    Just got one of these directly from leatherman and the plier head did not include the #8-32 holes in it. I contacted them and sent pictures of the issue and will see what happens. Great review and the reason for my purchase.

      Was finally sent a replacement after calling Leatherman again. If you order one just be sure that you have the correct plier head. It was a PITA to get them to acknowledge that they made a mistake and make it right.

    Buttomline is it'll always depend on the users need. As long as leatherman keeps on creating new products that is deem necessary for the users need that's the way to go.

    Commented before the end of the vid.
    The spring failed on my bit extender so I superglued a rare earth magnet in there making it essentially the same as this new one with regards to standard 1/4 bits. I do like that this new one is thinner walled though.
    The best extra bit you can carry imo is a long shank 1/4 bit in no2 Philips but with a narrow shaft on it rather than it be 1/4 hex the whole way. Really helps you get into plastic casings where the recessed screw holes are are a tight fit with screw head

      TX Tool Crib i got some precut adhesive tape for disc magnets, (i think magnets4sale?) for a jig to clean off metal particles on tools and fasteners.
      I ended up using some small magnets in the bit holder for my Victorinox Ratchet (great little edc.) it also would work for the Leatherman.

    • @Streamtronics
      @Streamtronics 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I had the same idea, but doesn't the magnet add to much at the bottom, making the double sided leatherman bits almost fall out (or at least stick out so that the area where torque is applied to the bit is quite small)?

    • @GabeMacDonnell
      @GabeMacDonnell 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Streamtronics i should have explained better. I actually forget what diameter the magnets were, (probably 4 or 5mm.) there's a recess below the shelf where the bit is seated. The magnet is attached to the SIDE of the tool, perpendicular to the bottom of the bit, not the bottom. It's just close enough to hold a fastener, but doesn't get pulled out with the bit. I tried stacking smaller magnets in that recess- way too strong.
      It's be more work, and i don't know it'd be any better, but you could use epoxy putty to seat a single magnet parallel to the big's bottom.
      I haven't done this to my leatherman bit holder yet. But i magnetized the bits i use most often, and that works quite well.

      The thinner AtWe is actually fine with me. It may seem less beefy but the bit extender is made from s7 steel

    • @dmam412

      I think this would bankrupt them. If every person were able to customize there own tool that would entail making a platform or platforms with part interchangeability and restructuring their plant operations to do jobs piecemeal.
      They leverage economies of scale to keep costs down and competitive. In addition by you being able to purchase your own DIY MT it would take away from current models sales. Every new thing LM does competes with other MTs not only in the market but their own MTs.
      If they wanted to be a DIY MT platform it would probably come out of the LM garage and require a substantive engineering effort to do.
      I would think the price would range somewhere in the vicinity of 250-500

    As somebody in the military, I really recommend the MUT if you want it more for weapons cleaning. The super tool is an all around good multi tool. The tool that comes with the MUT that you would use to adjust the front sight is going to be better functional compared to the front sight tool that comes with the super tool. Just speaking from experience. I’m looking at buying both of these tools with the intention of eventually owning both. This is also coming from somebody who definitely enjoys EDC. I would attempt to use the pry bar to adjust the front sight or the small flathead before using the front sight tool.

      @@Mikey-ym6ok yeah not all the time you’re issued them and you often have to piecemeal different cleaning kits together to get something adequate. Most of the time the arms room has cleaning kits and then everybody just steals onesies and twosies out of there and then it’s bare then you’re either left to buy your own or steal the onesies and twosies like everybody else.

  • @My03Tundra
    @My03Tundra 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    One of my favorite tools. Just wish the sheath held onto the extender a bit better. Unless I need it, I typically leave the extender at home in a drawer. I also do like the new extender, as it improves on design issues from the old one. I do wish we could get some MOLLE sheaths that had button closures, but I know why Velcro was chosen; even when dirty, or dusty, you’ll still be likely to close and secure your tool. As for the toolset, it is what a lot of people have been wanting in the SuperTool 300 chassis for awhile. I don’t see why a lot of screwdrivers are needed on the tool, when you have the bit exchanger.

    Another good review of good multi tool. I have both Leatherman and Gerber multi tools plus a few other brand’s. I am now getting back into collecting Leatherman’s (my wife says I have problems with multi tools) so this is in way a bashing or talking bad about Leatherman I carried one in Iraq along with MP600. But I would tell them let the military supply them with the multi tool, strap cutter and cleaning kit for for free. Have them buy one they can afford get it engraved with their name, rank and wherever they deployed. Give it to them as gift when they get home so they know how much they mean to them. The MP600 if you break it or loose it on deployment the supply NCO will give them one for free.

    Good review Ben as always. I purchased this one about a year ago. I have a pretty good collection of Leatherman and Gerber multitools but for me I still think the Surge has the best all around tool set and I've tried many 😊 but I thought the innovative design on this one was really cool. I already had the Gerber Centerdrive and liked the design of the prybar on this one in comparison to the Gerber but I agree. The large flat head and putting another implement like the saw perhaps would be better. I'm an aircraft mechanic by trade and I'm always using the large flat head on my Surge for popping open spring latches, as a mini prybar, scraper, you name it. I like this multitool a lot and will keep it as a backup/range tool but until someone comes out with something better Surge is still king for me 😂 thanks Ben

    Thanks for this review. Been using a modified Super Tool 300 EOD for years and it's pretty beat up after years of use and abuse. Maybe I'll get a 300 M and do a mashup of 300 EOD and 300 M components on basis of the 300 M to finally replace my modified 300 EOD as my EDC multi-tool. I'd get rid off the lanyard-ring and the file to replace it with the t-shank adapter from the 300 EOD. So I'd have the option to carry woodsaw, metal-saw and file as t-shank blades with me.
    I always hated the unnecessary tools on the Leathermans. Who needs all that flathead screwdrivers if you have Bit-adapters? By the way flathead has become uncommon, in reality I mostly have to deal with Philipps, Hex and Torx. Regarding Bit-adapters I may be a bit old fashioned, as the tool might be used for work on electronics. Therefore I do not want Bit-holders with magnets. Maybe I'd replace the adapter for the Leatherman-Bits with the old Philipps-screwdriver from the Super Tool 300 (EOD) to use the old Bit-Adapter. [Annotation: I sometimes work on machines like reel to reel tape machines, casette-decks and old computers, that's why I do not want anything magnetic getting in touch with those machines]. This is a personal issue.
    I like the idea of having a pry bar and a carbon scraper. The carbon scraper is a replacement for the awl with a hole, respectively looks if it can be used for that particular task. Cool.
    Marginal note: No one-hand-operated blades means 'carry-legal' in my country. :-)

    I really wish Leatherman would have a system to allow for us to order a custom Rebar or ST 300. I get that the outer tools may or may not be exchangeable on the Wave/Surge/Charge, but the interior tools should be able to be customizable as well. I'd pay a premium (over the already premium initial price lol) to have a factory direct custom Leatherman multi tool with only the tools I need/want on it and none that will never be used.

    I hope they put the holder for the extender inside of the case on more Leathermans. It would be much more secure then how the Charge has to store it on the side and to keep it falling out you need to put a clip like from a space pen on it to hold it in place.

    Have you considered reviewing any of the Ganzo multi tools? I'd like to hear your thoughts on the G302H w/ its bit kit, theses are fairly inexpensive tools and the bit kit is included in the already low price - what i think you'd be interested in is the bit extender/adapter that they ship with accommodates regular sized bits and that adapter will fit on the supertool 300 via the main driver. Just a thought, i appreciate that ganzo doesnt always have the best reputation.

      @@txtoolcrib Based on my needs in the last two years I can easily say this would be the perfect tool for the job. The front sight tool is awesome since its doubles as abit extender, and you dont have to carry two separate tools for your weapon.

    Perhaps once they got enough interest in the tool..they released it?
    So, I hope folks will now start emailing Leatherman about releasing their 2 most popular tools (Wave+ & Surge)..in their most popular color scheme (Coyote/Black Oxide).
    Also, email them about making this new Extender/Adapter a separate accessory for purchase, like he said!

    I have the Surge with the standard extension. With it I carry normal bits. BUT, I have placed a tiny neodymium magnet inside the extension hole. It’s just big enough to stop the bit from falling too far in, but it goes far enough to have the ring barely catch the bit. But the magnet is what keeps the bits in place. Basically I’ve turned the standard extension into the extension Leatherman should have made from the start.

    Yeah, I'm a saw guy. Looks fantastic up til then. I use the scissors a fair amount, too, but I can live without them. Too bad. With the adapter, why bother with any integral drivers? That's a question I've always had with Leathermans and multitools as a whole.

    • @txtoolcrib
      @txtoolcrib  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You make a point about the drivers. I personally would rather see them eliminate the lanyard loop on these larger framed tools. I think they take up the space where, with some thinner spacer washers, another tool could be installed.

      It does. Leatherman kind of surprised us with this one. I agree that the Surge is still the best all around multi tool. I just think this one has some tools that would be more beneficial to those in the military, the scraper and sight tool in particular.

    • @adamlee581
      @adamlee581 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@txtoolcrib yeah you're right as a "tool kit" rather than a pocket knife this probably wins over the surge for a military guy.....although I'd be looking at swapping the file for a surge blade exchanger but I can't leave anything alone lol.
      Also agree the pry tool would have been better as a large flat head driver. How often does a soldier need to pull picture frame nails?
      A flat ended prybar is obviously much stronger too.

    it looks like the velcro on the sheath lost some hooks when you opened it. I had that issue with the smaller sheath my OHT came in. I thought only the smaller version has that issue and the XL version (that comes with the MUT and this one) was fine... open it a few times over a table and have a look if you find small black plastic hooks... I was extremely disappointed when I had that happen.

There's actually lots of reports out there of the velcro on the smaller black molle sheath getting worn out quickly, but I suspect most people don't realize it's *so bad* they're literally ripping out the small hooks. I also read that the other color (desert tan) doesn't have that issue... haven't tried it tho.
