    Had to come check this out. Great work Mike! Have to love the problems along the way, its all part of the fun. I do have a tip for you with the joint compound. If you use a wet rag you can run that back and forth over the dried compound mix to flatten it. There will be no dust in the air :). Just keep a bucket of water nearby to wash the rag out.

      Thanks for taking a break from your website project and checking it out! Good tip on wetting the joint compound down...I'll definitely put that one in the back pocket!

    the author does like to from scratch, shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxD-QRFQz730FJEh4f9BYSf-nkIMIC9hL_ as another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us dont have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we wont be able to practice the full stack project, is still great.

    I appreciate you showing your mistakes. In the era of TH-cam makers, I find so much is edited down in order to generate "good content" that the audience loses the drama of overcoming inevitable challenges every maker is going to have in every build. Challenges are half of the fun and I am glad you showed us yours. Thanks.

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial  6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Thanks! Yea, for me, when mistakes happen I am often frustrated, and adding the process of filming additional segments to document the mistake on top of it can sometimes be too much. But, this time I decided to make that effort.... And, I'll remember this positive feedback next time a setup back occurs, so I can turn a negative to a positive by helping others avoid the same mistakes :)

      Great work and very much appreciated that you show the mistakes. I make them all the time and just get's to a better product in the end. That is, if you have the patience to keep going. And you do Modustrial Maker. Find this very inspiring to watch.

    Dude, you KILLED it! Not only did you have a great concept, you also showed amazing persistence. If my epoxy had failed to cure, I would have chucked the whole thing in the dumpster and just given up. This is a top contender for the contest, for sure. My vote goes to you. (Oh, wait, I don't get a vote? Crap.)

    That thing is just stunning, Mike! I really like how the top has the white paint and the underside is natural. I think it all blends really well. That was good thinking with making another plywood top just in case the epoxy didn’t work out, but glad you didn’t have to use it.

    I had trouble with my first epoxy project also. Lessons learned, make sure to get equals parts exact. I find the easiest way is to poor each part into separate cups then combine. And 2nd most important step continual mixing for whatever length of time stated in instructions. set a stop watch. Its critical that the chemical reaction takes place correctly. This is the reason epoxy will not cure. Dont guess how long its been. Watch the stop watch

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup, I learned the hard way. I'll add to that to use a clean mixing cup each time. I'm pretty sure I got 1:1 , but I used a cup with leftover epoxy from the previous layer (it had been sitting for two hours). I figured that because it had been mixed at 1:1 previously I'd be fine, but I wasn't....

    Glad to know plywood works just fine with epoxy projects. Want to make a very large desk with a river pour in the middle, but hardwood live-edge slabs like the typical river tables would run me $1000+ for the size I want, when a plywood sheet is maybe $60... plus hardwood is hard to wall mount with out heavy it is.

    1st off congratulations on a beautiful piece, your the artist and craftsman I attain to be, that being said You have to lose the sandpaper for the finish work on the joint compound and instead use a sponge and warm water. I also learned this the hard way at a customers house, I had to pay some girls to come in and clean the entire house because I dusted the place, and before you jump my a$$ this was one of my 1st jobs I now build and enclosure or dust proof each room individually if I’m sanding or using a saw indoors.

    Im late to the party but this is awesome! do you do custom pieces or consult on how to make a custom piece? I really want to create a double waterfall on our kitchen island with the back waterfall being L shaped bar height and the other side coming down as a waterfall with a miter edge and epoxy river flow down the middle and sides. Im looking for a white high gloss to go over plywood....any suggestions?

  • @DumbCrumb

    It's probably been mentioned but it's a shame you didn't polish up the epoxy at the joins. It looked really cloudy in the pixel joint and it's because you left it at a raw sand?

    Great project! Nice unique spin on a popular trend with the pixelation. I think we have the same planer; have you run into any issues with the dust collection on it? Mine constantly clogs up, but I may need to try thinner passes to see if that helps.

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial  6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Epoxy doesn't bond to cured epoxy. You should have roughened the surface of the old epoxy before pouring a new layer.

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is accurate, but wasn't the issue here....the surface was definitely rough both times I redid the top layer. It was a thin sticky layer of the improperly mixed epoxy that I didn't scrape off that prevented it from bonding the first time around.

    Not 100% sure, but most people measure epoxy by weight, not volume. Maybe that will help.

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The instructions that came with this epoxy required 1:1 mix by volume. The error was my fault - I reused mixing cups with residue from the previous layer, and this is when the error occurred. Every other mix I used a new cup, mixed 1:1 by volume and it worked great.

      I definitely had that thought (and actually had a poll going on Instagram about whether to use the belt sander or planer -- results were 50/50 with a couple hundred voting). My biggest concern was the plywood "fingers" on one end catching as they went through the planer, and tearing out. If that would have happened, then the project really would have been ruined, because the crisp pixelated edges of the river would have been lost.

    I am wondering if its OK to make a higher side table that you can put in a hallway. Also wondering if a super shiny top layer clear coat would make it pop and protect the white paint layer. Thoughts?

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, and yes. Should work great as a hall table, and an extra layer of clear tabletop epoxy would add protection for everyday use.

      @@modustrial did you consider lag nuts to secure the sides with the top of the bench? They would have been quite deep into the wood.

    The spray you used on the epoxy is much different than windex. Windex is terrible to use on stuff like this or plexiglass and will scratch the surface so dont ever use it as its an abrasive substance and not meant for this sort of application.

      Glad I could help in some small way. I used that same kit when I worked in a gallery where we regularly built and installed plexiglass box and display cases and went through an class with our plexiglass guy about the proper use and such. If you dont have that blue bottle spray and youre cleaning plexi and epoxy another thing thats good to use is a small bit of liquid hand soap and warm water and a soft cloth. Dont need much soap, and it will do the job. Cheers on an excellent bench, turned out wonderfully.

    I was wondering why the epoxy is layered, you can't just do one pouring of epoxy? and fill it up?

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Big pours are more likely to trap bubbles, and the instructions for this suggested building up in 1/4" layers, so I went with that.

    Wow, can't say I have ever seen epoxy stay in a liquid form. I wish you could explain that a little better. Big time user error or it wasn't worth the cheaper epoxy? There are some great casting resins out there that would easily allow you to pour that in one thick layer with no problem. Really cool piece, just like all your builds. Thanks for sharing, you definitely inspired me to go create.

    I like the epoxy pour and table design, I've used the same epoxy and you do have to rough the surface if it's cured overnight. The project looks pretty, but I have to imagine that it will fail miserably over time (if you actually sit on it). There is simply too much stress on the joints, dowels, and joint-compound.

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is surprisingly solid, 1.5" thick plywood running opposite directions and solid maple dowels. I would totally agree with you just looking at it, and was planning to add a stretcher....but sometimes you just have to try something out in person and see how it works to know....this one surprises me every time I sit down and it feels solid.

    Really enjoyed your build and persistence to stay with it. I am always curious when you guys use baltic birch, what appearance grade do you buy?

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just because it is readily available at Home Depot and the plies don't have many voids....also, it tends to stay flatter than some of the other varieties. When doing nicer stuff where the veneer is exposed I prefer to go with maple plywood from my local lumberyard.

    The marine grade epoxy is the lowest grade possible. It’s all the leftover batches of epoxy mixed together. I would suggest never buying marine grade epoxies. The general purpose is much better.
