Horrible but it was also horrible of him to let his (what he probably thought was his friend) to walk into that horrific scene. I guess it uno reversed on him and ended up giving this gruesome scene to a psycho.
no for real ... after being in the scene for a while im finally taking the time to learn about this and when he said about the album cover i felt SO disgusted and disturbed. like theres no justifying it. extremely sad what happened to him
I had a couple of guys renting out my basement for years. They were heavy into black metal. I lovingly referred to them as my basement trolls. Best housemates I've ever had. They decided one day that they were going to teach me about black metal (It failed horribly) so it became a running joke in the house that they would just pop into whatever room I was in and yell "Who killed Mayhem??" and I would immediately reply with "Burzum killed Mayhem" because that is the only thing I could remember from that one day. I miss those guys. Nothing like walking into your kitchen at 9am to find a guy in corpse paint, wearing the usual metal attire but with the addition of a cute flower covered apron doing your dishes lol
Im same age as them and deep in this culture musically and never had violent friends, actually more respectful and helpful compared to disco or glam rock guys.
I feel bad for Dead, Hellhammer, and Necrobutcher. Sounds like they just wanted to have fun, be different, & make music, even if they were angsty/edgy kids. Poor Dead…he needed real help & suffered in silence. The 80s-90s were a rough time to have mental health struggles.
I’d argue that the current time is fairly rough to have mental health problems. These kids are being abused by big pharma. 80’s and 90’s they were at least ignored.
@@norabora624no need to feel bad about any of them except maybe Dead. The others did this shit to themselves but Dead actually was going through shit. I don’t think he was depressed or anything I think he just genuinely felt like he was supposed to be dead
The only person I really feel sorry for is poor Dead. What the poor kid needed was help and instead he's infamous because of the spectacle made of his death.
@@nyakiamo476 It was the '60s and the stigma against depression was *heavy* - not to mention the dude almost got killed due to a bully fracturing his spleen and that sent him over the edge (as well as in a pharmacological coma for a while). He was SURE he was already dead but the dude never actually hurt a fly.
im sorry but that guy abused animals and from what ive read, wasn’t a very pleasant person to be around at all. yes he was mentally ill but mental illness isn’t really an excuse for that, he also most likely influenced Euronymous into having that same kind of mentality given that he was described as being a fairly normal person prior to living with Dead
this case is so ignorantly covered in general and rife with incorrect information, and I love coffee house crime but I figured he'd incorrectly cover it as well but i was somewhat pleasantly surprised that he did include some usually uncovered information, but varg did not burn down churches because of Satanism, satanic beliefs had absolutely nothing to do with it,varg felt Christianity blatantly destroyed Norwegian pagan cultures and the original religions of Norway so he burned down the churches because the churches and early Christians desecrated early Norwegian holy sites and burial sites...absolutely nothing to do with Satan and varg was not a Satanist,on top of that I think people should watch re-uploads of vargs channels upload about the early black metal scene and his relationship with euronymous theres alot more to it than what people say, varg is not a fucking neo nazi I think people really ignorantly portray him,he's opinionated as hell and has very old fashioned traditional values but he's not a nazi and euronymous was an absolute piece of garbage and this is not me being a fan boy because I like burzum and mayhem equally they were both incredible bands, but anyone who takes pictures of his dead friends suicide for kicks is a grotesque human being, also to correct one point you made...euronymous didnt make those pictures his album cover, dawn of the black hearts was a Brazilian mayhem bootleg album and people in the scene got ahold of the photographs and used it as the album cover it was directly euronymous himself

The photo of Dead’s body was not used by Euronymous, it was used by someone else to make the bootleg live album “The Dawn of the Black Hearts” and that Bootleg would eventually get an official release with higher quality audio and unreleased live footage dvd under the name “Live In Sarpsborg” with Necrobutcher on the cover. The band has already said that they REALLY hate that photo(s) and Necrobutcher said in an interview that he was planning to kill Euronymous himself because of it.
used or not, he took that photo, and obviously shared it around. How did this random bootlegger get it? This was mostly before internet. Euronymous probably printed it off like he would flyers for shows..
The murder in Lillehammer mentioned here was actually committed by Faust who was another member in the scene from the band Emperor. He admitted to it and served time in prison as well for the murder.
More "fun" details about said murder: the man killed was homosexual and it's widely thought that Faust committed the murder as an act of hatred towards him (I believe his side of the story is that the man came onto him and he killed him out of revulsion, but who knows). Second wave black metal was an absolute mess of hatred and bigotry, and some of that seedy underbelly still persists to this day.

I got the album Deathcrush when it was first released and together with the record was a coupon that said a photo book was initially planned to be included. However, as the photo book was not at the time completed, the coupon could be sent to the band and they would send the book out once it was completed. So I sent the coupon to the address with a letter commenting what I thought of the album. After a while I got a written letter back from Euronymous. This exchange of letters continued for a few more times when it suddenly stopped. I didn't really know what was happening with the band as this was a time before the internet and it wasn't until a number of years later when I finally had internet access that I found out he was killed. In the letters that I received from Euronymous, he actually came across as a nice person and to this day I still have the album, the letters and a photo that he sent me with one of the letters.
@@alexsutton2271 It was largely about music and I remember him saying that he was starting a record label. Since I live in Hong Kong, he was also interested in knowing if there was a possibility of performing here. I would have never expected you to go for this case. But you've covered it pretty well for a time frame of just 20 minutes. I've seen this Story covered dozens of times, some even more extensive and in depth. But never quite this well narrated I must say! Well done, Adrian.
If you have any doubts that Euronymous was a jerk, check what his bandmates, Hellhammer and Necrobutcher have to say about his murder. Those are the people who arguably knew his real self best, and both of them don't hold Varg guilty. Says quite a lot.
@@PoisonAngelGirl I think it's because euronymous killed Dead. Everyone loved him. Euronymous tortured him psychologically. His attempt at suicide was his doing already, but I am sure he shot him. Who can pull of a shotgun to the face with cut wrists and..neck? After losing all that blood..
Varg saved black metal by killing euronymous, it would’ve never evolved. Dead is still one of the best vocalists in the genre and arseth pushed him to kill himself while already suffering for cotard delusion.
A couple things you got wrong: The Dawn of the Black Hearts is not only NOT a Mayhem album, but it also came out in '95, 2 years after Euronymous' death. The Dawn of the Black Hearts is a bootleg tape from the colombian scene. Now you might be wondering, how did they get Dead's photo to use as a cover? Euronymous had sent copies (not known if all of the same or different photos) to many of his penpals around the world, one of which in Colombia. That might also mean that despite Euronymous' father having burned Dead's photos after Euronymous death, there might still be more copies of the set out there. Euronymous didn't open the front door and followed some blood trail. Instead he had climbed through a window because he had no spare key, window which was of Dead's room so he immediately came across the scene. Varg is heavily suspected of having set fire to Fantoft, yes, but he technically was never proven to have been the perpetrator which is why that burning wasn't accounted in his sentence. The church burnings also weren't in the name of satanism, but rather as a retaliation to christianity. The satanism part came as a mix of lies of their own for shock purposes and widespread media misinformation. Ironically you could say that the lie became the truth, because after all that misinformation some copycats started doing the same in name of satanism thinking that's what the movement was all about. Varg didn't claim he killed a man in Lillehammer, but rather that one of them did which was true. I'm not sure where you got the "it's yet to be proven" part from, it's easily verifiable that Faust has been sentenced for it and the details of the events are also known. Varg didn't snatch Euronymous' knife, Euronymous never even got to get one even though he did try. Varg had a swiss army knife in his boot which was what he used. This one is a bit of a nitpick, but the guy who stayed at Varg's apartment was simply a friend that was already there when Varg and Blackthorn decided to drive to Oslo. He wasn't a roommate. They supposedly let him stay because he wanted to finish a movie they were watching. Some of your pronunciations were off, but that I think it's perfectly understandable.
So fucking boring! When people can't even stand for something and keep playing in the shades. That makes everything sound as boring and nerdish as a fucking harry potter book.
I can’t imagine anyone, with or without a ring on her frickin’ thumb, giving anything but a sigh of relief upon finding out that Vikernes was not interested.

YES YES YESSSSSS I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU’RE COVERING THIS I’ve been a metal fan for much of my life and this case has disturbed me for a long time. I’ve hoped that my favorite true crime channels would cover it for awhile, but I didn’t think it would happen. Thank you for bringing it to light. Edit: lol @ Varg acting like he’s such a gift to women that he thinks they’d be devastated if he didn’t like their thumb ring (????). Sir, you burned down ancient churches, stabbed your friend to death, and left him in a stairwell. Women don’t _want_ you to like them. I also feel so bad for Dead. He needed help so badly, but he met Euronymous instead. I often wonder what he would have gone on to do if he’d gotten the support he needed before it was too late. I’ve seen “that” album cover and it haunts me, even more so knowing that Euronymous delighted in it. Dead didn’t deserve to be defiled like that. Even so, Euronymous didn’t deserve what happened to him either. It’s a terrible case. btw I've also had roommates who were so obnoxious that they made me want to sleep outside lol
As a metalhead who is familiar with this story I didn't expect it to be covered on your channel! It's pretty cool now that I can learn more about it in depth because I never really thought to before.
Also, I enjoyed the movie Lord's of Chaos. Especially cuz I found out just before watching it, they chose to cast a Jewish actor to portray white aryan supremacist & "race-mixing" opponent, Varg Virkernes lol. Whether it was intentionally done to offend his beliefs or not, a person who is so offended by the mere existence of so many people / places / things is bound to be triggered quite a bit. But this one was particularly frustrating to him, because that casting decision was made on top of the very anti-varg and pro-euronymus composure of the film.
What about Euronymous convincing his band mate Dead to kill himself? The story behind this seems to be that Euronymous thought he was a real satanist and said he wanted to murder varg, so much it got around the entire town. Using the photos of there band mate after he committed suicide was fucking gross too.
It's hard to know whether it was plain murder or self defense in the exact moment it happened. But as you said, there's smoke but no fire with Euronymous - and I personally believe Varg killed him before there was any need to defend himself. Euronymous fleed to grab a knife to defend HIMSELF, not the other way around.
Nah, it was murder clear and simple. ¨Count" Varg had and still has a massive superiority complex and he repeatedly demonstrated a tendency towards violence and destructive behavior with his serial church burning. Varg is one of those smug arrogant bastards who's too smart for his own good so he ends up believing his own superiority BS (and acts on it too).
I agree, nobody would go to someone's place after hours for contract stuff knowing y'all loathe each other n you've been told he was gonna kill u. He went there to kill him💯 Edit: and he set up an alibi already
Driving hours to meet a guy you're supposedly scared of at early hours of the morning, and then stabbing him twenty something times in the back (and through the skull) is not self defense. He didn't call emergency services either, it was a homicide, how more obvious does it have to get?
Great episode! Just a note, Dawn of the Black Hearts was actually a bootleg that exploded in popularity. It wasn't actually released by Mayhem or Euronymous
1) What you didn't mention about Euronymous discovering Dead's body was that he had to climb through an open window. The doors were locked and there were no other keys in the house. 2) Euronymous didn't deserve to die but it's hard to feel sorry for him. He let his obsessions with image and hatred lead him down a dark path of no return. 3) The part where you said that Varg "vargued" nearly had me dying! 😂 4) The only thing that I'll get Varg credit for is that kept his neo-Nazi views out of his Burzum music.

One of my “favourite” cases. Varg and Euronymous are/were both idiots. Especially Varg. I grew up with metal heads and they are literally the sweetest people to be around. They’re not like these d-bags.
He is an active neonazi now. I accidentally engaged in a twitter discourse with him. I did not know it was THE metal meme himself at the time. Long story short, he blocked me because I said homophobia isn't cool and he didn't know what friendship meant. But before i was blocked i saw his page and it's bad. Lock him up again I say, black metal has better things to offer than racism, homophobia and straight up arson and murder.
Vargue was a murderer and Euronymous was really the biggest idiot. He single handedly created some of the worst perceptions about black metal including satanism and white supremacy.
I really appreciate the none sensationalised coverage of this case from you. As a member of the Norwegian black metal scene since the early 2000s I can say that anyone I've ever met says that Varg is crazy. He is a talented musician, and Burzum is among the best BM bands I've known. As long as you can separate the art from the person. I listen to the music, but loathe the person behind it. Most people in the BM are good and level-headed people, and those few people do not represent us as a whole. When I joined the scene in my teens, I did not experience any judgement from people outside of the scene. Many of my friends worked IT jobs at big companies, showing up in Mayhem or Burzum t-shirts without any issue. I am sure that Varg murdered Eronymous with malice. So many things point to that. He claimed self defense, but common sense debunks that. Not only did he drive from Bergen to Oslo to meet the person he was "afraid of" alone, but he hid his tracks. Also, when acting in self defence you do not run after the person down a stairwell, continuing to stab them instead of running for your life.
It's honestly really frustrating how deeply Varg's influence permeated into the genre too. Black metal, more than any other metal subgenre, has a gigantic problem with Nazis and bigots, to the point where "national socialist black metal" is a subcategory of it that gets brought up a lot. You have projects like Nokturnal Mortem, Absurd, Peste Noire, and of course Varg's own work in Burzum that very explicitly promote hate, and even bands that seem like they would otherwise be safe end up being incredibly sketchy. It's hard to argue that without Varg being such a large presence, we might never have seen a rise in that type of lyrical matter. And it's doubly sad because black metal can go to a wide variety of different places. I'd even argue the Satanic aspects are some of the least interesting: within the same genre you can find the whimsical shoegaze influence of Alcest, the cosmic meanderings of Blut Aus Nord, and even explicitly leftist groups like Panopticon and Dawn Ray'd that stand in explicit opposition to NSBM.
@@jamesklingensmith7529 random thought but I didn't even know Alcest was black metal (I don't listen to them but I shot some photos of a performance they had for the venue)
Vargue was just a student of Euronymous regarding these aspects. Also i really doubt they are pushed in today's black metal though i am not the biggest fan of black metal as a genre but I can't bring to mind a specific band that does it anymore at least a mainstream one. Point is the white supremacy and Satanism prejudices regarding black metal were created and promoted entirely by Euronymous in the genre. He even wrote a book with his views about it saying he didn't consider any non Satanist to be black metal artist. The notion that these things are general problems of the genre is completely false.
I love the fact that you mentioned the Doomsday vault... that too has a tragic story behind it and the scientists that gave their lives for the seeds to be preserved. Hopefully you can cover it sometime :) Love and support this channel greatly
@@CoffeehouseCrime there is another equally as disturbing, case about the german black metal Band Absurd. It is obscure, but worth checking out as it gets pretty depraved, where they mock the murder victim in one of their songs. There are allegations that one of the murderous teens, had a sexual relationship with the parishioners wife. Those are people that shouldn't roam around among the general public.
The one thing you mentioned about "Varg killing a man in Lillehammer but it was never proven" actually refers to another murder, by Bård Faust of the band Thorns (Blackthorn's band), who got convicted to a prison sentence for that. Faust actually lived in the Helvete shop for a while and worked there, when all of the early Norwegian BM inner circle stuff was happening.
I'm pretty sure Faust killed that man for being gay and coming on to him randomly, at least that's what some documentary said which included Faust. Fucking tragic if so, just killing a man because he makes you feel insecure about your masculinity
Dawn of the BlackHearts is a bootleg album, not an actual Mayhem release, and Varg brought his own knife with him that he ended up using in the murder. Other than those, pretty spot-on. Also, the phrase "Vargued" was hilarious. Well done. :)

I truly don't mean as offensive, but I'm so curious as to why/how death metal has become so associated with Scandinavian countries. I get that to survive in years past, hardiness to survive the long cold months was needed, but how has the darkest of music become associated with the safest and most peaceable countries on planet? I hope my question doesn't sound ignorant-- though I know it must be. Is it related to other European ideology forced upon other cultures? What are your thoughts?
@@azurecielo52479 i think you meant black metal. Imo the scene is coming from northern europe, because of a few things: really depressive climate, where you have really long nights and harsh winters. For those that want a deeper dive into this, I would recommend the film Until The Light Takes Us which details the black metal scene in Norway including the Euronymous case.
Some corrections: While Euronymous did take the picture of Dead's dead body, he wasn't the one to use it for album art. The picture was sent to a pen pal he had in Brazil and that pen pal used it to release a bootleg live album. The album wasn't even released until two years after Euronymous had died. Also you mention that Varg found it suspicious that Euronymous wasn't dealing with the contracts in the shop because it was outside of shop hours, but the record store had already closed by then. Euronymous closed the record store a few months before he died.
Thank you for making this. As a metal fan, the amount of people who don’t know about the story behind mayhem is shocking and you bringing it to light is awesome.
I literally just brewed up, got back and this popped up just as I sat down. Great timing! ☕ I am familiar with this, this is going to be a good one (not that it's possible to be a bad one on Coffeehouse Crime!)
You never mentioned how obsessed dead was with death. He would collect dead birds and huff them before putting them under his bed because he liked the smell of death. He even tried killing cats to do the same thing but he could never catch them. He would also bury his clothes in dirt before a show so he could look more dead.
I'm a huge metal fan. I love the music, I love the fact that not everyone gets it. The deaths were huge back in the 90s and scared alot of people.. I feel absolutely dreadful for deads family though, imagine having to see that!
As a law student, I saw Varg at the High Court here in Paris. (We've had a task to describe a court procedure and by coincidence, he was there sitting just near. And he had this huge bodyguard.). His stare was ice cold. And when he was asked questions, he pretended he didn't even understand anything, and replied to the judge "Varg? Who's Varg. I'm Louis Cachet". He changed his name now and lives with his wife, Marie Cachet. They have a lot of kids.
Well, murderous Black Circle incident aside, It actually was gross over-reach and gestapo like tactics to haul Varg and his family in, the way the french feds did. That said, Varg is undoubtably a sociopath, but this time, he was treated unjustly.

And "lot of kids" - you weren't lying!! That's an army is what it is lol

I find it so heart breaking that The Dawn of The Black Hearts cover still exists.. I can't make sense of how someone could see their friend (or anyone really) in such a state after knowing they were dealing with depression and just think, "Hey! This would make a great album cover!". Takes a special kind of sickness..
Well. One thing is the video. But in the comments here, a lot of people state a lot of things that isnt true/assumptions and guessing. I also remember this, tho . I assume you are from Norway, like me .
6:55 I know this is horrible to say as a general rule but while i have yet to see what happened to him, the fact that he could do all this to his "friend" and bandmate (including the pathetic joke of getting away with it and giving away necklaces of the poor guys skull) makes me feel zero sympathy for him as an individual and hope he gets his just rewards. That is a truly sick and twisted mind that could do those things and get excited about his friends suicide......
It seems immensely selfish of him. There's many ways to grieve, and Ask a Mortician has talked about the importance of rituals surrounding the corpse to help people grieve, but he didn't seem to care what his dead friend or his living friends wanted done to the body in memoriam, he just did it.
Trauma can cause very strange reactions. But I agree, he was the oldest one in the scene and should have reacted differently if he cared about Per at all.
@Huwhite Devil this is fundamentally untrue. Blackthorne of Mayhem is alive (the one who was present at Euronymous' apartment the night of the murder) Ihsahn, Samoth and Faust from Emperor are alive. Atilla, Hellhammer and Necrobutcher (the remaining {contemporary to that time period} members of Mayhem not yet referenced in this post) are all alive, the duo from Darkthrone are both alive (Nocturno Culto and Fenriz) Demonaz and Abbath from Immortal are alive, Satyr and Frost from Satyricon are alive... This list is just the guys who hung out at Helvete and it's still not even close to all of them, it's just to prove the point that the only two who died are Dead and Euronymous. It's far quicker to list those who are no longer with us than it is all of the Black Metal Inner Circle who are still here. Several did prison time aside from the two murderers (Varg and Faust) but otherwise they've managed to avoid loss of life.
Varg's church burning is also said, by the man himself, to be in relation to anti-christianity, as opposed to Satanism. That Christianity had ruined the native religions of pre-Christian norway. Christianity was an occupying force where it didn't belong and must be eradicated. Something like that.
@@janm7163 he's always maintained that he didn't light the fires (which we know is bullshit). But then he gives insight on why the people who did it decided to do it. It's why I can't even hate Varg, he's just so bonkers.
Deciding to straight-up destroy history, rather than occupy and reclaim the church as a pagan temple, signifies smoothbrained subhuman mentality. I told him this myself but his mouth-breathing groupies jumped on and accused me of being a christian. Lol

And seriously.....you served your sentence and the Case is closed....nut up and just admit you killed the guy because he pissed you off. i mean from what has come out euonymus told multiple people that he was going to kill him and even asked for help doing it. so i mean... Varg was like fuck that .
Varg is questionable interms of honesty...BUT I think he is telling the truth here. From what I have read and heard about Euronymous over the years, it fits with how that guy seemed to be.

I'm showing my age now, but I remember when all of this was going down. The reputation of the black metal scene in Norway even became somewhat of a meme - to the extent that I remember getting a copy of a magazine about metal and it came with a sticker that said "Don't panic, I'm not a Norwegian satanic terrorist". Both did horrific things, but I have no doubt that Euronymous was murdered in cold blood, not self-defence.

Hard to tell with people like this, both of them don't seem like the most stable guys. Especially when your essentially playing a character 90% of the time, I think eventually for them both it became hard to differentiate the thoughts of their character from their own thoughts. I lean more towards Varg being the full instigator though, those youtube videos were very telling not to mention him saying "Euronymous kicked him and went for a knife when Varg when to hand the papers" doesnt make a whole lot of sense. According to Varg Euronymous was the one trying to kill him so why would Euronymous be jumpy?
Alright so as someone who has spent way too much time fixated on the early norwegian black metal scene, let me give a few quick corrections. 1: The idea that Mayhem used a picture of Dead's body as an album cover is a common misconception. That album, Dawn of the Black Hearts, was actually a bootleg live album, not an official release. The fact that the picture made it onto that album is still a mark against Euronymous though, as it goes to show just how much he was passing those pictures around. 2: Varg wasn't a Satanist, and didn't burn down those churches for Satan. Varg's is an Odinist neo-nazi, as later mentioned in the video, and the church burnings were according to him revenge for the Christianization of Norway. 3: We don't actually know what happened in that apartment, or who started the fight. That's all Varg's testimony, and Varg is a notoriously unreliable narrator who was trying to spin the killing as self-defense. That does get touched on later in the video, but the framing of the actual section on the murder felt a bit off. Also, the knife that was used wasn't one from Euronymous' apartment. It was Varg's pocket knife, which he pulled out and attacked Euronymous with, as Euronymous was supposedly running to the kitchen.
For my fellow Norwegians, or anyone else with access to NRK's streaming service, I highly recommend the four part documentary series they published two years ago. It dives even deeper into the beginnings of Mayhem and the Norwegian black metal scene, the events leading up to the murder, and the aftermath going into today. Slight pronounciation correction on the word "helvete": in Norwegian (and the other Scandinavian languages), words ending with -ete (or similarly with other consonants and vowels, including double consonants (e.g. -ette) pronounce *both* of the Es. Not the worst mistake ever, but one I commonly see
I remember someone set fire to the old wooden door of our church 20 or so years ago. It was replaced and within a month it was set ablaze again. The priest wasn't fucking around so he had the new door fireproofed and installed cameras. The culprits came back and tried again. The community couldn't figure who would do such a thing as the church was a cornerstone of the community. Everyone was confused when it turned out the black metal group that hung out at the defunct record shop was behind the arson. They also admitted to setting fires at other churches as well. Needless to say, after they were caught, black metal was viewed VERY negatively for years in the area. It doesn't help that, a few years later, a member of that same community murdered his girlfriend.

I wasn't expecting you to cover Mayhem story but it's so well presented with all the additional info and explanation that I don't think anyone else could do it better. Black metal is an interesting genre, there's a lot to it but not in a crime way. You're a legend Adrian, keep up the good work!
Love your non-3-hour deep dives. I love love love Mr. Ballen, but sometimes his quick pace is hard for my brain to comfortably process. Your voice and accent are soothing and easy to absorb.
He knows that but he clearly doesn’t care. That’s leftists for you; they will lie as long as it advances their political agendas. He chose to use it anyway in order to mock Vikernes and to get other brainwashed leftist lemmings to think it was the real Vikernes. This is the mark of a real coward. The first thing I noticed that was unusual about that bizarre footage was the obvious American landscape in the background; Vikernes lives in the French countryside. And for the record, I am no Varg fan in any way. I agree with probably 70% of his politics, but I am an Orthodox Christian and I find his mindless rants about Christian theology laughably inaccurate as well as absurd. Like pretty much all neo-pagans he unknowingly repeats Protestant concepts and more modern-day reformist heresies, and then claims that is what Christianity as a whole is; I have always said that neo-pagans and Protestants, ironically, seem have an awful lot in common in that regard. But that is a different subject altogether. What is equally ironic is that is the exact same thing that this channel did to him when it mocked him by using false footage of someone else and claimed it was Varg. There is no doubt that Vikernes is a rather intelligent fellow, but he is embarrassingly one-dimensional, with the stunted maturity level of a perpetual adolescent. I have actually met and spoken with people who knew him in his youth and some people who interacted with him online and he is an extremely stubborn man. If you even slightly disagree with him on just one thing, he immediately reacts with all-out anger and then blocks you. He is essentially 50 going on 17. Look up his treatment of Tom “Survive the Jive” and Marcus “Golden One”. I’m no fan of neo-paganism, but you couldn’t ask for nicer, more pleasantly even-keeled fellows. Varg carried out a childish attack on Tom and even encouraged his fans to attack the guy on his wedding day - all because he got married in a historic Anglican cathedral. They even went so far as to belittle his wife and make fun of their traditional wedding attire (I guess LARPy costumes and wolf skins would have been more appropriate for Vikernes’ tastes). Again, that is the sheer mark of a coward, not to mention it is also effeminate as all hell. What grown, adult fifty-year-old man does that?
I'm a huge Black Metal Fan and a CoffeeHouse Crime Fan. This episode hits the spot like a strong black coffee while listening to De Myteriis Dom Sathanas. Superb. P.S. This episode came into my feed just as I finished watching the 3 hour Helvete. It's going to be a long night indeed. I would love an episode done on Dissection and Jon Nodtveidt next please.
It’s really kind of amazing how much the production has improved since like 20k subs. It wasn’t exactly rough back then but the amount of work you’ve put into today’s content is really obvious. Great work.
I love that you covered a story from my country. As a teen in the 90's I didn't listen to Black metal, but we always heard lots about Varg Vigernes in the news. Especially about the church fires. He was mostly called "Greven" as I remember ("The Count" in english) The record shop Helvete is still there yes, but now it's called "Neseblod" (Nosebleed) Funny thing is, I remember som years ago, there was a bakery close by the record shop called "Vårt daglige brød" ("Our daily bread", like from the Lord's Prayer) And also when my son was a baby, I remember my son's father, who then worked for an IT-company, got an call while he was at work, from the prison Vigernes was in. He had to help Vigernes with som IT support 🤣 Yes in norwegian prisons the inmates gets to use technology. For anyone intrested, look up norwegian vs american prisons comparisons. If you wanna do more stuff on Norway, we have tons. But we have a huge one. Anders Behring Breivik, and the Utøya/Oslo bombing and mass shooting on 22nd of july in 2011
Dead Olin’s case always interested me. I was living in Finland when this happened, and the general affect of the youth was not unlike the scene in Norway at the time-only I think Finland’s deep foray into Black Metal evolved a bit after this (at least where I lived it did). I truly feel that Varg is one of those people who don’t take personal responsibility for anything-there will always be some excuse: look at his “reason” for stealing the rifle at 12, for example. He can keep spewing his “personal world views”, but it doesn’t detract from the fact that he stabbed a man in the head, neck, and back over 20 times.

I love how consistent you are! Thank you so much Adrian. I have been watching videos like this for years and some how you almost always find stories I have never heard of. Keep it up! Love you❤️❤️
A slightly off topic but considering this case from Norway, will you consider covering the case of "Isdal Woman", one on the longest & unsolved cases (in Norway) till date.
Yeah cause that case hasn't been covered enough or anything 🙄 there's plenty of videos about it here on TH-cam, and there are podcasts too. So please Adrian, DON'T cover it. It's been done to pieces already
Since this video was about metal artists, Adrian should do other metal cases instead (maybe the murder of Dimebag Darrell). The Isdal Woman has been done to death, even by phenomenal crime channels that no longer exist (Cayleigh Elise, for example).
A true pioneer of the brutally beautiful art that is Black Metal. It’s the dedication to the craft, to the *LIFE* of Black Metal & his musical prowess; THAT’S what he’ should be remembered for… it’s a shame Dead & Euronymous took it too far, Dead, if alive today, would be the best Metal vocalist around. & Varg? Varg, though a brilliant songwriter/ musician himself (Burzum *was* amazing- before it just became synth-goth),killing him was a truly a power move in an idiotic attempt to “take the crown” from Euronymous… Black Metal is not easily understood & not for everyone - but those who do understand it see it for the true art it is- it’s about the music, the imagery & the atmosphere - not about “worshipping Satan”!
Great video! I was 16 in 1993 and remember reading about this in Kerrang! It seemed so scary the way it was sensationalised back then. There’s so much more detail here and seems even scarier lol
YES! I thank you so much, Adrian, for covering something with the band Mayhem. That band has issues. In the incident where Euronymous took the photo of Dead, made necklaces of his skull, and used it as an album cover, Necrobutcher was SOOO upset, he cussed out and left Mayhem. Strangely, when Euronymous was later murdered by Varg Vikernes, Necrobutcher returned to Mayhem. The sad part of all of this is I liked Mayhem and I LOVED Varg's project Burzum. I don't condone ANYTHING these people have done, past, present, or ever; I just like the music.
I was a fifteen year old hard core metal head when this happened and I remember it vividly. I was too young to understand back then. But watching it now has had quite an effect.
Thanks for bringing up a very important detail that very seldomly comes picked up - the five year age difference between Varg and Euronymous. At this age, it is massive and imo contributes a very important patricidal explanation to fatherless Varg’s blind rage.
Ty 4 this video, as a metalhead ive heard lots of untrue things about this case and no one believed me when i said there was more 2 it. Love your channellllll😁
These guys Varg and Euronymousis are disturbing. Even more disturbing is the fact that there are people who produce films featuring the killing of people. A big enough following to warrant a category for that type of film - snuff films. Just creepy and horrible.
Doubtful. I’ve met several of these “metal” types irl. Most of them are just angry nerds that hate their dads, not the type to actually throw hands, yet alone knifes.
As a life long metal head I've heard this story many times but I enjoyed this video. You reached back a little further and shined light on some aspects that are often left out
I love how you do these videos. It's very relaxing, ironically, to listen to and rather pleasant. It helps my days go by smoothly. It allows me to build my empathy, especially for the victims, while at the same time learning about something new that I, more often than not, am completely unawares of. On top of that your presentation of the facts as well as the overall theme of your channel, as well as how you go about telling the stories in a patient, elegant, and empathetic way: really brings to life the cases you are talking about and paints a picture of all the tragedy that is involved. Unlike most true crime channels where they idolize the criminals, your videos do the opposite and tend to focus on the victims, it's a very welcome taste in a community so fraught with toxic behavior. If I had any qualms about this video it would be the mix up between Satanism and Luciferianism. Satanism is a godless religion where the practitioners use the aspects of Satan to depict how humanity should live (IE mind your own business, do what you want to do, appreciate and love yourself, etc), thus viewing him as a symbol over an actual god -- Luciferianism on the other hand is a religion with a deity. This deity is Lucifer/Satan, and while some people do become aggressive and violent: it is not the objective of the whole, and most Luciferianist are very similar to Satanists in their key doctrines (which are honestly really morally sound) but worship Lucifer/Satan as the less evil or deceptive god out of the two that are portrayed.
Adrian is a great host and he covers a very wide variety of true crime stories. This channel is very entertaining and Adrian never fails to bring us all such great content. TYVM for hard work you put in to continually bring us top notch videos!
I've seen the album cover (by accident) a while back. Literally almost made me vomit. I've never seen something so disturbing in my life. At first I thought it had to be fake, and then I read the disturbing story behind the album cover and it pretty much scarred me.

I have never actually met a mean metalhead or a mean punk. I'm not a HUGE fan of metal. I like some. But that's always been more than enough to make friends.
So true. Unfortunately the place where I'm from, the younger (14-18y/o) and newer generation in the scene has turned it around.. particularly the punks. They brought knives to gigs, smashed beer bottles onto people's heads - these people were not even moshing they were chilling by the side - with the reason "this person is a nazi sympathiser" when the poor guy wasn't even part of anything except that he was the organiser's assistant and also a father. These kids moshed while holding on to knives. They also tried to burn the hang out venues of other older punks, sometimes boasting about it on social media.

Horrible but it was also horrible of him to let his (what he probably thought was his friend) to walk into that horrific scene. I guess it uno reversed on him and ended up giving this gruesome scene to a psycho.

Necrobutcher is nothing but an attention seeking nobody
I’d argue that the current time is fairly rough to have mental health problems. These kids are being abused by big pharma. 80’s and 90’s they were at least ignored.

im sorry but that guy abused animals and from what ive read, wasn’t a very pleasant person to be around at all. yes he was mentally ill but mental illness isn’t really an excuse for that, he also most likely influenced Euronymous into having that same kind of mentality given that he was described as being a fairly normal person prior to living with Dead

this case is so ignorantly covered in general and rife with incorrect information, and I love coffee house crime but I figured he'd incorrectly cover it as well but i was somewhat pleasantly surprised that he did include some usually uncovered information, but varg did not burn down churches because of Satanism, satanic beliefs had absolutely nothing to do with it,varg felt Christianity blatantly destroyed Norwegian pagan cultures and the original religions of Norway so he burned down the churches because the churches and early Christians desecrated early Norwegian holy sites and burial sites...absolutely nothing to do with Satan and varg was not a Satanist,on top of that I think people should watch re-uploads of vargs channels upload about the early black metal scene and his relationship with euronymous theres alot more to it than what people say, varg is not a fucking neo nazi I think people really ignorantly portray him,he's opinionated as hell and has very old fashioned traditional values but he's not a nazi and euronymous was an absolute piece of garbage and this is not me being a fan boy because I like burzum and mayhem equally they were both incredible bands, but anyone who takes pictures of his dead friends suicide for kicks is a grotesque human being, also to correct one point you made...euronymous didnt make those pictures his album cover, dawn of the black hearts was a Brazilian mayhem bootleg album and people in the scene got ahold of the photographs and used it as the album cover it was directly euronymous himself

The band has already said that they REALLY hate that photo(s) and Necrobutcher said in an interview that he was planning to kill Euronymous himself because of it.

More "fun" details about said murder: the man killed was homosexual and it's widely thought that Faust committed the murder as an act of hatred towards him (I believe his side of the story is that the man came onto him and he killed him out of revulsion, but who knows).
Out of curiosity how much of Euronymus personal life did he share in the letters (if at all) or was it largely related to the band or music?
@@alexsutton2271 It was largely about music and I remember him saying that he was starting a record label. If you have any doubts that Euronymous was a jerk, check what his bandmates, Hellhammer and Necrobutcher have to say about his murder. Those are the people who arguably knew his real self best, and both of them don't hold Varg guilty. Says quite a lot.
Varg is still crazy though
If Varg didn't kill him, there were quite a few people who were at their limit with 'Euronymous'.
Necrobutcher has gone on record saying he was planning on killing him himself even 👀
@@PoisonAngelGirl I think it's because euronymous killed Dead. Everyone loved him. Euronymous tortured him psychologically. His attempt at suicide was his doing already, but I am sure he shot him. Who can pull of a shotgun to the face with cut wrists and..neck? After losing all that blood..

A douche killed another douch ....
Damn straight
Agreed 💯
Prison in Norway…you mean, Club Med?
Except it’s not true anymore! Almost everyone is a douche in some way or another!
A couple things you got wrong:
The Dawn of the Black Hearts is not only NOT a Mayhem album, but it also came out in '95, 2 years after Euronymous' death.

But this one was particularly frustrating to him, because that casting decision was made on top of the very anti-varg and pro-euronymus composure of the film.
Fuck yeah me too as soon as I saw varg and the Channel I just had to click on it
What about Euronymous convincing his band mate Dead to kill himself? The story behind this seems to be that Euronymous thought he was a real satanist and said he wanted to murder varg, so much it got around the entire town.
Using the photos of there band mate after he committed suicide was fucking gross too.

He took the photos but didn't use them for anything

He went there to kill him💯
Edit: and he set up an alibi already
4) The only thing that I'll get Varg credit for is that kept his neo-Nazi views out of his Burzum music.

Aa
I totally agree. I tried out quite a few different scenes when I was younger and metal heads were definitely the nicest people I’ve met 🤟
Vargue was a murderer and Euronymous was really the biggest idiot. He single handedly created some of the worst perceptions about black metal including satanism and white supremacy.
Preach. Metalheads fucking rule
Yeah really. Getting stabbed a crapload of times in the back is usually NOT a sign that YOU are the aggressor.🙄🤘
@@jamesklingensmith7529 random thought but I didn't even know Alcest was black metal (I don't listen to them but I shot some photos of a performance they had for the venue)
@@jamesklingensmith7529 Not getting to the merit of the person or anything, my only question is, where does Burzum promotes hate? Any specific song?
Vargue was just a student of Euronymous regarding these aspects. Also i really doubt they are pushed in today's black metal though i am not the biggest fan of black metal as a genre but I can't bring to mind a specific band that does it anymore at least a mainstream one.
Point is the white supremacy and Satanism prejudices regarding black metal were created and promoted entirely by Euronymous in the genre. He even wrote a book with his views about it saying he didn't consider any non Satanist to be black metal artist. The notion that these things are general problems of the genre is completely false.

At the time of the murder Faust was in Emperor
I heard the story but I didn't realise that it happened in Lillehammer where I have visited
I'm pretty sure Faust killed that man for being gay and coming on to him randomly, at least that's what some documentary said which included Faust. Fucking tragic if so, just killing a man because he makes you feel insecure about your masculinity
Exactly, this dude needs to get his story straight, there are actually loads of good documentaries about this case.

Dawn of the BlackHearts is a bootleg album, not an actual Mayhem release, and Varg brought his own knife with him that he ended up using in the murder. Other than those, pretty spot-on. Also, the phrase "Vargued" was hilarious. Well done. :)

While Euronymous did take the picture of Dead's dead body, he wasn't the one to use it for album art. The picture was sent to a pen pal he had in Brazil and that pen pal used it to release a bootleg live album. The album wasn't even released until two years after Euronymous had died.

I came here just to comment this.

Yeah, that definitely isn't Varg, and you are right - the video is on the Iraqveteran8888 channel.
Holy crap. Great detective work!
Have you done or thought about doing the one on Sophie Lancaster? The girl who was attacked just for being goth?
Per Ohlin's backstory was so sad. He really wanted to be dead.
The guy was a sick piece of shit who tortured and killed animals.
It is wrong to ambush and slice up your bandmates. These goofs were deranged and dangerous. Interesting story.
I generally agree with this comment
I can't argue with this logic. No slicing or ambushing.
It’s kinda like the East Coast West Coast gangster rap stuff they start believing their own lyrics and then bad shit happened
Vinyl or cassette? Streaming is shit.
It’s really kind of amazing how much the production has improved since like 20k subs. It wasn’t exactly rough back then but the amount of work you’ve put into today’s content is really obvious. Great work.
This case is pretty well known here in Scandinavia, thank you for covering a case from my part of the world.
You look like the brother of necrobutcher
I love that you covered a story from my country. As a teen in the 90's I didn't listen to Black metal, but we always heard lots about Varg Vigernes in the news.
Especially about the church fires. He was mostly called "Greven" as I remember ("The Count" in english)
The record shop Helvete is still there yes, but now it's called "Neseblod" (Nosebleed)
Funny thing is, I remember som years ago, there was a bakery close by the record shop called "Vårt daglige brød" ("Our daily bread", like from the Lord's Prayer)
And also when my son was a baby, I remember my son's father, who then worked for an IT-company, got an call while he was at work, from the prison Vigernes was in.
He had to help Vigernes with som IT support 🤣 Yes in norwegian prisons the inmates gets to use technology.
For anyone intrested, look up norwegian vs american prisons comparisons.
If you wanna do more stuff on Norway, we have tons.
But we have a huge one. Anders Behring Breivik, and the Utøya/Oslo bombing and mass shooting on 22nd of july in 2011
Holy shit, your husband helped him create the blogs to spread all of those nonsense. You're blameless and to be blamed at the same time 🤣
Burzum is actually the first music my son heard about half an hour after he was born. He's 2.5 and still loves the band as well as Rotting Christ.

@@esotericempyre4572not a flex at all, just a fact.
If you know the stories about his mum, it starts to make sense

A slightly off topic but considering this case from Norway, will you consider covering the case of "Isdal Woman", one on the longest & unsolved cases (in Norway) till date.
Yeah cause that case hasn't been covered enough or anything 🙄 there's plenty of videos about it here on TH-cam, and there are podcasts too. So please Adrian, DON'T cover it. It's been done to pieces already
@@user-mm4dk3kq4r Which is the best video on it please?

One of my favorite true crime stories, but “vargued” actually made me laugh out loud!
agreed.
Yes I thought I was the only one who caught that 🤣
Great video! I was 16 in 1993 and remember reading about this in Kerrang! It seemed so scary the way it was sensationalised back then. There’s so much more detail here and seems even scarier lol
I was literally born in '93, haha! I've heard of this case before, and haven't come across videos or podcasts talking about it.
He didn't use it as an album cover.

Thanks for bringing up a very important detail that very seldomly comes picked up - the five year age difference between Varg and Euronymous. At this age, it is massive and imo contributes a very important patricidal explanation to fatherless Varg’s blind rage.
Oh boy. A case I'm rather familiar with having been a listener of both Mayhem and Burzum during my early 20s.

These guys Varg and Euronymousis are disturbing. Even more disturbing is the fact that there are people who produce films featuring the killing of people. A big enough following to warrant a category for that type of film - snuff films. Just creepy and horrible.
I believe they both went into this meeting knowing it would be the final showdown, that only 1 was walking out of that apartment alive.
Would’ve probably been better if they killed each other. Just my opinion though 🤷♂️

I been watching yr cases for 4 years Adrian and still can't stand how crazy humanity is.
I appreciate that he made it clear that this is not a true representation of the entire black metal community.
