Adam Savage’s Tested Using a pair of wide, slant-tip tweezers usually works a treat for removing the backing from tape. They’re sharp enough to tear through the backing, but not sharp enough to pierce the tape itself. Another option is to use a scrap of the sticky side of the tape attached to the end of the backing. This makes a tab that you can use to pull the backing off. Hoping this helps 😄
And I never thought about even looking for felt with sticky backing, been using the felt cutout and glued, seems so much easier and makes for a cleaner cut.
As much as I love the clean and refined version of One Day Builds normally, I also think the chaotic energy of Adam filming this all himself is amazing.

You should watch This Old Tony. You'll get plenty of awesome editing and all the tools & toolmaking and fabricating that you can stand. It's a great channel. He even has a lathe lol.

I Love how these videos remain super entertaining even as Adam films it himself on his iphone and uses airpods for microphones. Makes me realise he'd be an awesome content creator/builder even without a crew behind him. It shows you don't need much to do some really cool things. Pure creativity!
Hehe, I'm digging it though... the usual videos have very high production value and are beautiful, well made, and appealing... but Adam *is* that lovable backyard mad scientist... and this style fit him perfectly. Bonus point for seeing the shop being used - that inevitable clutter that accumulates as you work on something was good to see... usually its pristine . Great stuff all-around

That and the constantly damaged fingers, now a bandaged one. I've sometimes wondered if his impatience would cause a serious or fatal accident with the machines, but looks like they're happy to slowly whittle him away.
Mark Land nails from nail guns can travel to the side if they are diffracted by a hard material, such as a knot in hardwood (here plywood isn’t as much of a concern). If you’re going to make sure you don’t fasten your hand to your workbench, don’t just move it from the nail’s direction by some fraction of an inch ;)
Using a set of wide slant-tip tweezers to remove the backing tape usually works a treat. They’re sharp enough to cut through the backing, but not so much that it tears the tape itself. Another option is to use a scrap piece of the sticky side of the tape and use that as a tab to peel the backing off.
@@chasewinkler4679 simply start the unbacking at the start of the roll and clip away a small sliver of the sticky part of the tape. This leaves a handy pull tab on the backing material to allow you to quickly and painlessly unback the tape you're applying to your project, and when you get to the end of that particular measurement just make the cut like normal to the sticky part of the tape and then make a separate cut to the backing to preserve the pull tab. Most of the time, when I use double-sided tape from a roll I'm usually unbacking as I go with the roll just hanging from my application site.

It feels like you are just a friend next door sharing his very relatable challenges and solutions. I love how the design evolved over the course of the build. Thank you. That was a simple, but at the same time - awesome, one day build.
I still cringe when i see his finger and the story behind it. Especially when he almost "lost" his bandage at 11:17 what was kind of funny but at the same time not.
Just here to echo my adoration for some of the FANTASTIC jump cuts of editing playfulness! I honestly laughed out loud at the narrow headed stapler sequences. Splicing out of sequence staple hits into his speech, also genius. Definitely open to more playful editing like this. It was a surprise delight after watching so many of Tested videos. @@kshatriya1414 There are tearouts and misalignments all over the place. The bottoms are perforated with pin nails. Again, I love him and I get that it's not an art piece, but if it was me I would like to have it nice, even when it's shop infrastructure.
@@prottentogo I have to agree...he's a pretty sloppy maker overall. Most of the stuff he makes is not very well put together or even sturdy for that matter.
The biggest difference between Adam and other people's maker channels is the genuiness and level of excitment he has for all the little things he does, purely joyful like from a little kid we all once were.

When I remove back from VHB, I use the point of an exacto blade and stab the backing at an angle and flick straight up. Usually pops the backing right off.
Big brain is just using children't safety scissors to leave a nice ragged edge. I did something like 50, 1" strips recently in a place nobody would see it.
Yep, size of the lathe-injury bandage goes back to 'how black is that one fingernail'... I get lost before that but it lets us order things chronologically for a couple months at least. :)

All that needs to happen is your toolbox/workbench gets roughly handled (ie, an earthquake, a co-worker [or you] knock it over, you try to move it carefully to avoid having to pack and unpack everything constantly, etc) and your stuff goes everywhere.
I love the editing in this video. There's a wonderful humor in hard cutting to adam just hitting the tape with a hammer, and then a moment later, hitting the new holder with a hammer.

First of all, hell yes the backing tape thing is a curse all too real, happy to hear it's not just me. Second of all, these videos are so much better filmed now that you don't yourself, no weird angles missing all the action, no weird focus and honestly a static camera gets the job done so well!

Ya see, the cast iron pan is a machinists most beloved tool-one of the few tools in a shop that are truly multipurpose and of artisanal quality. It's a fixed circle measure, a pattern weight, an even-dispersal heat shield, and, dare I say-a weapon. Fabricate one, and you won't be disappointed.

Whoever edited this is a genius. Im loving the cuts of rapid nailing and theres a few moments where the camera seems to cut at just the right moment to make the scene funnier to me. Kudos.
Seven Sins all I can think of is that it might be a chip and oil tray for under where the lathe is cutting. Not a great option. I use a large baking tray but that sits under the whole lathe. Maybe this is for between the material and the bed.

Well, every day in Adam’s cave is an accident waiting to happen. See how close his hair is to a spinning drill press at 9:26 - I didn’t even have to leave this video to find an example.
I knew a professional woodworker who used to hang over every piece of equipment that he got hurt on the hospital wristband that he 'earned' as a reminder.
So many cuts on the table saw that could be done with a guard in place, but no guard... (some cuts can't have a guard, and that is what it is, but when you're just making normal through cuts, put the guard back on!)
If you have a workshop you have a world to run around in. Glad the holder didn't go on the side of the tailstock, hand slips off tailstock feed handle, wrist down, centres up. Love the videos.
I have to say, watching with the generated subtitles leads to some interesting results. Sometime they're ahead of the speach and show up some 10 sec before Adam says the line. Other times you get gems like Adam saying "I love forstner bits" but gets subtitles as "I love poor servants". Fantastic
Love the feel of this video! The edit was was fun and helped play on the fact that this isn't a "normal" one day build. Adam has often talked about feeling guilty about building without someone filming, this is the answer. If you ask me, "Adam Savage's One Day Builds" just released a pilot to it's spin off "An Afternoon Building With Adam"
Joeys editing was top notch this video, between being fascinated by what Adam was doing and the laughing from all the great cuts and whatnot this was incredibly enjoyable!
When you were changing the bandsaw blade it gave me flashbacks to my woodworking days in school. There was one day where a 3 bandsaw blades broke in a row. Its safe to say our teacher was not happy.
I love the different video editing styles on Adam's channel. I don't think I've seen any edits by Joey before this one, but this feels like it was thrown together by Adam from start to finish. The nail gun time lapse around 18:25 was my favourite. Made me smile. (I do wish Adam's sentences weren't cut off so frequently though.) And I have to say, Gunther is an artist with his edits. I love how clean and smooth his videos turn out, but I especially love the ASMR-esque parts. Watching Adam build and just hearing him work, listening to the tools, is so meditative and sweet for me. Love it. Keep it up, team :)

Well he's shooting down inline with the material, so no not necessarily.
I unconsciously yelled "FINGERS!" Right as he lined it up lol.
To me it looks like his hand is at the same height as the nailgun but since he's shooting it diagonally down they wouldn't be in the line of fire.

I think you have to lose a certain number of chuck keys (Hundreds by my estimation) to figure it out on your own. 😂

The secret to removing backing tape is to use a piece of tape! Tape the corner, and pull.
He's the mad scientist of making, and I love it. All I do is sew and knit, but this man inspires me more than any of those craft-specific channels.

I'd like a "favorite tools" on that cast iron pan next to the lathe..
Ya see, the cast iron pan is a machinists most beloved tool-one of the few tools in a shop that are truly multipurpose and of artisanal quality. It's a fixed circle measure, a pattern weight, an even-dispersal heat shield, and, dare I say-a weapon. Fabricate one, and you won't be disappointed.

Whoever edited this is a genius. Im loving the cuts of rapid nailing and theres a few moments where the camera seems to cut at just the right moment to make the scene funnier to me. Kudos.

Seven Sins all I can think of is that it might be a chip and oil tray for under where the lathe is cutting. Not a great option. I use a large baking tray but that sits under the whole lathe. Maybe this is for between the material and the bed.

I knew a professional woodworker who used to hang over every piece of equipment that he got hurt on the hospital wristband that he 'earned' as a reminder.
It's funny but experienced people often hurt themselves because they get too comfortable with the machines
@@CAMSLAYER13 Yes - in fact I’m quite sure it’s the most common cause for accidents. I think Adam even talked about this recently.
So many cuts on the table saw that could be done with a guard in place, but no guard... (some cuts can't have a guard, and that is what it is, but when you're just making normal through cuts, put the guard back on!)
This is easily the most therapeutic channel for creatives to watch during quarantine. Thank you Adam 🤘

If you have a workshop you have a world to run around in. Glad the holder didn't go on the side of the tailstock, hand slips off tailstock feed handle, wrist down, centres up. Love the videos.
I have to say, watching with the generated subtitles leads to some interesting results. Sometime they're ahead of the speach and show up some 10 sec before Adam says the line. Other times you get gems like Adam saying "I love forstner bits" but gets subtitles as "I love poor servants". Fantastic
Love the feel of this video! The edit was was fun and helped play on the fact that this isn't a "normal" one day build. Adam has often talked about feeling guilty about building without someone filming, this is the answer. If you ask me, "Adam Savage's One Day Builds" just released a pilot to it's spin off "An Afternoon Building With Adam"

When you were changing the bandsaw blade it gave me flashbacks to my woodworking days in school. There was one day where a 3 bandsaw blades broke in a row. Its safe to say our teacher was not happy.

I love the different video editing styles on Adam's channel. I don't think I've seen any edits by Joey before this one, but this feels like it was thrown together by Adam from start to finish. The nail gun time lapse around 18:25 was my favourite. Made me smile. (I do wish Adam's sentences weren't cut off so frequently though.) And I have to say, Gunther is an artist with his edits. I love how clean and smooth his videos turn out, but I especially love the ASMR-esque parts. Watching Adam build and just hearing him work, listening to the tools, is so meditative and sweet for me. Love it. Keep it up, team :)
