I remember going through severe opiate withdrawals and saw this pop up in the movie section. Opiate withdrawals are all encompassing, but somehow this movie broke through that and ironically gave me peace for the two hours. I remember it so clearly and love this movie.

Many people struggle with stories unless they spell everything out for them. It's also part of why some bad, lazy films get seen as revolutionary. They say that they are, and the audience believes them.

If you like Pandorum, I highly recommend Robert A. Heinlein's 1941 classic novel "Orphans of the Sky," which Pandorum was clearly based on. Some people think that Pandorum was based on Brian Aldiss' 1958 novel Non-Stop, but that book was just a rip off of "Orphans of the Sky."

Pandorum's probably one of my favorite films. It's got that whole Dead-Space-like premise that I really enjoy - a ship is trapped in space, the main characters are stuck and need to get out, and the inside is full of hazards and enemies. There's not a whole lot of films that explore this concept but the few that do are pretty fun IMO.

    • @Shineinpoverty

I begin to realize that this is why people liked the first dead space so much. We need more movies/games like this.

Finally, a refreshingly honest review about "Pandorum."
    One I agree with 100%
When I first saw Ben Foster in, "Alpha Dog," I was not impressed, but after his performance in, "Pandorum," he's totally redeemed.
Smart movie with a great twist at the end. 👍

When I first saw this movie I loved it. The ending was to me brilliant and made sense. I did wonder why it looked like so few people survived from the pods coming up, but that made sense once I though about it and how long the ship had actually been sitting underwater and how long the mutants had been feeding on the peoples in the pods. Not sure though If I would want a sequel since it would either be the mutants survived or some kind of Pandora movie like sequel.

Glad to see this movie gets some love. I wasn't expecting much back then when I bought it on DVD but...damn, I was pleasantly suprised and enjoyed it very much. I like the whole premise of exploring space gone horribly wrong, and without any aliens or annoying interstellar-higherbeings-blackhole-time-travel-mumbo-jumbo, but keeping it simple (yet not stupid). And I really liked the twist in the end, I admit I did not see that coming (unlike, for example, the "ghost" in Interstellar...)
Of course I still wait for a movie that takes place AFTER we colonized a new world ... or a series about that (but not as boring as Earth 2 back in the days...)

+shockz16 I think a lot of times when people go into a big sci-fi type movie they want to "turn off their brain". So when the film presents itself intelligently and they have to pay attention, the first thing they do it call it stupid.

Some people don't like unforeseen twists because it makes them feel dumb. So, they lash out and say a movie is dumb. You see it all the time with films like Unbreakable or Cabin in the Woods. I enjoyed Pandorum, and really enjoy your videos. Keep it up.

I remember seeing the trailer for Pandorum a long time ago. I always thought the skin peeling part was pretty intense. It was nice getting to know this movie better. Thanks, man!
Also, speaking of science-fiction, I don't know if this qualifies but I personally think Cloud Atlas is one of the most underrated and polarizing films by the Wachowskis. Most critics didn't really know what to think of it when it first came out. I loved the multiple storylines and how they all connected and I absolutely adored the soundtrack of this movie. Feel free to take a look into it if you can.

Calling it a spiritual sequel to event horizon makes it even better too. Tbh, I don't need a sequel, but still think it deserves more recognition for a really cool concept and I think this video helps that. So thanks!

I won't go out of my way to say this was the best sci fi horror every made, but it was fresh. While using an "alien" like setting it managed to mold its own story. I rememebr when I first watched this and he opened the shutter doors on the bridge and it was just pitch black, I nearly shat myself. Couldn't imagine what it would be like to wake up from cryo to find your shift drifting (or at least they thought so) in a black abyss. At that moment, I'd imagine that is what it'd be like to descend into hell.

It still makes sense that people would complain about Norman Reedus being in the movie so briefly, because even though it was before walking dead, it was after Boondock Saints, which to this day has a sizable cult following.

    • @OnlyRoke
      @OnlyRoke 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

+benway20 sure, but it's just one cult movie with a mediocre sequel attached to it.. that's no reason to give a pre-TWD Reedus much more screentime. The sequel to Boondock Saints even came out after Pandorum.

+benway20 he was also post-Blade II. The guy was well known enough that it was strange only to see him briefly. I chalked it up to one of those clever cameos where you assume "oh, he's a pretty well known star so you know he'll make it through most of the film" and then... nothing.

Its got a *really* good concept, and great atmosphere. The plot does kind of fall apart towards the end, however.
Nadia is stabbed (rather severely, in the ribs) at one point, and the movie just kind of completely forgets about it a scene later. Some of the action scenes (especially involving the martial arts guy) are also a bit goofy, and come off as being superflous and out of sync with the rest of the film.
Again, though. Overall, its a really good flick. Just could have used a bit more polish in parts.

Something that really strikes me about both Pandorum and Event Horizon is the wonderful set design; how solid and real everything looks... how much actual practical work was done. So much artistry. I miss that in movies; back when they only used CGI when they couldn't do something for real.
These days, they use CGI as a shortcut, and you can just... see it in the visuals; you can see how half-arsed it is. Oh, sure, technically impressive a lot of the time. But creatively vacant.

I loved the movie when I saw it when it first came to theaters - it's my #1 favorite movie of all time. One thing I think you underplayed is the horror and paranoia ambiance. That combined with the eventual unfolding of events was chilling and perfect. I did like how you noticed the lighting colors - I didn't make any connections that way but again, the lighting was integral AF to set the mood, along with the amazing sound/music.

    Very interesting analysis, as always!
I, as a German, am proud of this movie. This is one of the movie that shows that filmmakers from my country are actually able to do good genre-movies (here in Germany, you can hier nearly always people complain that german movies generally suck! I'm not joking!). Unfortunately, this movie was an box-office-bomb and Christian Alvart had to return to Germany, where he since directed TV-films with Til Schweiger (urgh!). But "Pandorum" is, in my opinion, a great movie, and I'm pleased that you agree.
Though I wouldn't compare it to "Event Horizon", at least not in the first place. When I first watched it, it reminded me more of "The Descent". But yeah, the themes of madness and the architecture of the ship are similar to "Event Horizon". And I like the symbolism; especially with the colours. There actors were also good; and I think I fell in love with Antje Traue (who also comes from Germany ^^).
Very good, video. Keep up the great work!

I noticed the similarities to Event Horizon when I saw this for the first time as well, but didn't know Jeremy Bolt and Paul W.S. Anderson had anything to do with this until watching your video. Pandorum, another under-appreciated film that really deserved more attention from mainstream audiences.

I'm so glad you explored this movie - I reviewed it for a magazine years ago, and found it to be too derivative (The Descent, Event Horizon etc.). Now I understand that they we're actually going for it. I think the Biblical/Christian themes are actually very well done, since they're rather subtle, although they do say "Noahs Ark" out loud. The budget is also noticable - 33 million dollars, when a comedy movie here, 6-7 years later, would cost twice the ammount? Just wow.

I was really annoyed by the sound design of that movie. Every time I watch it I'm constantly turning the volume up and down. I thought the designs were awesome but unfortunately you couldn't see them because of all the darkness. (Compared to "Alien" for example, which is a "dark" film too but you can see all the great sets). I didn't like the twist at the end and the editing suffers heavily from the one-cut-every-0.23-seconds-disease combined with shaky-cam-disease. Takes the tension out of every action scene.
But still I don't think it's a bad movie. It just made some really bad choices and I seriously doubt that the only reason for it's poor box office is a bad ad campaign.
