    It’s a good build and design. I was in the Marines, I’ve handled the MUT, I was supply so didn’t have the need for it. Some of our amors used them regularly for maintenance and they loved it. The tool that I used was the Wave.

    I have a MUT and the truth is I have no use for it other than it's in my collection. I purchased it in Kandahar, Afghanistan, and no I'm not a former military I was over there as a contractor. The MUT was a must-have when I first laid eyes on it. I got it and I'm glad I did. Thank you for the review.

    Love your videos and appreciate your knowledge and experience with these kinds of tools. I'd like to suggest that you do some videos on maintenance, care and adjusting some of the tools. Things like how to sharpen the blades and what you use, how to lubricate the joints and mechanisms and what you use, how to adjust tensions if possible or maybe even some customizations. I would find that information very helpful and interesting.

    Haven't got the MUT but I've got the signal, considering getting the MUT even though I'm not a gun guy because the onboard bit storage is a huge plus for me since I prefer carrying with the biner from a belt loop over having a sheathe and I figure the gun tools and hammer would make pretty good persuaders for assorted prying tasks.
    From my experience with the Signal, I don't find that the main use for the handle lock is for the hammer, generally my grip will keep it closed while I'm pounding something. Where it really comes in handy is to keep it closed while carrying it with the biner, otherwise the Signal will just flop open. Upside to that is the Signal is loose enough that it is great for one handed operation. I can unclip it, then either deploy the blade one handed, or open up the pliers butterfly knife style. Not sure if that would work with the MUT, but it looks like it could.

    I’m sure this has been commented before but the reason the pliers are skinnier is because they are the perfect size to pull the pin out of the bolt carrier group when disassembling and reassembling. The mut has been my favorite Leatherman so far and I have it strapped to my range bag at all times. I also take it camping with me. The disassembly punch also works on Glock licking block pins

    I wish I had known this existed while I was in the infantry. This would have been infinitely more useful than the Gerber Diesel I had. I know there isn't anywhere to add it in, but an awl would also be something to have on there. Companies like Leatherman think about the needed mechanics of a tool for mechanical things, but fieldcraft is a more prevalent need. Really, you probably need to carry two tools altogether, but maybe there is a way to add just a couple more. Or, make a combo, like a military version of the Raptor tool to be sold with the MUT. If there was a way to also have something to do some hardcore prying, like a nail puller, and an awl, I can't think of anything else I would have needed.

    Great review on the MUT. Being former military a 24 year veteran. I have used the MUT and the three Gerber AR cleaning kits that the military buys. Price wise the MUT win’s hands down. But for functionality because the Gerber’s are designed just for the AR and the military spares no money on them. The MUT has other things like the saw and strap cutter built in it. Where with the Gerber’s you need to use the MP600 or the issued strap cutters on for anything else.

    I just bought both the Mut & the Crunch at the same time. I looked up reviews for functions of them b/4 I injured myself with them. You did a much better job than Nutnfancy in your presentation than he did & usually he is very concise. I bought the Crunch based on your review of it. I kinda new about the Mut, but checked in with you to get the fine details about it. Outstanding work on both reviews. I'm glad that I'm a sub.

    I bought one back when they first came out…I believe 2011 or 2012. Had to warranty the pin punch, as it would not open for some odd reason. With that all said, I’ll give my .02$.
    I work in maintenance, and this multi tool lived in my pocket for 7 years. Saved me many trips back to the shop to get another tool from my tool box, especially on service calls in the field. Used the saw a hundred different times for cutting tubing, hose, plastic, fiberglass. It’s heavy duty enough that you can reef on the pliers like you would a good set of knipex cobras. It’s held up to almost 10 years of use and I have no qualms about it. I’d like to see a small pair of scissors that could be used as an accessory like the long bits, maybe store them in the molle pouch. Other than that, I would grab my MUT over just about every other leatherman I owned, when working maintenance.

    I am looking for my first (only?) multitool and actually find the MUT very interesting, even though I am not anywhere close to the target group. I am wondering whether it would be possible to store 2 x two short flat bits instead of the two long ones.

    Thanks for this great video! I like many of the others, too.
    The pliers are awesome and those I use by far the most. I changed out the torx/hex long shank for two hex bits from the bit kit (as those work with my scope and bipod) since they fit very nicely in tandem inside the long slot, locking with the pushpin as with the original long shank bit. Also I added a third bit in the side bit holder, so I now have a total of five bits (ten applications) to use with the MUT while underway (as I don't carry the bit kit or molle). The punch also fits nicely (not in use often, though - but good to know it works when needed). Yes it's big and heavy, but the additional weight gives it that extra punch when using the hammer! Love this tool...

  • @matusknives
    @matusknives 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I would love to see a 'general use' MUT version with 4 main locking tools as I find the design really cool and the hammer very practical. I have seen some seriously modified MUT on YT, but while one can do a lot, adding tools with locking mechanism is most likely beyond a doable DIY modificaiton.

    Excellent review as usual sir. I always appreciate how your reviews keep the intended user/context of use in mind. And this one is no different. As a former Marine, I can definitely say that this tool would be a must have with my kit. Went to a Bass Pro to handle it and you are absolutely right about the robust locking spring for the bits. I didn't know about the spring and was surprised at how secured the bit was when trying to extract it. And I agree with the clip being appropriately designed. When pocketing and clipping multitools, its nice to have a robust clip for insert behind molle loops without fear of bending or snapping.
    As a service member, I can't say enough about how encouraging it is to have the support and appreciation of Americans like yourself. It is an honor to serve this country that gave me and my family so much. My parents were children during the Korean War. My dad had to flee his village from the N. Koreans; my mom's father was hunted as a person of interest by NK - now we're Americans; if it weren't for direct American intervention in Korea, 51 million Koreans in S. Korea and millions more around the world, my family included, wouldn't be enjoying the benefits of liberty, democracy, and capitalism, and the world wouldn't have the products and innovation from the likes of Samsung, LG, Hyundai, Kia, ..etc). God Bless America.

    The serrated blade is important to active troops as most clothing and articles of apparel is nylon or synthetic materials including cords and ropes. Hc420 is easier to sharpen those serrations. Many will disagree but many will agree. It’s a opinion.

    Although im all about guns what made me get the surge was the lack of a can opener. Very rarely need it but when you have it it saves a lot of nerve of trying to open the can with the knife. Since i sliced open my palm when i was little i really want to have one on me. Also thinking if i could get the scraping tool on the surge instead of the serrated blade. Because for weapon maintenance surge with a bit kit is completely enough but the scraper would be a nice quality of life addition.

    My favorite Leatherman of all time is the Super Tool 300. My favorite lower brand is the Ozark Trail Multiforce. My preference for the Super Tool 300 is the fact that it's large, and fits my hand better. I'm no snob, I collect any multi-tool that looks like a good quality offering, but I avoid the Gerber stuff entirely (their blades are a nightmare to resharpen). • @ricev7071
    @ricev7071 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    If the MUT came with different tools, I would buy it. I do like the Hammer and clip attachment but I feel that there could have been better tools on it. The punch I would prefer to have a pointed tip, it's just a dull pin that unscrews, I just don't find these tools that useful, there's no wow factor. I'll stick with the Surge.

    • @txtoolcrib
      @txtoolcrib  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      F C well I usually don’t like to get into these debates, but I have to at least respond. You seem like a pacifist, which is fine. That’s your right. Don’t kid yourself though. There are bad people in the world, evil people. Most times the only way to stop them is by force. While you may live in a fantasy world where everybody eats ice cream and sings Kumbaya, the world is not like that.
      Whether you choose to believe it or not, the world looks to America in times of need. I have a great amount of respect for other countries and their people. Make no mistake about it, the USA is the super power of the world. And I will not sit idly by and listen to America bashing. It would be in your interest to learn some history, because those that forget it are doomed to repeat it. If not for Americans, the world you know today would not exist. You should be thankful for that.
