A work colleague was off last week, and he went to see Joker 2 on his birthday. He's the most placid, easygoing guy I know - but he told us he left the cinema angry; angry at how bad it was as a sequel, angry at the story, angry that it wasn't even marketed as a musical, which it clearly is in part. If Joker 2 can anger and disappoint a guy like That, it's no wonder its box office take has fallen off a cliff in just 2 weeks - the word is out that it's an insultingly bad cash-grab stinker.

Anecdotally, I'm surprised Saturday Night is that low. My friend and I saw it in two markets this weekend and both screenings were at least 90% full. Outside of Marvel movies, not sure the last time I can say that was the case. Goes to show that it must not have had the same success in other markets.
It's so weird seeing people framing Terrifier and Joker as indie vs Hollywood. The only thing Hollywood about Joker is the budget, it's an indie in every other way. It's a court room drama/musical about a comic book character with Lady Gaga that is super depressing. There is nothing Hollywood about that. And as I understand it, Phillips and Phoenix had total creative control. I do not think it's a result of the Hollywood assembly line. And the fact that Joker failed is exactly why movies like Terrifier don't get funding from Hollywood. Sinking a lot of money into a production that is a weird, creative, and personal vision from a filmmaker is a huge gamble that it will flop. And if Hollywood did up the budget, then Terrifier would be in the exact same position the Joker is in. I am super happy for Terrifier, but I think it's lightning in a bottle. It's not a template that can predictably be copied.
33:40 I have to correct you on the Box Office Flashback, it’s actually the first Hotel Transylvania that came out in 2012. The sequel came out three years later. The grosses on the frame are the same, it’s just you had the sequel instead of the original.
The Joker 2 will be used as an example as to why studios won’t give full control to directors. They gave Todd everything he wanted and he destroyed a Billion Dollar franchise *corrected spelling*
I did wonder if Todd Philips just didnt want to make Joker 2, and made it to flop. However when you read that it could loose $200,000,000 I cant help but think he would not set out to piss off Warner Brothers THAT much. It wont just be WB who thinks twice about giving him a decent budget.
The Art of Dying Brings me to life Death by design tongue-tied and you're terri-FIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *GO!*
I spent my movie money on Saturday Night, and this movie was directly targeted at me as I am a lifelong SNL fan who has been watching since the seventies. I can tell you that for someone like me, the film was very moving, especially the crescendo-like ending; however, for non-SNL fans, I just have hard time believing that they would get much out of it.
Next year Dan, you should do a top 10 box office. Would be fun to see how much of a guess it would be. To be fair, if I movie is delayed to a future year, have a few back up picks to put on the list.
I'm really confused about Joker 2. I don't know if I should champion daring films, subverting expectations or to rubbish films for not appealing to an audience. It is art.... but it is a business...
Yeah, such films really challenge the simple narratives around box office. If it was a hit people would say: "See, the audience rewards something daring!" People have trouble admitting to themselfes that nobody really knows what will sell at the box office. Yet the reaction is always: "Well, obviously..."
Yes, the "fans know what's good/sells" narrative is just burnt out for me. Given the reaction for both Joker and Furiosa, it could just be that the real target audiences for those films don't go to the theater as quickly anymore, so they just wait for streaming and it becomes a self-fulling prophecy in terms of box office - just as the alternative versions of those sequels that would have been "successful" would have had little or no appeal to those streaming audiences because they would have been so safe and mediocre. In the larger sense, I don't know why I should care about the overall health of an industry that just serves mental pablum because it's safe and profitable when it's nothing that I want to see anyway and, over time, theaters have become expensive zoos that even the staff can't control - and the industry didn't make it that way... the "fans" did. The point that the numbers prove whatever someone wants them to prove is well taken; for me, they've always shown that there's no correlation between box office and film quality.
“Joker has the biggest heist at WB…. “😂😂😂 “WB wanted to sell the company again to have another write off… “ “Terrifier 3 being number 1 in any week was not in any of my Bingo cards”. 😅😊
My take on the Joker 2 flop is the result of mass miscommunication and gross misunderstanding on the studio and audience end. The original Joker by Todd Philips was never pitched as a superhero genre film, it was a somber ‘art house’ reimagining of the Joker character. The film overperformed with critics, at the box office and during the awards season, signaling to the studios that a more highbrow, genre subverting superhero flick could sell well. Naturally this led to the greenlighting of the sequel film, if you look at the films themselves it is a natural progression of the original film narratively and even thematically. It makes sense for them to make this movie not out of spite, in the studio or Todd Philips’ end, but because they saw the success of the first film. Now the misunderstanding comes in that they didn’t realize that what the majority of the audience enjoyed about the original wasn’t that it was a highbrow art film but because of the still remaining conventional superhero fair, and the fact that it was done with realism, grit and hyper violence. The majority of the audience mistook Todd’s intentions and major takeaways of the original film, resulting in a wildly differing of expectations. I don’t buy the takes that Todd was intentionally trying to piss off its core fan base, not that Warner wanted to take this risk. Simply that Joker was seen as a highbrow genre subversion on the creators side, and a hyper stylized superhero flick on the fandom’s side. Leading to the failure of this sequel critically and monetarily.
"Hysteria!" is also premiering on Peacock at the end of this week, which wasn't mentioned in the segment for "Opening This Week." I'm hoping it's good.
I don’t know about Warner Bros. not taking risks, cause looking at their slate next year, they’re going to be getting like 4 Jokers. It’s like Apple last year but they don’t have the money
I believe The Fall Guy is based on a television show from the 70s or 80s. This is with regard to the "Non-sequel/remake gross" graphic. I don't think the show is the most well-known thing, but it might matter to you, so I figured I'd mention it.
Yes, I'm aware of The Fall Guy's TV origins. In the movie realm, it's not a remake of or a sequel to an existing film, which is what I used as the criterion.
@@DanMurrellMovies Okay, that makes sense. I know you take this stuff pretty seriously with the corrections and stuff so I wanted to throw it out there in case you hadn't known. I'd definitely never heard of it prior to the film lol
Dan I think you forgot to add the membership link in the description? I am on my phone and I think TH-cam doesn’t have the join button on mobile devices for some reason..😅
In the near future when someone fails spectacularly they'll be referred to as "doing a Joker." "I just took my admission test to go to law school." "Cool. How did it go?" "I did a Joker." "That bad, huh!" 🤭
I'm not sure I'd describe Joker 2 as a risk, at least not without hindsight. It's a sequel to a billion dollar movie, starring one of the most acclaimed actors of his generation and one of the most famous singers of her generation, directed by the person who helmed said billion dollar prequel. That makes it look more like a sure thing, and - I assume - the reason the high budget was approved.
It was risky since they announced it will be a musical with Lady Gaga my first thought was, God is going to be a flop but I wanted to be wrong because I love the first movie so much
I hate to say this but here is a tale of an average filmgoer. Five years ago it was 2019. I was very freshly married and I had a kid on the way. My wife and I loved going to the theater to see all the tentpole blockbusters and Joker was a big movie for us! I remember during the scene where he dances down the stairs, I could feel my son kicking because he felt the vibration of the sound system. Anyways fast forward to today, it’s 2024 and movie theater prices are really high. We also have to secure a baby sitter for our now five year old as well. So if my wife and I want to have a traditional night out we would get dinner and a movie right? Well, dinner for two of us nowadays is like $30 (this is if we try to save and just split a meal and get an appetizer) So then we get to the theater and if it isn’t a matinee we are looking at a huge investment for a single film- one that in a couple of months we could just stream. So then we spend at least $10 each adding up to (at least) $20 minimum for a film So the reduced price for a dinner we split ($30) and the one movie we see ($20) adds up to $50 and I’m telling you that’s the bare minimum. These days, we only go to movies that we see as “investments” where we know it’ll be worth the price tag. Movies are no longer a fun little extra thing we do- now they are either the cost of a grocery trip or they are a waste of time.
Even though it was an small release, an horror experimental animation film “The Wolf House” (2018,Chile) had the similar type of success here in Japan last summer with an minimal promotion but an PACKED theaters everywhere. Horror fans all over the world know what they want and would show up.

"It's not about money, it's about sending a message" and the message is, this sequel sucks! 😂
Watching the “The Great Outdoors” here on TH-cam, I miss John Candy & good movies
the fall guy is a reboot from an old tv show, isn't it?
It’s more of remake
WB could release Coyote vs. Acme and recoup most of the loss from Joker 2.
No, they should make a re release of the first Joker again with new scenes
Thank you Dan
Anecdotally, I'm surprised Saturday Night is that low. My friend and I saw it in two markets this weekend and both screenings were at least 90% full. Outside of Marvel movies, not sure the last time I can say that was the case. Goes to show that it must not have had the same success in other markets.
32:56 I think you mean Hotel Transylvania 1. Hotel Transylvania 2 came out in 2015.
That's history right there... ya understand?
Hush is available on the streaming sight Shudder for those who are interested
The Joker 2 will be used as an example as to why studios won’t give full control to directors.
They gave Todd everything he wanted and he destroyed a Billion Dollar franchise
*corrected spelling*
I did wonder if Todd Philips just didnt want to make Joker 2, and made it to flop. However when you read that it could loose $200,000,000 I cant help but think he would not set out to piss off Warner Brothers THAT much. It wont just be WB who thinks twice about giving him a decent budget.
Go go go!
Terrifier 3 for the _Win!_
11:31 would be nice to have the release years on all the films here, rather than just one of them
The Art of Dying
Brings me to life
Death by design
tongue-tied and you're terri-FIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
*GO!*
A man of culture i see ❤
Don't you dare say Art is dead, Miles County's painted red
Joker 2 deserved to having these numbers , on my opinion . thank you for bring us all these information , Dan
I’m such a nerd for these stats, so I appreciate the care and detail you put into the video, Dan. Thank you!
Terrifier 3 Ftw. So great seeing them evolve and grow success from the first terrifier.
Saw Look Back and Saturday Night this weekend. Both very good to excellent.
Neat 🔥 Look Back is just outside my top 10 of the year. I’ll be seeing Saturday Night this weekend
You're incredible, Dan! 👏🔥🖤🔥👏
“Joker has the biggest heist at WB…. “😂😂😂
“WB wanted to sell the company again to have another write off… “
“Terrifier 3 being number 1 in any week was not in any of my Bingo cards”.
Wait so what was the last unrated movie to open at number 1???
Thanks Dan.
Im sure someone has already suggested this but maybe you can do seasonal predictions like you do for the summer.
No inflation adjustment for the box office history segment? That little magical sound is my favorite part of the show.
Whoops! It's there now!
I'm sorry Dan but this week you're saying "deux" more like "dieu(x)" which means "god(s)"😂
Though "Madness of god(s)" is a pretty good title
In the near future when someone fails spectacularly they'll be referred to as "doing a Joker."
"I just took my admission test to go to law school."
"Cool. How did it go?"
"I did a Joker."
"That bad, huh!"
🤭
I'm not sure I'd describe Joker 2 as a risk, at least not without hindsight. It's a sequel to a billion dollar movie, starring one of the most acclaimed actors of his generation and one of the most famous singers of her generation, directed by the person who helmed said billion dollar prequel. That makes it look more like a sure thing, and - I assume - the reason the high budget was approved.
It was risky since they announced it will be a musical with Lady Gaga my first thought was, God is going to be a flop but I wanted to be wrong because I love the first movie so much
You know it's best friend territory when you get called for a last minute babysitting duties to cover an appointment that was made months ago. 😂
It was a dental emergency.
Well, dinner for two of us nowadays is like $30 (this is if we try to save and just split a meal and get an appetizer)
So then we get to the theater and if it isn’t a matinee we are looking at a huge investment for a single film- one that in a couple of months we could just stream. So then we spend at least $10 each adding up to (at least) $20 minimum for a film
So the reduced price for a dinner we split ($30) and the one movie we see ($20) adds up to $50 and I’m telling you that’s the bare minimum.
These days, we only go to movies that we see as “investments” where we know it’ll be worth the price tag. Movies are no longer a fun little extra thing we do- now they are either the cost of a grocery trip or they are a waste of time.
Really informative, thanks Dan
Even though it was an small release, an horror experimental animation film “The Wolf House” (2018,Chile) had the similar type of success here in Japan last summer with an minimal promotion but an PACKED theaters everywhere. Horror fans all over the world know what they want and would show up.
I didn't know that The Marvels had already dethroned Shaq.
