My favorite part is the Kampfer is taking out the Federation's mobile suit and using the grenade on the Alex.

War in the pocket is in my mind the single best Gunndam, I think a lot of mobile suit shows and movies get their anti war message or subtext really mixed it, usually comes in the form of a teenager who feels conflicted about using lethal force in his giant killing machine to solve the problems with awesome battles.
Not war in the pocket... War in the pocket shows you the absolute pointless nature of war, this is basically the Japanese version of all quiet on the western front. Zeon doesn't need to send this special forces team here because the war is about to be over in two weeks and the Alex would never see production or even use in battle outside this incident. The Federation doesn't need to protect the suit for that same reason, this is all absolutely meaningless in the context of the wars outcome, it's a trifle at the eleventh hour of a dying rebellion.
It shows people who if you actually got to know them almost all have redeemable quality, it shows the viseral nature of war with kinetic violence and blood, it shows the young naive child and the rookie grow alongside one another. They were basically both children who believed exactly what they were told about the conflict, they believed in the sacrifice; that it was for something. The white whale of the colony potentially being destroyed from a fleet that would never arrive because it was destroyed by the Federation, the nuke that wasn't going to come. But they work together and come up with a beautiful strategy to kill their neighbor despite them not knowing just how pointless it all really is.
If they're victorious or they're defeated has no bearing whatsoever on the geopolitical situation at large, they're cogs that just haven't quite lost their momentum. Damned by the karma of others when coupled with their own naivety, whirled into the spectacle and promises of an uncaring machine that churns their immature ambitions into death for the sake of it.
In the end the young pilots heroism lives only in the heart of a single boy, the one person mourning him alongside his own innocence. Who knew as he watched his friend die that while it might have been for nothing, he has to make it worth something. Surrounded by people who have no idea of the truth, he just cried till the end of the war.
When it was all over, still managing to look the woman who killed his friend straight in the face and smile, pretending everything is okay. Because after all she was just a cog too.
tf are you saying? 💀 this happened before the battle at a baoa qu, the war is still on going and they didn't know when the war ends, ofcourse they'll stop the delivery of alex because they know what a gundam could do, the captured of battleship with warhead is accidental or maybe the captain intentionally surrendered we don't know, if the ship didn't captured bernie will still save the colony so it's not meaningless, it's just a plot twist that any character inside the ova didn't know, if they're something meaningless here it's you and everything you've said lol.

@@orochi2723 Last fight literally takes place during the final moments of the OYW, with the entire series taking place over a week I think? It is so late in the war that it's almost UC 80, and even IS at the very end.

The kampfer is a pretty advanced zeonic mobile suit for its time, I question why this wasn't mass produced instead of the Zaku's, gelgoogs, and other Zaku variants, the fact that you can assemble this and transport it in pieces means this is a pretty easy to maintain mobile suit, not to mention the variety of weapons despite not being able to use beam weaponry other than a single saber, and the fact that it has a shotgun which is insane cause we all know shotguns are so powerful the other side would try to ban it, lastly lets not forget this suit managed to defeat every state of the art feddie suit in that colony and almost destroyed the Alex if not for its armor shielding, if there were two Kampfers in that fight the Alex would have lost, this mobile suit is insane
It's a special forces suit, the suit itself is actually pretty solid in terms of mobility and overall armament for close range ground combat or destroying the inside of a colony but the sacrifice for making a suit that can be smuggled and assembled in a modular fashion is armor.
The Kamfer has basically no armor to speak of, it doesn't even run a skirt to protect mobility, one hit from pretty much anything and it's fucking destroyed. Plus with the size of the generator it could use, the kamfer had no access to energy weapons, the late war introduction of gelgoog got the beam rifle into the fray; which is necessary for medium to long range space combat. Which is what mattered after the war for control on earth had been lost.
Saying the Kamfer is a high mobility type is an understatement, this thing is the definition of a glass cannon. It could theoretically run a beam but the drop in speed would cause it to be more likely to take a hit, and because it had no armor; well. You see why it runs the way it does.
It's a mobile suit that designed to be use for one purpose, fast and powerful hit and run ambush attacks piloted by special forces pilots who can bring out the strengths and reduce the weaknesses. Even then when taken by surprise the exceptional pilot of the Kamfer got killed by what is basically a rookie. Hit and run. When the kamfer was out of ammo it couldn't really do much else.
Side note, even if all of the above wasn't true. This suit was finished up less than a month from the end of the one year war, no joke it might have actually been two weeks or so. They had no time to produce the thing even if it qualified as a mainstay suit.
Zeon, much like Nazi Germany, focused a lot on making highly specialized machines to fit certain roles and toyed about with experimental concepts. Especially late in the war. Really it got to the point where the machines weren't the problem.
This Kampfer, one of two prototypes, was designed for a specific mission to blitz thru enemies and quickly exit the battleground. To achieve the objective its body armors were reduced and the armor weight reduced to allow hovering with a full armament. Disposable weapons were selected and in order to allow quick and discrete assembly, all were handheld options except for the beam saber.
If only the alex actually had a good pilot
Gellgoog was introduced in late 0079 as a multiuse, Beam armed MS that could compete against the basic GM that was turning the Zaku II and Dom into space debris.
Kampfer was a prototype MS designed for this mission in particular, plus beam weaponry was the rage in the 70s 😂
