    Pandorum is a bloody masterpiece. So is Event Horizon. Bring those kind of sci-fi horror movies back, and keep the bloody awful "Nun" and "Paranormal Activity" jumpscare movies!

    I am pretty sure I read that the "second skin" in the stasis pods are actually layers of dead skin that have accumulated over the years as the pods don't have any way to stop the natural replacement of skin cells. Pretty genious actually.

    • @falloutghoul1
      @falloutghoul1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Also kinda horrifying, considering that could lead to people becoming entombed in their own skin if it isn't peeled off regularly.

      How did he not get that? It's pretty obvious if you know anything about the human body.
      It's a really nice idea and shows a lot about the universes technology.
      It's not perfect, but they were in a hurry to get away. The tech used on the ship isn't this perfect scifi-tech that's almost magic, it has flaws and drawbacks, it breaks etc. The pods can't stop aging indefinitely.

    • @bitesizedsuprised3445
      @bitesizedsuprised3445 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      They weren't meant to stay in Cryo long enough for that to be a problem, hence the crew shifts. It's also a subtle nod to the fact that something is VERY wrong if they were left in stasis for that long.

    • @williamtimonen6814
      @williamtimonen6814 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      If theyre there for hundreds of years that would create alot ALOT more skin than just a second layer.

    • @fullmetalswcc
      @fullmetalswcc 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In a stasis pod there shouldn't be any dead skin. Since, people would die in the stasis.

    One of the touches I liked about the film was the leaking water every where. Usually in ships it's chalked up to condensation(see Alien) But in this movie it's just straight up water leaking into the hull from the ocean. Much like the algea on the walls it's a very subtle hint to where they are. This movie had so much love put into it.

    I think Dennis Quaid is one of the most underrated actors ever. He does comedy, drama, mystery, science-fiction, and horror, and does them all well.

    • @arthas640
      @arthas640 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      he's a top notch actor but never seems to headline any blockbuster movies or win any major awards. sometimes i think his appearances in cult movies and a few B-list movies has cemented him as a "B list actor" in Hollywoods mind despite him having A-list talent. sadly i've even heard him referred to as "a poor mans Harrison Ford"

    Watched this movie on a whim, didn't know a thing about it, and by the credit roll I was just blown away. Underappreciated science fiction masterpiece. I rank it up there with some of the best.

    some people say this is the spiritual sequel to event horizon and i tend to agree. they both have the same tone and deal with similar subjects, plus after the disaster of wormholes leading to hell dimension, humans figured they couldn't use that kind of technology for interstellar travel and conventional engines would have to do, which explains why they use nuclear engines instead. i really liked this movie when it came out and i managed to get myself one of the screen used props which was pretty cool

    • @deusdeaconReviews

      what prop was it if i may ask ?

    • @badrequest5596

      was one of the spears used by the hunters, if you can call it that. although i do scratch my head on the practical use of that thing. one end looks like an axe/scythe and the other end is a curved blade. looks cool but really unrealistic

    Oh, boy! This was one of those accidental films I watched while flipping through channels and man, am I ever glad I did. I thought the film had a few weak points, but the majority of it (most notably the atmosphere) worked so well that ignoring the flaws is easy. This was a great review of a favorite film.
    And, yes, Norman Reedus is in it for about as long as Robert Duvall was in Sling Blade. :D

  • @xen0bia
    @xen0bia 7 ปีที่แล้ว +35

    The ejection procedure makes sense when you think about it. If your ship is damaged and about to explode, you may want to give the people in the pods a chance to be rescued by another ship or something. Of course, if humanity is extinct nobody can come rescue you, but that was built into the design of the ship before then.
    PS: I had no clue this movie was supposed to have sequels. I'm kinda glad it didn't considering the track record of sequels in general. Pandorum is a good standalone movie.

    • @deusdeaconReviews
      @deusdeaconReviews  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You could argue that its to facilitate being rescued however, Making it in such a way, that they fire in all direction at the same time is kind of counter productive to a rescue effort especially when you consider the limited air supply and zero provisions that should be included with any kind of emergency craft.

    • @xen0bia
      @xen0bia 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh I agree on that point, it would've been smarter to have all the pods in a detachable compartment or something to keep them all together instead of scattering them all over the place.

      Deusdaecon Reviews it's likely the feature wasn't intended for Space use. The pods seemed durable and resistant to impacts, and as we see, air tight. It's possible it was originally for strictly atmospheric release rather than deep space. Such as if problems arise upon entry of a planet, the escapees have a chance to survive the impact. Or in rare cases, if the ship malfunctions and ends up in an ocean, the pods also help in that regard.
      However, I have one nitpick. The function is completely flawed without a radio beacon or perhaps other methods of tracking each individual pod so survivors can find eachother. Because each pod just holds ONE person (or two in the movie) and it isn't very likely they'll survive on their own.

    • @walruslatte6080
      @walruslatte6080 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AmaryInkawult I can believe that the rescue ship would be able to track them easily, either because they emit a signal or because they would show up on scans looking like pieces of wreckage and not, say, asteroid fragments.

  • @DemonBoy3223
    @DemonBoy3223 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I remember seeing this in my local Drive-In. I will admit I was a bit confused by what was going on in it, but I was still fascinated by the design of the spaceship interiors, and it was my first viewing of it, and it takes me multiple viewings to understand a movie like this. So upon watching it a few times on DVD I loved it. This is a movie that requires multiple viewings, but this is what happens when there are moviegoers who don't get it and instantly trash it after the first viewing, rather than giving it another chance.
    I would honestly have loved to had seen a trilogy out of this, each film different from the other instead of complete rehashes. Part 1 a sci-fi horror set on a spaceship, Part 2 a psychological thriller prequel about Gallo's rise, and Part 3 a sci-fi action-thriller set on Tanis, that'd been interesting. Shame.

      I understand your point but I disagree. Even the most furvorish hardcore fans and/or older reviewers I've met give this film some credit too (i.e. we are not over rating anything - it still has its flaws).
      It belongs in the same line as films such as Kill Command, Spectre, etc - not perfect yes, but with the small budget and bad marketing they had going into it they did a relatively good job.

    10:25 I think it makes sense to be able to eject the pods from a ship. If the ship was damaged beyond repair and on fire or about to blow up you could eject the pods and another ship could come collect them.
    In Pandorum they’re the last of humanity but if the ships were designed for transporting people regularly it makes sense. Using them as lifeboats

    • @deusdeaconReviews
      @deusdeaconReviews  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      but they're not lifeboats we see at the end they're not even water tight

  • @Witchsnitch666
    @Witchsnitch666 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    the evacuation into space kinda makes sense, when you remember that the whole thing is powered by a massive and volatile reactor, the ejection is a failsafe in case of a reactor meltdown

    • @deusdeaconReviews
      @deusdeaconReviews  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      So instead of exploding, people get to slowly suffocate in the void of space ? I don't understand what you mean, if it was something that could save peoples lives in case of emergency then it wouldn't be as big of a deal as we see it is when it gets used wrongly, It shows that if you fire these people into space they will die period no ifs or buts.

    I think Quaid has had the misfortune of being in a lot of great genre films that regardless of their success should have been bigger financial hits. Like Dreamscape, Innerspace and Frequency are all really great and original films or films thst do original films with older ideas that he puts his all in as an actor. Sure some of them may have been successful but I'd love to see a sequel or reboot to Dreamscape, hold Innerspace up to Gremlins in the exceptional works of the MASSIVELY under rated Joe Dante and while I'm excited for the upcoming Frequency show as I said I feel those are massively under rated films from an under rated actor. Also am I the only person who would love to see Quaid play Jay Garrick?

    • @deusdeaconReviews
      @deusdeaconReviews  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      yes indeed i can't but agree with everything you say Quaid is massively underrated and just has bad luck with great films that go nowhere.

    Maybe I'm thinking too deep, but an "all pod ejection button" might be necessary in case of catastrophic failure, or something like total impending ship annihilation. Would make sense to then eject everyone in hopes someone will make it and preserve human life rather than they all sit on a ship and die a fiery death.

    I happened to watch this movie when I woke up at 5 AM on a Christmas break from college. Was groggy and tired and flipping channels and got to this movie and saw Dennis Quaid and thought 'huh this must be something if a big actor like him is in it.' And then I kept watching and loved it. Was too groggy and morning grumpy so none of the scares worked on me which made the movie better for me as I could just focus on everything else. And this film made me LOVE Antje Traue with her character and performance. I was ecstatic when she got the role of Faora in Man of Steel.

    • @deusdeaconReviews

      Why would the sequels be exactly the same as the first ? like I said in the video the trilogy would've been

    Sequel to the Pandorum would be great. Colonist being hunted down by the hunters that managed to survive in that part of the ship that's above the sea level. So many possibilities to scare people (and even add some distraction with the local wildlife: "Nah ... it can't be a hunter, I'm pretty sure it was a "tiger" that rip that gut into the pieces, no need to worry about"). As for prequel I'm not sure if it would work. Earth would be destroyed at the end, so there wouldn't be any mystery about it. Well ... we would know what was the reason, but ... does it matter?

    When a mental illness (or other mental... stuff) causes physical symptoms, the symptoms are psychosomatic. A stress induced headache, for example, is psychosomatic. The need to have the ability to shoot out all the pods makes sense. If for some reason they needed to self destruct the ship or if the ships life support ect if failing. It at leasts gives the people in the pods a chance to be rescued, especially if they were able to make emergency calls prior to leaving the ship. Its like a cruise ship having life boats.

      yeah except the pods aren't life supported, we even saw at the end of the film they're not even water tight

    i think i read somewhere that Event Horizon takes place in the same universe and was the 'test' ship to see if they could get to Tanis in a lifetime, but seeing as the blackhole wormhole travel didn't work they were forced to make the Elysium instead that had rotations.

      well I’m pretty sure that a fan theory cause if that was in the production history I would’ve found it, also not a fan of that theory anyway because they very different films, Pandorum is at its essence a human story, event horizon is far wider in scope with a different idea behind it

    It could be possible to have a laser shaver. There are companies trying to build those things with lightwaves of a spectrum that attacks creatinin (hairs) but not the skin (like there are Lasers that can remove tattoos without damaging too much of the skin layers).

    You say its bad there isn't a sequel but it's probably a good thing because sequels tend to be bad most of the time with movies like this, not saying it's impossible for it to be good but I prefer this movie as a standalone, plus the ending is pretty final, at least i don't see a good story they could use that would have the same atmosphere and psychological horror this movie does well.

    I only learned about this movie from a recommendation from a co-worker a good few years ago. I enjoyed it, especially the first third and I didn't see the twist coming. It's a solid film with a likeable cast and I'm prepared to overlook the fact that it's a bit pulpy at times and that this idea is a very old one (Brian Aldiss' 'Non-Stop' is one of the best known versions).

    If the ship is going down and theres no hope in fixing it then you jettison all the freezer pop people in a vague hope that they might just get rescued somehow instead of for sure going down with the ship.

      I'm a reluctant fan of the walking dead, I watch the episode but find it both exhausting and exasperating that its just become an exercise in human misery. and yes I am aware of the COC game.
