The biggest mistake that directors and studio CEOs made from the very beginning of Uzumaki was trying to adapt the entirety of the book in just one season, even if it was planned for 12 episodes.
@ibrahimihsan2090 32 pages average with 20 chapter. Some of them are kinda long though because of the dialogue but I think 20 ep could be enough but I haven't watch it yet to know the pacing
No, they are super short, and thats what makes it hard to adapt to tv. The uzumaki manga is almost a collection of short stories, each one of them involving around different monsters and characters, wich will all build up to the last chapters that follows a continuous narrative instead of the short stories format
It's not a mistake at all, it's only 19 chapters, and four-five episodes is totally doable. No idea why you're trying to push the idea it's some impossible feat that needs twenty seasons.
well its not the best adaptation of his work, they made a few live action movies that are pretty good. This sadly probably is the best anime adaptation, though there was the tomie one-shot anime that was the 1st couple chapters. Though i think that was a fan project.

As someone who hadn't read the manga, I left episode 1 genuinely excited for what was to come. I can't name any horror anime I've seen off the top of my head, but no anime has unnerved me quite like this one. The only thing I got out of episode 2 was seeing the guy become a snail and going "YO IT'S LIKE SPONGEBOB"
The black and white choice wasnt the greatest tbh , they even had some color pages on the manga , and if you want black and white anime its not hard to turn it yourself black and white with software , must be a cheap lazy excuse to put more bucks under the desk imo
Yeah but Gundam Unicorn was originally a short ova series with only 7 episodes and the animation is still peak even to this day. It has beautiful art work and animation. The story to Gundam Unicorn is pretty good too. And if you watched the original Gundam Anime series you appreciate it even more since it connects to other Gundam series. It's not impossible to make a short episode count work for a Anime or Anime adaption .But somehow they messed up even worse . They could have theoretically pulled off a Gundam Unicorn in terms of quality for Uzumaki. I can't believe they massacred my boy . Why can't we just get one good Anime adaption of Junji Ito's works? th-cam.com/video/aISRl89gD5M/w-d-xo.htmlsi=LwBbvL5HU-jO6I5C
My guess is they ran out of money, or the backers left. A large chunk of the investment went to the first episode. The suits heading the projects said fuckit, send it off to a cheap anime studio and just get it done. Maybe we can recoup on part of the investment.
So from what I have read it was basically this but worse. The studio was given 3 option, cancel all of it, finish episode 1 then cancel it or finish episode 1 then outsource. This is what happened and it's not the creators or the original studios fault. At least we still are getting the show. Your correct though this indeed did happen.
@ManOfPillowDoom Yeah it is. Like once I found out I'm just glad we are still getting it as that was the best option. It makes sense why it took so long.
The only anime that I know of that took several years and it actually feels like they took their time to make it good is redline and it took the studio 7 years to make it it it looks beautiful
For me the biggest gripe I have with this adaptation is the how insanely fast based it is! What make me enjoy reading the manga so much was how slowly the dread of the spiral was building up to the end!
I prefer the original artstyle to Ranma 1/2 to be honest. The new designs for the new Ranma 1/2 don't look bad per say but they look too flat and simplistic. The original Anime adaption was more detailed in my opinion. I prefer the old Anime . But I'll look into watching the new soon.
@foregroundeclipse8725 The new one is FAR superior, in my opinion, not only in animation but in its vibrant colors, smooth fight choreography, and even its clever use of onomatopoeias. The first series was great, but this new series was clearly done with love and care, and it shows
It being only 4 episodes is actually crazy to me, because now they've rushed literally everything and that ain't right. I cannot tell you how many times I've genuinely shouted in pure confusion because I'm watching episode 2, and they're cramming in like 4-5 different Uzumaki chapters. It's literally the most jarring shit ever, no time for any of the horror of these chapter adaptations to even breathe or marinate for one second, it's literally just, "OKAY WE GOT THE SNAIL PEOPLE RIGHT OVER HERE AND OH HERE'S KIRIE HAVING HER HAIR BATTLE BUT ALSO CHECK OUT THE KIDS WHO GOT BURNT ALIVE IN THE LIGHTHOUSE OH AND DID I MENTION SHUICHI'S MOM IS GOING INSANE IN THE HOSPITAL", like dawg what's the point in rushing all of this.
First episode being PEAK while the next episode goes to garbage? Reminds me of The Detective is Already Dead. I hated that anime down to my guts and bones because the quality I thought I was promised with was just gone right after the first premiere.
Quite the interesting decision how they would immediately cut off the main director entirely. Even if a studio does outsource fheir animators no matter how horrendously bad it is, it has been proven it can absolutely still be good as long as the directors actually give proper directions like David Production's works like Jojo's Bizarre Adventure and Fire Force, as well as Kobayashi-san's Maid Dragon iinw. All the quality would just be lost without the vision.
adult swim releasing anime series to be mid is what baffle me. uzumaki being hype up over how many years now? I'm looking forward to it too. episode 1 is a banger. but episode 2 is sh*t. ninja kamui, rick and morty, and uzumaki. it's all disappointing
My current feeling is that this is the classic story of a director that got way too ambitious and probably burned through most of the budget and time with very little to show for it and the production team was left scrambling to quickly finish the show with whatever they had left so they had something to give to the studio. Thus the outsourcing of outsourcing that was probably done on a short deadline
After watching some clips from the 2nd episode (cus hell no i ain't watchin the full eps) i noticed that it is fully 2d animated? Like all the charm and uncanny vibe of rotoscope from eps 1 was gone and it just became this empty husk being puppeted. This really hurts me man as i've been waiting for this AS adaptation for years 😢
I just don’t understand how nearly all of these comments are “OMG!!Z How did this go from AMAZING to GARBAGE in one episode?’?!” Bc like it really wasn’t that bad when I watched ep 2-3. Sure the animation was choppy at times but I don’t understand how it has to be absolutely perfect for people to enjoy it, even after the entire animation team and main producer got replaced. Yes, I have read the original manga, and yes, the adaptations pacing is a bit fast compared to it, but it’s still a very fun series that has me anticipating the finale.
Tangential here, but it’s amazing how far rotoscoping animation has come, like the first episode of this and Garouden on Netflix. I always wrote it off as weird, but it’s getting a heck of a lot better, it’s exciting!
Junji Ito deserves better. But at least we know a proper adaptation of his work CAN be done. It just needs the right people working behind it, enough time, and a big enough budget. Maybe one day…. 😔
The animation really went from Frank Ocean's Blonde Album to "From the screen 📺 to the ring 🥊 to the pen 🖊 to the king 👑! Where’s my crown 👑 🤷♂ that’s my bling 💍 🤑 always trouble 😈 when I ring 📞"
A bit off topic here, but that thumbnail threw me off for a sec. Why does the guy all the way on the right look like a Japanese Dale Dribble without a hat? LMFAO 🤣
I COULD most likely bet this: they practically lost juice for the next thing and now need to snap up ideas to make things diffrent now. This isn't to mention that the animators most likely died off or had even left because of this timeframe. So it could just be time itself at fault.
I remember seeing a teaser a few years ago where the studio was reassuring us that work was indeed being done on this project. It might have been 10-20 seconds of footage and it was simply a wordless scene of Kirie walking down a hill. Her walk animation was meticulous . Everything was moving, her hair, her legs, the pleats on her clothing. It was wondrously intricate and obviously unnecessary. Even at that point, I had this sense that this production was suffering from Richard Williams syndrome. "If it can be animated, it will be, regardless of how difficult or unnecessary it is.” The problem with that kind of plan on an ambitious project is that eventually you run out of time, budget, personnel, patience and then life happens.
I couldnt believe myself when I watched the second episode lmao in the first trailers that featured multiple parts like the one where the mother of one of the protagonists was going crazy over that particular organ inside her head was giving me the vibes about this quality drop at some point honestly, but concidering how GOOD was the first episode (wich really hooked me into the show and the idea of Junji ito finally getting a good adaptation of one of his best works), I didn't really thought of it being something to be concern about, but Jesus, look how they massacred my boy... 😭 Hopefully one of the future episodes maintain a quality close to the first one
As Chie walks on the road with Mitsuo in her arms asleep she hears a boat horn at the shoreline and starts to run to it and as she gets to the beach she sees a navy patrol boat going by looking for survivors from the town, she puts down Mitsuo and starts shouting too it hoping they will see them, the captain of the boat looks thru his binoculars and sees her calling out to them and orders the boat to stop and pick them up. Chie tries to catch her breath to tell the captain of what happened to the town’s people and that no more rescue attempts be made looking in an empty town and as the boat drives closer to the town Chie screams at the captain to not go near it or they’ll all die then a whirlpool starts to form in front of the boat then the captain forces a hard left turn from the town away from it and saves everyone aboard. Relieved to survive it the captain orders the rescue boat to drive to the next port away from the town and as they pass the dark lighthouse, Mitsuo starts to wake up without everyone noticing and as he looks around he’s confused of where he is and who he is, then he looks up at the lighthouse and sees a pretty girl with wavy curly hair standing on the railing of the tower. Mitsuo is confused because he recognizes her face but can’t remember a name, so he stares at her till the rescue boat starts to go farther away from the town. On the lighthouse stands Kirie watching her little brother get away from the reach of the spiral's cruse, so she blows a kiss goodbye to him knowing he’ll be alive and safe far away and as the sun starts to go down, she says goodbye without saying a word before the cursed lighthouse turns on and in a flash of light in the darkness she disappears. As the bright light from the lighthouse spins around flashing the light on then off the spiral cursed town the view begins to enclose on the center of the tomb to the spiral pod in the darkness where all the town’s people’s faces lay quietly in the dark of the underground tomb and within the pod of the spiral Kirie lays in front of the spiraling light. Naked and floating in its center Kirie sleeps soundly with tears dripping out of her eyes as she smiles with her curly hair flying around her face, the spiral calls out to her in a smoothing calm voice. SPIRAL: KIRIE KIRIE: YES SPIRAL: ARE YOU PLEASED KIRIE: YES, THANK YOU, THANK YOU VERY MUCH FROM MY HEART SPIRAL: KIRIE PLEASE, SING ME A SONG, SING SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL KIRIE: I KNOW JUST WHAT TO SING Kirie closes her eyes and sings KIRIE: DOUJOU-JI DOUJOU-JI ALL DRIED UP DOUJOU-JI DOUJOU-JI A SPIRAL SWIRLS ABOVE A SPIRAL SWIRLS BELOW BEANEATH THE POND OF THE DRAGONFLY GO DOWN THE STAIRS AND COMPLETE THE CYCLE ALL DRIED UP DOUJOU-JI DOUJOU-JI SPIRAL: BEAUTIFUL YOUR SO BEAUTIFUL The spirit of the spiral creates brighter spirals around Kirie’s body as she sleeps then turns them into spinning flowers. As Kirie starts to dream she can smell something sweet as she thinks she is laying in a flower field with the sun in her face and makes heavenly smile SPIRAL: SLEEP MY BEAUTIFUL KIRIE The view starts to move away as Kirie's song echoes within it from Kirie’s floating body to the dark tomb outside the pod to the dark underground stairway going up to outside the spiral made town as the view rises upwards into the heavens where you can only see a piece of land in Japan shaped like a spiral. The spiral shaped town slowly fades away into a spiral shaped flower from the mountain side and there sitting next to it is Kirie’s spirt Kirie's spirit after many years within the spiral watches over her peaceful hometown and wonders like a ghost as she nears the end of telling the story of her fate and the fate of the town. She sits watching on the hillside with her curly long hair dancing in the windy breeze remembering everyone in her past life until the embodiment of the spirals curse as a person with a familiar face starts walking into town. Kirie looks at her face and is shocked when the curse looks back at her with a spiral in her face smiles and Kirie knows that the horror will start all over again for the next generation of this town. As the spirit walks away from her Kirie watches as her hair starts dancing up and down like it has a reaction of its own of what's to come then the screen closes to her face as she looks at you (the viewer) and she speaks (KIRIE)- NOW YOU KNOW MY STORY AND THE TRUTH OF OUR FATE, SO COME JOIN US IN THE UZUMAKI She looks at you with a sad smile and look as her spiraling hair slowly covers the screen, her left eye becoming the center of the spiral as it takes over the screen making you see nothing but the spiral as you go mad (crazy)
Episode 2 had the fluidity of an average Queen Bee episode I ain't even surprised at that point with the hentai animators 😂 Didn't even bother to get the good ones
One technique Junji Ito uses in manga is what I like to call the page turner jump scare. A character will see something gross but you as the reader need to physically turn the page so you're thinking "Oh no what horrors await me on the next page" and then you turn the page and bam, someone's rolled their tongue around like a fruit winder in full page, and it hits you immediately. It's like a jumpscare but without noise, I think its genius. You lose that in animation. Sure its still disturbing but you see it coming. Its not like you turn a page and just have it instantly thrown in your face like the manga does. And that's why horror anime is so difficult to get right I think.
Take the twitter screenshot with a grain of salt, it seems to be pure speculation. But it's clear that something went wrong with the production, super disappointing

OMG I forgot about that!!! xDDDDDDDDDDDDD
...Also it's like JoJo. And I just realized 🏳🌈🐌can be both a JoJo AND a Junji Ito reference!
They put entire budget in ep 1
When you realize its just 4 episode .
Also no need to colour it.
And still fumbled.
The black and white choice wasnt the greatest tbh , they even had some color pages on the manga , and if you want black and white anime its not hard to turn it yourself black and white with software , must be a cheap lazy excuse to put more bucks under the desk imo
Hell, Adult Swim had money on it.
Adult Swim could save tbh, but the entire production management is probably from production I.G USA
why do swimming adults have money in them, that's soggy money, soggy moneys
Can’t we just have one good junji ito anime
No, you only get one good episode. Just like how Berserk only has good adaptations for the Golden Age. T_T
I'm glad that I wasn't the only person who thought the animation dropped to shit in the nest episode
I didn't like some of the shots but overall it was still effective.
@@ibrahimihsan2090shit was not effective bruh, it's Junji Ito.
@@LEYTHLEGACY Read my older comments.
ngl the second i started seeing everyone gas it up from the first episode i got this feeling of dread like something was gonna go horribly wrong
Let's just pretend it ended at episode 1.
Uzumaki is my favorite 1 episode series. The 1 episode that exists is really good.
Ninja Kamui: Allow me to introduce myself
😭😂😭😂😂😂😂😂😂typical adult swim shit the quality good then nosedive off a Cliff
Atleast that had like 3 solid episodes
It was half good atleast

What happened with Ninja Kamui?
Uzumaki has only one episode. Those 3 are filler.
The average isekai has pretty mid animation, but from what you showed this animation isn’t mid, it’s straight dookie.
@@Quinnsula5 That's depressing as hell
@ManOfPillowDoom Yeah it is. Like once I found out I'm just glad we are still getting it as that was the best option. It makes sense why it took so long.
Does anyone know why this happened though? Why did they leave? Wasn't it popular enough?
brother in 2024 we got the best budget for the worst shit and the worst budget for the best shit.
The only anime that I know of that took several years and it actually feels like they took their time to make it good is redline and it took the studio 7 years to make it it it looks beautiful
And it bankrupt the studio 😅
@@lovelessshoot883 worth it tho
Thanks for introducing me to redline. I hope that movie was very successful, considering it bankrupted a studio
@@Bullboy_Adventures it’s my favorite anime movie and I wish more were like it
aot season 2
it's like a scam, first episode so good, then, 2nd episode becomes a trash
I prefer "average Isekai whatever" over that second episode of Uzumaki.
We waited 5 years for this.
I just fel I just felt so disappointed that I don't even know what to write
For me the biggest gripe I have with this adaptation is the how insanely fast based it is! What make me enjoy reading the manga so much was how slowly the dread of the spiral was building up to the end!
Literally "The" Sponge Bob meme
Oh well, at least we still got Dandadan and Ranma 1/2, which are both fantastic!! Ironically, both are on Netflix
The first series was great, but this new series was clearly done with love and care, and it shows
Fr especially Dandadan 😢
this comment made me run to netflix super happy to finally start watching dandadan. surprise, it’s not available in my country!
@@foregroundeclipse8725 same i liked the girl with red hair instead of pink it just looks edible now, i dont like it
Uzumaki epsiode 1 is one of those short animations you can go back to and watch every now and then. It is really good.
They put so much effort in the first episode then just got lazy after whoever was in charge got kicked out.
I'm glad I wasn't hallucinating the rotoscoping because I noticed it missing the second episode and wondered if it was a dream
5 Years for 4 Episode...
you can be honest bro it looks like queen bee 😭
Queen bee as in the hentai channel?
@@casinopurposeQueen bee as in the hentai channel.
At least it's better than boruto
Fair enough
First episode being PEAK while the next episode goes to garbage?
Reminds me of The Detective is Already Dead. I hated that anime down to my guts and bones because the quality I thought I was promised with was just gone right after the first premiere.
queen bee done animated the second episode ong😭😭🙏
"I would even prefer poro/nur"
Bro they had 5 years
Quite the interesting decision how they would immediately cut off the main director entirely.
For a horror series that was so popular they sure didn't give a shit when they adapted
I was supposed to see the best hair battle.😭
berserk and junji ito is two things that i never expect too much on animes.
Junji Ito should sue their ass to oblivion for ruining his reputation.
They kicked out the director, and replaced him with a director who was BLACKLISTED? what were they thinking???
This anime is the definition of “WE WERE ALL ROOTING FOR YOU”
I already knew this would flop. Studio Drive were the same ones that gave "To Your Eternity" a disappointing season 2.
Is it still a good anime tho? (No spoilers)
huh/. i thought season 2 was great though
@@brandonwithnell612 I thought One Punch Man season 2 was awesome personally, so I understand that feeling. :/
It’s still good but that’s because the source material is good. The animation isn’t horrible or anything but definitely a downgrade
Studio Drive isn't even listed as the animation studio anymore, they changed Studio mid production or something
As an animator, thats just unacceptable, even i who am a single person would never put out something like that
The production sounds like a horror story
The higher ups on the studio just murdered the rotoscope team in cold blood.
They probably hired Queen Bee animators for episode 2 or some shit like that.
well at least we were blessed with the episode 1 😭
adult swim releasing anime series to be mid is what baffle me. uzumaki being hype up over how many years now? I'm looking forward to it too. episode 1 is a banger. but episode 2 is sh*t. ninja kamui, rick and morty, and uzumaki. it's all disappointing
i almost laughed when i saw them running, looks so goofy.
Not even Ninja Kamui had its downfall like this bro...😂😂
Dude that show was hype for the 6 episode that it was good
when your mission is to make your assignment cover page as good as possible because you want to pass and the rest of the project is dog- ahhh moment:
We waited five years for THIS!?
Uzumaki 🤝 Blue Lock Season 2
My current feeling is that this is the classic story of a director that got way too ambitious and probably burned through most of the budget and time with very little to show for it and the production team was left scrambling to quickly finish the show with whatever they had left so they had something to give to the studio. Thus the outsourcing of outsourcing that was probably done on a short deadline
After watching some clips from the 2nd episode (cus hell no i ain't watchin the full eps) i noticed that it is fully 2d animated? Like all the charm and uncanny vibe of rotoscope from eps 1 was gone and it just became this empty husk being puppeted. This really hurts me man as i've been waiting for this AS adaptation for years 😢
greatest drop offs in 1 season. uzumaki ep 1 --> 2 and blue lock s1 --> s2
the art style is something that simply just can’t be replicated. Unfortunate that a project like this wasn’t given serious attention.
First Berserk got cursed and now Uzumaki...
prob didn't take 5 years, most time prob went to finding staff, that's production issues smh
oh for crying out loud....... and here I was thinking episode 2 was just gonna be a bump on the road
Nah...I'll just pretend like Uzumaki anime was never released
That would mean it got better
That's the actual horror all along adapting a Junji Ito manga into an anime. Its like nightmare horror level for animators
5/nearly 6 years for this... im not even mad im depressed.
This is just sad asf.
Seven years and you have something timeless like Redline.
A bit off topic here, but that thumbnail threw me off for a sec. Why does the guy all the way on the right look like a Japanese Dale Dribble without a hat? LMFAO 🤣
Another banger video from arikendo
I COULD most likely bet this: they practically lost juice for the next thing and now need to snap up ideas to make things diffrent now.
This isn't to mention that the animators most likely died off or had even left because of this timeframe.
So it could just be time itself at fault.
You need to check out "Aiyou de mishi". It's thriller that produces fantastic atomisphere.
i think a motion comic like The Way of the Househusband might be the best way to adapt Junji Ito's work...
The staff released their powerpoint presentation instead of the anime
I couldnt believe myself when I watched the second episode lmao
in the first trailers that featured multiple parts like the one where the mother of one of the protagonists was going crazy over that particular organ inside her head was giving me the vibes about this quality drop at some point honestly, but concidering how GOOD was the first episode (wich really hooked me into the show and the idea of Junji ito finally getting a good adaptation of one of his best works), I didn't really thought of it being something to be concern about, but Jesus, look how they massacred my boy... 😭
Hopefully one of the future episodes maintain a quality close to the first one
SPIRAL: KIRIE
KIRIE: YES
SPIRAL: ARE YOU PLEASED
KIRIE: YES, THANK YOU, THANK YOU VERY MUCH FROM MY HEART
SPIRAL: KIRIE PLEASE, SING ME A SONG, SING SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL
KIRIE: I KNOW JUST WHAT TO SING
Kirie closes her eyes and sings
KIRIE:
DOUJOU-JI DOUJOU-JI
ALL DRIED UP
DOUJOU-JI DOUJOU-JI
A SPIRAL SWIRLS ABOVE
A SPIRAL SWIRLS BELOW
BEANEATH THE POND OF THE DRAGONFLY
GO DOWN THE STAIRS AND COMPLETE THE CYCLE
ALL DRIED UP
DOUJOU-JI DOUJOU-JI
SPIRAL: BEAUTIFUL YOUR SO BEAUTIFUL
The spirit of the spiral creates brighter spirals around Kirie’s body as she sleeps then turns them into spinning flowers.
As Kirie starts to dream she can smell something sweet as she thinks she is laying in a flower field with the sun in her face and makes heavenly smile
SPIRAL: SLEEP MY BEAUTIFUL KIRIE
The view starts to move away as Kirie's song echoes within it from Kirie’s floating body to the dark tomb outside the pod to the dark underground stairway going up to outside the spiral made town as the view rises upwards into the heavens where you can only see a piece of land in Japan shaped like a spiral.
The spiral shaped town slowly fades away into a spiral shaped flower from the mountain side and there sitting next to it is Kirie’s spirt
Kirie's spirit after many years within the spiral watches over her peaceful hometown and wonders like a ghost as she nears the end of telling the story of her fate and the fate of the town.
As the spirit walks away from her Kirie watches as her hair starts dancing up and down like it has a reaction of its own of what's to come then the screen closes to her face as she looks at you (the viewer) and she speaks
(KIRIE)- NOW YOU KNOW MY STORY AND THE TRUTH OF OUR FATE, SO COME JOIN US IN THE UZUMAKI
She looks at you with a sad smile and look as her spiraling hair slowly covers the screen, her left eye becoming the center of the spiral as it takes over the screen making you see nothing but the spiral as you go mad (crazy)
Episode 2 had the fluidity of an average Queen Bee episode I ain't even surprised at that point with the hentai animators 😂 Didn't even bother to get the good ones
And thus it ends, not with a bang, but a whimper.
And so, dusk maiden of amnesia remains the best horror anime yet
