DIY concrete EPOXY LED lamp || how to make || woodworking

  • This video shows how to make a modern DIY LED table lamp or desk lamp from concrete, a 2x4, epoxy resin, and a water pipe. This is a fairly simple DIY woodworking and concrete project with a modern look. To make this modern LED light I cut a channel in a 2x4, and put a PEX tube in it, then poured epoxy over the tube. This created a hollow channel where I could insert an LED strip. The tube and epoxy act as a diffuser for the LED lighting.

    just a note
I followed your instructions to a T just because I loved the design
The light isn't too strong which makes your choice of lighting very bad. It doesn't even work as a reading lamp. I ended up replacing the led strip with an led aluminum strip (you can find it on ebay or dhgate, really cheap) that had an 18000 lumen rating. Worked like a charm
But other than that your design and implementation were flawless
    Thank you

This lamp is so awesome! I’m really glad you found that tubing. I’ve been playing with an idea for awhile and that tube is the solution to at least one of the problems (still a work in progress for WAY down the road). Awesome design too! Love that extra back triangle addition.

Great design!! If you do it again, you can use an aluminium strip behind the LEDs (and thermally conductive glue) and it really helps for cooling!

One tip i would have for this is to cut the false ends off of the original board before you channel it out so that the wood grain matches on the final piece.
Or better yet would be to route out the area for the LEDs and only cut one side open so that the finished side (outside) doesnt have any cuts seen.

I would make the removable part very thin layer of epoxy with some tiny clips to the inside to be attached to the wood. To keep the balance in the lamp, I would add some iron from the inside front of the concrete to keep it balanced instead of adding extra wood and changing my design. Good job, I’ll use this idea in different design, as I’ll make it as a bar drop light (no concrete needed). Thanks for sharing.

One thing I would have done slightly different is to leave a piece of tubing inside the concrete mold so the wiring remains completely invisible. You could even leave an opening to the upper part of the base to place the on/off switch, that would be neat!

Thanks Michael! I might, but also might use clear silicon tube. It was pretty simple to use, and if I hadn't overshot my channel width at the table saw, it probably would have looked pretty clean with clear epoxy over it (which would have simplified it a bit).

What did you use to fill the small holes in the cement after it was done?

Nothing....the GFRC was pretty darn smooth out of the form

@@modustrial if that happens, how does one finish it? Also , will the holes on the wood be enough to keep led from heating up ?

Google plus? That's still a thing? Awesome lamp, Mike! The shape of the base, and the cantilevered design give it a sleek modern vibe. Tons of great tips for using epoxy & LED's too.

Hi can you make videos of projects with limited tools. Say circular saw, jigsaw and other hand tools. In that way, it becomes more accessible for other people with limited tools to recreate it !
Thanks for sharing this. I enjoyed watching the making
