Hey Daniel! You asked..... I volunteer as a photographer for a non-profit organization that works with kids who are burn survivors. After a year of photographing for them, and logging well over 15,000 shutter clicks, I've been told by the management that they like the way I isolate the kids faces and really capture the emotion of what the person is experiencing in that moment. I truly love photographing people while connecting with them, so that gives me a strong indication of where my photography will be going. I returned to photography 6 years ago after a 10 year hiatus. I started out as a wedding photographer back in the late 1990's, and did everything about running the business wrong. I got massively burned out, and quit. If you want to know what NOT to do while running a photography business, I can talk to you all day about that. As I prepare for the next stage of where this journey takes me, and hopefully a new career, I am eternally grateful for the training and education from and so many people like you, Seth, Joe, Gavin, Vanessa, and SO many others who are affiliated with Adorama. We live in a time where there are no excuses for not learning this craft and the business that goes along with it. Thanks for posting!
You pointed out key factors. Some may not apply to me, but I will say the importance of having a niche is dead on. I’m still working on it. It can be overwhelming, not only to discover a niche, but to present it to those who would benefit from it

I'm still struggling to get paying clients. I had no trouble getting model call clients for the pet photography course I was taking. I had more people interested than my assignments but everyone loves free. I've only been at this for about 2 years. I don't know. I'm getting discouraged. I've done all the things you mentioned. You and Seth know my niche 🙂 I'm just having difficulty finding those paying clients. And yes, right now, I'm very discouraged.
Have you tried making contact with Breeders or pet stores? People that will pay for a pet might be more likely to pay for a photo. I definitely know it can be discouraging
Great video! I used to work in PR and advertising and was in charge of booking photographers and supervising shoots. This has great insights into the client wants and needs - especially about wanting to get out of the office to hang out with the cool kids at the shoot! 😊
This is a another home run video Daniel - I am really looking forward to the series of deep dives. I would be interested in knowing how you avoid your portfolio becoming too narrowly focused (by laser focusing on a niche) when you’re still learning about all the different styles you might be interested in. Do I have to greater some other “lab” / “studio” “alter ego” account where I experiment…?

I have been in the professional audio industry designing and selling sound systems for the live sound industry the past 50 years. Well I will be retiring in 2 months and I am looking forward to getting back into photography. I started way back learning with with my Nikon F4 during the film days. Over the past years I have been slowly building up my digital camera gear. I recently just found your channel and I couldn't subscribe fast enough!! I have been learning so much from you on all your videos. I love the way your teach, thank you so much for sharing all of your knowledge! All the best to you!
Thanks for great info, . This year I`ve decided to go full time freelance photographer. I have been shooting for around 46 years and 2010 decided to charge for for my services . Wedding , family and headshot images . I find that as I`m a people person ,weddings and getting people to relax are easy to capture , headshots and studio work are what I love to capture. I'm really going to struggle with my niche . So now I`m looking forward to going through my work and hone my niche . PS would like more video's covering this topic . thanks again .. Itis OK to talk about niche. But I live in Darwin Australia. Very remote, population including surrounding rural areas of around 150 thousand. Darwin is closer to Dili, Denpasar and Jakarta in Indonesia and Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea than it is to any other Australian capital city (Not many actors looking for head shots). We do Wedding, Events and Family. I have also done Commercial, Car, Yachts and Corporate Head shots. I also enjoy covering Motor Cross for two local clubs. Hard to target a niche and get regular work.

I couldn't see not including the files in some format. That would be like getting your fim developed, and not receiving the negatives. To me it would be part of the purchase as you're also giving them the rights to reproduce those pictures. Knowing when to keep your artistic rights and when to sell or share them is important. Good stuff as always Daniel. Have you or Adorama done a video on photo contracts? Can't remember if I already searched that. My father was a lithoghapher who sold wedding invitations on the side. He nurtured those relationships so much, he sometimes sold to third generations of families.
Great video as always. What if what I love to do is landscapes and nature rather than portraits. Do the same principals apply in those genres? Do companies or individuals seek out landscape photographers or is it more about selling prints and stock photography and that sort of thing?

That is, what do you think about the tasks he should/shouldn´t take or help with. When is advised to have one and, what part of the budget is fair to share with him during the session. Thank you again for videos like this one, they are really valuable for me.
Is it important to supply a written licence with any digital files delivered to a retail photography client? I think for digital if there isn't a written licence then there must be an implicit license since it's basically impossible to make use of a digital photo without making a copy of it. Some clients might prefer a written licence that tells them more exactly what's OK to do with the photo and what isn't. I guess same for prints except in that case there's probably no implicit license, they can simply view or display the prints without copying.
Daniel, I love your poodcasts, with Adorama and others... but what $500 for an individual headshot in high school you talking about? What $100K for a catalog? Where are the prices like this exist?? I am an engeneer at Ford Motor Co. as my current profession for last 30 years and I am starting to think - I am in the seriously wrong business...
