I personally thought the Americanized names in the original 90's dub were actually pretty well thought out; Serena is a variant on Selena, which is a Greek name meaning "Moon". Makoto became Lita which is an alternate spelling of Leda, one of Jupiter's moons. Ami is Amy, Rei is Rae, Minako is Mina... they weren't picked arbitrarily, which I appreciate.
Rei's grandfather isn't perverted at all in the manga oddly enough. In fact, he was quite wise and reasonable and basically raised Rei in place of her father who was busy with politics. He even gives good advice to Rei!
The manga was bad compared to the anime, my sister bought it back in the 90s here in Italy and I was disappointed that practically every comical scenes were nonexistent there.
@@feroce82 To me is the other way round, I prefer the manga, the characters in the anime are really silly and childish. I also deeply hate how Rei's personality changed.
I didn't buy the cousin's cover story for a second and I barely watched the show back in the day and I was only around 5 or 6 at the time so they were only fooling the stupid and or gullible kids at most
I remember a line in the first episode of the last season. Haruka falls of a building and Michiru catches her. She then says something along the line of "you need to cut off those late night snacks" and Haruka responds with "save the pillow talk for when were back in bed". Those are some close cousins. 😂😂
Yeah, I remember another one where Haruka says "Be gentle with me!" and Michiru just goes like "I'm gonna do that when we're home." 😂 honestly given the fact Haruka is the flirty one, it seems like Michiru had all the suggestive lines
another one: in the movie Haruka comments the enemy's plan is to make all children sleep, and Michiru says like "that would be a shame, because there're so many fun things only adults can do" looking at Haruka and she blushes 😂
With Uranus and Neptune it’s easy to see what we want to see. This is what I love this couple. No way for homophobic stuff ! But as hetero it pleases me to see Haruka like the three lights. Which are men and women after the make up 😊
The dub trying to cover Usagi getting drunk at the party by having her drink "juice" will never not be hilarious to me, that whole sequence in the original is GOLD. Her spouting off a pudding recipe & the guy thinking its some metaphor for physics or something while Ami & Mamoru panic 😂😂😂
I watched this in Romania, including season 5, 25 years ago. Nothing was censored and we all had A LOT of questions. 😃 Kudos to the Sailor Moon team for the representation.
Some things were censored. But definitely not replacing "warriors" with "scouts", that's just silly. And, while Haruka and Michiru were not explicitly stated to be together, they weren't turned into cousins either...cause that just implied incest and so made the whole thing even more creepy. Americans are dum prudes...
@@anabarbulescu4043 I watched it with Italian dubbing first too: Jadeite had a woman’s voice. When the show came to TVR, all the voices were the original ones and you could hear that he was actually a man.
Over 30 YEARS OF the entire ‘Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon’ franchise. Congratulations to the manga creator Naoko Takeuchi plus the entire voice cast and crew from TOEI Animation.
Over 30? It came out in 1992-1997 more like it’s been 30 with the way it came out in North America many states didn’t get it added to Toonami lineup until 94-95
I'm still very happy and relieved that Viz Media bought rights to Sailor Moon in 2014 and restore the original series back to its original glorious glory of being true to the anime and manga the way Naoko Takeuchi made it to be. I did grew up watching Sailor Moon from the DiC/ Cloverway version as a kid until I finally realized the show's true origins and I preferred the original anime than the North American versions. Sailor Moon in Viz Media style ultimately won my heart as the show was finally uncut, gave everyone their respective statuses, storylines, attacks, transformations as well as romance statuses etc back again, finally introducing Sailor Stars and the voice actors and actresses for the 2014 version portraying the characters so perfectly and well!!!! Thank you Viz Media for saving Sailor Moon, and congrats to Sailor Moon on its 30th Anniversary!!!! In the name of the Moon, it's forever and always number 1!!!!
Well they revised it again, what with crystal, eternal coming out in movie form, AAA well as stars, which was renamed. Sadly they didn’t make sailor stars the equivalent to how it is in the manga. Which made me sad. I was kind of hoping that you the anime’s that came post crystal, would remain true to what you see in the manga, but they didn’t. Which made me really sad, and bummed out. Will we ever get those arcs ever get the same treatment as crystal did?
I'm glad, that the German version was much, much closer to the original Japanese one. They did change some things, but those changes were minor. Usagi was names Bunny, which is the literal translation of her name, the others kept the name. No switching of genders, all the LGBT+ stuff stayed. And the first season was even aired on the equivalent of PBS.
But Zoisite was made male, and they tried for Fish Eye, but since he was shirtless in one episode, it was clear that he'sa guy. but yeah, sailor uranus and neptune were not censored, not the Star Lights
@@HIMzone666returns I remember how confused I was as a kid about Zoisite and FishEye. On the first glance I thought they where woman but got confused during the seasons.
Well, not completely true. I did a re-run with the German dub of the whole show and I have noticed some things: Genders have been switched - Zoisite has been called as gender pronoun "sie" (she), while Fisheye was confusing, as in some episodes they called her pronoun "she" and sometimes "he". Haruka's and Michiru's flirty dialogues have also been dumbed down sometimes in comparison with the new english dub or original japanese dub. The only thing they didn't change were the starlights I think. The german dub is one of the better ones for sure (especially season 1) but they had some dialogue errors in season 2 - 5. (example, calling Usagi rarely "Usagi" instead of Bunny)
Germany is chad amongst anime localizations. Many animes are as faithful as possible, while English virgin dubs always censors everything. I mean, I understand brutality, sexuality or alcohol. But English dubs tend to modify the thing totally for no reason. Sometimes making deep bonds and relationships flat. And characters with great personality are dull.
I'm surprised you didn't mention the censorship of Serena and Darien's kiss when Rini first appears. In the English dub, they talk about how their lips are stuck together because of Serena's chewing gum 😂
"Sereana?" "Mmmmm yes love muffin?" "Have you been eating that sticky caramel bubble gum again?" "mmmm yes why?" "my lips are stuck, that stuff is worse than cement"
@@FlareboxxThe voice acting? Seriously? Usagi's speaker (I'll ignore the ugly Serena) is horrible. I remember the scene where Usagi finds out Mamoru is Tuxedo Mask. "He's Tuxedo Mask, I can't believe it." The sentence was completely emotionless and that's how she always speaks. What DIC did to Sailor Moon is terrible. Just the background music for her first transformation, the Japanese one is epic, the DIC one is boring and cheaply done. DIC turned a masterpiece into something mediocre
In Japan, some personal matters like gays and lesbians are considered to be mostly personal matters. Still Japan is a little more open to Lesbians and Gays as long as the keep their relationships personal. Micahru's and Haruka's relationship was treated well in the original Japanese series. Making them cousins was crazy because the two seem to be committing Incest. Yet many of the older viewers were well aware of the Cousins' relationship was more than a case of the Kissing Cousins.
I watched this when I was in elementary school. I honestly never thought anything of it and when I got older did some research into Sailor Moon and was not in the least bit surprised that Neptune and Uranus were a couple and not cousins.
I agree. While the Cloverway dub was back when the U.S. saw gay as not okay, it should have done a better job with writing, as some of the dialogue basically makes it clear they are cousins who are into incest.
Are we not going to talk about chibi-usa’s weird obsession with her own dad sexually in the original? Or the fact that usagi had a thing with uranus for a longtime.
Chibi-Usa's thing with Mamoru was weird, but Usagi thought Haruka was a man until she revealed herself to be Sailor Uranus. "Haruka" is a unisex name, which added to Usagi's confusion.
That's true, but I think Chibi-Usa wasn't aware (at first might I add) that Mamoru was her dad. So it's still plausible that she tried to "hit on" Mamoru. He is quite the fine lad ;) But it got weird after finding out that Mamoru was indeed Chibi-Usa's dad. That was quite the show and very weird. Also Bunny competing with Chibi-Usa for Mamoru's love and attention was quite funny but disturbing non the less, especially after finding out that they're all connected. I would have fallen for Haruka, too! Also Seiya was quite the fine "lad" but it destroyed my fantasy after he/she transformed and became a woman (so shaming here!)
@@Kleineganz from what I learned in Free! "Haruka" is a not a unisex name, is a female name, it's stated several times in the anime/manga, not that a guy could not have a female name, but it has a feminine overtone. It could mean 遥か"distant" but also 春花, "spring, flower". However! I checked the name of Uranus and it's written in hiragana, not kanji, so yeah, means the author wanted to keep the confusion (remeber, in the manga Neptune states that Uranus is both man and women, both genders which was completed changed in the 90s anime).
Speaking of name changes, Sailor Saturn's civilian name, Hotaru, was the only character whose name wasn't altered in the English dub. Mainly because she had the least screen time, she only appears in about 11 episodes of the entire show.
Technically, Ami was also the same, just with a Westernized spelling and pronunciation; as well as Mina, which was just turned into her complete given name rather than being short for Minako. Then of course, all three cats and most of the villains also kept their original names.
@@Only1Noodle I can't imagine an English dub where her name is Rebecca or Susie. It just seems so weird. They almost named Usagi Victoria in the American reboot and still used that name for the promotional stuff for the anime at one point.
Good thing WatchMojo posted that, and it's the EXPANDED version too! It also gives us the reminder that the Sailor Moon Cosmos movie is coming on June 9(Part 1) and June 30(Part 2) in Japan. Hope this gets a global release soon!
The one about Zoisite and Kunzite is weird bc in the OG manga none of the 4 Generals were gay, they were shown to be in relationships of their own with the Sailor Guardians that protected the Princesses. So they were made gay for the anime then one was gender swapped for the North American version. That's very strange
Plus, the manga Starlights were actually women crossdressing as men in civilian form rather than genderbenders, and it was the original Japanese version of the anime that made the change to censor LGBT+ themes for once. I hear the author was not happy about that.
@@Compucles Yeah, I dont get why that would have been a problem either. They were protecting their identities while looking for their own princess, it makes perfect sense to me. The manga author wasnt happy wth a lot of things in the OG anime, I cant imagine what she must have thought of the localization and censorship going on over here.
Yeah. Zoisite was Princess Mercury's beau. And what makes Sailor Venus' story painful is that unlike the other Sailor Senshi, she remembers her time as Princess Venus, the moon kingdom, and her feelings for Kunzite.
@@dragonrune6800 The sailor Moon channel is only available in the US though. Also it's owned by Paramount which owns Paramount Plus so you'll see some channels like Nick Pluto TV and comedy Central and stuff as well also live news.
I named one of my kids Sarina after the localization of Usagi's name. I know her real name now but having such a pretty name tied to a series I love cemented it into my head as a name I wanted for my own child. The fact that it is an archaic name for Usagi gives it an air of separation from the show as well since most wont make the connection unless told or they watched it when it first aired here! They have long since redubbed the original, with their real names, uncut, along side the creation of "crystal" making the original dub harder to find with its localized names! Not impossible just harder!
I grew up watching the 90s dub with my mom. When I was older I learned about Uranus and Neptune's relationship, I told my mom about it and she said "Yeah, I always thought they were a little too friendly to be cousins."
1:26 I still laugh at the "talent" change in this episode. My best friend and I started using the word talent euphemistically after we learned about this change.
It was never explicitly said in the manga, Naoko Takeuchi just drew a drawing of the generals paired with the senshi for fun but she didn't mean it seriously. The Crystal anime, which follows the manga story almost exactly, does say that the generals and senshi were in love, although I personally don't see it as canon. The difference is that in the manga/crystal anime, the generals were originally soldiers of Prince Endymion (Mamoru's past self) who were brainwashed by Queen Beryl, where in the anime they are merely her minions.
@@supremethunder49 actually, as you get into the ETERNAL manga collection, you find out they other senshi did indeed have a relationship with them. Much like Sailor Venus meeting her love while chasing after Usagi, the others met theirs the same way. Just not at the same time. In the comics Jedite even shows some sort of ‘recognition’ and attraction towards sailor mars.
@@scoobypup01 Huh, I didn’t know that. I have the eternal editions of the Dark Kingdom arc but I need to reread them. Do you know which specific acts some of this is mentioned in?
I’m happy that Viz Media decide to revised the series by releasing every episode uncensored and givin a better English dub that’s faithful to the Japanese script. This was how I got introduced to sailor moon. Seriously, Stephanie Sheh as Usagi was perfect.
The cousin censorship doesn’t always stop the romance showing through, especially when some American states and the U.K. as a whole doesn’t see first cousins as incest and you can even get married 😅
I notice WatchMojo fails to mention this a lot when talking about Sailor Moon. Viz released a new uncut and uncensored English dub that is true to the Japanese version. No name changes or westernization.
I remember being a senior in highschool watching this in 2000 on Cartoon Network's Toonami. Hoping to get the rest of season 4. I knew we would never get season 5... The censorship made me crack up so bad!
As a proud Canadian, I need to point out that the english dubbed version that was referenced here under “americanization” (14:33) where Usagi goes by Serena, was not actually made for all of North America. It was *technically* made for and aired mainly in Canada. I found this out when trying to find it as an adult because I watched that version as a kid and that particular version is notoriously difficult to find on DVD, as there was another english dub of the exact same version with completely different actors and where they use their Japanese names. They are more well known as the Dic dubbed Sailor moon episodes and they are also the ones that feature the “morals” at the end of each episode. ALSO, for those of you who don’t know, all of queen Beryls minions (zoisite, malachite, jadeite etc.) are actually all named after differed minerals. Which probably explains why zoisites spelling was changed.
I thank the American dub for introducing Sailor Moon to me but as I got older I'm glad I re-watched everything in its original format and read the mangas because SOOOO much was cut out and edited together it drove me crazy!
I feel very sorry for the fans of the US version of Sailor Moon. Changed songs, changed names, cut scenes, cropped frames... One of the worst versions.
Nothing to feel sorry about. It made me love anime for the rest of my life. I'm happy they were able to redo it uncut, but the original North American version was my childhood.
#20: Makes a lot of sense. People should be known for their actual talents and not their "assets". #17: I remember Yu-gi-oh doing something similar when two men pointed guns at Kaiba in the original. In the NA release the men used their hands like guns. #11: Much like how the North American translation of Yu-gi-oh created the Shadow Realm. Because "those North American kids can't be exposed to death on a regular basis." #15: Can't have old(er) men hitting on underage girls. Same goes for old(er)women hitting on underage boys. #13: Same thing happened to the North American release of the video game Earthbound. While most parents use it as a disciplinary action on misbehaving children, there are times where it can be seen as excessive violence and physical abuse if taken too far. #10: The small cuts should have been kept in, as many people receive them in everyday activities. Only the more graphic scenes in terms of blood loss should be censored. #9: That's technically assault. Mariko did the same to Akiko in the Girlfriends manga on 2 separate occasions. Also, underage drinking? I know Usagi can disguise herself but she's still 14. #7, #4, #2, and #1: Back then, the heads of North American animation studios weren't willing to accept any identity outside of male and female, heterosexual, or cisgender. Thank god Crystal stayed faithful to the source material about 20 years after the original. #5: Codename Sailor V as a 2-part episode would have given us a proper introduction to Sailor Venus. Also explains why some episodes appeared twice when I watched the original series on TH-cam. Just my thoughts on most of these.
#15: That's funny you should say that, since the show's main romantic couple started off as a man in college dating a 14-year-old girl. (Although, Mamoru was only in high school at the beginning of the original manga.)
It was still crazy to me when I found out the last episode of the first arc was actually a two parter with a bunch of stuff cut from it such as the full scene of each of the Senshi's deaths.
I actually bought the two uncut box sets (Sailor Moon & Sailor Moon R) from my local mall years ago. I had watched the sets and was surprised at how much of the final battle was cut. It's funny because they show the Sailor Scouts spirits at the end of the first part (in the americanized version). But I still was missing the one episode from the Sailor Moon R Season (where Chibi-Usa befriended a dinosaur). Sailor Mars' fight in that battle is one of my top 3 Sailor Moon battles throughout the series. Everyone else was able to defeat at least one of the Doom and Gloom girls. But she was the only one to have defeated 2 of them at the same time.
@@KaraMorassco I bought a bootleg of Stars when I was younger not knowing the difference because I had learned about how it never got localise. I'm getting nostalgic thinking about watching the show every morning before school, not knowing what anime was at all. It was cool learning what I missed when I was older like the cut episodes and altered scenes.
@@kosmosfan01 I had gotten the Stars the same way (from a torrent site that's probably long gone by now- since it was years ago I had found them). And I loved watching it. To this day it's my favorite season of them all.
@@KaraMorassco As soon as I got my copy, I watched all the episodes over a weekend. It was a crazy trip. I got another collection about two years ago with all the subbed episodes for every season. I watched a few from the first up to the first missing episode and it's been a trip because I'm so used to the DiC music which was so catchy.
@@kosmosfan01 I loved both the DIC and the original soundtracks. The DIC had great music choices for the main battles or pivotal moments (Usagi's and Mamoru's Identities revealed to eachother).
when I watched as a kid I went from season 4 in english to sailor stars in japanese and oh boy was I confused on why haruka and michiru were acting like they were in love. A lot of the weird censorship confused the hell out of me more than anything as a kid haha
The episode about weight was cut completely from the original English dub in the 90s. The dub by viz media redid the entires series to proper translations and no censorship.
I much rather enjoyed the original English version. It was hilarious and funny. Not to mention, I can’t get enough of the whole “cousins” trope 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I’m so glad that viz media did a great job with the redub! As someone who grew up with the dic dub now having the viz dub I’m so happy viz did it right
@@AdamAddictL the reason real why people loved the 90s Sailor Moon anime because of the lore behind it. It is also one of the most gorgeous and most beautiful pieces of anime and animation in history.
Also, not so much a "moment," but the way DIC replaced the ENTIRE score. To date, Sailor Moon has one of the best soundtracks of ANY anime.--And yes, I will die on that hill. Sure, the Americanized theme & incidental music was catchy to our ears because, at the time, we didn't know any better. I still remember the shock of coming across RealPlayer clips of the original Japanese anime (yeah, I'm that old) & being absolutely FLOORED by how beautiful the jazzy/disco/orchestral score by Takanori Arisawa was. I felt ROBBED; like DIC really gave us some generic, dollar store bargain bin stuff & said that's Sailor Moon 😕
From what I remember from so long ago, most of the listed points were luckily not a problem in the german version. And while I understand - though not necessarily fully agree with - the desire to downplay the "non-traditional" relationships between some of the characters, the change I found most annoying were the changed character names in the american version, because for many years Sailor Moon was one of the stories I would read tons of fanfictions about (all in english language) and it drove me nuts whenever I came across some otherwise decent to great stories that ruined my enjoyment of reading them by their american authors using the changed names.
Changing Kunzite to Malachite makes some sense, as when they say the two-syllable "Kunzite" in Japanese, it becomes the three-syllable "Kun-zai-tou" Since all the Shitennou are based on names of minerals, it seemed to be an easy fix to use a three-syllable name, in this case "Malachite"
Japanese voice actors and actresses are so good that I haven't watched it dubbed even once, so I didn't know what was changed. I can't even think of anyone other than Kotono Mitsuishi to voice Usagi
I’m glad in our country in the Philippines there wasn’t any censorship as I have noticed, as a kid I never understood the violence much I just kept enjoying watching it, same to my mother who used to be a big fan of the series, but as grown ups of course we understand it now
The ending of the first season was torn apart for the American release yes but I think everyone can agree that 'Carry On' (the song played over the battle with Queen Beryl) absolutely slapped.
Thank you Viz media for the uncensored episodes, all 200 episodes glad i got all the seasons uncut. This wasn't a kids show at all, even when i watch this, there many stuff missing big time.
Whenever anyone calls anime any kind of -ist or -phobic, I always remind them that anime featured wholesome gay romance 20 years before Nickelodeon released TLoK and 30 years before Disney released Strange World.
I watched Sailormoon in the 80s and 90s. It was the original version that was dubbed in Filipino/Tagalog. As far as I can remember, I think the dub stayed as true to the original as possible, including the pronunciation of the names. I got all the "censored" scenes. I thought them quite funny, actually. I did not see anything wrong with them, except maybe for the perverted grandpa. One thing though, I couldn't figure out whether Haruka was a guy or a girl. In the end, I decided that Haruka was a guy in normal mode and a girl in sailor soldier mode, much like the Starlights. I loved Seiya, but only second to Mamoru. The Zoisite and Kunzite love story did make me cry. I thought that it was so sad. I thought Fisheye was funny.
"Three sets of twins that switch out during transformation" omg that is absolutly hilarious, I caaaan't😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 am I glad the german version isn't as bad.
I grew up with the OG viz dub and MAN.... This is one of those things that I"m gonna hold on to. No matter how badly it aged in places, I will never not tear up when I hear "Here I'm standing in the night." or "Deep in my soul, love so strong." ... Gosh I miss being so young and innocent that me and my bestie *actually* debated about the potential identity of the moon princess. Well sure it seemed obvious, BUT....
I did watch the show when the original english dub was out but never ended up seeing all of the episodes. And after watching the newer Viz Media english dub I have to say I prefer that one over the original.
Most of these changes were not in the Mexican dub, as far as I remember Ziocite was changed to a woman but I think that was because the first season dub was based on the concept for the english dub (Hence we also had the same americanized names for the initial cast, tough no episodes were censored, not even the season finale), eventually the dubbing company made their own dub from scratch, all new names like Haruka and Michiru were preserved and no censorship was applied to their relationship (In fact, the dub gets even more overt with their flirting), Fisheye's gender is kept ambiguous but the episode with him as a shirtless boy was aired uncensored and the Starlights were actually given male and female voices for their different forms unlike in the japanese dub in which they always have the same girl voice.
Senshi being changed to "Scout", "odango head" being changed to "meatball head", the names being altered (which is done in a lot of other countries), isn't a censorship issue, it's translation/localization.
In the Swedish version Mamoru would call Usagi by the equivalent to Little Girl, giving the impression that he saw her as a kid which would annoy her since she had a crush on him. Not until many years later knowing what he actually called her, it made more sense that he was just making a reference to her hair.
I saw this in Brazil, I knew the girls were in a relationship, don't remember if they were cousins or not. My mom used to complain about the transformations, by the end of the show we had so many it took like 2 or 3 minutes. The Starlights were to confusing to my 12 year old brain. The last episode with Serena being naked I was like please don't let mom come home now, I will not hear the end of it.
Elas eram um casal no Brasil mesmo :) quer dizer, não havia a menção a elas serem primas :3 e as piadas de uma dando em cima da outra nunca foram censuradas aqui hihi
As someone who grew up with OG sailor moon, I think it's ridiculous that they sensored most of it. Cartoons in the 90s had way more adult themes and still said was for kids.
I grew up with the DIC version but watched the VIZ version a few years ago. It was interesting watching the changes. Even though the VIZ version is the best English dubbed version that I know of, I has nothing on the DIC version's soundtrack. (I still have my cassette).
I was waiting to see this comment. That sound track really did it for me lol. I actually played the songs while watching some of my favorite scenes during the Viz dub
The DiC/CWi days were wild, it makes me happy re-watching these with the Viz redub where everything's intact and a more fitting voicecast, especially with Stephanie Sheh as Usagi and Michelle Ruff and Jonny Yong Bosch for Luna and Artemis. Plus we get episodes that weren't shown on TV in the 90s.
In my childhood I was watching sailor moon in Russian and none of this was censored. Apparently Russia had less censorship in 90s than North America...
i used to watch this at either 5 or 5:30 am on Sunday mornings. It was paired with either Dragonball Z or Samurai Pizza Cats depending on the week. I remember that some of the content that got censored in the episode actually made it into the recap at the ending, most notably one scene where Usagi is babysitting and the baby pees in Tuxedo Mask's face. His little penis was on full display.
Despite whatever edits/censorship/etc, I absolutely LOVE and prefer the original DiC/Cloverway dub. I really don't care what people say, DiC dub for life!!! lol
It was always fun to run into someone that was gay when I grew up and have a chuckle about Amara and Michelle being “cousins.” They weren’t fooling anybody with those lame edits 😂
There are 3 people who exist in this world: People who call her "Serena", people who call her "Usagi", and those people who call her "Bunny" for whatever reason... Also, you gotta appreciate the censors back then thought that to fix a lesbian relationship, all they had to do was turn it into an incestuous lesbian relationship. Boom. Fixed.
Usagi literally means rabbit. It also ties into the moon theme because the Chinese (and later Japanese) describe the dark markings on the near side of the moon as rabbit shaped. They have many myths and stories about the moon-rabbit. Hell, Sun Wukong fights it in 'Journey to the West'.
Used to watch it in the Philippines back when I was young (early 90's). Sailor Moon's name was initially Bunny but was subsequently changed (reverted) to Usagi. It was dubbed in Filipino but everything else was somehow legit (except for some parts). Even the LGBTQ themes were intact, from Fish-eye to Uranus and Saturn.
If we had gotten the 5th season in English in the early 200s; they would have changed the Sailor Starlights to Sextuplets. The Sailor Starlights fought the monsters and enemies while Seiya, Yaten, and Taiki searched for the princess.
I watch the original sailor moon series on Hulu and they kept everything from the version in Japan so I did not have to deal with all of the censorship
It's almost like the NA release was a product of its time, and that despite the cuts and censorship made a metric f-ton of money for the franchise, keeping it alive for the last 30 years.
I have 2 cats. They’re named Luna and Artemis 😀 They’re both female and still hate each other. BTW Artemis is actually the _female_ goddess of the moon and the Greek equivalent of Diana the Roman goddess of the moon.
I have to be honest, Polish version might had sucked a lot due to mistranslation, leading to some hillarious convos or attacks (They literally mistook the "beam" in Venus' "Crescent Beam" attack for "bean" and named the attack "Peas, Beans", ffs 🤦♀) but I'm still shocked how little content was cut. Overall we lost only 3 episodes, 2 being season 1 finale due to way too much violence, and episode 133 because it revolved around a nun and some dialogues making fun of Christianity would likely cause quite a storm here. Still, while they did indeed turn Fish Eye into a girl and only altered Zoisite's line to "I loved you like a brother", they didn't do anything about Haruka and Michiru. Probably because their relationship in the anime was still vague enough that they didn't bother hiding the implications. Also we somehow got season 5 with no censorship. Apparently they wanted not to air the last episode due to Usagi being naked for most of it but they knew the fans would be furious if they had no way of seeing the entire series' conclusion.
Great video list. I seriously was not expecting these censored moments from Sailor Moon. it is a flipping shame about LGBTQ being reassigned relationships because of the market values.
I am absolutly proud of the version of my country, when I see that video. It is over 25 years ago since the first episode was aired and we never had this kind of censore. We always know that Michiru and Haruka were a couple and also the over pairs. I would only say, that I never really thought about Fisheyes gender. The Trio was funny to watch, especially when they started to fight who will go after the "victim". XD I only remember one think say changed and that was Usagis name for most of the time. Yeah, they called her Usagi, but most of the time they called her Bunny, what is the english translation for Usagi.
To be fair, the Senshi getting translated into Scouts could also be a product of lip flaps. Alot of changes in Translation in Anime are due to the lip flaps not matching the direct translated.
They should've kept all the original scenes for "Adult Swim" Sailor Moon is more interesting watching the original as an adult. While as a kid, I thought it was too girly.

Yes the Americanization of some names is one change that was for the best.
Rei's grandfather isn't perverted at all in the manga oddly enough. In fact, he was quite wise and reasonable and basically raised Rei in place of her father who was busy with politics. He even gives good advice to Rei!
Toei staff was Peggy backing off the old perverted man troop that was popular in the 80s and 90s.
yeah, he is a completely different person in the Manga
Good thing they’re republishing it. Including the Sailor V novels which never came originally.
Come on, we all knew Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune’s relationship would be number 1
But they're just friends! 😂
@@infernasno, they‘re girls and they‘re cousins, too! 😂
Even watching this as a kid I knew those two were NOT COUSINS 😂
@@es0516 You are NOT alone on that one! 🤣😂🤣😂
Probalby it was more acceptable for the US-audience that two cousins are flirting with each other than two woemn. What says a lot about USA XD
another one: in the movie Haruka comments the enemy's plan is to make all children sleep, and Michiru says like "that would be a shame, because there're so many fun things only adults can do" looking at Haruka and she blushes 😂
With Uranus and Neptune it’s easy to see what we want to see. This is what I love this couple. No way for homophobic stuff ! But as hetero it pleases me to see Haruka like the three lights. Which are men and women after the make up 😊
My favorite line 😂😂😂
The dub trying to cover Usagi getting drunk at the party by having her drink "juice" will never not be hilarious to me, that whole sequence in the original is GOLD. Her spouting off a pudding recipe & the guy thinking its some metaphor for physics or something while Ami & Mamoru panic 😂😂😂
I watched this in Romania, including season 5, 25 years ago. Nothing was censored and we all had A LOT of questions. 😃 Kudos to the Sailor Moon team for the representation.
Same! Though I watched it with Italian dubbing so I wonder if some voices were changed. But no strange cuts or missing episodes as far as I can tell.
Same here😂
@@anabarbulescu4043 I watched it with Italian dubbing first too: Jadeite had a woman’s voice. When the show came to TVR, all the voices were the original ones and you could hear that he was actually a man.
i dont recall any censoring in germany either - i thought michiru and harakus relationship was so cute :-;

I just love the fact that Rukia and Ichigo are now cats.
“Cousins”…no one bought that. Even kids😂
Unless you lived in Alabama
I'm glad, that the German version was much, much closer to the original Japanese one. They did change some things, but those changes were minor. Usagi was names Bunny, which is the literal translation of her name, the others kept the name. No switching of genders, all the LGBT+ stuff stayed. And the first season was even aired on the equivalent of PBS.
But Zoisite was made male, and they tried for Fish Eye, but since he was shirtless in one episode, it was clear that he'sa guy. but yeah, sailor uranus and neptune were not censored, not the Star Lights
Thankfully, the new English dub from Viz Media follows the Japanese version with no censorship and edits.
HAHAHA, I remembered that.
As corny as the DiC dubs were we got some great moments from it.
@@CrimsonNineTail Oh for sure! I prefer the Dic dubs 😂The voice actresses and the music were amazing!
He is quite the fine lad ;)
But it got weird after finding out that Mamoru was indeed Chibi-Usa's dad.
What a coincidence... I also had a thing with Uranus.
I think it's called Elektra Complex, the female version of Oedipus complex.
Even though fully aware of most of these censored moments, Sailor Moon is still a childhood favorite for me growing up.
Honest at the time some these censor would of be needed to pass the rating in the west
@@Compucles I meant Sailor scout, Everyone still called her Hotaru.

@@rosemartasgaminghoard Maybe they had an issue with Usagi being unaware that she was being hit on by a lesbian?
@@Compucles hmm..maybe but Usagi fell for Sailor Saturn and was still attracted to her as a woman, at least in the manga, so idk.
Yeah. Zoisite was Princess Mercury's beau. And what makes Sailor Venus' story painful is that unlike the other Sailor Senshi, she remembers her time as Princess Venus, the moon kingdom, and her feelings for Kunzite.

My mom is candid about how she almost named me Serena after the same, but my dad vetoed it in favor of naming me after my grandma 🤣 mom was a real one
I grew up watching the 90s dub with my mom. When I was older I learned about Uranus and Neptune's relationship, I told my mom about it and she said "Yeah, I always thought they were a little too friendly to be cousins."
All I have to say about this video. Thank God Viz redubbed this anime. Not only do we finally get Stars. But all the cuts were fixed.
Changing Holy Grail to Purity Chalice makes it just sound perverted and borderline hentai.

Funnily enough, in the Manga, the 4 generals whom worked for beryl, were actually the love interests of the senshi
This is for the DIC/Cloverway dub.
Of all the anime shows out there, Sailor Moon is right up there with the most censored.
I remember being a senior in highschool watching this in 2000 on Cartoon Network's Toonami. Hoping to get the rest of season 4. I knew we would never get season 5... The censorship made me crack up so bad!
so sad here in the Philippines there was no censorship also
As a proud Canadian, I need to point out that the english dubbed version that was referenced here under “americanization” (14:33) where Usagi goes by Serena, was not actually made for all of North America.

Because "those North American kids can't be exposed to death on a regular basis."
#15: Can't have old(er) men hitting on underage girls.
Yeah like violence should've been presented it basically tells us that everyone outside of Japan are 4kids which I don't want to talk about.

I think the only reason why DIC music is appealing to fans and critics is because it’s was made out of love and care.
The German version as so much closer to the Japanese, just with minor changes :)
Changing Kunzite to Malachite makes some sense, as when they say the two-syllable "Kunzite" in Japanese, it becomes the three-syllable "Kun-zai-tou"
Since all the Shitennou are based on names of minerals, it seemed to be an easy fix to use a three-syllable name, in this case "Malachite"
Japanese voice actors and actresses are so good that I haven't watched it dubbed even once, so I didn't know what was changed. I can't even think of anyone other than Kotono Mitsuishi to voice Usagi
Stephanie sheh
I speak Japanese fluently so I've never watched dubs of any Japanese anime, live action series or movies.

I still love Sailor Moon. I get that its changed but still love it
I feel the same way. Always❤❤❤
No matter how badly it aged in places, I will never not tear up when I hear "Here I'm standing in the night." or "Deep in my soul, love so strong."
Still my most favorite anime.
17:34 dont forget me ah lmfaoo
Scouts are front line soldiers who are always the first to encounter the enemy. They also have the highest mortality rate.
Well that’s dark
a spanking is not violent.
especially when talking about a child drugging people.... 😅
Viz media started dubbing the series in 2014 and made a good impact
It's almost been 10 years since they've started dubbing, and I can't wait for them to dub the new Cosmos movie soon.
As someone who grew up with OG sailor moon, I think it's ridiculous that they sensored most of it. Cartoons in the 90s had way more adult themes and still said was for kids.
The Viz dub restored Naoko Takeuchi’s themes and restored the reputation of sailor moon.
I really don't care what people say, DiC dub for life!!! lol
That's why the Viz dub is the SUPERIOR VERSION OF SAILOR MOON!! IT'S JUST IMMACULATE AND DOESN'T CENSORE ANYTHING!!!!❤❤❤❤❤
When I watched SM in my country, Turkey, they dubbed Zoicide with a female voiceover. They also made Uranus and Neptune cousins.
Soundtrack from American version is such a joke. Just awful
JP versions are always more entertaining than the US versions
The most hilarious part about the Luna and Artimis were married even before they changed into cats.
It was always fun to run into someone that was gay when I grew up and have a chuckle about Amara and Michelle being “cousins.” They weren’t fooling anybody with those lame edits 😂
An attempt was made 😆
There are 3 people who exist in this world: People who call her "Serena", people who call her "Usagi", and those people who call her "Bunny" for whatever reason...
Also, you gotta appreciate the censors back then thought that to fix a lesbian relationship, all they had to do was turn it into an incestuous lesbian relationship. Boom. Fixed.
Calling Usagi bunny isn’t for some reason. Usagi means (bunny) rabbit in Japanese. So calling her bunny is calling her by her name.
@@whitewolf3051also she goes by Bunny in the manga
Used to watch it in the Philippines back when I was young (early 90's). Sailor Moon's name was initially Bunny but was subsequently changed (reverted) to Usagi. It was dubbed in Filipino but everything else was somehow legit (except for some parts). Even the LGBTQ themes were intact, from Fish-eye to Uranus and Saturn.
To be honest, Sailor Moon never needed these censorships
It did some are inappropriate and ever heard of opinons
If we had gotten the 5th season in English in the early 200s; they would have changed the Sailor Starlights to Sextuplets. The Sailor Starlights fought the monsters and enemies while Seiya, Yaten, and Taiki searched for the princess.
I watch the original sailor moon series on Hulu and they kept everything from the version in Japan so I did not have to deal with all of the censorship
It's almost like the NA release was a product of its time, and that despite the cuts and censorship made a metric f-ton of money for the franchise, keeping it alive for the last 30 years.
I have 2 cats.
They’re named Luna and Artemis 😀
They’re both female and still hate each other.
BTW Artemis is actually the _female_ goddess of the moon and the Greek equivalent of Diana the Roman goddess of the moon.
1:36 i❤ sailor moon. Ever since I was a kid
You should do a top 20 list of magical girl transformations.
Removing the last season also, of course, removes Usagi's quite literal totally nude form at the end of the show.
Cartoon Network calling Sailor Neptune & Uranus "Sisters" when they were both clearly Lesbians. That level of censorship borders on lnsulting. 💢
They were actually referred to as “cousins.”
oh the 90s..
Ikr, It's like the whole "sworn sisters".
20 reasons to watch US versions of animes never again...
I never watch sailor moon but I still watched this whole video. Very interesting.
It’s on TH-cam as I speak in the OG Japanese configuration.
Great video list. I seriously was not expecting these censored moments from Sailor Moon. it is a flipping shame about LGBTQ being reassigned relationships because of the market values.
I remember watching Sailor Moon on Cartoon Network and UPN!❤️📺🎶👍🏻
Same
I am absolutly proud of the version of my country, when I see that video. XD
I only remember one think say changed and that was Usagis name for most of the time. Yeah, they called her Usagi, but most of the time they called her Bunny, what is the english translation for Usagi.
In the German version Usagi was named Bunny
Which makes more sense. "Usagi" is Japanese for rabbit.
In Spain dub too
Technically speaking, Sailor Moon is my first anime.
To be fair, the Senshi getting translated into Scouts could also be a product of lip flaps. Alot of changes in Translation in Anime are due to the lip flaps not matching the direct translated.
Yeah but "sen-shi" and "sold-ier" are both 2 syllable words, and "scout" is one. So, that doesn't explain trying to match "lip flaps."
They should've kept all the original scenes for "Adult Swim" Sailor Moon is more interesting watching the original as an adult. While as a kid, I thought it was too girly.
I'm just happy they finally put the fifth season in English in 2019
Moments like these make me glad the Viz Redub exist
