing us over global warming, climate change and biodiversity loss”.
He said that despite this, decades later there is 30% more CO2 in the atmosphere now than back then, and almost more than 40% more methane.

Extinction rates (1500-2009) peaked around 1900 at 50 per decade. Extinction rates have declined dramatically to around 4 to per decade in the 2000s. So the extinction rate is very low: 900 known lost species for 2.1 million known species in 500 years (IUCN), so from observations there are an average of slightly less than 2 species lost every year. Out of a known species total of over 2 million. That gives an annual percentage loss of less than 0.0001%. That's background extinction. At that frequency it will take over 930,000 years to reach 80% extinction of species experienced at the K-T boundary that saw the extinction of the dinosaurs. Of course, extinction is a natural part of the evolution of life on this planet with the average lifespan of a species thought to be about 1 million years (cf 930,000). It is estimated that 99.9% of all plant and animal species that have existed have gone extinct. It should also be noted that no families or genera have become extinct in the last 500 years. In fact marine diversity at the taxonomic level of families is the highest it has ever been in the Earth's long history (see Sepkoski Curve). In a review of 16,009 species, most populations (85%) did not show significant trends in abundance, and those that did were balanced between winners (8%) and losers (7%) (Dornelas et al, 2019). There have been only 9 species of continental birds and mammals confirmed extinct since 1500 (Loehle, 2011). No global marine animals have become extinct in the past 50 years (McCauley et, 2015 using IUCN data).
    There is no climate crisis.

Just think if this man campaigned for honest labeling on foods we could all choose if we wish to buy meat raised in Britain or failing that the nearest suppliers to save on transportation pollution. If we are not given this information how can we shop responsibly. Also how about campaigning for ready meals containing products such as mash potatoes and preformed chips which have had the potato starch removed for its usefulness in forming other meat products to make those apparently oh so nice so called deli slice thinner than a piece of paper. Start there Mr. Windsor with honest food labelling. Stop the rise in Value extended products especially those which contain cellulose/added gluten/potato starch etc.
Make children's menus in restaurants etc. contain real foods and not low grade mechanically recovered products. Children deserve a better start in life than this chemically and mechanically manipulated food.
Cleaning emissions and making use of wool and other natural fibres would be a better use of money. Plastic clothing is cheap but it sure ain't healthy.
The planet is not at risk, it will be here long after it gets rid of us as a scourge, it is us at risk and the science community have destroyed the food chain right round the world. The science community needs to be reigned in and made to work on improving our food production methods and not for the profits of Big Pharma.
And for goodness sake Mr. Windsor a Zero Carbon future would be the death of us all as the planet would not be able to support life.

      @qunngiaqti 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

I totally agree we should all do our part, But of course we all like to talk about, it but none like to actually check out these things for themselves and then act accordingly. One visit to my local authority land infill/re-cycling plant on their open day was very informative not for what was said but more for what was not said, the actual layout and signs used for vehicles appeared to have their own story to tell. It was a very interesting couple of hours well spent.
I find it interesting that you think that complaining to the Min of Ag would be correct, or an effect way to go to try and get waste products getting in preformed and mechanically recovered foods removed. This is the dept which is actively promoting the use of extended value products in general and the modern more they tell you labelling the more vague is the actual labelling of food. That wonderful use of cellulose in foods, which due to the properties of dehydration is always listed on the labelling at its dry weight and appears to be only a small part of the contents, where as once you rehydrate it to its normal moist state it is the no 1 ingredient. Needless to say they never state what the cellulose or it's origins are.
It is the min of ag that supervises and allows the majority of imported meat to be sold under the false labeling of British meat. Encourages fish farming which is one of the most horrendous industries ever invented.
All this and more to avoid farming in a sustainable way in keeping with nature, We build cars but do not include air cleaning filters in the design of the cars to clean the air as the car is being driven. Why would we after all we buy cars for speed and looks and not the ability to clean up the air they are polluting.
We know we need to clean up after ourselves but currently it is the same people who are responsible for the dirty air who also control the use and applications of the laws.
So who does that leave? Who is above such matters and can be considered anything like neutral enough to have a real impact on modern day pollution rackets and believe you me much of it is a racket with lots of grants and others monies available to those who wish to manipulate the system.
Throwing money at these industries will not solve the problems of pollution. It is a moral issue and can only start to get somewhere when we start to consider it a moral problem. Companies which used public water need to be obligated to return clean water back into the system after they have cleaned it up. A pulp mill which does not clean up the water it uses is just abusing lax laws which allow it to just pour it waste into the waterways and left to the tax payer to pay the costs of a cleanup after a disaster or whatever which is about the only time clean ups really seem to happen.
Meanwhile the increase in polluted foods is ever growing and humans from the poorer communities pay the price, the rise in coeliac disease which is almost at plague levels, auto immune diseases and other areas which are very very related to the modern food productions methods. In effect we are using poor people and the undereducated who are easy to influence through advertising as recycling plants. The lungs of pedestrians which currently are the only ongoing air cleaning filters of the the air in many major towns and cities.
There is more to the pollution problems than plastic and fossil fuels - first we need to work out what pollution is - And I ain't never seen a good all encompassing definition of what constitutes modern day pollution. Until we can work out the difference between pollution and by products we are on a none starter,
