This was the closing film at a 4 day horror film festival I went to. The whole festival, we´re making friends, laughing, cheering. This ending comes along, ends the fest, and we all went our separate ways in complete silence.
On the other hand, if this movie had been shown first you might have been too depressed to enjoy the other 3! Definitely leaves you in a lurch.
Crazy. This is one of those movies you genuinely need others to see to be able to relate to you. Its kind of iconic.
I was expecting (and would have been completely fine with) a cheesy creature-feature.
I did not expect Frank Darabont to levitate three feet of the air, a sick pulsating luminiscense coming from the dark voids in his eyes, to go: "no..."

Something that I like about this movie: the little kid ACTS LIKE A LITTLE KID. He isn't smarter than the adults. He doesn't come up with a plan that saves the day. He isn't a hacker that hacks into the security system to override the door locks.

You still gotta give some love to "Park" it's a 90's popcorn flick. And at least the kid didn't do some wicked gymnastics moves to take out one of the monsters.
He was smarter than the adults, they couldn't keep from killing each other and coming up with plans to get each other killed, he sat put and if everyone did the same, they'd all have lived so it's realistic in that regard as in real life the little kid often is the smarter than the adults.

As others have pointed out, this ending was a lot darker than King’s novella and King likes the movie’s ending better.

The book ends ambiguously. They have another encounter or two at a gas station, and basically drive off into the mist and we don't know what happens. i like King's ending better because there's no turning back from the pandora's box that was opened, basically. However, the movie is pretty good and the end is brutal and shocking and you don't get enough of that in movies, so good on the director/screenwriter.

Without going on a deranged conspiracy theory rant for 30 minutes with facebook "proof"(which are all doctored videos or fake experts) or videos edited in such a way that they are basically saying something completely different then what an unedited version shows.
They seem to think the West Wing is how politics work but as you can see with Trump just calling people out and bulling people into what you want them to do can have it's place in politics. You do need to make sure people sign your bills which Trump wasn't great at that but he still got a large amount of Republic simps(Ted Cruz/Marco Rubio) to sign off on a few things. If a politician can learn which ones to bully and which ones to kiss up to or give political favors to they can be actually effective at the job.

The audience cheered when Oli shot that crazy lady and everyone kind of sat there at the ending

I think everyone in every cinema who sat through the film cheered. In my theatre in Belgium it got a standing ovation.
@@MrTuubster That's because people in Belgium (as well as everywhere outside the US) understand good storytelling. Americans seem to only expect happy endings to every story... no matter how grim or unlikely.

The ending is awesome because it’s so brutal. Not many people would dare to go there. I still sometimes wonder what The Walking Dead would have been like if they hadn’t fired Darabont after the 1st season. 😔

"The Walking Dead" was okay, right up until the end of Season 3. After that, it went steadily downhill, because there really wasn't a compelling villain afterward.
"Frank wrote a new ending that I loved. It is the most shocking ending ever and there should be a law passed stating that anybody who reveals the last 5 minutes of this film should be hung from their neck until dead"- Stephen King

Some notes on the ending and the movie in general:
King's ending originally had them just drive away into the Mist, but with a bit of hope that they may find other people somewhere. Darabont got the idea for the ending from a line in the novella where David contemplates the revolver (paraphrase: "If worst comes to worst, I have four bullets, and I can find another way out for me"). Darabont took that idea and expanded it to its worst possible conclusion (not only that David uses the gun, but that it's a pointless act).
The studio, on reading the script, offered to *double* Darabont's budget if he would change the ending to something less downbeat, but he stuck to his guns and actually used the lower budget to his advantage, hiring a fast-paced TV crew he'd worked with on "The Shield." (That's why the flick has a lot more handheld action than his prior two movies, which were all steadicam and dolly track.) This detail reminds me of how Hitchcock filmed "Psycho" with mostly the same crew from *his* TV show, "Alfred Hitchcock Presents."
One scene that wasn't in the novella was the death of the MP played by Sam Witwer. Darabont expanded the military involvement with the Mist from a likelihood (the "Arrowhead Project" is mentioned a few times in the novella, and two MP's commit suicide, with a suggestion of guilt as the cause) into a certainty, with Witwer's new character being a voice to relay their involvement directly. On a personal note, that's probably my favorite scene in the film. Witwer's performance is devastating.
One more note: there was a black and white version of *The Mist* that Darabont supervised. It's his preferred way of watching the film, because the black-and-white evokes insect monster movies of the '50s like "Them!" and "Beginning of the End." As a bonus, the smaller color palette also helps the creature FX to blend in better. The only way to watch this version currently is to buy physical media that's labeled the "Collector's Edition."
Also, Stephen King LOVED the new ending and wished he had wrote it himself
The black and white version is superior! I just adjust my TV to black and white when I watch it lol
I can see how the black and white would help some of the aging CGI blend in better. I like the movie, but I still prefer the novella.
That's interesting about the budget could have been doubled. Personally, I would have preferred more special effects and less handheld if they left off the grim ending. Some of the CGI just doesn't hold up well, and that's probably because they couldn't give it the highest quality with the budget.

The ending was just so mentally brutal , it was a major gut punch when I first saw it. It's like a tagline I heard once. Don't fear the Apocalypse , fear the people who survive the Apocalypse.
I remember seeing this in theaters with my parents, sister, and ex-wife. It wasn't a packed auditorium but pretty full. After that twist ending and once the closing credits began, there was absolute silence in the theater. I think we were all expecting a "happy ending" or maybe an ambiguous one (like the novella), not something this dark and definite. It was truly a gut punch and ballsy move by the director, and sparked quite the conversation between my family afterward.
Thomas Jane is such an underrated actor, he never gets enough credit for the work he's done.
You both looked so shell-shocked when this movie ended, which means it definitely did what Darabont wanted. I like how you picked up on the people from Walking Dead, I wonder if you noticed that several of the actors were also in Green Mile and Shawshank Redemption. Darabont is one of those directors who is very loyal to 'his actors'.

The main cast acted pretty reasonably most of the time, but suddenly they want to kill themselves as soon as they run out of gas…what..? They didn’t even wait until a creature came and tried to kill them. Suicide should have been the last option. They were so many better routes available to them yet suddenly their character’s brains just shut off at the end to give us a “tragic” ending. The movie is much better if you just shut it off after they start driving away lol..

The movie has one of the most shocking and controversial endings I've ever seen. It will leave you with a gut punch.
Hated the ending. I thought the movie was a very good adaptation of the novella, but the ending just pisses me off. Not because it's not a happy one, but just because it feels gimmicky. As a dad, I would *never* do what he did until I knew for sure that all hope was lost. I would never kill my kid until some damn thing had a hold of him and even then I'd be fighting to save him. It was cheap to do a twist and not worthy of the rest of the movie. Just my opinion, my brother and I completely disagree on this and that's ok!
I really love the ending of the novella, "hartford" and "hope" but you don't know what's going to happen.
@@rickanderson1683 I would MUCH rather it have ended with them disappearing into the mist. It would have been much more hopeless/bleak like the ending of John Carpenter's The Thing. As it is, the ending feels like manipulative schlock. It actually cheapens the entire movie for me.

Stephen King preferred the ending in the movie just FYI.
controversial for sure, as you can see here already. A lot of people really hated it. I think it is one of the best endings ever. It leaves the audience with less than nothing.
This was Darabont's ending written for the movie, the ending of King's book was different.

I showed this movie to a friend's young teenage daughter when I was over at their house one evening. I believe it's the first time she encountered a movie wherein the characters don't do anything "wrong" but still fail in the end in the most tragic way. She was SOOOO angry afterward, yelling "THAT'S NOT FAIR!!!" She HATED the ending. I was very pleased with myself.

Cool note -- King wrote this story after a real storm while he was living in Maine. On a visit to Maine years later, I visited the real-life food store that was the setting of his story.
The conversation about us picking sides and dreaming up ways to kill each other is so true.
in the end that's exactly what happened. they killed eachother! David became what he feared about Carmody...a jim jones who convinced his followers that he should kill them.
I remember seeing the movie "Seven" in the theaters and being in absolute shock. I think this ending floored me even more, and that is SAYING A LOT! Like you said, HE LIVED and was "technically" saved after his actions. No words. Great reactions and great movie selections.
The Seven ending was executed to near perfection. This ending was a cool idea, but poorly executed.
I love the ending. If you think about it - it does actually carry a positive message. The message being: Never EVER give up no matter how dire things are looking. Very brutally made point, but still :)
I don't think that was the point. The point was just to be devastating and tragic. They could have waited three more days in that car and about to die of dehydration and the military still would have showed up 30 seconds after their death, because that was the point.

The Valve game Half-Life was inspired by the novella and the Black Mesa incident was meant to be a parallel/alternative event to the one that takes place in Maine. In fact, it was even originally titled Quiver, a reference to the Arrowhead military base

They changed the ending of the story for the movie and when asked if he was angry about it, Stephen King replied that the only thing he was angry about was not having written the ending that way himself. If you can shock a guy like Stephen King with that ending you know you've got something.
The scariest part, is all of these actions and reactions to a horrible situation, feel so natural.
That's one of the best ending of a movie that is so impactful, the dread, the hopelessness, the what if... Much better than if he would have just be eaten, then it's a regular dark ending, this is legendary. I love it.
The movie basically showed what the extremes of hope and despair can lead to. The situation at the grocery store showed what taking hope to the extremes can result in blind faith and fanaticism. The ending shows the destructive nature of completely giving into despair.
My grandma was a crazy evangelizing doomsayer with a following - just lik3 like Mrs Carmody. Life and death.
So this movie charmed me with the most realistic monster.
Fear doesn't turn ordinary people into religious psychopath murders, this is a movie...

they all feared Carmody because they thought she was a jim jones who would convince them all to drink the kool-aid... but in the end it was David serving up his own brand of kool-aid... to the point where they willingly allowed him to shoot them all.

I think the first half of this movie especially foreshadowed a lot of the division we’re seeing in America right now because of the pandemic.
George A Romero warned us decades ago thaf the real threat isn't a virus, it's panicked stupid people.
The lead character`s painting at the beginning of the film is an Easter-egg for King fans. The cowboy depicted is Roland Deschain , the protagonist in The Dark Tower series of books.
The creatures in the film were designed by comics legend Berni Wrightson , co- creator of The Swamp Thing .
The ending of the movie is very different from the version Stephen King wrote but he very much approved it . You can find the story in his collection of novellas & short stories called " Skeleton Crew ".

There are 4 Walking Dead actors I know in this film.
Carol, Andrea, Dale and one of the soldiers is Morales from season 1.
The film is directed by Frank Darabont, who worked on the earlier seasons of TWD
Sam Witwer, the young soldier that gets stabbed and thrown outside, appeared in Walking Dead as the soldier in the tank that Rick climbs into at the end of the first episode. Also, Thomas Jane was up for the role of Rick Grimes at one point.
Their characters died in TWD while Carol still survives .
They should have help get her kids.
So sad that FD was fired from the TWD show. I remember YMS making a video detailing the whole story. TWD is now literally a walker itself. I just dare to imagine what the show would've been if he had stayed.
Not just that. Frank Darabont the screen writer and director, was a show runner on TWD. Denise Huth, who was a producer on TWD was also a producer on this movie.

Great movie to start off October with, While Stephen King wrote the book Frank Darabont wrote the screenplay for this movie and he changed the ending When Stephen King saw the changes he made he thought that Frank's ending was better and he wished that he had thought about it. Obviously, Franks's ending was WAY darker than the book's ending and Stephen king loved it. Not every story needs to have a happy ending, and sometimes a movies ending SHOULD be devastating.
yeah, I hated the ending because of the tragedy, but agree that all Hollywood endings shouldn't turn out roses all the time.... just like life, to give it more credibility.

The original Carrie, with Sissy Spacek, is one of the best Stephen King adaptations. I hope it makes your list.
The moment I clicked on this I was like, "you two are definitely gonna feel some type of way at the end of it." Lol
I couldn't believe they took the darkest route at the end. However, I also inwardly applauded them for doing so.

I always got the sense, that if Ollie had been properly armed with an arsenal of weaponry, that he most likely could have taken on whatever was in the mist, all by himself! ;-)
The music by the excellent Dead Can Dance at the end really added to the drama of the moment.

when this movie came out people reacted the Same way you two did ...I was shocked at first, then I was laughing and cheering..best believable ending for a situation that if happen IRL a lot of people would have dealt with the reality the same way, I mean look how we turn against each other with this pandemic, and this is no where near horrific like the Mist.
The ending is a complete punch to the gut. Just as devastating how ever many times you see the film.
Frank came up with the ending and it got praise from Stephen King himself. King called Frank about the ending, saying along the lines "If he could go back and rewrite the story he would change it to the Movie's ending." Such a good film, it left me in tears.
They could always reissue the novel with this ending👀
There is an audio book version of 'Thr Mist" that was in 3D surround sound with a full cast, it really made you feel like you were a part of the story. Hands down my favorite audio book.

Saw this on a Friday afternoon the day it came out. The packed theater became so silent in the end you could hear a pin drop. It hit people right in the gut.

One thing it took me a while to pick up on: Mrs. Carmody could be right about everything. The bug doesn’t sting her, everything she predicts comes true, and once David’s son is sacrificed, salvation comes. While I don’t think we are literally supposed to believe that, I think it’s brilliant that Darabont left that room for doubt.
Yup, that was also my thoughts when I saw the movie the first time.
I think it's bleaker if she's wrong. Because then there was no point to the killing at all, it was truly worthless. Also, it doesn't explain how the military caravan just showed up out of the blue with clear sky behind it: that's been a day-plus in the making and not just magically conjured out of thin air.
David’s son wasn’t sacrificed. Maybe you mean that she gave her own life for salvation, like she’s Jesus or something.
With the bug, it reminded me of stinging insects like we have. Ever have a wasp land on you? I have a few times, and I just keep still until it leaves. A lot of people flail around and swat at bees and wasps, and that’s the worst thing to do. It might be that the bug only stung the girl because it was agitated. Maybe she was swinging at it or something.
Oh shit, I've seen this movie dozens of times and that thought never occured to me! I usually pick up on stuff like that. Darabont is definitely brilliant, and yet now my soul is more lost in finding this out.
@@daerdevvyl4314 He was talking about at the end when his own Dad had to kill him (reminds me of another story where a Father had to Sacrifice his own son to "save the world"). Metaphorically speaking that is a sacrifice, and 15 to 30 seconds after that is when Salvation came (tanks, soldiers, etc).
The best aspect of your videos is that you spend so long analysing the movies at the end. You're not in a hurry to end the video like so many reaction channels are. Top work !!

The ending for this movie blindsided us Stephen King fans as well, the book this movie is based off of has a bit of a nonending to it. Instead of the group running out of gas they bunker down in a Howard Johnson for the night and David, the protagonist, finishes writing the events of the Mist (i.e the rest of the story) down on a notepad before leaving the manuscript on the desk of the hotel lobby so yeah this was completely out of left field. I'm glad you both got to experience this film without having the ending spoiled for you, it's an emotional gut punch for sure
To answer how it went with audiences, I went to see this in theatres when it came out with a group of friends. The overall audience was raucous; yelling at the screen and cheering when Mrs. Carmody died because she was getting on everyone’s nerves. When the ending hit…stunned silence. Even leaving the theatre, looking at the people’s faces as we walked out, all our jaws were dropped and everyone was still processing what happened. To this day, I’ve never seen the rug pulled out from the audience in such a way that it left everyone with a sense of being stunned and filled with dread.

As depressing as the ending is it drives home the importance of hope in a desperate situation. Whether they believed in a higher power, survival, or just each other as long as they believed in something they had a chance. Once they gave up hope it was over.
@@aj897 In the book the characters figured out that the creatures most likely hunted by smell, since the mist muffled both sound and vision. So the first group who left were out of luck, but David's group knew if they got into a car as quickly as possible, then they could be "camouflaged". I can't remember if the movie mentions that detail, I haven't seen the full-length film in ages.
Sometimes it's in one's best interest to give up hope.
One of the most devastating, gut-punch endings of all time, and I love it. I loved that they had the balls to go there with it. Movies don't take risks like that anymore. If they did a conventional, happy ending, nobody would remember The Mist. As it stands, the ending of The Mist is legendary.
The scene where Tom Jane and the other sensible survivors are coming up with a plan to escape before things get worse. Is definitely my favorite part of the movie. For those of you reading this. If you ever find yourself in a struggle to survive a life or death ordeal. It doesn't matter if you are alone or with others. Take the time to come up with a smart plan. If once you don't succeed, try try again. Never give up as long as you are alive.
I absolutely love the horrifying shocking ending of this film, and it's one of my favorite horror films. This is a real sleeper of a film, that has fantastic writing, acting, character development, action, and horror. This is a wonderful film. Also, note, homage to "The Thing" with the painting on the wall in the beginning; my other all-time favorite horror film.
There is a common theme between this and Shawshank. They are both about hope. In one the main character never gives up hope. In the other, the main character pays a huge price for giving up hope. This was on purpose by the director.
I doubt many people made that connection before they slit their wrists after watching The Mist.
Darabont was definitely adapting the much more matter-of-fact novella to make that point. I love the ending ("love"?), but it never really made sense to me unless I look at the whole thing as a morality play. If it was a purely "realistic" situation, the military couldn't have caught up with them like that. And the woman making it home to her kids and then being evacuated? That made no sense either. But viewed as an illustration of judgement against David for his loss of hope...with the woman there to demonstrate the reward for hope...the pieces connect together a bit better.

So the reason you’re able to go,

It’s because you have hope.
I know the film is SOOO dark and bleak, but the ultimate message of this film is hope. Never lose it. That’s why the woman who looked for her kids survived and David’s family didn’t. Is because she had hope, and David didn’t. And the joke......was actually on him.
You might’ve heard the ending to the book was originally around the gigantic monster point. The book ends with them pulling into a motel and potentially siphoning more gas. With David listening to the radio only hearing static and a brief word, “Hartford”
So the book ends with David forcing himself to have HOPE to believe Hartford Connecticut is where safety will be.
This story might be the darkest I’ve ever seen, but it’s without a doubt the most hopeful
This is one that has stuck with me over the years as one of my favorite horror movies. It really devastated me the first time I watched it!
I love the fact, that the actor, and actresses that play Carol, Dale, and Andrea are all in this movie together. This movie left me stunned when I saw it in the theater. Honestly, I didn't know how to feel after the movie was over. What's interesting, the ending that Stephen King wrote was totally different from what we were given on the silver screen. The ending in the book, was left totally up the air. As the story is written from the first person narrative from David Drayton, and at the end he just leaves his notebook in a store for someone to find as they venture off into the mist.
Stephen King himself, is quoted as saying that he wished he had thought of that ending himself as he loved it.
This is easily one of my favourite films for the stunningly bleak ending. I love showing it to new people and just watching their reaction at the end. Great reaction, guys!
I have been waiting for this!!!!!! The thing I love most about the King/Darabont trilogy is how all three have such powerful emotional endings. Shawshank is hope, The Green Mile is sadness and The Mist is utter despair.
The way I see it those that survived are going to have to live with what they did. As soon as the fear goes, as soon as they feel things are back under control, what they did and what they were willing to do is going to hit them hard. Particularly without someone preaching to them constantly. Knowing that they are capable of such inhumane actions will affect them forever. This is such a good social commentary on what people are capable of and how quickly civilisation disappears when fear takes over.
I thought for years this movie was unrealistic with how fast people turned, despite being in a stocked grocery store. However after covid and Trump, I can totally see stupid shit like this happening.
Sadly I agree, if I was in a situation like this. The church lady Cult Nut job. Would of went for a walk to meet all her buggy friends five minutes after she started acting Coo Coo for her Coco Puffs! Semper fi

What a punch to the gut that ending was. Impossible to forget.
How come, when contact is made with another dimension such as here and Event Horizon, no one ever makes contact with the cute puppy dimension or the duckling dimension?
The ending shows that love can have terrible consequences. A shot is a cleaner death than having alien spiders gestating within you for hours. How many people would allow their child to be cocooned, or worse? Anyone who has shown mercy to an ailing pet can relate.

Was just thinking this. A lot of people were like “Oh my god he killed his son”, but after witnessing all that shit, what would you rather have happen to you or your child? Die instantly from a quick gunshot wound or be brutally and slowly killed by alien creatures that can cocoon you like you’re a helpless fly and rip and melt your flesh off?
Love the way the movie shows insanity AND how we become monsters. One of my fav movies 👌

the thing about dark endings to movies is you'll never forget them.
This was my all-time favorite Stephen King short story. It was the longest one in the collection of short stories in that book (which I forget the title) and this adaptation is one of the best Stephen King (horror) adaptations, plus Frank Darabont came up with an ending that was gut-wrenching, as some others have said, while the original story was open-ended with them still driving through the mist on the road. Stephen King LOVED the ending Frank came up with 'cause he said he couldn't figure out how to end it definitively. I have the blu ray and it has both the theatrical release and the director's cut which is mostly the same but it's all in black and white, like an old school horror movie. Frank Darabont said he wanted to release it that way but the studio said no. It is very effective. You'd think taking the color out would take something away from the storytelling but it really doesn't and gives it a whole different feel.
You would think you would lose something without color, but I found out when I saw the b/w version of Logan that I focused on the story and the characters over the effects. It allowed me to be blown away by an excellent script and top tier acting. I believe this would be the same effect.
Black and white has come a long way. It used to be simply a limitation.... now it is used when someone feels "artsy". I must confess that I just don't get it. You don't see in black and white. Saying that it somehow helps you concentrate on the story.... how? Does this mean you can't concentrate on day to day life as well? After all everything is in color around you. Makes no sense and seems more pretentious than anything.
@@Trainwheel_Time visual effects in a lot of modern films can, at times, take away from what could be a deeply nuanced and personal story. Black and white can still be used today in regards to limitations if filmmakers still wish to shoot on film. It helped Kevin Smith, Christopher Nolan, De Palma, Scorsese among others. Some filmmakers use black and white to capture a period of time ala The Artist, Ed Wood, or Schindler's List. Can it be pretentious yes but all art can be argued to be pretentious. Black and white I think is on par with that grimy grindhouse look of the 60s and 70s for a style of filmmaking. It's all in how it's being utilized. If it's not your preference cool I respect that. That doesn't mean I don't love a sweet visual effects feast or trash cinema.
You have to put yourself in in their shoes. After seeing all the death and the sheer numbers of creatures and then you see that huge ground shaking creature crossing the road ,its understandable that some people would give up and abandon all hope.I will not rewatch this film. One viewing is enough!
I think the central theme is to HAVE faith. Not faith akin to Ms. Carmody, but faith in something higher than the mist and it’s creatures. As soon as they run out of gas they become apathetic towards their chances and give in to despair and choose to die instead of waiting for something better. It’s very much one of the most darkest depressing endings I’ve ever seen, and kudos to Darabont for sticking to his guns and making the bold choice for this ending. Hell, when even Stephen King himself wished he came up with this ending, you know you’ve done good.
So faith in complete bullshit that doesn't exist. Doesn't seem all that much different than Ms. Carmody's faith. Only fools believe. Intelligent people use logic and reason to ascertain the truth.
I love this movie, it's incredibly complex.
The Mist is a living entity, the creatures are part of it, it decides who lives and who dies.
There is a theory that say that the mist is God's wrath upon mankind, that's why it spared the crazy woman, because she was spreading His word; and that's why it spared "Carol", because all she wanted was to go to her children, it was all about love.
And the movie is all about how we easily lose our humanity in moments of stress.
One day I want a curveball where Samantha does the intro and introduces her husband TBR:)

I'm glad you enjoyed this and it really is a conversation piece! What would you do? It was a scary short story a long time ago when I first read it, sometime in the 80s. I am glad this movie didn't disappoint though there were some changes. The cast did well, there's some parts were a little dry as far as the script, but they didn't have that much time to fill out characters as much as they could have. Just enough to show who to hate and who to care for.
The whole time I'm watching and I'm just thinking, "boy! Are you 2 in for it at the end!" I'm glad people do these reactions on TH-cam, as I've seen most of these movies and it's good to feel like part of a group that hasn't seen it in knowing what's going to happen, seeing your reactions and remembering my own. I think we can all do that man moan that the father does in the end, just so much anguish and despair period hard to believe you played The Punisher, I think that had some similarities to this movie, I don't want to spoil it if you haven't seen it. It was a good movie as well, not a horror movie so much though. I recommend you watch that one if you haven't, Thomas Jane in The Punisher
The ending of this movie is iconic for that ending...it infuriated audiences and still does till this day. If you guys liked the Mist, i would highly highly suggest The Fog from 1980...one of the best horror movies ever! B)
It was the perfect ending, far too many hollywood movies have a "and they all lived happily ever after" ending as the characters ride off on rainbow unicorns carrying shiny balloons, I wish more moviemakers would opt for realistic and dark endings like this.
What I like about the ending is how realistic it is. These creatures are deadly to unarmed civilians with no training but there is no way that they could stand up to the might of the US military. That giant walking leviathan looks scary but a single Apache attack helicopter could kill it. The apache would just hover at 1000 meters and unload it's ordinance until the thing goes down. People don't realize just how lethal the military really is.
that's why most zombie stories skip over the actual fall of civilization and go straight to the post-apocalypse part
The studio actually offered Frank Darabont more money if he changed the ending. He refused. That takes "brass balls", a commitment to the art.
I love that Stephen King himself said about this ending: "I wish, I would have come up with that!" !
I saw this movie when it came out in the theaters and loved the ending. It's an anti-ending that, to me, works very well.

I love this movie. I love how David is basically Drew Struzan (he does the poster art for every Frank Darabont/Stephen King movie). I love how there isn't any music. And the ending is so fucking brutal.
The locusts are something mentioned in the Bible as a part of the End Times. They're supposed to be part scorpion, part horse, and part locust.
There is a version of this out there in black and white--the way Darabont wanted it to be released. And Stephen King said that he liked this ending better than the one he wrote in the novella.
I watched this all the way through knowing what was coming, and being anxiety-ridden for the two of you having to see it. One of my favorite King works, and one of my favorite horror movies.
Safe in the car or not, as they diverge from the grocery store, the creatures seem to become larger and more Lovecraftian. You know the situation is dire, bleak and nihilistic when a land dwelling creature that dwarfs a blue whale 🐋 just casually strolls by. I'd have done the same thing.
Now that you've done the Darabont/King movies you must do the Rob Reiner/King movies - Misery & Stand by Me.
Gotta love The Meathead, Mike Stivic. Turned out to be a pretty good director for a guy who was so effective as the self-important son in law of the bigot Archie Bunker.

The first time I saw this movie, I was blown away by the ending. It's extremely dark, but also very original and interesting.
I still haven't seen The Mist fully, but when someone showed me the ending I was in awe how great it was. Not only because they dared to give the movie a depressing ending, but how well it was executed. That they used "The Call of the Seraphim" from Dead can Dance, a tune I already knew, to make it so haunting. It was perfect.

I love anything with a massive “fuck you” or major gut punch ending. Remembering the Good Times, even though it’s a book (and a pretty short book at that), has an ending like that and it is easily one of my favorite books.
I remember talking about this for hours after the movie finished.
I loved the ending as the whole film is about these people making hard decisions in an impossible situation and the end was the perfect cherry on the cake.
At the beginning, he is painting a cowboy in front of a door, with a rose. It's a direct reference to the "Dark Tower" cycle. The best King's books imho and what he calls 'The Jupiter of his imagination'
Also, never watch the Dark Tower movie, it's a huge pile of slimy spit in the fans face.

I read the book last year and it was incredible. One of my favorite King books. King does a great job at making people question who the real monsters of the story are. They gave up too quickly & easily
Yes, this was written back when King was still putting out quality work. A very very long time ago.
It's not about giving up, it's about saving your loved ones from fate worse than death.
The Mist is actually a novel, not a book. Here it's in a book called "The Mist", but it consist of few more stories: The Mist, The Walk, Word Processor of the Gods, Beach World and Ballad of the Flexible Bullet. It is still 270 pages long, where The Mist is around half the book, but it still is not enough for an entire book.
I'm so glad you decided to do this movie. It's one of the few horror movies that I could never forget, because of the ending. I agree with you, this is by far one of the darkest endings of a movie I've ever seen. It lingers with you.
4:45 - In Denmark we have syrens all over the country to give the alarm in case of an air strike. Every year in May they try them to see if they still work and they sound exactly the same! My first year here I didn't know and I was so spooked.
4:57 - There are 3 actors that were in the walking dead too (Andrea, Dale, and Carol). The actor playing Dale was also in The Green Mile and Shawshanks Redemption.
6:20 - This is also how it feels to live in Denmark some days in the winter. One time the bus was driving so slow because the driver couldn't see any further than 3 meters.
