    There is a very subtle retention device for the bit driver. Just squeeze it to release the bit.

    Some what new to the project ( about a year now but I think I'm caught up), thank you for the hard work you have put into these videos. You have influenced multiple buying decisions for me ( Glock 17, Sig p2022, multiple knives and optics) all of which I have been extremely impressed with. So again thanks and keep up the good work.

    Was watching and noticed you could not get the bit out. That is because it is a lock retention system to hold bit in place. Push down on retention button and bit comes right out and had the same issue until I actually went back and looked at the directions. I have the MUT EOD...

    To get the screwdriver bits back out, you just press down on the thin square spring clip that wraps over the end that you slide the bit into. You can actually see it (the gap between the screwdriver end and the thin steel springy bit retainer) really clearly in your video. I couldn't look as you were trying to pull it out by force. It was like watching an accident waiting to happen. Oh wait, it did happen. :)

  • @JosiahSullivan
    @JosiahSullivan 8 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    That was too funny. You can squeeze that clip that holds the bit in and the bit will come right out. But it's not quite as humours as pulling it out with another multi-tool.

    I have this tool and it's awesome! I'm a dutch guy, so the weight isn't a problem for edc. We're not allowed to carry a gun, so a heavier tool is not a problem. I did replace the scraper for scissors, and the dis-assembly tool for a ferrocerium rod. But the pocket clip is just great

    It's good to see you back to doing MT tabletop reviews again, Nutn. For me, it feels like coming home. Regarding the MUT, and all MT's, you've just strengthened the argument AGAINST the need for carrying a multitool, and in your own words: "...Wouldn't you have your tool kit with you?"
    Sure, I have all my tools at home. I have a tool kit with me in my car. When I go out to a friend's or relative's home, they have their own tool kits. That covers about 90% of my time (being limited by some physical impairments). For me, carrying an MT is just fun. If more people were really honest, I bet they would say the same thing. I love the stuff though. It's manly fun. Man fun. That didn't come out right. Neither did that.

    This is the biggest baddest multitool on the block . I just got the blackened version . I'm going to EDC this bad boy , weight doesn't bother me . When you pull this beast out . People know you're gonna handle the situation. This thing is a tank , I christen it the "Panzer" . I think I have a crush on the Panzer .. yeah baby!!

  • @Starfireaw11
    @Starfireaw11 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't know if anyone has pointed it out yet, but the reason that you had trouble getting the bit out, and subsequently cut yourself, is that there is a locking bar on the bit driver that you need to give a gentle squeeze before sliding it out. The scraper is not coated, but is made of bronze, which as a softer metal, won't damage your weapon parts.

  • @TXetc
    @TXetc 10 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Been carrying the Leatherman Surge for 9 years now and love it. Was a weapons guy in the military and we thought the MUT was neat but SILLY. Here's why: It's not really something you're going to need enough to carry on your hip all day, very niche usage. You have much better full size weapons tools back at the armory/base. Then you are missing out on carrying a REAL Leatherman you will definitely need. I would say the MUT is a decent tool for your vehicle/range box and that's about it. Not worth the $$$ for me personally.

  • @mastercfromhalo3
    @mastercfromhalo3 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've had a MUT for about 2-3 years and I figured I'd mention 2 things. 1- there's a metal tab thing at the end of the handle right where the bit starts going into the handle you push to release those bits! Sorry you got injured (but it was kinda funny!) all you gotta do is squeeze with one hand and pull with the other and the bit comes right out. Also you forgot to mention the hammer head is also a bolt override tool! That comes in handy.

  • @tfre3927
    @tfre3927 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've been carrying this MUT on the bike for quite some time now. I'm very impressed with it, with exception of one feature: the button that stores the hex and phillips/flat head keys. I've been SO LUCKY not to have lost those a number of times. EVERYTHING else is awesome and the brass tool is wicked for clearing a weapon and not damaging parts. Blade rocks. Saw is badass.

  • @kentsutton12
    @kentsutton12 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is my edc when ever I go out shooting. Great tool. I believe the end of the hammer was designed to clear malfunctions when the bolt did not cycle all the way back and you have a case stuck 1/2 way but a rack on the charging handle isn't enough. When you take into consideration the intended use of the MUT its amazing!

  • @frankypty21
    @frankypty21 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    I purchase one a few years ago and I like it. Although I don't have a rifle yet. What drew me to this item is the folding knife and the seatbelt cutter, I've used the saw a few times, as well as the screwdrivers. It fits just fine on my duty belt.

    Nice review (as always)
    I love the MUT. I use it everyday in my work (im a janitor)... especially the hammer!
    Yes it has alot of features i will never use on the MUT but i need a multitool with a hammer feature so i really hope it will be a common tool on future multitools.
    However i love the MUT (best looking one on the market AGREEE :)
    And the saw is awsom i use it quite often!
    And i love multitools that uses bits its the best thing like u said the long ones are great.. So with those things in mind the MUT was in my opinion the best option for me.
    BUT i really hope Leatherman will release in the future a more common daily use specific MUT version (without the firearm tools and switch them for more common use tools)
    I switch between MUT and Skeletool as EDC multitools depending on what i think i will need during the day.
    Sorry for my poor english.
    Thanks Nutn and keep up the great work
    Much love from Sweden

    Dude! There is a release to unlock the bits. Also the short bit can be left in there to keep things out of the cutter when the tool is closed.
    I'm really surprised you dig this MT! I thought you were going to hate on it for sure. Now that I have your blessing, I might pick one up!
    Cheers

    I'm sure someone's pointed this out already, but the bit socket has a lock on it to keep the bit in. You need to press on the side of the bit socket to release it.

    As someone who doesn't specifically count ounces and who was specifically tasked with the care and oversight of 1300 weapons, most of which were automatic, I carried the MUT EVERY day. I LOVE the mut. It is a fantastic multitool IF you are around weapons, for which it was intended. These days, it goes in my range bag. I just don't need the majority of its functions for EDC.

    Hey Nut'N. Thanks for another great review.
    Those bits lock into place. If you look at 12:52 on the video you can see the unlock button. Depress it and the bit falls right out. I know because I did the exact same thing as you with another multitool trying to get the bit out. Minus the finger damage. Thanks again for all the hard work!!!

    There is also the multitasker, which is definitely more of tool box replacement for ARs, though I guess the MUT is intended to be more GP. Carbon scraper is kinda nonsensical though, a decent AR can be fired until the barrel becomes a smooth bore just a minuscule amount of FP-10 or similarly cheap oil without need to scrap carbon assuming your ammunition is not awful.
    You can set a DI gun's hand guards on fire before making it fail IF you are using correct pressure ammunition and your gun is not garbage.

    The mut rocks for me.
    I am a cake tech.
    I use it every day. Seriously.
    The functions I use most are the pliers, cutters, Philips had and hammer.
    She lives in my front jeans pocket or shorts when I am home.
    It is hefty a little bulky. But that goes away quick.
    I,I mean my hands really appreciate the ergonomics and rounded edges.
    In fact I am going to do an update video right now.

    I have a MUT but mine has the black blade, saw, and pliers and my blades are 154cm. But min didn't come with the sight tool instead the other side of the wrench is 1/2 inch wrench. But a very sturdy tool I keep it attached to my plate carrier. As to the first thing though I never go anywhere without my juice s2.

    You are supposed to push on the base where the driver bit locks in to release it. It just falls out when you press the right spot. I couldn't figure out why it was so hard to get the driver bits out until I stumbled upon it. :)

    im an IR (m27)gunner in the marine corps infantry and I carry this multi tool. I just have to say I love it. Since I have an m27 as of now there is no real use for the front sight post tool unless I help out my marines when we zero our iron sights... Which still rarely happens because we use optics nowadays. And the tool to clear brass over bolt is not that practical. I mean, do you really think your going to have the time to pull out your multi tool on a range for a jam? Not really. But other then that this thing is awesome. Weapons maintenance is pretty nice when you have just a few extra tools in your pocket like the carbon scraper. And even just the tools itself. As a grunt you never know what your going to be doing next so having the screw driver, different gauge wire cutters, and so on is just really nice. So if you are truly going to use this tool for its intended purpose and not just a gear bomb I say get it.

    I carry a MUT every day and pretty much everywhere I go. Clips into my front pocket just fine and you get used to the weight. I also use the MUT at least 10 times a week for various reasons. Most of them are at work. Granted, I sometimes use features for reasons other than they were most likely intended for. I've carried it for the last two years and it has been an absolute beast. I don't see myself carrying a different MT anytime soon.

    Best leatherman purchase I've made. First and second kind of cool if you're planning to use it for its intended purpose. I'm bummed its not better for everyday use and I don't carry it daily or even out backpacking but you CANNOT beat it for the range bag and bug out equipment if you have AR variant rifles.

    Love my MUT, part of my EDC now for a year and a half. I do go to the range 3 or so times a week, so it gets plenty of use helping friends.
    Hell, awesome cigar cutter too!
    The only thing that drives me nuts, it's easy to lose the driver bits. I've replaced 'em 3 times already. Dunno how they keep coming loose.
    That being said, ZERO regrets and I'll continue to carry daily. Have a special pocket in the Carharts for it.

    Second kind of cool for sure but very heavy. On duty I carry a Wave every day, and when off a Skeletool is my best friend. Thank you.

    I'm sure you know now but you have to depress the "holder" for the bit to remove the bit. It's kind of locked.
    Also don't ever use the bronze for anything other than carbon scratching. The metal is softer than the steel on a rifle so it won't scratch. BUT, it will snap if used for other things. I've seen it happen to many people.

    Couple of pieces of input: The real, full-sized MUT comes with a Coyote pouch, but I wanted you to know that there are now MultiCam aftermarket pouches. 1 kind of good idea is the locking blades, the over bolt jam clearing hook, the bronze carbon-scraping tool will not scratch the metal on your weapon. The downside is the fact that you may need a way of being able to PULL the screwdriver heads from the bay that holds the heads in-place, since the tolerances are TIGHT. I carry one either on the rig, or (every time), to the range, and have used it, OVER AND OVER, again, even though I don't fancy myself to be an "armorer," just another slob who needs to be able to tighten, loosen, fix, and adjust stuff, all the time. Be careful to develop a technique that allows you shut the pliers, without pinching yourself. Flipping-open the blades is nice and easy, and, again, the BLADES LOCK. The shroud line cutter is nice and quick, without having to open a blade. I might even consider grinding-down the bits/screwdriver blades' thicknesses, just a TAD, to make them easier to extract from the bit hole. As if to prove my point, look how hard it was for Nut'n to extract the bit! Ouch. The hook up in the "hammer" fixture is made for allowing you to FORCE-jerk a stuck bolt backward, if a round somehow gets stuck, on TOP of the M4/M16 bolt, which is just about the WORST kind of jam you can experience. The Hoss USMC has done a video on how to do that, I think, but I might be wrong. I don't worry about the weight. I just exercise with a ruck full of (a lot) of sand, so that I will be ABLE to carry what's needed, instead of hoping-for "helium-filled" gear, which doesn't exist. Great, balanced review, Nut'n, as always! :o)

It'll amaze you when you think outside the box. I still keep its little brother the skeletool in the car as back up. I have the Skeletool and use it in EDC and had thought about "upgrading" to the MUT. I decided not to as it's really a companion for the AR/M4 as stated in the review. I use the skeletool at least twice a day and some days a lot more. It's light weight and fits in my front pocket.

    I have owned the MUT for a year and a half now. It never leaves my side during the day. As an electrician I find myself using the hammer function (wear gloves) A LOT, especially under houses and in tight spaces where swinging a full size hammer is not an option. The weight has not been an option since my regular toolbelt weighs 30 pounds with drill and handtools. If you are in the trades this tool is a must.
    Sorry to say I have needed scissors since I am not making paper cutouts. One thing that was overlooked was the value of the saw. Out in the woods that 14oz gives you much of the capabilities as a full size camping saw. Granted I would like a bigger saw but given strictly a discussion of SWAC the MUT will get the job done.
    If you buy the MUT on Amazon MAKE SURE the seller is selling the knife with the sheath and the wrench. And the best thing about the MUT... rapid deploy bottle opener for after work... just saying.

    Great review. A skeletool review would be awesome. I know you like the juice, but the skeletool excels because of the driver with replaceable bits. I run mine with the phillips/ flathead bit and the #10/#15 torx in the storage compartment.

    Great review, just curious what is the big deal about scissors on a multitool? Can you give me an example of what you do with the scissors that you can't do with a knife

    Where is the SOG mt review? You seemed impressed by the compound force of the pliers during your sog factory/store visit and said you would take a pass at one.

    Have the SOG Trident seat belt cutter for Every Day Carry; but use it for cutting the twine on bales of hay. The brother of the MUT, the MUT EOD is in the B.O.B. aka the Get Home Bag. Also have an early version of Leatherman and now discontinued. Great review, tjl Sent by Win7Pro64 w/ADSL

    Awesome review Nutn,I have never seen the need for scissors on a multitool but I carry a Swiss army knife that has them.

    I live in Poland, gun permits are somewhat rare and gun usage is strictly regulated (shooting range, hunting or far from any human being not expecting you to use a gun), so the MUT is useless for civils. The Signal has more uses, doesn't have the black oxide a.k.a. the coating that ends up coating you, has an awl and the useful can+bottle opener, plus the carabiner/hammer is better.

    From my personal use, the carbon scraper is actually made out of a very soft metal, I wouldn't use it for any kind of puncturing. I've had to bend that thing back quiiite a bit.
    There is a release for the screwdriver attachments, you just push sideways on the base, no self mutilation required ;)
    I've put my MUT through quite a bit, in the field and otherwise and it has stood up to the punishment, never had an issue.
    Anything I've needed scissors for, I've been able to use a knife, maybe not as pretty but it works. I don't need another tool taking up space that I consider redundant.

    Dude, you can easily pop out the screwdriver bits by pressing on the on the steel tab on the inside grip. It has a diagram of of a bit being pulled out on it.

    My Super tool resides in my EDC bag and it is heavy, I need to get one of those juice models... why do I keep saying that and not following through?
    This weekend for sure!
    I'll have to give the MUT some thought, judging by my juice speed of purchase it may be a while but it is a cool tool.

    Great video and thanks for your insights. One comment I wanted to add was that some multi-tools pinch your hand when using the pliers so please consider the ergonomics with repeated use.

    Nice review. Keep mine in the range bag. Agree it's not the best EDC for general tasks, but, for the guns I love it. Got the Wave Ti for EDC (not sure if that's the official name),

    I could see this being perfect for any bag that includes a firearm. You can build a very compact and lightweight cleaning kit around this tool.

    Carry a wave on my duty belt rig and have done for 3 years it's amazing just how often it comes into play. The MUT looks great but the wave is more practical for me.

    bits have a retention spring. they are locked in and you must push the spring in to release the bit.
