As several folks have pointed out, this movie was in development pre-pandemic and was conceptualized as an allegory for climate change. Obviously I should have acknowledged that, though McKay has said that the pandemic altered some elements of the film and informed the making of it. Also, I said astrology instead of astronomy. Sorry.
We all have recency bias in ways. It’s perfectly normal to have the pandemic top of mind, especially when living in a country it’s had such an awful impact on (Australian, we’ve been fortunate to mitigate the worst effects - so far).
This film was actually in development before the pandemic- it was always meant to be a metaphor for climate change. But the pandemic has certainly added a whole new layer to it.
This movie is so much more than climate change and that's due to David Sirota. It's skewers the political system, culture/celebrity, activist co-option, money in politics, propaganda, the media culture and capitalism. David Sirota's impact is felt on much of the spot on realness of American politics that seems like it's satire but it's not.
Yeah, I think the movie was obviously originally supposed to be about climate change. But most of the production happened post-Covid, and I don't think the parallels were lost on Adam McKay as a screenwriter. There are so many on the nose references that I would be shocked if every line in the movie was written before March 2020. There's just no way.
the scene where timothee chalamet is talking about conspiracy theories around the asteroid and jennifer lawrence says “the reality is much more bleak, the politicians aren’t as smart as you give them credit for” seemed very covid to me

Went in 100% blind and absolutely loved the movie. As a Greek who's never been to the US but grew up swimming in US media, I loved the lambasting of both democrats and republicans, influencers, the media, anti-intellectuals, money-hungry corpos and everything else the movie lambasts. It feels exactly like what the last two years have felt!
Nah, the movie is way too granted. Everything they poke fun at, is obvious, so there's no charm, here. But, I like that you like it. Thank for the opinion! :-)
When they first introduced Chalemet's Yule as a character I was of the same mind, do we really need yet another character at this stage of the film? In the end though, I'm really glad they had him. I found he introduced some heart and grounding. This was a kid who was kinda a slacker, had moved past where his parents evangelical background had put him but had found his own faith and path and not one trying to push an idea on anyone else. It toned things back for me and the final scene with the family together was incredibly touching. After feeling pretty cynical because of the general nature of everyone I needed that tonal shift of someone that wasn't involved in all that had gone on and reminder of the vast majority of people just trying to get on with their lives. Great film and an unexpectedly thought provoking watch.
That’s actually a great point. His introduction was random and humorous at first but it ended up effectively changing the tone like you said. His character replaced the cynicism of jennifer Lawrence into actually accepting love in the end of time’s and he refused to allow her to cheapen it.
YES! Believe it or not his character stood out the most to me.. the scenes with the 2 of them were adorable. He was kinda refreshing. I watched the scene with him proposing to her a few times cause it was just sooo cute lol
I didn't laugh a lot, but holy shit, this is exactly how this scenario would play out in the real world. There would be politicians who would use this for political gains, there would some Musk/Bezos/Zuckerberg type who would think of something completely batshit insane and unproven to try over something scientifically sound, and a lot of people would not believe it even when the reality will hit them in the face. This is one of the best movies I've seen this year.

You know what im not seeing enough in these comments... is the fact that we have an original movie idea. The genre seems to hit right in the scifi/dark comedy area, and the story plot w/ ending is all something fresh that i enjoyed. It got some good laughs out of me and when the tone changed I was all in on the serious bits. Lawrence, DiCaprio, and Hill all nailed what they're characters are supposed to be and I'm gonna say this movie was an 8/10. Other characters had me pulling my hair out but i felt thats what they were going for so for that they succeeded.
This is no one close to original. The message is not original. Heck The Simpsons did it with their movie. Heck South Park did. These movies are repurposed over and over. We have so many movies telling us the same message. And you know what is constant? People will forget about this. They will praise it and never do anything about it. They will go to social media and talk about how they got the message of the movie thinking they’re smarter than everyone else when really they’re not. And the best part ? People will move and completely forgot about the message. They will live their mundane life of using technology made from slaves. Eating food that is causing issues in the environment. Our mundane lives. I guess that’s part of the movie? Humans are not care till it’s too late.
It is perhaps one of the least original movie ideas in recent memory, to be completely honest. "Modern society turns a blind eye to world-altering natural phenomenon that leads to the end/near end of humanity!". It's been done to death, and honestly, it's been done better. 6/10.
It's not supposed to be fluffy or easy to watch. It's shining light on the reality of what the world is. It's funny, it's sad, it's moving, and deserves a much higher rating than critics are giving it.
I just watched it. This was the most existentially challenging, painful to watch, hilarious, depressing, drawn out and fantastic movie I watched which came out this year. Honestly I can see why there is so much of a divide between critics. Great film. Quite different to most comedy’s. It actually kind of reminded me of the cornetto films at some points with the editing. Also Leonardo DiCaprio went HARD with his acting
I really liked it. Not sure if I'd say it's a comedy. I think it's a tradegy. It shows how easily controlled we are as a society. Each person already has enough stress, they just want to be entertained and can't be bothered with things they can't control. I don't think it's funny in a haha sense. I think it's funny in a ironic sense because it all just felt so familiar.
If it makes you laugh, it's a comedy. If it makes you cry, it's a tragedy. If it makes you angry, then maybe it hits close to home and what you care about. It can be all of the above, and differently for everyone.

To be honest i didn't watched this as a comedy film sure i laughed here and there but i just channeled DiCaprio and Lawrence's fear of impending doom. I was anxious whole movie in a good way and scary part is this not impossible to happen.
"this is not impossible to happen" ...you're joking, right? Every time an asteroid passes near the *moon* NASA is already ringing alarms, which is why we have early warning telescopes. As of right now, according to Technology Review, the biggest asteroid to fly near earth in the coming years was discovered in 2004 and will very close to earth... in 2029. And by "Close", I mean it won't even hit the satellites we have in orbit. The previous "near hit" was estimated to maybe happen in 2036, but that was changed in 2013 when a change in trajectory meant it wouldn't come close to earth to be a threat. Add to this the fact that Jupiter is such a massive center of gravity that attracts most large meteors before they become a threat to us, and this scenario just isn't plausible... especially when you put the moronic politics presented in the film which, believe or not, are entirely unrealistic... unless you believe most of humanity is made up of greedy idiots who would rather die than waste their money, instead of... oh... make a fortune saving the planet. Honestly, I really do not like this pretentious film and its self-proclaimed "global warming metaphor" that doesn't even make sense.
I like the comet being the protagonist, overcoming adversity and accomplishing its mission. A true hero for destroying these weak characters and that stupid version of earth.

I didn't even crack a smile watching it. It pushed me further into my already existent nihilistic depression, and it absolutely should. It's disturbingly accurate in It's portrayal on every level. Definitely one of the best movies I've seen in a long time.

I found this movie to be a 10 out of a 10. The cast enough is reason to watch, but the snarky script and willing delivery of each actor! There is not one single throw away line in the entire movie. Every scene is necessary. I laughed so hard when Ariana Grande let the AILF have it.

Well if you want a happy ending you can almost guarentee that the survivors likely didn't last very long. Considering they were likely politicians and wealthy elite who likely hadn't done much of note in years. These weren't the buildings, teachers, and scientists. So they likely died trying to figure out what to eat and where to sleep.
For all their technology, they didn’t think to bring clothes, weapons, tools aside from phones… most of them were going to be eaten by those birds unless they went back on the ship. And they were almost all old. How did they think they were going to save humanity if many of them are past the age to reproduce? They won’t last long for all their wealth and intellect. The hard truth is the rich need a bunch of serfs to work hard and keep them alive.
I am not an Adam McKay fan, but I’m weirdly excited about this one. The premise sounds brilliant. And its divisiveness gets me even more excited, because some of the most interesting films in the last few years have divided critics.I can’t wait

About that distracting "hairpiece": According to IMDB, it's actually Timothee's own hair. Apparently, he had grown it out during lockdown and Adam McKay thought it fit the character and asked him to keep it when he saw it over Zoom... Then again, I find it a bit hard to believe myself. Not because I think it looked unnatural but because it'd be really frustrating for the rest of us if he could really grow that much hair over such a short amount of time...
I watched this with my dad today and Tbh I really feel like this is the best acting I've every seen out of a movie! The part at the end with the dinner was so touching! And I could hear the raspiness in their voices, the slightly watery eyes, and then kind of shaking while trying to have a normal conversation while knowing they were gonna die any minute. I'm kind of surprised that I really liked it even though that being in that situation is my absolute worst fear. Knowing when, how, and where your gonna die. I think this movie was announced before the pandemic era, so it’s probably more related to climate change than to the pandemic. I’m sure McKay adapted it to be a little more timely though

It's just that the pandemic happened and made it clear how obviously doomed we are because even when there's very clear evidence that something is happening, people will only believe what they choose to believe. I thought the trailers looked really bad so I'm glad to see you liked it. I didn't think you would.

As someone who works in public health, I don't think I can physically bring myself to watch this movie. I have a feeling I'll love it, but, you know, maybe in 5-10 years (assuming the world's not totally f***ed)
Well, it's a great thing people like Bjorn Lomberg are out there. He's quite involved with the reality of climate change and has a far, far more optimistic view of the future of the world/mankind.
I'd like to mention how beautiful the movie is at times. The shots of the comet accompanied by the music by Nicholas Britelli brings an existential but soothing feel and makes you reflect on the movie and it's parallels to the real world.

The problem is that some of those shots are paired with some of the worst editing I have seen in any film. You know the editing must be bad when the Oscars say it's good.
i know its a movie but i feel bad for the protagonists that were trying to save the planet, in the end all they could do is accept the same fate as the rest of the doomed planet, when kate said "Im grateful that we tried", i felt that, and when the profssor said "we really did have everything, when you think about it". that broke me, putting myself at that dinner table knowing the events of the last 6 months, i almost cried, imagine an intelligent race goes extinct due to negligence and distractions, thats just messed up, entertaining, eye opening and unsettling
i did relate to that as well, especially when, for the last few years, i've been meeting and talking to people too convinced they are right, when in reality they had ZERO reasons for their beliefs.... and that's the sad part, not the politicians and their schemes, but the inability of the voters to make the right choice

I watched the trailer and was expecting it to be horrendous. I actually really enjoyed it! I’ll never judge a film by a trailer again. As a scientist myself, who hasn’t been listened to in recent years, I totally related! References to social media tendencies, politics and human nature are spot on, in a light hearted way
I saw 100% jobs in that. Not in the way that he spoke, but in the way that his followers receive his message. And buy his products. Musk too, but mostly in rushed execution of concepts and, again, his followers blind faith in "mining the comet". And buying his products. The end of the movie, with a 58% survival rate of the most useless people (and none that could actually perpetuate the human race) actually made me sad - those people who spent their savings in... buying their products. Only to have a bunch of out of shape and out of touch folk get eaten up by land pterodactyls. The only thing I found funny was that the AI predicted the prez's death accurately ;)
Yeah would have preferred the performance to not be a poor man's representation of someone who's neurodivergent but the concept of the character was brilliant.
what I liked about this movie is the Steve Job's type character tells Leo's character based off his data he is going to die alone. you can see from that moment in the movie is where his character shifts. he realises his mistakes in I guess being the government/social media puppet. how he was meant to die was he was going to stick the course and continue being a puppet all the way to the end. and when he gets that phone call he likely would have went and I would say he likely died in his pod
Yeah. 1 interpretation: the CEO was using reverse psychology on Leo to get him to be with his fam. The CEO's algorithm must be omniscient because otherwise how could he know about the bronteroc? But then why doesn't he save Earth? Because Earth's future is idiocracy

I LOVE that the critic score is split down the middle on this film. It's a total commentary on our society today as a whole with the impatient and schizophrenic cutting and the mildly unfocused plot and even down to the inclusion of a mid-credit scene AND a post-credit scene. The split critic rating adds to the reflection of society. I think this film is ingenious.
Shouldn't such reaction be horrifying instead of lovable? The movie literally tells that what they are doing is stupid. And instead of changing anything it's booed at with the premise "we just keep the bad news light here".

What stuck with me was J.Lawrence character wondering why the general charged them for free snacks. “Why on earth would he charge us” access to food and water should be free because it’s necessary to sustaining life. Paying for the labor that goes into making sure it’s clean and healthy is another factor. Anywho, even those things that are necessary (like healing Earth or destroying the comet) comes at a seemingly absurd costs (like losing money). It’s absurd to be that selfish / it’s absurd to be that selfless. Ofc I think to serve others (all life forms) is to serve the self, but some would disagree and Feel that they MUST get something out of the interaction. When does the tango between selflessness and selfishness end? Must we destroy earth and each other before we consider a balance? I think the “rich” has it figured out (ie they’ll build a bunker, cloud house, or spaceship), but what about the normies? What is in our best interest to ensure longevity in our life and future generations? I love this movie because In the end who really lived. Unless the escapees has workers AI or human, they would have to terraform and defend themselves and reproduce (a lot more work when they could have just destroyed the darn comet ☄️)
This is precisely why the "metaphor" does not work. "Healing the planet", climate change, global warming... it's not a meteor hurtling towards us that will guarantee a planet-wide extinction event. Every major prediction about climate change, be it the ice age of the 70s and 90s to the climate change of today, has been proven false. Even the "we have until 2032 to fix this" line isn't based on any actual information but the potential worst-case scenario should human emissions increase 3-fold in the next decade. Films like this that present themselves as an allegory or metaphor that make it out to be some blatant and clear and obvious issue that has a simple solution that would work if people "just weren't greedy" don't work because when the problem is visible and we know what can happen, we have historically pushed everything aside to try and mitigate it. Disaster relief, international aid to nations facing famines, private companies working to innovate and produce technology that has made things more efficient and less harmful to both humans and the rest of the planet. Yet this film pushes all that aside to try and present the problem as "humans bad because greed" instead of trying to focus on the real arguments had by people on both sides. When its metaphor fails, its comedy fails, and all you are left with is a dumb film whose entire humor relies on referencing the metaphor it is pushing and praying the audience agrees with it. That's it. That's the film.
The rich may ‘survive’ the first wave of destruction but they won’t last because they are not skilled enough to survive long term, and they will be too selfish to protect the people they will need to help them keep surviving. The rich only survive because they rely on the labour and skill of others to do the work for them. Think they can grow food on their own? Build shelters? Create new inventions and technology? And most of them will be too old to reproduce and keep humanity alive. Without a population to exploit, they’ll be dead within five years tops.
I love when Dan reviews divisive movies as I find he usually puts a strong, fair, and considered opinion out there. Thank you for the video. And let's be honest on the Covid v climate change deal, if you saw it it applied really well to both.

Critics are naturally gonna hate this movie, it’s super critical of Hollywood and the upper class. It’s critical of everybody. It’s a critique on the state of our society, watch it with an open mind and don’t be turned off if it shits on something you believe in, because chances are it’s not really about that

The scene when Leo finally loses it is brilliant. You can imagine in real life this is how he would love to react at climate changes meetings and conferences he goes to.

While it was certainly there. I saw it way more of an indictment on public consciousness, corporate greed, and our national leaders really not giving a shit about people. You can say "climate change!" But the lackluster response to climate change is just a symptom of all of the above, while the root is the cause of many more issues than climate change. The Democratic leaders don't give a shit about people just as much as Republican leaders. It's all a stupid game they play for control, power, and money while the corporations just buy their votes and laws in order to make more. Damn the poor, damn the violence and division, me and my constituents (the people donating millions to campaigns) got ours, fuck everyone else.
I didn't laugh... I didn't even know this movie was classified as a comedy. I watched in utter amazement of how accurate this movie is (albeit over the top at times). This film is as you said probably made as a primal scream to perhaps introduce the perspective of maybe looking past your own agenda to take a look at the big picture. Great review, friend.

Thank you for this review. I watched it before hearing any reviews on Christmas night and thought it was sharp and appropriate for the times we are in. I was blown away by all the negative reviews. I can't even rationalize those takes. Great performances and a strong message.
I think this movie hilighted the stupidity, absurdity , and blindness of the human race right now in the world we live in. it DOES hit too close to home. Because this is exactly what would be happening in this situation. Our morals are shit, the way we treat one another is shit, and unless we literally look up, all humanity is going to be lost.
We live in a post-subtlety society, and post satire too. We live in a world where those little segments at the ends of the old He-Man and Captain Planet cartoons were not obvious enough, and not on the nose enough, to get their message across. There is no point in making a movie with a subtle point anymore, if a director wants to lead the audience to think then he or she or they better be prepared to beat it into them with a hammer, possibly literally.
To preface this I do love this movie. But it’s obviously poking at Trump. Imagery with Streep’s character wearing red and trucker hats. Yes this was McKays intent. And it’s fine but let’s not pretend that’s not happening

@@CardioCareWellness Raising taxes alone will not solve the problem; however, taxes on the products according to their climate footprint could be a solution. It's more about the regulations by the governments for big corporations to pollute less or use techniques to reduce the emission, but that will decrease profits for these corporations. The scientific community has enough solutions, but implementation is dependent much on the voting patterns, appeasement of communities, funding in elections from big corporations for the elected parties, and willingness to pay for it as it is a global phenomenon.

@Jo Ol While you're not wrong, I don't think it should be controversial that film critique is divided. Like you don't have to be an intellectual to understand the point and purpose of this film, it pretty much wears its message on its sleeve, but I will admit its a very frustrating watch. I would compare this film to a book like Catcher in the Rye, in that you can acknowledge that there are many great elements to it, and it for the most parts deserves whatever accolades it has acquired, but that still doesn't mean that you are discredited in your opinions for hating it because you think it was an absolute chore to get through due to how enjoyable the experience is.
I saw it and I LOVED it. Me too, I laughed more than in any other movie in 2021, for sure Top 10 this year, and I am puzzled with the mixed response. Just FYI: the movie was written in 2019 and it is more about global warming but hey, I also thought it was about Covid while watching it.
Though the movie has not been done nicely, I would say that the movie gave a moral lesson about how the love of money can blind some politicians and tech people that run big companies, which can cause them make wrong decisions that can negatively impact the lives of people, environment, countries, and even the world as a whole. This movie is a warning to take seriously and ponder on.
And what about all the people that were more worried about the celebs relationship? If you take anything away from this movie it should be to do your own research because odds are, what you are being fed is not the truth.
Greatest masterpiece I've ever seen.... Needs to be film of the century! I was pretty hopeful for a decent yet mildly depressing reality similar to the movie Seeking a Friend for the End of the World...which was great but this goes into greater detail on most levels I had always been curious about in a scenario where our species faces mass-extinction and how hilariously doomed we all are for now. This just blew my mind. Rating it 99.87% ;) Better than Chernobyl, but this is basically best-case scenario, reality will be so much worse..oops SPOILER lol I cannot believe I'm actually seeing a new, modern-era, well-made and detailed sequel to Idiocracy but with a twist on the potential end of the entire world due to an extinction-level event. And the grim reality that human beings on this planet are greedy, delusional, ignorant, cruel and simultaneously beautiful kinds of organisms. It's one of those great films where the acting is fantastic, and the mask of modern society and specifically a focus on USA growing capitalist-corporate-fascism is well documented and the comedy is masterfully presented. I am watching this on Christmas after having a great night with family during these dark times themselves. And having experienced the last 15 years of insanity that all levels of government on this planet express...along with growing corporate power and cultural-division as different political systems influence society itself through the evolution of technology... This is some Black Mirror-level sh** we're talkin' here! I always wonder/worry about humanity literally making a movie about 'saving the planet' in it's final moments, and this movie even brilliantly illustrates that with the film within the film "Total Devastation" LOL so funny and amazing, after thousands of movies and an addiction to watchi
I loved each character played aspects of the different generational responses as well. Specifically the two scientists. Appeared to handle it some what different and yet they had the same arc

As a non-American here (Malaysian Muslim) if you noticed in the movie, most of the countries outside the US took the matter way more seriously; while the US glamorise it, tried to money grab profits from it, politicised it, and of course made it all about jokes on the matter. The movie has some high points, but it really just seemed like the manifestation of those cliche Twitter/fb posts of people thinking they're being clever by constantly repeating "Omg Idiocracy is a documentary now". Then, while most of the movie can be given the benefit of the doubt of being politically ambiguous, the last act was so on the nose "orange man bad" that it ruined everything before it
I saw this in theaters yesterday. I tought it was one of the best films of the year. I actually thought that the meteor was a metafor for climate change. Because in the beginning of the film nobody takes it serious. The president doesn't think its real and then lies to her folowers about it. And i think the ending is perfect. And the weird thing was is that there were only 3 people in the theater including me. So that was a very weird experience.
It was definitely on the nose but I’ve never left a movie with that kind of existential analysis going on in my brain. It’s a sad commentary that this is 100% how society would react in this situation. I genuine loved it, Leo proves again he can literally do absolutely any role perfectly.
I like a movie with balls. That doesn't try to please anyone and actively makes you sweat out of frustration or fear. That isn't afraid to break the usual movie style This movie has balls. Big balls.

I honestly loved this movie. These blunt messages are extremely needed. Personally I don´t think is funny, but instead a very serious movie, maybe that's why is long. Maybe if the film is deviding it's making its work. It should be deviding. That's the real value of it.

The reason it's "too on the nose" is that we have gotten to the point where we can't parody ourselves. In fact, that is WHY this movie is as good as it is. It should also be a wake up call to the normies.
Just finished it and I loved it. Haven’t launch so hard this year during any movie. Great movie! I think that creators spend some time on social media lately. For me it was funny as hell and brutal and real at the same time. Just like this wonderful reality that we are living in.
Mark Rylan's "weird" character is perfect for this film, no matter how many times he may have used it in the past. As a matter of fact, I thought his performance was one of he standouts of the film.

Its a comedy in the same way Dr. Strangelove is one: It just overexagerates the crazyness of our society until it hurts. Some examples: Politicians debating whether 99.76% should be framed as 70% or 60%. A news reporter saying the comet cant be real because the stock market is going up. A tech guru talking about ending world hunger using rare minerals. Dr. Mindy not even beeing suprised there is an evacuation shuttle for the wealthy, because of course there is. Shovels beeing sold for 5k dollars a piece. If thats not your humor, thats fine. But there sure are many jokes.
My favorite movie definitely, Haven't seen anything like this in a long time. Actually had me in tears at the end of the movie. Just realizing what we're losing. How people just don't care, Really reminds me of the movie idiocracy.

In the beginning I thought "Ah, they're making fun of the current administration", then later on I was like "Hm, I think they're making fun of the previous one!". Then towards the end I started to understand that they're making fun of both sides and the society in general and it's up to the viewer to take whatever they want from this movie. In my opinion, the cast was ok, there are some actors that I kinda dislike, the acting was decent and it made me laugh out loud quite a few times. One thing that I really appreciated was the fact that I didn't get the LGBTQ propaganda shoved in to my face. It was there, it was mentioned but no more than anything else in the movie and it was refreshing to see. Overall, I see it as a new version of "Idiocracy" but less "over-the-top" and more accurate in relation to the current state of our society. I think it was very well done; it can be enjoyed by people from all sides and the ending was absolutely fenomenal!
@@billiehicks1864 I understand exactly what you're saying and I'm well aware of everything you mentioned. Knowing all that and how the Hollywood "operates", the way I look at this movie is as a simple piece of entertainment. A big giveaway is the fact that they gained access to an actual warship (unless it was CGI) to film a few scenes. People in the know are aware of the trade-offs for having such access.
Though the criticisms of politicians and pop culture are eerily accurate, I do think that with a planet ending comet scenario, we would see less greed and division in handling the threat. Whereas the pandemic poses a threat that is not very imposing for the majority of the population and climate change is a threat that people cannot see and do not think will impact them directly, but maybe more so eventually to their decendants. A planet ending comet in 6 months is an entirely different level of threat. That being said, I appreciated the humor here.

"Don't Look Up" is an okay movie which should have been great. The premise was good but the director intentionally made the movie "too dumb" or as Dan says too on the nose". I don't feel it hits too close to home. I started to check out several times but it was intelligent and relevant enough to keep me hanging on till the end. I feel like the director should have toned down some of the exaggerated characters like the Chief of Staff and the astronaut dude. But then I guess toning it down wouldn't have been true to the directors vision.

As several folks have pointed out, this movie was in development pre-pandemic and was conceptualized as an allegory for climate change. Obviously I should have acknowledged that, though McKay has said that the pandemic altered some elements of the film and informed the making of it. Also, I said astrology instead of astronomy. Sorry.

We all have recency bias in ways. It’s perfectly normal to have the pandemic top of mind, especially when living in a country it’s had such an awful impact on (Australian, we’ve been fortunate to mitigate the worst effects - so far).
This film was actually in development before the pandemic- it was always meant to be a metaphor for climate change. But the pandemic has certainly added a whole new layer to it.
This movie is so much more than climate change and that's due to David Sirota. It's skewers the political system, culture/celebrity, activist co-option, money in politics, propaganda, the media culture and capitalism. David Sirota's impact is felt on much of the spot on realness of American politics that seems like it's satire but it's not.

Yeah, I think the movie was obviously originally supposed to be about climate change. But most of the production happened post-Covid, and I don't think the parallels were lost on Adam McKay as a screenwriter. There are so many on the nose references that I would be shocked if every line in the movie was written before March 2020. There's just no way.
the scene where timothee chalamet is talking about conspiracy theories around the asteroid and jennifer lawrence says “the reality is much more bleak, the politicians aren’t as smart as you give them credit for” seemed very covid to me

Went in 100% blind and absolutely loved the movie. As a Greek who's never been to the US but grew up swimming in US media, I loved the lambasting of both democrats and republicans, influencers, the media, anti-intellectuals, money-hungry corpos and everything else the movie lambasts. It feels exactly like what the last two years have felt!

When they first introduced Chalemet's Yule as a character I was of the same mind, do we really need yet another character at this stage of the film? In the end though, I'm really glad they had him. I found he introduced some heart and grounding. This was a kid who was kinda a slacker, had moved past where his parents evangelical background had put him but had found his own faith and path and not one trying to push an idea on anyone else. It toned things back for me and the final scene with the family together was incredibly touching. After feeling pretty cynical because of the general nature of everyone I needed that tonal shift of someone that wasn't involved in all that had gone on and reminder of the vast majority of people just trying to get on with their lives. Great film and an unexpectedly thought provoking watch.
That’s actually a great point. His introduction was random and humorous at first but it ended up effectively changing the tone like you said. His character replaced the cynicism of jennifer Lawrence into actually accepting love in the end of time’s and he refused to allow her to cheapen it.
YES! Believe it or not his character stood out the most to me.. the scenes with the 2 of them were adorable. He was kinda refreshing. I watched the scene with him proposing to her a few times cause it was just sooo cute lol
I didn't laugh a lot, but holy shit, this is exactly how this scenario would play out in the real world. There would be politicians who would use this for political gains, there would some Musk/Bezos/Zuckerberg type who would think of something completely batshit insane and unproven to try over something scientifically sound, and a lot of people would not believe it even when the reality will hit them in the face.

You know what im not seeing enough in these comments... is the fact that we have an original movie idea. The genre seems to hit right in the scifi/dark comedy area, and the story plot w/ ending is all something fresh that i enjoyed. It got some good laughs out of me and when the tone changed I was all in on the serious bits. Lawrence, DiCaprio, and Hill all nailed what they're characters are supposed to be and I'm gonna say this movie was an 8/10. Other characters had me pulling my hair out but i felt thats what they were going for so for that they succeeded.

This is no one close to original. The message is not original. Heck The Simpsons did it with their movie. Heck South Park did. These movies are repurposed over and over. We have so many movies telling us the same message. And you know what is constant? People will forget about this. They will praise it and never do anything about it. They will go to social media and talk about how they got the message of the movie thinking they’re smarter than everyone else when really they’re not. And the best part ? People will move and completely forgot about the message. They will live their mundane life of using technology made from slaves. Eating food that is causing issues in the environment. It is perhaps one of the least original movie ideas in recent memory, to be completely honest. "Modern society turns a blind eye to world-altering natural phenomenon that leads to the end/near end of humanity!". It's been done to death, and honestly, it's been done better. 6/10.
It's not supposed to be fluffy or easy to watch. It's shining light on the reality of what the world is. It's funny, it's sad, it's moving, and deserves a much higher rating than critics are giving it.

I just watched it. This was the most existentially challenging, painful to watch, hilarious, depressing, drawn out and fantastic movie I watched which came out this year. Honestly I can see why there is so much of a divide between critics. Great film. Quite different to most comedy’s. It actually kind of reminded me of the cornetto films at some points with the editing. Also Leonardo DiCaprio went HARD with his acting

I really liked it. Not sure if I'd say it's a comedy. I think it's a tradegy. It shows how easily controlled we are as a society. Each person already has enough stress, they just want to be entertained and can't be bothered with things they can't control. I don't think it's funny in a haha sense. I think it's funny in a ironic sense because it all just felt so familiar.
If it makes you laugh, it's a comedy. If it makes you cry, it's a tragedy. If it makes you angry, then maybe it hits close to home and what you care about. It can be all of the above, and differently for everyone.
It's satire. It condenses and magnifies societal problems, which mainly boils down to the failure of selfishness and greed on display.

To be honest i didn't watched this as a comedy film sure i laughed here and there but i just channeled DiCaprio and Lawrence's fear of impending doom. I was anxious whole movie in a good way and scary part is this not impossible to happen.

...you're joking, right? Every time an asteroid passes near the *moon* NASA is already ringing alarms, which is why we have early warning telescopes. As of right now, according to Technology Review, the biggest asteroid to fly near earth in the coming years was discovered in 2004 and will very close to earth... in 2029. And by "Close", I mean it won't even hit the satellites we have in orbit. The previous "near hit" was estimated to maybe happen in 2036, but that was changed in 2013 when a change in trajectory meant it wouldn't come close to earth to be a threat.
Add to this the fact that Jupiter is such a massive center of gravity that attracts most large meteors before they become a threat to us, and this scenario just isn't plausible... especially when you put the moronic politics presented in the film which, believe or not, are entirely unrealistic... unless you believe most of humanity is made up of greedy idiots who would rather die than waste their money, instead of... oh... make a fortune saving the planet.
Honestly, I really do not like this pretentious film and its self-proclaimed "global warming metaphor" that doesn't even make sense.

I found this movie to be a 10 out of a 10. The cast enough is reason to watch, but the snarky script and willing delivery of each actor! There is not one single throw away line in the entire movie. Every scene is necessary. I laughed so hard when Ariana Grande let the AILF have it.

Well if you want a happy ending you can almost guarentee that the survivors likely didn't last very long. Considering they were likely politicians and wealthy elite who likely hadn't done much of note in years. These weren't the buildings, teachers, and scientists. So they likely died trying to figure out what to eat and where to sleep.
For all their technology, they didn’t think to bring clothes, weapons, tools aside from phones… most of them were going to be eaten by those birds unless they went back on the ship. And they were almost all old. How did they think they were going to save humanity if many of them are past the age to reproduce? They won’t last long for all their wealth and intellect. The hard truth is the rich need a bunch of serfs to work hard and keep them alive.

I am not an Adam McKay fan, but I’m weirdly excited about this one. The premise sounds brilliant. And its divisiveness gets me even more excited, because some of the most interesting films in the last few years have divided critics.I can’t wait

Apparently, he had grown it out during lockdown and Adam McKay thought it fit the character and asked him to keep it when he saw it over Zoom... Then again, I find it a bit hard to believe myself. Not because I think it looked unnatural but because it'd be really frustrating for the rest of us if he could really grow that much hair over such a short amount of time...
I watched this with my dad today and Tbh I really feel like this is the best acting I've every seen out of a movie! The part at the end with the dinner was so touching! And I could hear the raspiness in their voices, the slightly watery eyes, and then kind of shaking while trying to have a normal conversation while knowing they were gonna die any minute. I'm kind of surprised that I really liked it even though that being in that situation is my absolute worst fear.

I think this movie was announced before the pandemic era, so it’s probably more related to climate change than to the pandemic. I’m sure McKay adapted it to be a little more timely though
I thought this film was a metaphor for climate change. Iirc, it was conceptualized before the pandemic. It's just that the pandemic happened and made it clear how obviously doomed we are because even when there's very clear evidence that something is happening, people will only believe what they choose to believe.

As someone who works in public health, I don't think I can physically bring myself to watch this movie. I have a feeling I'll love it, but, you know, maybe in 5-10 years (assuming the world's not totally f***ed)

I'd like to mention how beautiful the movie is at times. The shots of the comet accompanied by the music by Nicholas Britelli brings an existential but soothing feel and makes you reflect on the movie and it's parallels to the real world.

The problem is that some of those shots are paired with some of the worst editing I have seen in any film. You know the editing must be bad when the Oscars say it's good.
i know its a movie but i feel bad for the protagonists that were trying to save the planet, in the end all they could do is accept the same fate as the rest of the doomed planet, when kate said "Im grateful that we tried", i felt that, and when the profssor said "we really did have everything, when you think about it". that broke me, putting myself at that dinner table knowing the events of the last 6 months, i almost cried, imagine an intelligent race goes extinct due to negligence and distractions, thats just messed up, entertaining, eye opening and unsettling
i did relate to that as well, especially when, for the last few years, i've been meeting and talking to people too convinced they are right, when in reality they had ZERO reasons for their beliefs.... and that's the sad part, not the politicians and their schemes, but the inability of the voters to make the right choice

I watched the trailer and was expecting it to be horrendous. I actually really enjoyed it! I’ll never judge a film by a trailer again. As a scientist myself, who hasn’t been listened to in recent years, I totally related! References to social media tendencies, politics and human nature are spot on, in a light hearted way

As someone who's never seen Mark Rylance before, I thought he was spot on as a satirized big tech billionaire, evoking Elon Musk and Steve Jobs.
I saw 100% jobs in that. Not in the way that he spoke, but in the way that his followers receive his message. And buy his products.
Musk too, but mostly in rushed execution of concepts and, again, his followers blind faith in "mining the comet". And buying his products.
The end of the movie, with a 58% survival rate of the most useless people (and none that could actually perpetuate the human race) actually made me sad - those people who spent their savings in... buying their products. Only to have a bunch of out of shape and out of touch folk get eaten up by land pterodactyls.
The only thing I found funny was that the AI predicted the prez's death accurately ;)

what I liked about this movie is the Steve Job's type character tells Leo's character based off his data he is going to die alone.
you can see from that moment in the movie is where his character shifts. he realises his mistakes in I guess being the government/social media puppet.
how he was meant to die was he was going to stick the course and continue being a puppet all the way to the end. and when he gets that phone call he likely would have went and I would say he likely died in his pod

I LOVE that the critic score is split down the middle on this film. It's a total commentary on our society today as a whole with the impatient and schizophrenic cutting and the mildly unfocused plot and even down to the inclusion of a mid-credit scene AND a post-credit scene. The split critic rating adds to the reflection of society. I think this film is ingenious.

The movie literally tells that what they are doing is stupid. And instead of changing anything it's booed at with the premise "we just keep the bad news light here".

What stuck with me was J.Lawrence character wondering why the general charged them for free snacks.
“Why on earth would he charge us”
access to food and water should be free because it’s necessary to sustaining life. Paying for the labor that goes into making sure it’s clean and healthy is another factor.
Anywho, even those things that are necessary (like healing Earth or destroying the comet) comes at a seemingly absurd costs (like losing money). It’s absurd to be that selfish / it’s absurd to be that selfless.
Ofc I think to serve others (all life forms) is to serve the self, but some would disagree and Feel that they MUST get something out of the interaction.
When does the tango between selflessness and selfishness end? Must we destroy earth and each other before we consider a balance? I think the “rich” has it figured out (ie they’ll build a bunker, cloud house, or spaceship), but what about the normies? What is in our best interest to ensure longevity in our life and future generations? I love this movie because In the end who really lived. Unless the escapees has workers AI or human, they would have to terraform and defend themselves and reproduce (a lot more work when they could have just destroyed the darn comet ☄️)
This is precisely why the "metaphor" does not work. "Healing the planet", climate change, global warming... it's not a meteor hurtling towards us that will guarantee a planet-wide extinction event. Every major prediction about climate change, be it the ice age of the 70s and 90s to the climate change of today, has been proven false. Even the "we have until 2032 to fix this" line isn't based on any actual information but the potential worst-case scenario should human emissions increase 3-fold in the next decade.
Films like this that present themselves as an allegory or metaphor that make it out to be some blatant and clear and obvious issue that has a simple solution that would work if people "just weren't greedy" don't work because when the problem is visible and we know what can happen, we have historically pushed everything aside to try and mitigate it. Disaster relief, international aid to nations facing famines, private companies working to innovate and produce technology that has made things more efficient and less harmful to both humans and the rest of the planet.
Yet this film pushes all that aside to try and present the problem as "humans bad because greed" instead of trying to focus on the real arguments had by people on both sides.
When its metaphor fails, its comedy fails, and all you are left with is a dumb film whose entire humor relies on referencing the metaphor it is pushing and praying the audience agrees with it.
That's it. That's the film.
He simply charged them, because he may think they should pay. Or more likely, he is very greedy and thats it.
The rich may ‘survive’ the first wave of destruction but they won’t last because they are not skilled enough to survive long term, and they will be too selfish to protect the people they will need to help them keep surviving. The rich only survive because they rely on the labour and skill of others to do the work for them. Think they can grow food on their own? Build shelters? Create new inventions and technology? And most of them will be too old to reproduce and keep humanity alive. Without a population to exploit, they’ll be dead within five years tops.

No, I quite enjoyed it. My politics mostly align with the film’s. I was surprised to see how many other critics who also agreed with the message still said it was a bad movie. It certainly wasn't subtle, but some of the satire was SO dead-on and biting.
The scene when Leo finally loses it is brilliant. You can imagine in real life this is how he would love to react at climate changes meetings and conferences he goes to.

The fact that people can watch this entire film and not recognize it as an allegory for climate change is depressing.
While it was certainly there. I saw it way more of an indictment on public consciousness, corporate greed, and our national leaders really not giving a shit about people.
You can say "climate change!" But the lackluster response to climate change is just a symptom of all of the above, while the root is the cause of many more issues than climate change.
The Democratic leaders don't give a shit about people just as much as Republican leaders. It's all a stupid game they play for control, power, and money while the corporations just buy their votes and laws in order to make more. I didn't laugh... I didn't even know this movie was classified as a comedy. I watched in utter amazement of how accurate this movie is (albeit over the top at times). This film is as you said probably made as a primal scream to perhaps introduce the perspective of maybe looking past your own agenda to take a look at the big picture. Great review, friend.

Thank you for this review. I watched it before hearing any reviews on Christmas night and thought it was sharp and appropriate for the times we are in. I was blown away by all the negative reviews. I can't even rationalize those takes. Great performances and a strong message.
I think this movie hilighted the stupidity, absurdity , and blindness of the human race right now in the world we live in. it DOES hit too close to home. Because this is exactly what would be happening in this situation. Our morals are shit, the way we treat one another is shit, and unless we literally look up, all humanity is going to be lost.
We live in a post-subtlety society, and post satire too. We live in a world where those little segments at the ends of the old He-Man and Captain Planet cartoons were not obvious enough, and not on the nose enough, to get their message across. There is no point in making a movie with a subtle point anymore, if a director wants to lead the audience to think then he or she or they better be prepared to beat it into them with a hammer, possibly literally.

It's more about the regulations by the governments for big corporations to pollute less or use techniques to reduce the emission, but that will decrease profits for these corporations. The scientific community has enough solutions, but implementation is dependent much on the voting patterns, appeasement of communities, funding in elections from big corporations for the elected parties, and willingness to pay for it as it is a global phenomenon.

@Jo Ol While you're not wrong, I don't think it should be controversial that film critique is divided. Like you don't have to be an intellectual to understand the point and purpose of this film, it pretty much wears its message on its sleeve, but I will admit its a very frustrating watch. I would compare this film to a book like Catcher in the Rye, in that you can acknowledge that there are many great elements to it, and it for the most parts deserves whatever accolades it has acquired, but that still doesn't mean that you are discredited in your opinions for hating it because you think it was an absolute chore to get through due to how enjoyable the experience is.

I saw it and I LOVED it. Me too, I laughed more than in any other movie in 2021, for sure Top 10 this year, and I am puzzled with the mixed response. Just FYI: the movie was written in 2019 and it is more about global warming but hey, I also thought it was about Covid while watching it.

I thought it was pretty good. Could have been trimmed down by maybe 20 minutes, but that's ok. Didn't really notice Chalemet's Wig.
Though the movie has not been done nicely, I would say that the movie gave a moral lesson about how the love of money can blind some politicians and tech people that run big companies, which can cause them make wrong decisions that can negatively impact the lives of people, environment, countries, and even the world as a whole. This movie is a warning to take seriously and ponder on.
And what about all the people that were more worried about the celebs relationship? If you take anything away from this movie it should be to do your own research because odds are, what you are being fed is not the truth.

I was pretty hopeful for a decent yet mildly depressing reality similar to the movie Seeking a Friend for the End of the World...which was great but this goes into greater detail on most levels I had always been curious about in a scenario where our species faces mass-extinction and how hilariously doomed we all are for now.
This just blew my mind. Rating it 99.87% ;) Better than Chernobyl, but this is basically best-case scenario, reality will be so much worse..oops SPOILER lol
I cannot believe I'm actually seeing a new, modern-era, well-made and detailed sequel to Idiocracy but with a twist on the potential end of the entire world due to an extinction-level event. And the grim reality that human beings on this planet are greedy, delusional, ignorant, cruel and simultaneously beautiful kinds of organisms.
It's one of those great films where the acting is fantastic, and the mask of modern society and specifically a focus on USA growing capitalist-corporate-fascism is well documented and the comedy is masterfully presented.
I am watching this on Christmas after having a great night with family during these dark times themselves. And having experienced the last 15 years of insanity that all levels of government on this planet express...along with growing corporate power and cultural-division as different political systems influence society itself through the evolution of technology... This is some Black Mirror-level sh** we're talkin' here!

The movie has some high points, but it really just seemed like the manifestation of those cliche Twitter/fb posts of people thinking they're being clever by constantly repeating "Omg Idiocracy is a documentary now". Then, while most of the movie can be given the benefit of the doubt of being politically ambiguous, the last act was so on the nose "orange man bad" that it ruined everything before it
I saw this in theaters yesterday. I tought it was one of the best films of the year. I actually thought that the meteor was a metafor for climate change. Because in the beginning of the film nobody takes it serious. The president doesn't think its real and then lies to her folowers about it. And i think the ending is perfect. And the weird thing was is that there were only 3 people in the theater including me. So that was a very weird experience.
I must be a masochist, cuz this movie was very painful to watch due to being so on point, and I really appreciated it for that.
It was definitely on the nose but I’ve never left a movie with that kind of existential analysis going on in my brain. It’s a sad commentary that this is 100% how society would react in this situation. I genuine loved it, Leo proves again he can literally do absolutely any role perfectly.

Granted, I've been looking forward to it and believe all actors did their due diligence and beyond. That's it. That's all I've got for now. Not because it deserves less but because I want to see that a critical audience should see it in this time capsule we call life. Merry Christmas all. Happy holidays to everyone
In the beginning I thought "Ah, they're making fun of the current administration", then later on I was like "Hm, I think they're making fun of the previous one!". Then towards the end I started to understand that they're making fun of both sides and the society in general and it's up to the viewer to take whatever they want from this movie. In my opinion, the cast was ok, there are some actors that I kinda dislike, the acting was decent and it made me laugh out loud quite a few times. One thing that I really appreciated was the fact that I didn't get the LGBTQ propaganda shoved in to my face. It was there, it was mentioned but no more than anything else in the movie and it was refreshing to see. Overall, I see it as a new version of "Idiocracy" but less "over-the-top" and more accurate in relation to the current state of our society. I think it was very well done; it can be enjoyed by people from all sides and the ending was absolutely fenomenal!
@@billiehicks1864 I understand exactly what you're saying and I'm well aware of everything you mentioned. Knowing all that and how the Hollywood "operates", the way I look at this movie is as a simple piece of entertainment. A big giveaway is the fact that they gained access to an actual warship (unless it was CGI) to film a few scenes. People in the know are aware of the trade-offs for having such access.

Though the criticisms of politicians and pop culture are eerily accurate, I do think that with a planet ending comet scenario, we would see less greed and division in handling the threat. Whereas the pandemic poses a threat that is not very imposing for the majority of the population and climate change is a threat that people cannot see and do not think will impact them directly, but maybe more so eventually to their decendants.
A planet ending comet in 6 months is an entirely different level of threat. That being said, I appreciated the humor here.
Great review! Nailed it though I think it's more about climate change than the pandemic, but both are so similar as far as the government response. Followed & looking forward to more
I loved this movie, it was absolutely beautiful.
Awesome review as always, Dan - I can definitely tell where you would have thought this was about the pandemic as opposed to Climate Change, but I think the fact that you could apply the lessons to multiple boils on the ass of humanity shows how well the points are hitting home. Humanity is really doomed, but at least this movie can point that out with some comedy.

Even the moment when the threat was televized the left's response was to trash everything around them, incite violent protests and make memes of scientists who did identify the threat, but you're getting offended on a medium that parodies american political disputes. Are you a socialite or something? The only people that can weaponize this are extremists and the people INSIDE YOUR HEAD. You are an exact carbon copy of how people were portrayed in this movie, of how politically pathological some americans are. This tunnel-visioned menagerie of yours is so painfully ironic and I'm not even just blaming the right.The threat might not be real (because obviously it's a movie) but you cannot deny that this behavior is prevelant and it exists.
"Don't Look Up" is an okay movie which should have been great. The premise was good but the director intentionally made the movie "too dumb" or as Dan says too on the nose". I don't feel it hits too close to home. I started to check out several times but it was intelligent and relevant enough to keep me hanging on till the end. I feel like the director should have toned down some of the exaggerated characters like the Chief of Staff and the astronaut dude. But then I guess toning it down wouldn't have been true to the directors vision.
Satire is dead. Real life has been so ridiculous lately that this was more of a documentary.
