  • Adam upgrades his shop's powermatic drill press with a crank to raise and lower the table, but the crank he has isn't made for his particular model drill press. The restoration and install of the crank goes by fast and works out well, but it ends in the unexpected breaking of another part. Adam's plan for an upgrade quickly pivot to a disassembly and repair!

    This press has worked like a charm for my projects th-cam.com/users/postUgkxajoEbapTfqWaadnqb04h6U576yxXp-FE . I didn't even secure it to my table top, mainly due to the fact that I was using a 15 lbs drill vise. It's not flimsy at all as to what others have claimed it to be. Make sure the locking nuts and levers are secured and there won't be any issues with light pressure and patience. I was able to drill through aluminum, plastic, and steel (steel took a while) with no problems at all. Yeah it took a little longer than a regular drill press, but I don't have the space OR the money for one.The instruction manual was worthless, but luckily assembling the press was intuitive. However, the manual would be good for ordering replacement parts if needed. There is a nice breakdown of the parts that are included in the kit. Before ordering, make sure it is compatible with your unit, it is clearly stated what models the press is compatible with.This was an excellent purchase for $40!!

    I have an old Jet 13R Drill press that has similar threads above the taper and they are for a nut that’s only purpose is for removing the chuck. It’s tightened up against the spindle for normal operation and spun the other way to push the chuck off when needed. I imagine the threads have the same purpose on that one. The taper when clean and true should be all that’s needed to lock the chuck on. I scanned some of the comments and didn’t notice anyone mention anything about the threads so I thought I’d let you know. I enjoy your videos. Thank you. Ron

    Hey Adam, great repair! Maybe to make your life living with a keyed chuck a bit easier: I’ve modified the key for my dad’s drillpress, basically putting a nice handle on in. Turns it more into a screwdriver, way easier to use than that smal fiddly key. I did it by cutting a slot in the end of a piece of wood, and pressfitting that over te key, no need to even modify the key itself. And thanks for all the lovely content btw!

    I absolutely love these shop infrastructure videos! For me there's something really gratifying about performing critical maintenance or repairs. When I eventually get my own shop, I want to get a lot of second hand tools and take the time to repair and restore them before putting them back to work. As Adam's said before, There's nothing like taking something apart and putting it back together to really get an intimate understanding of how it functions. Also, I love how in the slate, you can see the reflection of Adam's phone. I'm honestly surprised they haven't set him up with a few cameras to set up in a few key locations in the shop. I'm sure they have their reasons, and this definitely allows for a more "shoot and go" style, but maybe having a birds eye for time lapses, and one or two "Key Tool cameras." like one by the Lathe/Table Saw and one for the Sanders/Drill press. This was recorded 2 months ago, so who knows, maybe they have by now.

    My pépère taught my dad and they both taught me that you have no business owning a home if you don't have at least some ability and knowledge about how to maintain it. Part of that was learning the workshop which was part machine shop and part wood shop. Again pépère's theory of teaching me to use the tools in the shop was teaching me how to fix them. His thought was that if you get to know how a thing is put together and how to put it back together then you would have a better idea of what it was capable of and how to use it correctly. I think he was right.

    Int tapers are often cut with a specific end mill and/or reamer- specific to the size and type of taper you want to cut. If there is room in the keyless chuck you could just cut it a bit deeper, the recut depth depending on how much "mauling" you have to clean up.

  • @wambsganz8
    @wambsganz8 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Maybe someone has pointed this out to you but the the threads above the taper are there solely for removing chucks from the taper shaft. If you look at the collar on the replacement rack assembly It has holes on the sides. The ideal is to lower the collar until it touches the chuck. Take a piece of brass round stock and put it in one of the holes and give it a tap with a hammer (clockwise). The chuck should fall off. Don't forget to catch the chuck and never put a new or different chuck on without the collar in place because you will have a most difficult time removing the chuck in the future. Essentially it's there just to break the taper fit.

    Basically, Adam, as a toolmaker and machinist I always take the approach that I can fix any machine. Manuals or no manuals. This will work 99% of the time because all of the mechanical principles are the same. When you are youtubing next, watch random repair videos. You will soon notice all the similarities. I'm very picky in my own work, I always approach everything with the finesse of a toolmaker. It can be problematic for me sometimes. Where I'm going with that is you will see a lot of different and some times "interesting" ways to get the job done, but its all learning.
    On the topic of fixing anything, for the drill chuck, if I had access to the machinery I needed, a cylindrical grinder, I would grind that chuck taper out to the next size, good as new. The old spindle can also probably be repaired with a spray weld and a regrind. Might be worth getting it done for an emergency spare.

    Machine some threads into that old chuck and thread something on, could be another taper to use in your lathe, or just a big bolt so it's easier to clamp in a vice.
    I've used old chucks to hold brass or aluminum rod when manually filing them into a weird part, or for holding drill bits while sharpening them. Plenty of uses for an old chuck if you completely toss out the idea of using it as a drill chuck.

    Motorizing would be really easy... Attach a motor on the shaft where the handle is, run wires up to the machine - cut some slots in the sheet metal or plate in the front and add a 3 way rocker switch with return to center by default... spring switch... then you have up / down... You could also add a knob for speed control. That would be cool to see. Although, for soldering, heat the wire and let the solder flow into it. You can use a tiny dab of solder on the iron to help transfer heat - but keep the tip clean and it will transfer fine with it just lightly tinned. I mention this because I've seen your soldering and we can always improve on something; even as masters.

    If you ever have that kind of problem again with a worn shaft and replacements are not available, go to a crankshaft repair shop where they do metal spraying. They can build up the surface and grind it to whatever tolerance you need.

    Don't have a replacement for the keyless chuck but know how to repair the spindle/chuck you have. Use lapping past and lap the two parts in to a perfect fit. Only need to make sure the surfaces that are still good mate but don't worry about the galling. After thoroughly cleaning the spindle and chuck, acetone and blow clean with dry clean air. Put several drops of locktight green in the spindle. Test fit with turning to spread, after completely spread on spindle and chuck, press and hold tight the chuck onto the spindle overnight. Both mechanical securing and the locktight green expands in the chuck making an incredibly secure connection. Guaranteed to be not as good as new but closest to it.

    I used to be excited about One Day builds, as there was more substance to it, and Adam was really teaching us while going through the process of building things from scratch, which is not the case anymore. I understand that now he is doing all the work by himself, working and thinking about the camera angle, but lately, one day builds were brought down to modification of equipment most people don't have. I am not saying these are not fun videos to watch, but imo, they simply should not be a part of one day build series. I miss videos where we can actually learn how to make something from Adam's enormous knowledge and experience, and his great teaching skills... But hey, that's just me... :)

    • @theangrymarmot8336
      @theangrymarmot8336 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      He is demonstrating his knowledge and experience here perfectly. You should look past that the video is about a drill press and focus on the process. There are many basic mechanical concepts demonstrated here that apply to a wide variety of things like making. This video demonstrates how a rack and pinion gear system works, how set screws work,proper lubrication, importance of manuals, and the concept of organizing your project efficiently. For people who do not have a bunch of experience there is a wealth of things in this video.
      Also, without tools - you can't make things. I know so many people who are great creators - yet fail to understand the concept of tool upkeep and proper use and it causes them much frustration when things do not turn out as expected due to tools issues.
      Drill presses aren't unobtainable and one of the most affordable and important tools that a maker can buy. Most novice / intermediate makers/hobbyist do not realize the how much easier, safer, and nicer things turn out when using a drill press versus a hand held drill. If you are someone who regularly engages in projects, a drill press and vice will be a revelation in comparison to using a hand held drill. You can buy second hand free standing or bench-top drill presses for very little money - even more-so if you buy one that needs a little maintenance and use this video as a general reference on how they work to assist in the refurbishing.

    Adam please consider when using a test indicator to bring a part/tool/fixture into concentricity with a spindle it might not be necessary to spin that indicator with machine power. You are the only person I have seen do that. I don’t understand how you can even read the indicator, except the needle moves or doesn’t move. Is it possible to damage the indicator using it this way? Love your show.

    Adam, if only for the sake of learning new skills I would have a go at repairing the old spindle. If you consider it junk anyway what have you got to lose? The male taper although gouged up can probably be made good by stoning down the high spots, and for the Chuck, you can get Jacobs taper reamers to clean up the bore. Ok it won’t be perfect, but it might be good enough for a spare or making a dedicated spindle sander. The only way to truly repair to original spec would be to weld build up the male taper and cylindrically grind it back to size. It can be done in the small machine shop with a toolpost grinder on the lathe but is quite an advanced project. There are many videos on TH-cam about shop made ER collet chucks that cover the same Principles. Personally I wouldn’t scrap it though!

    I wonder if you could use the spiral-cutting feature of your lathe to make a knurl on this new chuck, making it functionally keyless?
    It might be able to do much more open spirals than what you used for the giant brass machine scree, as well as make a series of them, as well as make then in the opposite direction, allowing you to make a knurl.

    With a little cosmetic work, that old, messed-up chuck would make an excellent Stedjim.
    What is a Stedjim? It's a medical device, used to diagnose an unconscious patient. It's held about 3" above the unconscious patient, and slowly circled over the patient, while making that noise where you whistle and hum at the same time. After about ten seconds, you turn to your companions and say:
    " 's dead, Jim!"

    Given there is enough flesh left on the taper it might be reground using something like a tool post grinder (externally with a grinding wheel or with a die grinder) and the precise compound angle for the taper on the lathe. The tapers will intersect a bit higher than before. There are videos how to set precise compound angles using a sine bar and gauge blocks.

    Now that you are going to a keyed chuck, you might want to add a key holder on the front of the drill press head. This saves you from hunting for the key every time. I prefer a manual clip, but some places use something like a keychain retractor.
