Been coming in and out of seeing his reviews for years now and he's been very helpful in finding new things, but at the same time, I VERY much agree with this. The odd inconsistency on reviews sometime when one gets a lot of good word and another that was just okay and they get the same score confuses me. And I also don't agree much with going through so much if he wasn't intending to finish much of them. He has such a weird relationship with numerical scores. When "5" is used for movies he likes and deems good, where can you go from there? But maybe he draws satisfaction from being withholding, or decides his scores with the far superior movies of the far future in mind, compared to which even the good products of our time are merely mediocre. Hell, if a film he thought was *really* great gets a mere 7, I wonder what unimaginable wonders 8, 9 and 10 would provide.

Like when Mirabel has finally let out her anger and talked shit to Abuelita, I was like "oh yes, this is fucking it" and then suddenly she just walked out after the destruction of the house and then Abuelita came after her and asked for forgiveness and shit. Like Im not mad that Abuelita shared her story but damn, I would have liked some more scenes of Mirabel out in the woods just letting out her frustration or letting her realize the other shit she's been through cause oh boi there's alot. But no, they just let Abuelita have the spotlight after Mirabel did a tantrum. Granted, this is coming from someone who relates so much to the family toxicity and generational trauma and stuff so maybe Im asking too much to a children's movie but I would have liked it if they didnt resolve everything so quickly.

      Yea the movie felt like it was an hour long flat. Even though it was pretty surface level and did nothing to absolve the family for what they did to Bruno, I can respect a short and sweet movie. Even stuff like Inside Out and WALL-E felt like they overstayed their welcome by the third act and I typically love long movies.
      It's probably extremely hard to write a good kids movie that has enough fat on it to entertain adults and not be too long for kids at the same time.

    It is a shame the Oscars are so beholden to Disney/Pixar for their benchmark of what animation can be. It can be so diverse with 2D, rotoscoped, stop-motion etc. that the plasticity of Dixar's 3D should really have more genuine competition.

      I'm honestly getting exhausted with especially Pixar at the Oscars. Disney on their own at least hasn't won that often (only 3 times, all three a bit arguable, since there were better animated movies than Frozen in 2013, most people think HTTYD 2 should've beaten Big Hero 6, and Kubo was better than Zootopia), but Pixar has won 11 times out of 16, and definitely didn't deserve most of those. Probably unpopular, but I'd say they only deserved 4 or 5 of those (Incredibles, Ratatouille Wall-E and Soul, maybe Finding Nemo?). Coraline should've beaten up, How to Train Your Dragon should've beaten Toy Story 3, Brave is arguably the weakest nominees of 2012 (for sure worse than Wreck-It Ralph and Paranorman), Shaun the Sheep or Anamolisa should've beaten Inside Out, Loving Vincent should've beaten Coco, and either Klaus or How to Train your Dragon 3 should've beaten Toy Story 4. The fact that Laika or Cartoon Saloon have never won is a travesty and Dreamworks, Studio Ghibli, and Aardman having so little is a travesty too.

    I might be wrong, but I got the impression that some criticisms of your comments on the ornithopters (the flying vehicles in Dune) wasn't because they simply hated that you didn't like them, but because you thoroughly mocked the impracticality of the design, especially for an iconic sci-fi novel.
    The implausible sci-fi element is definitely that us building a working ornithopter that can lift a person is impossible, but the design and basic mechanics of it resembling and emulating the flight of a dragonfly is completely practical, given that they're the most versatile and efficient flying insects (if not flying animals period) on Earth.

    • @HappyLarry.

      Its not 'completely practical' when a dragonfly weighs very very little. Do you understand how large the wings would have to be and how light the ornithopter would have to be? Like seriously? I'm fully aware that it's physically impossible, and you being a demeaning ass about informing me of things I _already stated_ isn't making you come off as clever. I tried to make it as obvious as possible that my referring to the choice of basing the design and mechanics of the fictional vehicle as "practical" is in choosing to base it off a dragonfly instead of an airplane, etc. with the unrealistic element of it being actually achievable. Thank you so much for pointing out the terrible editing in Don't Look Up, I tried telling people about the weird editing choices like freeze frames (Which I believe happened 2 other times in the movie) and dialogue clearly being ripped from other takes/scenes. I didn't creat a video with a montage of these errors, so other film buffs I tried talking too about this just kinda acted like those errors didn't exist and that I don't agree with the political aspects regardless of me saying that's not the case. This movie especially was very bad and it's nice seeing someone else with that take :)

    16:58 what you said about Shakespeare is a good point, and I think it's something that is worth talking about. Shakespeare lived and died in the late 1500's and the early 1600's. Macbeth the play is over 400 years old and the English language has changed a lot since then. Kids are expected to read these plays in school, but they are almost never translated, which is honestly necessary.
    A simple example of why comes from Romeo and Juliet "oh Romeo Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo". The word "art" in this context can be easily interpreted as meaning "are", the word "thou" being a second person pronoun akin to modern English "you" is also understandable. Do you know what "wherefore" means? did you think it meant "where", like she was asking Romeo "where are you?"? It actually means "why", as in "why are you Romeo", like "why did I fall in love with you, why did it have to be you, someone I can't be with". This is just one line, but all of Shakespeare's plays and sonnets are full of these out dated words that modern speakers simply do not know.
    It is, for what it's worth, easy to learn if you want to. If you can speak modern English fluently, Shakespeare English is quick to pick up if you spend some time, particularly if you are familiar with the king James bible, which is from the same period of English history give or take. But people who seem to think/expect general English speakers to be able to just jump into something like Macbeth without a translation are delusional. This also has nothing to do with the quality of the writing; I'm sure there are good German and Dutch plays that modern English speakers wouldn't be able to understand, also.

    • @floraposteschild4184
      @floraposteschild4184 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Meaning can also be conveyed by clever directing, editing and acting choices. I think people get hung up on understanding EVERY SINGLE WORD (even Shakespeare profs debate about that). Enjoy it like a foreign movie, where you're getting the gist and flow.
      Speaking of understanding every single word, many editions have Shakespeare on the left page, and a modern language explanation on the right page, going line by line. Comes in handy.

    • @CirclesForever
      @CirclesForever 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@floraposteschild4184 there is nothing that communicates meaning quite like language. It would be easier to "enjoy...like a foreign movie" if, like a foreign movie would, it had subtitles that translated what was being said. It's not being dumb or closed minded if you can't understand this antiquated dialect, the same as if someone couldn't understand an English based creole like Jamaican Patois without prior exposure.

    • @floraposteschild4184
      @floraposteschild4184 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@CirclesForever But you know subtitles are just an approximation of what is being said, even the good ones. And of course, being a different culture, you're not getting so much of the context. Not to mention you're missing what's happening on screen while you're reading the titles.
      But if it's a good film overall and you're curious, you can re-watch, learn more and more, and get used to it. There's no problem having modern language subtitles on the Bluray or streaming (as long as I can turn them off), or modern language versions -- most of the Shakespeare Retold episodes are very good, for instance. But I object to the idea that modern audiences can't understand enough Shakespeare to get by. I've seen Ian McKellan's Richard III and Roman Polanski's Macbeth in the theatre, in front of audiences not over familiar with Shakespeare, and no one seemed confused or not enjoying it. It depends on how skillfully it's done.

      @@tylerjhunter I mean, did he not? He technically did watch each of them just not all of them fully. Did you even watch the video? He says each time when we didn't watch them fully lmao. You want to be right so bad you take one sentence but disregard the rest of the video. That's why you can't be taken seriously fr

    Kind of weird how you criticize some movies for being "crowd pleasers" but then criticize other movies for trying to do their own thing that you couldn't personally connect with.

      Won't defend most of these because I haven't seen most of these but turning off Raya before it finished was a good call because the last 20 minutes are so fucking bad it'd make him drop the score to a 2.

    Hey Adam. Fuck everyone telling you they're upset with how you choose to spend your time watching these movies. I love the films you bring to our attention (can't wait to watch All Lights Everywhere and Listening to Kenny G) and I hope you know the vast vast majority of us love and appreciate the time and effort you put into consuming so much media and creating these highly entertaining videos for us.

    So glad you enjoyed The worst person in the world. One of my favourite films in a long time. IMO, it really captures our time: We have more options than ever, in everything from merchandise to partners and education, but this freedom comes with the price of increased responsibility and doubt. Brilliant story, and the acting performances were stellar. Not a perfect film, but almost there, for me at least

    I'm not mad at you for not finishing movies, but I can't really get behind talking about and rating them without it (regardless of your being upfront about not finishing them). Your opinion isn't important enough that we should be grateful for scraps of bored impression. Just let go of the feeling that comprehensive coverage is important and focus on the films you care about. Your comparison of Oldboy original vs. Spike Lee was fantastic.

    Even worse so, the out-of-left field unprovoked winning of Best Actor by Will Smith moments later.

      Shyamalan made fun of film critics with that strawman character in Lady In The Water; that doesn't mean film critics were incorrect in saying that movie sucks. If someone's response is "you're who they're making fun of", just shrug and stand by your criticism.
