As a big fan of black metal, and understanding the falsehoods of the book the movies based on and the falsehoods of the movie itself, it was largely an entertaining film. If I was watching a documentary, maybe then I’d be salty about the inaccuracies. Only thing I hated was the lack of Dead, like you said, gone in less than 30 minutes is a pretty sorry state.
I am glad I found a comment like yours. If you guys are wanting a documentary go watch one instead, go see Until The Light Takes Us. It was in fact an entertaining film for me. And I do agree about the lack of Dead, I wish we could see more of his relationship with Euronymous (like the one where he sleeps on the woods because he doesn't like Euronymous' music taste).
the lack of Dead? at least he’s in it! they completely omit Messiah & Maniac and the entire Deathcrush era. the first 4 years of the band is summed up in a 12 second montage. blink and you’ll miss Manheim.
Mayhem is a story of corruption. Euronymous wanted to create something special, something that he wanted to keep underground, and feared. He tore apart the very thing he tried so hard to create. He pushed his friends into doing things that would end up destroying him. This is not a story of comedy, this not a story about love, this isn't a story with a happy ending. It's a story of young kids killing themselves, killing others, and committing acts of arson. It's a tragedy. It should be treated as such.
Lmfao "he wanted to create something special"? He created the notoriety of mayhem and basically the second wave of Norwegian Black Metal. You just discovered mayhem your comment shows. And guess what? When he died mayhem went to the grave with him. Poser

Back in the day you had to know by reputation alone, but as of now it would turn out that I had played my own little role in the history of black metal. I knew the very first black metal band to actually be in a major Hollywood production and there was one independent movie before that, done by a director that happened to also be involved in the movie that I am talking about. It was the first major Hollywood movie that was a "true crime" drama called Bully, who's lead actor Brad Renfro ended up dying young by tragic circumstances himself. I also knew the logo artist that actually did the logo for this movie, who is the same guy that famously did both Emperor and Mayhem's logo. Had I not lost touch with him a year or so before this came out I might have been involved in the process. He does reach out to other artists for help on occasion. I have been mentioned in an article or two of his going by the same screen name that I still use now. It's kinda cool knowing that I helped shape the genre we know today in some small ways. @@ReanimatorsMutilations it was a small role yes but that doesn't mean they weren't working together for hours and hours and later spoke at the pub and probably kept in touch.
I think what a lot of the musicians portrayed actually didn't like was that this movie humanized them and demystified a lot of these events, going against the "evil" image they crafted over the years. This movie is most likely not very accurate, but it portrays them as they probably were back then: a bunch of stupid teenagers and early 20-somethings doing very stupid things and taking themselves way too seriously.
It's so real in that sense. I mean, nobody can look behind peoples faces and appearances, especially in the past. But I have seen enough of the scene in my time to say that the vibe of the film really comes close to reality. That is probably the films biggest achievement. Sometimes tragic events happen because you slip on the stairs, and sometimes there is just a cocktail of youthful inexperience, lack of guidance and overblown self-aggrandizement.
This movie has one epic thing going for it: Atilla's son is portraying his father. You can't get more authentic than that. Other than that, I suppose the movie works as a brief summery for people not familiar with the early Norwegian black metal scene, though someone more familiar would be needed to fill in the blanks.
Yeah, I think as a movie it's definitely pretty good, and does what it's supposed to as a movie. Many movies about bands have their inaccuracies due to multiple factors so honestly I'm not even mad at that. And honestly, these people aren't the best people on the planet no matter what you believe. They could've done A LOT more than "paint Varg as the villain."

I don't think you should prohibit "outsiders" to watch this movie, that said fans of black metal will problably find more value out of a movie concerning this topic than other people. If you are refering to that this movie might not be that accesible to other people, keep in mind that a lot of things were watered down so maybe you have a point.
It kinda depends on what your definition of a "mainstream audience" is. It was an indie production with a pretty limited theatrical run. I don't think it was even on the radar for most moviegoers. It has less than 10,000 user ratings on IMDb (Joker has nearly 400,000 ratings). Mayhem as a band is more mainstream than the movie (in terms of popularity) lol
The one film that represented music history right, and also could get away with totally made up happenings was Almost Famous. Putting a fictional band in the scene with real contemporary bands from that era was a brilliant move. Stillwater was neither Led Zeppelin, The Eagles or any other band, but at the same time they were a little bit of a lot of different bands. The movie shows great respect for the real history, but mocks it enough to not feel like a push-over. And, it also has an amazing story tell that really gets to you. And also the best fucking track list ever!

He actually defended the memory of Euronymous, saying that the portrayal of him as a wimpy, innocent, and naive boy that cowardly begged for his life is slander; that he was actually a twisted, perverted, nefarious egomaniac that fought to the death. To be fair, most of the people that were a part of that scene back in the early 90's think the same thing... he even said that in this video. As a matter off a fact, Necrobutcher did an interview about 2 weeks ago saying that he was actually preparing to go and kill Euronymous himself when he got the news he had already been killed.
I was in my late teens when all happened and my first exposure to the scene were the Kerrang articles. Ultimately, like what the narrator said, it's a perspective. Ultimately, it's meant as entertainment and an entry-level introduction to the scene. You can't take this film too seriously, I'd put the film in same category as Braveheart or even the TV show "Vikings". It's an undertone of truth packaged in a envelope of "artistic license". I personally enjoyed the film, just like I enjoyed Vikings and Braveheart.
My take is it used a story to get across a message about Edginess and how getting into an edgelord pissing contest can go bad, more than a biopic about a band. As a film, divorced from the source material, it's better than it has any right to be, but as a film about Mayhem or Black metal as a whole, well you summed it up nicely, depends on what you think of those things how you will see it.
I was a teen/young adult in the late 90's/early 00's with a group of friends not entirely unlike this cast of characters here. We all worshiped the black metal scene from this era and did many things (outside of church burnings, though we did other things to churches). Not everyone lived through that period of our lives either. While the exact events and depictions aren't exact or always great - I do think this movie did a somewhat decent job capturing the spirit of that kind of lifestyle.
Damn im glad i saw this after i watched the movie, this would be a serious spoiler lol. Well, this is my input on the movie. I actually really enjoyed it. But i hate that the Mayhem story is twisted. Im a fan of Mayhem and i feel like the true history itself would have been good enough for a movie.
Honestly, I don't care how many liberties were taken. The story has changed so many times at this point that they even acknowledged it in the title. Although it's strange that they made a girlfriend chatacter up.. it did nothing for the story
The story hasn't changed. The facts haven't changed. It's very easy to piece together the reality of the situation from police reports and verifiable eyewitness accounts, as some excellent books and articles have done. The story only "changes" inasmuch as lazy intellects don't know how to discern properly researched and cited literature from crap.
Honestly all the women in the story had no purpose other than appeal to the male gaze or be treated badly to show how much of an asshole Varg and the others are. 🤷♀ (With the exception of Euro's little sister who's only there to establish his humanity.) The part where Varg forced the girl to remove her top was completely unnecessary, and kinda sleazy on the writers' or director's part, given the fact that this never happened and was thrown in for plot. The white supremacy, church burnings, murder, and pushing Dead to kill himself already did a good job establishing the characters' depravity because all that is true.
@@giselletorres4156 Absolutely. Anytime someone tells the story, it's always flooded with "Actually that's not how it happened". I've pretty much given up on hoping for a 100 percent accurate story. I do agree though, that scene was unnecessary, but I guess I do see the purpose for it as far as the Varg development goes
A lot of biopics add wifes/girlfriends for the main male characters. Most of the time there is an unnecessary sex scene because "Sex sells". Also I think they add them to somehow turn everything bad about the main men towards them, blame the women for it and at the end make the girls fix the boys (because, of course, it's a woman's duty to "fix" the man). Trust me, I watched "Bohemian Rapsody" (the Queen biopic) and Freddie's girlfriend, Mary, convinces him to turn back to his band boys, thus making her the ultimate heroine of the story.
After watching this movie, I realized this was just an attempt to prevent more of the grisly details to the public. Movie was entertaining but if you're a metal fan, you'll know this was just an entertainment piece. If someone wanted to actually add everything that happened, it would turn into a series of seasons.
i was SUPER skeptical of LoC after hearing all the diff reaction. i finally watched it this week. And it is actually a very good film; tightly directed, very nice cinematography and (OH MY GOD!)...humor. It's also a pretty nice depiction of young, artists on the verge of creating some pretty timeless art. It captures metal heads of the era (yeah I was there - not Norway but deep into underground metal) really well. It dares to show these young guys in everyday moments, not being "metal" or "evil". I suggest watching it as film MOSTLY based on what went down sometimes in great detail. Obviously it takes liberties here n there - its a movie after all - but I didnt feel this detracted from what is really enjoyable film. The violence is quite brutal which I was not expecting. That was pretty tough to watch ...(sorry, 'stabbing' and 'cutting' really freaks me out) and that's my only real complaint!
I definitely felt updated to new filming here. As I worked my way through several shocks, I deeply appreciated how you went about expressing the difference in movie making to real life events. I don’t think that’s generally explained often enough and making the comparison with The Doors and other movies on the semi-documentary style really helps! I was going over in my mind how much I took Sid & Nancy to be true: not much. But the excitement of how the story comes out on screen can help to lead a person into further study of the events. There are times we’re disappointed to have been misled, but other times it’s a good influence to look into the reasons behind that and get as much of the “true” story as possible.
Exactly, they were always all theatrics and tall tales. None of them will ever admit being cringy teens doing shit for attention and clout, most are still cashing in on the same bullshit made up version of the stories were they are the badasses
Fun fact, Val Kilmer played Jim Morrison in The Doors film and his son Jack is the actor playing Dead in Lords of Chaos. Didnt realize that until I'd seen the movie haha. SPent the whole time squinting my eyes and thinking "Hang on a minute, he looks familiar..."

Well I believe that the fact the movie demysticised all the big characters of BM by just having them protrayed in their normal (mostly) young adult lives, pissed off fans. It's not so much about the supposed "inacuracy" since most BM fans I know just take things musicians say for granted because they admire them so much. Varg could tell endless stories about him stabbing euronymus to death in "self-defense" and fans would still believe him. You just don't want to take those guys corpse-paint off because it takes away a big deal of the BM image.
Black metal fans needs to stop taking themselves so seriously... this movie portraits the tragic and comedic parts in the whole story. They were teenagers. No one alive really knows what happened because there’s so many different versions. I loved this portrayal and I’m a true fan of the music.

I read Lords of Chaos several times when I was younger (bought it in 98) - I’m not going to lie, it was very instrumental in getting me into Black Metal, mainly by mapping out which early BM bands to seek out. As I learned more about BM I realized how bad the book was; I got rid of it but being honest, I’ll admit how important it was to me as far as discovering BM. The movie makes the book seem like real history.
As a 40 year old adult......I can watch and enjoy it and I can listen to Black metal and enjoy it..... here is the great thing...I can research stuff myself and figure out what is closer to the truth. Im not a 12 year old whining about whats real and what isn't. I have read the books, watched the movies, read the articles, watched the documentaries.......and somewhere in all of it is the truth. So just enjoy the ride. Just watch the movie and enjoy it. I started listening to Black Metal in 98 or so. I loved it then and I love it now but I can just watch and enjoy the journey.
I feel like this movie was made to make fun of black metal and the fact that none of the portrayer's look like the real band or have Norwegian accents is just bs but overall it is watchable
Even as a black metal fan the movie was enjoyable with some funny moments, this movie only pissed off those who were involved in these events and the Varg Vikernes fanatics.
I’ve seen this movie 4+ times and I’ve become more and more appreciative of it. So people don’t like it because it’s inaccurate? What biopic is 100% accurate? There are changes to the story for dramatic effects. Also, it doesn’t matter if this movie followed the book, Until the Light Takes Us, Once Upon a Time in Norway, ect., no one will ever know what actually happened between Varg and Euronymous because no one else was there and Varg isn’t known to tell the truth. This movie really wasn’t bad because it’s actually quite an accurate depiction of what the metal scene is like and uses bits and pieces of a true story to show that.
Honestly, "The Doors" movie got me into the Doors music. I was 9, I'm now 38 and still love the Doors. I've been a Mayhem fan for almost 12 years now. When I heard about the "Lords of Chaos" film, I was skeptical. I really enjoyed it though. It had a high and low, kind of roller coaster vibe to it. I've actually read Varg's portrayal of the murder of Euronymous. That was an intense moment in my life. I can still see the orange/yellow background on Varg's website...
Morbid Apple its alright, movie wasnt that great anyways. Too many awkward moments. The stabbing of euronymous was awkward as fuck man. Hard to watch. Like second hand embarrassment
"looks like a parody"... well, it's because Black Metal WAS ALWAYS a parody! Over the years the stories have become legends and the people involved have become characters of an epic tale, but really they were a bunch of teens trying so hard to be edgy that they ended up burning churches and killing people. Nothing against the music, but we're not talking about nobel prizes here, they happened to be in the right place at the right time, but the people who celebrate them as rebels or talented musicians miss the point. Again, no offense to any Black Metal fans, not trying to shit on the genre, just the attitude.
"Varg wasn't a clumsy poser who did things to fit in with the Mayhem guys" Umm yes he fucking was xD Even his own mother said this in an interview. He looked up to Euornymous and wanted to be just like him then later realised he was all talk and no action.
lords of chaos COULD have been good. In fact, many scenes, especially those involving dead, were well done but the atrocious acting and writing made the film laughable
Okay, I’m saying it. If they changed everyone’s names, this would be considered a top tier dark comedy and satire about the Norwegian Black metal scene. Some parts of this movie, actually had cracking up.
There's not disagreement about the details. In fact the details are all very accurately recorded in both police records and cross referenced accounts. The one dissenting voice on the reality of the situation is from a madman holocaust denier who believes every batshit insane conspiracy theory going around - hardly a trustworthy source.
I recently watched this film and enjoyed it quite a lot. I understand that there are embellishments but the overall story and key plot points are accurate and that is what matters. The story of Mayhem is as interesting as it gets when it comes to bands and I'm okay with some inaccuracies as a trade off for entertainment. There is a portion of the metal community who have an elitist or purist type of view of what metal is and what metal related content should be but I whole heartedly disagree with their sentiments. This movie was made to appeal to a wider audience than just black metal fans and the elitists don't understand that concept. There are already several documentaries and books with accurate representations that they can enjoy. Lords of Chaos is for people who are interested in the story but don't really care about hardcore specifics and grueling details.

I came to the movie from the perspective of a metalhead who knew nothing about mayhem but was trying to get into black metal and heard about how it was inaccurately written, so I just watched it for the entertainment value and found I enjoyed it quite a bit.

That's strange, I can't even watch it.

Weren't Mayhem doing drugs back then? Didn't Dead Have drugs at the timing he killed himself?

I don't trust what any of those guys say. I think they all believe the hype around themselves, and do everything they can to perpetuate the myth.
Exactly, they were always all theatrics and tall tales. None of them will ever admit being cringy teens doing shit for attention and clout, most are still cashing in on the same bullshit made up version of the stories were they are the badasses
finally some common sense
Hating Everything and Everyone while living in a place that has arguably the highest standard of living in the entire world = Cringe.

Funny how those two things seem to go together
I mean....yeah.
You could say the same about Kurt Cobain or punk rock, though. And that's what the "cool" kids listen to, right?
I know the real history and the movie was still entertaining. Who cares
I agree
Slightly cringey but yeah entertaining
Johnathan Jaco fits perfectly with the black metal scene. It’s cringe entertainment for weird kids.

Haha! That’s why it was on my mind a little. A channel years ago called Dead, “Batman’s son”
Finally checked out this movie and it was really entertaining. Rory Culkin did an amazing job! I felt so bad for him at the end. Great review! It inspired me to get this movie :)
at least varg is wearing an old funeral shirt, that’s one thing they got right
This video is everything I hoped it would be. Insightful, intelligent, entertaining and well-edited. You're a talented guy.
Fenriz knows *all*
It really feels like a movie just meant to make varg look like a poser and a villain
Half true. But really they weren't goofy like this i think they still maintained thier ground on being serious from both sides but I wasn't thier so who really knows its like Manson and the girl's Hollywood really portrayed false story and all with helterskelter Manson laughed at the beatles he didn't even like the Beatles and was older then the Beatles
Never believe the media and Hollywood
@@astarothdashaalisacccbriga7726 they were very goofy. Private videos shows just how fun they seemed to have.
I liked it. Who gives a crap if the current mayhem members didnt like it. Those guys dont like anything.
Or conversely: who gives a fuck if you liked it?
I don't like Mayhem but this movie...dude...this is humiliating
New Mayhem sucks. Dead's personality and vocals with Euronymous' attitude and skills are what defined Mayhem and black metal as a whole
The movie is shit and cringey as fuck. Thats all.
Even as a black metal fan the movie was enjoyable with some funny moments, this movie only pissed off those who were involved in these events and the Varg Vikernes fanatics.
This is probably the most mature and reasonable review of the film.
This movie really wasn’t bad because it’s actually quite an accurate depiction of what the metal scene is like and uses bits and pieces of a true story to show that.
the problem wasnt the inaccuracy, its the horrible acting and dialogue that really makes one cringe
TheMadMattster have you even been around the black metal scene? It really is kind of a circus.
When you can't even get the real people's nationalities right, man...
the "meanwhile, Faust from emperor wonders what it is like killing a person" had me laughing my ass off
Honestly, "The Doors" movie got me into the Doors music.
The worst about this movie is that Snorre Ruch (Blackthorn) from Thorns is just described as "Varg's driver".
sad because Snorre Ruch wrote some of Mayhem's best riffs
I want a shirt of "O' Boy" chocolate milk. Hahaha
Alright you are just straight up spoiling us killbot.
Morbid Apple its alright, movie wasnt that great anyways. Too many awkward moments. The stabbing of euronymous was awkward as fuck man. Hard to watch. Like second hand embarrassment
@@Appathetic_Substance_Abuse
I don't know WTF they were thinking.
It seems like you are actually talking about KISS.
All churches should burn
“HAIL SATAN!”
Dead: *angered grunt*
I’m sorry but that shit made me laugh so hard
"Varg wasn't a clumsy poser who did things to fit in with the Mayhem guys"
Umm yes he fucking was xD Even his own mother said this in an interview. He looked up to Euornymous and wanted to be just like him then later realised he was all talk and no action.

*Varg mentions posers drinking beer*
*Euroynmous puts beer down*
lords of chaos COULD have been good. In fact, many scenes, especially those involving dead, were well done but the atrocious acting and writing made the film laughable
It was somewhere between Michael Bey and Saturday morning cartoon.
6:02 "He brags to Varg and Euronomous I did it".
Next movie audio clip "I did it" ... I don't know why I think that edit is funny.
After I watched it, I must say that even it isn't accurate, it is still a good movie.
something about it just feels so fake and forced
Hmm, didn't notice the minor errors at all, but whatever, another excuse to watch it again.
"minor" you're kidding right?
alright buddy
Just a reminder: Lords of Character Murder.
Pretty good video, though. Grind on, Killbot.
Personally I think they should do a movie on the rise of thrash metal
it would literally be 3 hours of people with bad hair vomiting on acid washed jeans and High Top sneakers.
@@ambassadortourettes753 Entertaining enough!
Okay, I’m saying it.
If they changed everyone’s names, this would be considered a top tier dark comedy and satire about the Norwegian Black metal scene. Some parts of this movie, actually had cracking up.
Actually, didn't Morgan from Marduk confirm eventually that he possessed bits of Dead's skull?
He was talking about the film.
Excellent review and breakdown. The errors and embellishments are forgivable considering that there is so much disagreement about the details.

While it may not be accurate, it does say that it contains lies at the beginning, and after all, it's a movie, not a documentary. One note: I am aware that the movie is edgy and corny/ over the top at times but idrc I still like it.
