I think one of the reasons why the visuals look so amazing as they are depsite having an $80 million budget is because Gareth Edwards studied visual effects for his degree at the university I went to (he came in for a guest Q&A at my film course), which makes sense 'cause if you look at his films - Monsters (2010), Godzilla (2014) and Rogue One (2016) - he understands how those scenes are supposed to be shot, he understands scale, he understands how lighting works, and so on an so forth, which also makes it easier for the artists at ILM to do their jobs effectively as a result of him thinking of the VFX in mind throughout production.
Although he doesn't have small budgets(quite the opposite actually) it's the samw case with Cameron. He was a Visual Effects artist before becoming a director. And so his direction always includes space for visual effects artists to work properly. Directors who have a knowledge of how visual effects work usually tend to have great looking movies. (In terms of Visual effects).
He is similar to Robert Rodriguez and James Cameron. He is familiar with all the jobs involved with making a movie. He is a jack of all trades. That knowledge makes you work smarter and more deliberate.
He’s one of the most visually amazing directors out there, and I don’t like cgi all that much. What he did with rogue one, i mean he made the fight outside of the space Hawaii planet look absolutely beautiful. The gold hue on yavin was a nice touch as well. Would love to see his cut of the film though.
He also apparently didn’t start the vfx work until he had finalized a cut he was happy with, so the only VFX shots they had to do were the ones that were already preselected to be in the film itself.
I was just mentioning this so someone. I don't think I've seen Dan this excited for a movie since maybe EEAAO, which ended up being one of my favorite movies of all time. I don't see how this could measure up to that, but certainly if the excitement level is similar, then I'm sure to enjoy it!
It's a shame it's not being as well received by others as Dan. He was wondering why they didn't drop the review embargo earlier and if you look at it's rotten tomatoes rating you can see why.
Just got back in from seeing it. Probably one of the most stunning movies and you really can't appreciate the visual story telling from a small screen. The little girl who plays Alphie steals the movie. This is the first thing she's ever done. Holy crap! Those reviews who are making comparisons and not liking it I honestly don't know what to say. If you go in with zero expectations except for good story telling you will not be disappointed. A must see on the largest screen. It's a stunning movie and very good science fiction. I want to see it again.
What you said about original movies at the end is so true. People who always complain that “no original movies are made anymore” never actually bother to see any wholly original movies when they come out
Something I see about that is when I tell my parents there's a big new show or movie, they say it looks bad and then complain they don't have anything to watch or just watch the same movie again. I couldn't live with that mindset.

I absolutely loved this movie. Yes it was visually stunning but I found myself extremely emotionally affected when I was leaving the theater. More than any other movie I've seen this year. The ending got me good.
I loved your words. I'm so anxious to see this film myself. Unfortunately, I won't be able to see it until next week but I'll still be excited all the same.
As Edwards has said being apart of the VFX industry for nearly a decade helped him not only shoot this knowing how the effects would be used and how it will come out in the end.
the movie was all that, but it had some issues in terms of the story. Thers the lack of remote control, the donate your likeness thing and just a bunch of things that just dont make sense like how the guy just found a hazard suite and how the home was iradiated? How the base wasnt defended, how the robots didnt have remote control over things? Just little things that distract from the story, like why make a scifi granade if its hackable but not make it easily deactivated?
I had the day off on Monday, and went to see The Creator. There were only 3 other people in the theater. Reddit was ripping the movie apart, but I thought it was really good. The visuals and FX were so much better and well thought out than almost anything I've watched this year. Great review Dan, as always.
I saw it on Monday at the press premiere in Bangkok and I loved it. And everyone who was there loved it. It is an amazing movie and I love how it very cleverly took unexpected turns. You mentioned how Lucas repackaged The Hero's Journey, in this film Edwards has recpackaged The Journey And Return motif. Also, a mention to the supporting cast, the minor characters who popped up throughout the film, some of whom I know very well, they all seemed real and invested in the story, and that made the world seem real, along with the stunning locations the crew chose to shoot in. This is epic filmmaking done right.
I saw the film the day it was released. I heard from other reviews that it's not really groundbreaking. I have to agree with that. Maybe having seen a lot of sci fi and anime dealing with AI, I am some what looking for something deeper. I think it was a good entertaining movie that looks great but I feel that's it. Some good emotional moments with the characters. While watching it, I was looking at all the scenerty and set design and got the feeling that Artstation made a movie. Then I got the feeling of The Golden Child with the kinda bond they form... It's good but, I'm just not as gung ho with it as Dan is.
Dear Dan!; could you consider creating a tribute to the late and amazing Kevin Conroy? He passed away last November, and was the sole reason I got into acting. I have a voice acting background and there are some preconceived notions that it's not as demanding as regular acting; but the vocal training itself and perfecting the craft may take more time than any acting school. l feel like he's a bit underrated as Batman (ditto Mark Hamill as Joker) and even non existent in the conversation. PS. You almost saw me as Leon in those new Resident Evil games :)
Saw it twice in 2 days. Nicely done alternate reality. Very original as a package, nice effects and acting. I am sure some good bits ended up on the cutting room floor but I'd watch a future extended edition without hesitation. Nice piece of entertainment.
I went and saw this today with my parents, and whole-heartedly say GO SEE IT! When it comes out on DVD/Blu-Ray, BUY IT! It absolutely deserves a prime spot in anyone's film collection! I won't be able to go to the cinema again to watch it, but I will definitely be getting the blu-ray the moment I can do so. After the movie while we had lunch, my parents and I spent so much time talking about the film. There's amazing depth to the themes and dilemas throughout the film, so many flips on perspective, as the journey traverses the moral and ethical questions of what it means to be truly considered "alive". Oh and PS, if you're like me where emotional moments can't help but make you tear-up, bring tissues.
@@haizee2330awful is a little heavy handed yes theirs plot holes yes the story needed tweaking but it was in no way awful and we don’t need another umpthteeenth reekquel we need more attempts at original content
I re-post here my personal review I've posted in another video, yesterday after watching the movie: Just came from watching the release as the the initial trailers were promising, the visual effects, the landscapes/locations, the acting, the fictional world scenario, everything is amazing, superb (worth to mention that some scenes reminded me somehow some ones of the anime movie Akira), BUT the entire plot is nonsense, some of the military action is nonsense, there are situations that simply make no sense, also the design of the simulants, is really weird.
Very much anticipating this one. Unfortunately so many original concept films fail to meet unreasonable expectations because we've artificially distilled every movie down to an event film. Now the market is either small budget movies that only have to do ok in the opening weekend or enormous event pieces where you have to capture the full spectrum of movie goers at once to be considered to not lose money. Imagine if Alien had released in this time, I wonder if it wouldn't have just been pushed onto streaming and only talked about as a cult movie that would have disappeared into obscurity on streaming somewhere. I'm really hoping the Creator does get some attention. I hope it's good, but I hope the risk is rewarded even if it's only just ok.
I couldn't agree more. Saw it yesterday in imax with like 10 people in the theater. It was the 11:15am one though. My only complaint is that it wasn't two and a half hours longer. Loved it and will definitely go back before out of theaters.
Visually and tonally the film is brilliant. Where it struggles for me is narratively. That might come down to me struggling with how I’m supposed to feel about AI whether or not they can ever be considered alive. Which I think is what the major theme of the movie is trying to cover.
Is not artificial inteligente, Is artificial stupidity. Dogs were smarter than robots. They were so dumb they forgot to install a GPS in the girl. Through all the movie, nothing made Sense.
I actually yelled out WHAT when Dan said this is an 80 million dollar movie, from all the trailers I’ve seen I could’ve sworn this was a 200million dollar movie, that blows my mind
I love the originality. I love the amazing effects for such a budget. But the story just didn't land for me. And though it is "original", it did feel like a retread of a lot of other things. It's a kind of litmus test for what a person wants in a SF movie, and I'm glad that so many people will like it a lot. But I unfortunately wasn't among them.
And now this is on my must-watch list. I had been leaning towards seeing it, but there’s no better way to make a final decision than listening to Dan’s advice.
I'm so happy to hear the positive review of the "The Creator". I love sci-fi and I was hoping that an original, good sci-fi movie would come out to show that it's worth the investment to produce unique and exciting science fiction movies.
That was the best movie experience I’ve had in years. Hope it does well, but regardless, I loved it. There were so many movie influences in it, and yet had its own unique spin on a familiar theme.
You have so rightfully made the point about people who say that Hollywood is unoriginal and yet do not support originality. They are just critical about everything like the food critic Anton Ego from the movie Ratatouille.
I love the world building in the movie & acting by the characters. Gareth Edward is a master in world building and showing a sense of scale. The grungy, weathered world is akin to a Neil Blomkamp movie. I just wish the robots & simulant are more powerful & accurate than just a normal human, they are machines btw.
I was lucky to see a test screening of this film several months ago. Had no idea what I was in for but I really enjoyed it. The world was gorgeous to look at with a blade runner mixed with star wars aesthetic. And I loved how they portrayed the AI. CGI was on point. I had assumed this was a huge money sink and cannot believe it was done on such a tight budget. The story is slightly derivative but they put enough of a spin on it that I still enjoyed it. Definitely need to go see it again in its finished state. Hope it'll do well in theaters.
Thank you Dan for your take on a movie like this. I haven’t seen it, but I am now definitely going to check it out. And I love movies that are almost wholly new - not sequels etc.
I make short videos of art book previews from films and games and this is the first book in a very long time that I’ve been excited to get hold of. I saw the film last night and really want to watch it again. It’ll probably become a filmmakers film and will, I think, be inspirational to many coming up in the film industry. It was filmed on a Sony FX 3 which is virtually disposable from a Hollywood production point of view. Gareth Edwards has clearly prioritised on what will be remembered about this movie. He did the same with Monsters his first big feature which was edited, colour graded and FX inserts all with Adobes Production Premium Suite. That cost around £1000 at the time. I hope he gets where he wants to be.
The moment the trailer dropped for this movie, I was so excited. But hearing your review gives me all the sparkly feelings that movie magic should! Can't wait to see it on Thursday!
Just saw this & walked out of the theatre, never since watching T2 Judgement day have I Been this SCI-Fi happy. This will be a epic true cult classic in no time, Hans Zimmer on the score & Greig Fraser’s Cinematography with Gareth’s directing really crafted a unforgettable & timely masterpiece.
This is awesome to hear that you loved it - I hadn’t even heard of this film until I saw a few critics like you reviewed it, and the Cinematography you have shown immediately interests me. And then your fervent endorsement of the execution of the story puts me over the top I can’t go to the film in theaters, I just can’t (quarantining because I care for ill family members and infant child) but I will definitely watch this on PPV as soon as it is available so I can do my part to support original SciFi
I just rented/watched recently. It took me so long because I wasn’t trusting the reviews but rather my gut intuition to simply rent. I wanted to like/love this film, but my intuition served me and my film budget well. I’m not happy it did, as I wanted to be enthusiastic as the reviewers I watched. In a nutshell I found it flat and riddled with flaws. HOWEVER, Madeleine Yuna Voyles??? Phenomenal!!! She and her alone is what kept me intrigued. Oh, oops…. I do agree…. great cinematography and use of those budget $$$.
I’m in this movie group on Facebook and I get so infuriated by exactly what you explained about original content. I have actively advocated this movie and some say it’s boring, but will cry about no originality in film smh. Loved your review and I really loved this movie. I hope people go see it.
I just went to this movie with some good friends and I have to say, this is the best original syfy movie I've seen in years! and despite it being a Sunday night showing, my theater was packed so I hope that's a good sign the movie gets the recognition it deserves
Thanks so much for the review, Dan. We make a point to buy tickets to movies that we might not even personally enjoy, but want to support on principle (original stories, mid-budget movies, stories from interesting backgrounds). But man, you're hitting every beat of what we DO love about movies with praise for The Creator, and I'm getting more excited with every second of this review. We made sure to see Arrival and Annihilation in theaters, I think we were due for another good sci-fi film
I was meh on the film. Visually stunning, but the plot was all over the place and took forever to get in and soon as it was getting good, it ends quickly. But i am and will always be happy to support amazing filmakers and their craft.
I'm absolutley going to see this in theaters. Was already planning too because of the director, but hearing all these super positive reviews for it everywhere just makes me more excited
I've heard next to nothing about this until now. Your energetic review jumps off the screen, and now I'm excited about this. Will surely watch it when it comes out.
7 YEARS AFTER ROGUE ONE!!!!! seriously, the damage Rogue One ended up doing to his career, the rumors about Tony Gilroy replacing him, after Edwards has been doing movies every two years, Monsters, Godzilla and Rogue One... 7 YEARS!!!!! (started working in the movie 4 years after Rogue One)
Thought Dan had more of a critical eye, so this review is surprising. Looking past the pretty visuals - overly predictable plot, some bad dialogue, poor character/relationship development. Guy shouts "YOURE BLOWING MY COVER" with his wife in the other room? Jesus.
I saw it today here in the UK. It seems to have a bit of a limited release, only a couple of evening performances each day, not sure why but it's a shame. I like Godzilla and Rogue One, love sci-fi, so was looking forward to this. It took me a while to get into it, something felt off, I wasn't warming to the main character or Washington's performance. Set up was a bit rushed in the opening credits. Intrusive songs a couple of times. Why the child went along at the beginning, and why people were helping them weren't clear. AIs seemed a bit inept and easily overcome/outwitted. US being able to bomb parts of Asia with no military retaliation also was also unclear. All that said I got into the film in the second half, mainly due to the child character and actress performance. Overall I liked it, reminded me more of Elysium than Star Wars, although the tone of the ending was very Rogue One.
Super glad you liked the film, I've been really excited for this movie for a while, an original sci-fi epic by the director of Rogue One and inspired by Blade Runner/Apocalypse Now, with a great cast and beautiful visuals, I was really anxious that it'd end up a dud. I'm not expecting perfection, and I know this movie will likely underperform, I just am hoping for something. Already bought IMAX tickets a week ago for the day after opening in my city.
Dan, this is one where i would love to have an old school Siskel and Ebert discussion. I think this film missed on so many levels and i was really disappointed, because it had so much potential. I wanted so much to like this movie and it actually frustrated me with the parts that really didn't work
well, a big part of a budget goes to the salary of the movie stars, which Creator doesn't have, and marketing, which Creator has been lacking. We'll see how it does without these two big factors.
I cannot wait to see this film. The first trailer hooked me and I have ignored most of the marketing since. I love John David Washington, his Dad Denzel is my favourite actor and John David is living up to that legacy. 🤞🏽it is the secret film being shown today in the uk 😁
Nice to hear your very positive review, Dan. When I saw the 1st trailer I had doubts as story aspects (that were shown) looked like that of other movies. But for reasons unknown, the feeling that this might be different, even that it might be a higher quality of those 'old' story beats, grew on me more and more, and so even before your review it has my interest in seeing it this weekend. Your review has added to my enthusiasm. And in advance have a great wedding.
I was already hyped for that movie based on the trailer alone (I too am a sucker for sci-fi movies), but your review just amped up the hype! Can't wait to see that movie.
I have not disliked a movie as much as I disliked the creator in a very long time. The visuals were great though. It’s a well made movie overall but that script and editing are really really rough. Just couldn’t get over unnecessary pitfalls it created for itself. Just left really angry at it, especially cuz of its potential
Dan, thank you so very much from a very clean cut no frills review. If the movie is as refreshing to see as was your delivery, then I think I will enjoy it very much. A+
I was so disappointed in this movie. It looked stunning, but it had so many plot holes (e.g. heaven) and too many serendipitous moments. And although I liked the actors and connect usually very easy emotionally, I was left cold by it. Probably because I got continuously more and more annoyed by the meaningless actions the protagonists took. Spoilerwarning: Why did the child need to be on the nomad at all? Shutting it down for a few seconds made no difference to the story. Why does the US military use robots, like the sprinting bomb thingy, if they banned ai? How could the Nomad suddenly strike far distance targets, when it semmed to only strike in the visible distance the whole time before? Those and many more questions drove me insane, while watching.
@@UnstableYT-u7k Oh that was a prosthetic from the beginning on. But I was confused as well. There was a tiny flashback from when he met his wife, in which she was repairing his arm.

Sold! Hadn’t heard of this until I saw JeremyJ’s review and it grabbed my attention. And now after seeing yours too I’m definitely gonna check this out. You are the only two reviewers I really pay attention to.
It’s nice to see an original sci-fi film pop out of Hollywood once in a while. Everyone was good in it and the visuals were better than anything Disney proper or WB put out maybe ever. Story was okay and I’m glad the team could bring out their vision. Enjoyed it overall.
I did not watch a single trailer of this movie and when I saw it at IMAX I was blown away how good it is. The story is good, the acting is good, and the cinematography and VFX just wow. This shows how Rotten Tomatoes is useless as a metric. JUST WATCH THIS MOVIE.
I wish there was more belief in this from the get go. Gareth Edwards is so good at world building and this might have been his best work yet. There is so much in this film you could dive deeper on and we only scratched the surface. I know he isnt personally a fan of making sequels but to me the entire film felt like it could have unfolded over a trilogy. The original AI human conflict and Joshuas undercover work, The creation and discovery of the child running from the humans, The child discovering inner power to bring peace. All three could have been marvelous movies in their own right.
20 seconds in and I no longer feel like a cinephile failure for honestly not knowing that Gareth Edwards and Gareth Evans different people. I used to think that guy that did The Raid and Rogue One certainly has range as a director lol

Good or not, it's honestly refreshing to see a filmmaker take on an original project, instead of remaking or rebooting some worn out IP! ❤
It was awful.
@@haizee2330 it was one of the best sci Fi movies of all time.
@@haizee2330awful is a little heavy handed yes theirs plot holes yes the story needed tweaking but it was in no way awful and we don’t need another umpthteeenth reekquel we need more attempts at original content
@@ethanweimer-kopf6907 pahahaha ok
Just saw it today, and omg, it's such an amazing movie. Has action, story, and heart.
I re-post here my personal review I've posted in another video, yesterday after watching the movie:
Just came from watching the release as the the initial trailers were promising, the visual effects, the landscapes/locations, the acting, the fictional world scenario, everything is amazing, superb (worth to mention that some scenes reminded me somehow some ones of the anime movie Akira), BUT the entire plot is nonsense, some of the military action is nonsense, there are situations that simply make no sense, also the design of the simulants, is really weird.
It's not your fault, it's the film's. It gives no reason why AI is better, or why the US used the nuke explosion as an excuse to eradicate AI.
Well because most of the scenes are shot in real life locations which is cheaper than fully pure green screen studios most of the movie's production.
Gareth Edwards is a name we all need to be paying attention to people👏
🤔On the back end of Rogue One, and Gareth Edwards, looking forward to giving this a shot...
And now this is on my must-watch list. I had been leaning towards seeing it, but there’s no better way to make a final decision than listening to Dan’s advice.
The more I hear about this picture the more excited I am getting. from not knowing of its existence last weekend to being as hyped as I am for Dune 2.
I'm so happy to hear the positive review of the "The Creator". I love sci-fi and I was hoping that an original, good sci-fi movie would come out to show that it's worth the investment to produce unique and exciting science fiction movies.
I hope this movie beats the odds and is able to become a breakout hit. I look forward to seeing it, especially with your enthusiastic recommendation.
So excited to see an original high budget sci-fi film !!!
The Creator is mid budget
true. But almost $100M is still a lot of money
Great movie, but it's actually not high budget, which was surprising since it looks so good.
Thank you as always Dan. You make my job a lot easier here at the theater for scheduling based on your reviews and news.
Edwards has an understanding of real movie magic. I have high hopes for this one! Thanks fro the non-spoiler review.
I'm so stoked for this. I've long wanted Edwards to take on a project like this.
I just saw a trailer at the theater of this movie. I'm in all in, I'm going to see this one. It looks SO interesting.
High praise! Been looking for some great, original sci-fi for a bit now and glad to hear this.
This is awesome to hear that you loved it - I hadn’t even heard of this film until I saw a few critics like you reviewed it, and the Cinematography you have shown immediately interests me. And then your fervent endorsement of the execution of the story puts me over the top
I can’t go to the film in theaters, I just can’t (quarantining because I care for ill family members and infant child) but I will definitely watch this on PPV as soon as it is available so I can do my part to support original SciFi
I can’t WAIT to see this! This is an amazing review! Thank you and I love your channel! 🎉🎉🎉
I'm not the biggest scifi fan, but I'll be sure to head straight to the theater when this comes out now!
I just went to this movie with some good friends and I have to say, this is the best original syfy movie I've seen in years! and despite it being a Sunday night showing, my theater was packed so I hope that's a good sign the movie gets the recognition it deserves
This was a fantastic movie, a reallly good sci-fi and a love letter to the japanese mangakas Shirow Masamune, Katsuhiro Otomo and Kia Asamiya.
No recognizable IP? Not a sequel? Sci-fi? Get your pants ready. Expecting this one to bomb hard.
Just got back from seeing it and Gareth was there doing a Q+A super cool guy and a WONDERFUL film
I’m disappointed in myself for not watching The Creator sooner. It was incredible and I’m so glad it got Oscar nominations!
I was meh on the film. Visually stunning, but the plot was all over the place and took forever to get in and soon as it was getting good, it ends quickly. But i am and will always be happy to support amazing filmakers and their craft.
Got my ticket for Saturday. Can’t wait to see this one. It’s getting great reviews.
I'm absolutley going to see this in theaters. Was already planning too because of the director, but hearing all these super positive reviews for it everywhere just makes me more excited
Denzel son is the new guy!!! great movie great effects great cast strong story worth a ticket
Watching it tonight on Hulu. I'm excited!
I've heard next to nothing about this until now. Your energetic review jumps off the screen, and now I'm excited about this. Will surely watch it when it comes out.
The way Dan articulates his positive reviews is pure enthusiasm for the art of cinema!
Taking 10 coworkers to it Thursday night, hopefully we can spread the word as this review really has me excited to see it!
I was already excited after watching the trailer but now I am really really hyped. Can't wait to see it. I love myself some proper Sci-Fi.
I’m super excited for this movie! My only critique is them using the “Aviator” font is super distracting haha
Does it beat Avatar's Papyrus font?
Got back from it. Watched it in IMAX, loved it. Tell everyone I know to go and watch it. Can't wait to see it again.
I've been waiting for an original Gareth Edwards movie since "Monsters" and I'm so excited that this one is getting so much praise!!!
Monsters is great!
Ok... you're giving this way too much positive praise.
Thank you for this, Dan. Because of your review I went to see the movie in a theather, and it was an incredible experience!
Gareth Edwards put out the only watchable Disney Star Wars movie, glad he’s still doing sci fi
Dan, this is one where i would love to have an old school Siskel and Ebert discussion.
I think this film missed on so many levels and i was really disappointed, because it had so much potential.
I wanted so much to like this movie and it actually frustrated me with the parts that really didn't work
This movie is very pretty but I struggle to think of anything in this flick that makes sense.
well, a big part of a budget goes to the salary of the movie stars, which Creator doesn't have, and marketing, which Creator has been lacking.
It was the Creator. Go and see this film people. It’s great
Thanks for the review Dan! Trailers made it look interesting but not 'I need to see this now' levels of good. I'm gonna give this a shot.
Spoilerwarning:
Why did the child need to be on the nomad at all? Shutting it down for a few seconds made no difference to the story. Why does the US military use robots, like the sprinting bomb thingy, if they banned ai? How could the Nomad suddenly strike far distance targets, when it semmed to only strike in the visible distance the whole time before? Those and many more questions drove me insane, while watching.
I agree there were plot holes like when the main character got his arm back without any explanation
@@UnstableYT-u7k Oh that was a prosthetic from the beginning on. But I was confused as well. There was a tiny flashback from when he met his wife, in which she was repairing his arm.
@@anniebaer3261 Thank you for your reply. Yeah i confused with that part because I noticed the prosthetic but it looked like his actual arm towards the end.
I am seeing it Thursday and Saturday night to support original scifi film.
An original movie? Sci-fi? ONE PART?!? Sign me up!!
Sold! Hadn’t heard of this until I saw JeremyJ’s review and it grabbed my attention. And now after seeing yours too I’m definitely gonna check this out. You are the only two reviewers I really pay attention to.
I am doing EVERYTHING I can to push this movie and get people to see it. This needs to make a profit.
Well, this is now top of my must see list! Love a good, original SciFi.
The plot of Terminator 2, flipped, in the setting of the Vietnam War scifi-ed a bit. With robots playing Keystone Kops.
First thing I thought was "Oh the guy from The Raid and Apostle is doing sci-fi? Cool". ¡? Oh not the same guy. Got it.
Alrighty, it seems my Dune 2 void will be filled😂 Super excited🎉🎉🎉!!!
