    Reminds me of my old warehouse job when I would have to move a TON of heavy boxes, I had to change my mentality, instead of being intimidated by the 100s of boxes I had to move, I focused on one box at a time, "I just have to move this one box."

    Very helpful, thank you. Trying to tackle too much at once can be so overwhelming. And then beating yourself up mentally when you fail... Setting small manageable goals is a
    more realistic approach.

    The feeling of overwhelm is a huge part of ADHD. Failing to do things due to this overwhelm leads to depression. This combination of ADHD + depression results in every task becoming a gigantic obstacle. Doing the laundry is delayed for days and days. Taking a shower, buying groceries, getting gas.......all of these things that are second nature to normal people become huge sources of overwhelm and ultimately failure to depressives. Add anhedonia and avolition, and the person can't and won't do anything to help themselves. It's hopeless, and it's never going to get better.

      Hi Becca - it can take a little bit of time to get unstuck, but once a person starts getting some positive momentum, things do get easier and the pace of improvement increases. The first key step is just getting unstuck.

    Hello Dr. Nader... I've been dealing with depression since November last year, my girlfriend got pregnant and it really shocked us for a while, had to change country to move in with her and start new work and i find it really hard to the point where i have some very dark thoughts about myself. The truth is I never opened up about this to anyone because i always thought its a phase and it all going to be fine and I'm so happy that because today i finally found strength in me to go to my doctor and share her all of my feelings and fears and i got diagnosed with depression, idk why it sounds crazy but im happy that i know where all of my problems are coming from, because no matter what i tried didn't work. I've watched so many videos of you in the last couple of hours and I find it really inspiring to be a better person for me and my family. Thank you for doing what you're doing!

    Just to let you know, that although I have not come out of my depression...yet..., you are giving me real hope that I can and I will get there. I feel you put it out there speaking to a camera, and although you know that what you are saying is helpful, you deserve to hear from the people who are actually watching and learning...and hopefully implementing. I look forward to getting back and reporting successes. At first perhaps minor, but eventually major.

    thank you for sharing the tips, Dr Nader. the hopelessnes of depression sometimes seems so unbearable, it is wonderful to hear that getting 'unstuck' can begin so gently. I decided to start with a 15-30min yoga every day to boost my productivity levels and stay in shape, it is hard to believe in myself that I can do it, but having a goal helps me a lot!

    Just found out your channel and I love it. Thank you so much! You're explaining everything very calm and logical. It's awesome to have practical tips. Depression can feel so overwheming. Feeling like a failure and stuck in doing nothing. You seem like you fully understand the stuggle.
    What I find most difficult in my 'lower' days is feeling alone in my emotions. Like when my partner says: " why are you so down? There's nothing wrong, you've a good life."
    Sometimes I just don't feel joy anymore. Without a logical reason or trigger. It's hard to feel connection with anyone in those moments. Do you have tips for that?

      My advice for those moment would be to notice the thoughts that come up when you are not feeling connection with others. I'd then work on acceptance and learning that it's okay to have those moments. There's nothing wrong with having down days, days where you don't feel as much connection but the problem is n fact what you tell yourself when this happens. So might be worth working on your self talk when this does happen

      Validation is important when sharing feelings. It is not agreeing with the feeling or statement but acknowledging it, not discounting it. Creates a connection, through being heard and understanding with empathy.

    Thank you so much. I have been battling depression and find it hard to do anything. This has helped so much. I say I will exercise for only 15 minutes but many times it will be an hour, sometimes it will be 15 minutes but at least I’m doing it

    my number 1 tip is to set alarm early, get up, stay up, maybe go outside early too, then that night, go to bed very early, like 8 pm, then get up at 6:30am everyday, this just transfers night dwellers time better. basically, you need more sleep, earlier.

    How can i overcome this?

      Typically, libido improves as depression starts to get better and a person feels more active and motivated.

    First up: thanks so much for all the amazing videos, for giving people hope and tools to move past whatever might be interfering with their lives :)
    How would you do this process for more complex and abstract problems than the example of gaining weight (e.g. negative thought patterns as part of social anxiety or depression)? I'm kind of struggling applying the concept to these types of problems and finding solutions meeting the four criteria. Hoping for some insight - all the best to you! :)

    Been watching videos today on depression, and I liked yours the best. I just wrote down my problems I’m struggling with, think most are connected with each other, and are probably similar with other people. I’m beginning with my lack of energy. Which is connected to 1) lack of sleep connected to 2)drinking caffeine all day connected to 3)boredom and stress at work connected to 4) eating junk food connected to 5) being overweight connected to 6) pains and stiffness in my body connected to 7) lack of interest in most things I used to have fun doing connected to 8) lack of interest presently and the future So I’m in the parking lot of the gym trying to get enough energy to go inside. Gonna drink a Mountain Dew to get me there, see what I said? 😂😂

    I’ll tell you what the problems are;
    Divorce at 43 after 9 years of happiness
    Huge savings burnt on the settlement
    Self isolation and all its effects
    Mental stress = brain chaos
    Social anxiety / physical stress/ it’s a bitch. But sometimes we don’t have the foresight to see that everything happens for a reason.

    I have to say that I find it problematic that modern therapy always looks at depression as an individual problem that the depressed individual then has to fix (as if that would be possible). I'm not saying that depressed people are without power but most reasons I am depressed are because of the current state of the world around me.

      Hi Hingle - you are absolutely right that external forces can have a huge impact on an individual's depression. However, in psychological therapy, we can't change the world; we can only change how a person responds and adapts to it. I hope that makes sense.

      @@DrRamiNader Fair enough, I am currently in therapy and its helping a bit, but I think therapists need to aknowledge that sometimes (actually a lot of the time) there are greater forces at play that one can not change. Of course I can go running everyday, meditate and eat healthy but that will not help change climatechange or a pending war in ukraine for example. And I think therapists often (without bad intent) put all the pressure on the patient by making it a personal problem rather than a philosophical one. I think the world today is just not a good place for people that are very sensible. Too much capitalism. Too much pressure to always perform. Thank you for your reply btw, I still enjoy your videos very much :)

      @@hinglemccringleberry5431 I agree with you that external factors can play a huge role in a person's psychological and emotional difficulties. And I often explain this to my clients, pointing out their their emotional reactions are not always pathological, but reasonable reactions to a pathological situation. Then the focus becomes more on coping and reducing the suffering the person is experiencing in the situation, rather than pathologizing the emotions.

      @@hinglemccringleberry5431 you are normal to be depressed and people who aren’t depressed at all are the weird ones I think. I used to run into the same problems in therapy. I wish therapists were required to study existentialism or philosophy in general. I think the CBT model puts therapists in a mode of convincing the client that their thinking is wrong, even when it’s not. I think therapy can still be helpful though. And I’ve been finding this guy’s TH-cam channel to be really helpful. Please let me know if you find strategies that help you because I have a similar reaction to the world. Thanks.
