I found this book so impactful and well executed. I had to be a “jenny” in High School for a similar situation, so although I have not experienced a situation like Vanessa’s - there were moments that made my stomach pang thinking about my own past.
I agree some of the explicit scenes were very intense and could have been toned down. However, I also think those scenes really drive home the depravity in moments where Vanessa is romanticizing the situation to cope with the trauma.
Abby - what a thoughtful response to this. And I am glad that you shared this as it made me think more deeply about her process. I have been tempted to re-read this one day soon as it has always stuck with me.

I've just finished this book too... yes it IS a difficult read. And it took me a while to decide exactly what I think of it.
You have to decide for yourself why the perpetrator commited the abuse that he did. And also.... why the victim allowed it to happen.
Anf the answers you may arrive at may make you very uncomfortable indeed...
I know this will not be a good fit for me. I appreciate the detailed review you’ve given the book.
