  • Leaking Oil Filter Housing and Oil Cooling housing gaskets are a very common issue on most BMW Inline 6 engines. In this video I show you how to replace both those gaskets, applicable to both the N5 and N54 engines. I am showing you how to complete this job on my 2013 BMW X5 E70 N55, however the steps are very similar on other applications such as on X3, 335i, 535i etc.
Always do your own research and use information from more than one source when tackling DIY Jobs!!!!
    Extra INFO:
    - It is highly advisable to use NEW bolts on both housings.
    - It is IMPORTANT to do an Oil change after this job to get any coolant that may have dripped into the oil pan, out. Also a coolant flush may be a good idea to eliminate any contamination.
    - After replacing engine oil filter housing and/or engine cooler, it is important to complete a "Oil Priming Procedure". I could not find easily linkable "official" documentation on this, but here are the steps:
    1) Make Sure Coolant and Engine Oil are topped off and at appropriate levels
    2) If available, connect a battery charger to the vehicle
    3) Remove electric fuel pump fuse (to avoid engine starting)
    4) Crank the engine for 10 seconds
    5) Let starter cool for 20 seconds
    6) Crank the engine for 10 seconds
    7) Let starter cool for 20 seconds
    8) Crank the engine for 10 seconds
    9) Let starter cool for 20 seconds
    10) Reinstall fuse for fuel pump
    11) Start engine and get to operating temperature.
    12) Verify Oil level via Onboard System
    12) When engine has cooled off. Double Check Coolant level

You're a solid teacher. Thanks for making this video. I have a 2012 X5 and this is the exact issue I'm having. I have a leaking oil filter housing and oil cooler housing. I appreciate you mentioning the socket sizes that we need to do this. Thanks!

Great video, very relevant for N55 drivers.
Salt City Euros/Anyone: There was a lot of oil that splashed up in the engine room over to the driver’s side. I image that oil dripped on the drive belt (serpentine belt) and then splashed up. Is it a good idea to replace the belt at the same time if there is lots of oil on it? Or the oil won’t really matter?

@saltcityeuros Great tutorial, I attempted this over the weekend, it went smoothly, so I thought, until I took it for a test drive. Turns out the oil cooler cracked right where the first baffle meets the mounting plate by the upper left bolt. I'm not sure if it was cracked before the work, but after, it cracked to the point where oil was spraying everywhere while driving. I torqued all the bolts to 16 ft-lbs. I also noticed a small leak at the oil filter housing to engine gasket. Any tips for improving the seal with the gaskets? Have you ever used anything on the gasket (oil, grease, rtv?) It's all tore back apart waiting for the new oil cooler to arrive. Thanks in advance!

Great tutorial! But imo it’s better to take off the intake manifold completely and replace the gaskets, and it’s good to check the intake valves for carbon build up.

What is the torque for those bolts?

  • @unixnerd23

This kind of stuff is why I went back to an E46 :-) I wonder if a Torx spanner could get that bolt out without removing the manifold?

I had a whole segment where I spent time trying various tools to get in there, to show how tight the clearance is. I couldn't even fit a slim 8mm wrench in there...It's just not possible in my opinion

Great video! I plan to tackle the same job on my 2012 X5 xDrive35i. Can you tell me which fuse you removed to cut off the fuel pump for priming the oil so the engine doesn't start? I'm guessing it's the F105 30A Fuel Pump Control in the rear cargo area panel but can you confirm?

    • @Lou-li3lb
      @Lou-li3lb ปีที่แล้ว

Did you ever figure out if this is the correct fuse? My 2013 X5 xdrive35i lists numbers 18, 105, and 122 next to the fuel icon on the diagram. My 105 is a 20A.

Do you have to prime the engine before start ? some people claim air pockets in the system and it kills the engine within a few miles
