  • This is my quick review of the new Canon R5 C firmware update ( version 1.0.4.1 / 1.0.5.1) after having used it for a couple of weeks now out in the field on shoots. This my explanation of the top 3 improvements in my opinion. The Canon R5 C is an amazing camera and really did just get that much better!

Awesome. It's a solid update that I have found very useful overall.

I got my R5C a month ago. Im still playing with the codec trying to get the most quality with least data I shot my last corporate interview at 6k mp4 looks pretty good so far!! I also shoot a corporate party using 1080p a 3200 it cam out great!

The 8K RAW is hefty but for music videos or car commercials, the quality is absolutely fantastic. The RAW Lite is so robust, I don't even go past that. The 4K XF-AVC with its 10bit color has been wonderful too. The HD is surprisingly good. I had one experience where I was editing, cropped in significantly, thought it was looking great and realized, it was when I had switched the camera to HD instead of 4K. I couldn't believe the HD looked that good cropped in somewhere around 30%. The downsampling this camera does from the 8K sensor is superb.

Just looked and they have a new firmware update here that I have not tried yet. It carries over all the features I discuss in the video but then adds what looks to be more compatibility with their CN-R lens line.

Can you plug into the USB C to a USB plug and plug it into the wall instead of a dummy battery? A typical USB C to USB C plug

I have not tested pluging straight into a wall but I think it would work. You do NOT have to used a dummy battery but rather, just run USB-C cable to your external battery. You do have to have a regular battery in the camera, even though it is not being used. So for your external battery solution, purchasing a dummy battery is not a part of the requirements.
One additional note, when you turn the camera off, if it is connected to your external battery of choice, the battery in your camera will be getting charged up by your external battery. This can be good if you want to charge your battery, however, it can also find that if you were not intending to do that, when you return to turn your camera on the next day, your external battery is now dead. So I recommend as a general rule of practice, unplug your connection to the battery when retiring the camera for the day.

I was super confused when I went to download the 1.0.4.1 version and it had disappeared. I'm hoping that one day we get C-Log 2 in one of these firmware updates for the R5C.

It was weird to see it yanked as a downloadable option. I was wondering what catastrophe I was about to run into while waiting for 1.0.5.1. Luckily nothing did and now have the latest version. It is odd how C-Log 2 in camera is not an option. When you drop the RAW files into Adobe Premiere, by default, they are in C-Log 2. You have to manually change them to C-Log 3 if you want them to be. I go back and forth between the two on my color grading. Sometimes one works better than the other for a particular look.
