  • Today I "begin" to replace many of the old and worn components in my Element's suspension. I started with front lower control arms, and planned front and rear struts... until the entire job came to a screeching halt. After some consideration, I have decided to push the build out and break it down into multiple parts, updating as I go, and documenting the struggles, road blocks, and eventual fixes that I will go through as I progress. All parts and tools purchased to complete this rebuild will be linked in descriptions.

    Sometimes it is best to go ahead and buy the ball joints, sway bar links, etc, even if you are not planning on replacing. Sometimes they break during removal, or once apart, you find they are more worn or damaged than you thought. That way you already have them on hand. If all goes well, you just return them and get your money back.
    And the tool rental/loaner programs at the parts stores are a huge help for those occasional use tools...you are there getting parts anyway.
    Oh, and pre-treat all the bolts and nuts with penetrating oil before you get started, maybe even the night before and again before you start wrenching. It makes a big difference.

    I have a 2006 Honda Element EX.

    Whoever is planning on replacing the front lower control arms on the Element... oh boy you are going to in for a treat. Those babies don't ever want to come out. So here's a video that will save your sanity. Link : th-cam.com/video/Mm-3m2fY1Tw/w-d-xo.html. From now on, that's just the route I am going to take. It's just so much easier. In the video, these guys used files and a broken pick axe. For me, I jammed the end of my breaker bar. No rental tools needed. The whole method is unconventional, but it works. Also as far as the front, lower control arms. You will spend more time than you want to trying to press in ball joints and bushings. They don't come out easy neither because they were never designed to be pressed out to begin with. I had to use air tools to do it! In my opinion and from my awful experience, just buy new front lower controls arms.

      yea... basically any wedge will eventually work to get the unstuck depending on the degree of rust and amount of time they have been together. That being said... the correct tools are not particularly expensive and easily accessibly, I have used multiple methods and the tool seems to work best with the least amount of hassle, and can be easily justified by doing the job myself (heres a link to one thats roughly $20: www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B099WQJYM9/?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_plhdr=t&aaxitk=6547b1001973c3d5b179c467552fcb8a&hsa_cr_id=0&qid=1708987599&sr=1-2-9e67e56a-6f64-441f-a281-df67fc737124&ref_=sbx_be_s_sparkle_mcd_asin_1_title&pd_rd_w=bN2dQ&content-id=amzn1.sym.417820b0-80f2-4084-adb3-fb612550f30b%3Aamzn1.sym.417820b0-80f2-4084-adb3-fb612550f30b&pf_rd_p=417820b0-80f2-4084-adb3-fb612550f30b&pf_rd_r=5PF012YBXXHM4CRZRWRG&pd_rd_wg=dCpxG&pd_rd_r=29c01412-c92e-4c78-ad88-c0f26b59df22)... as for the actual ball joint removal yea, its a paint and unfortunately the joint is part of the knuckle, not the control arm, so unless you are replacing the whole knuckle assemble, which can be costly and have man attached parts, bearing/hub, etc. it may just be a labor of love... some shops will also remove and install ball joints if you bring them the knuckle. To each their own... the biggest thing I have learned working on cars, is that there is a ton of different ways to get to the same solution.

    I've redone the suspension on mine. No matter what you do these vehicles will never be a nice smooth ride. They go over bumps like a pick-up. I took my blind friend for a drive over a book written in brail, and she was able to read it cause the car just feels EVERY single bump on the road!

    • @BILLT_YT
      @BILLT_YT  ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess to each their own... smooth is a relative thing i guess... yea it will never be like riding on a cloud, its a honda element, I wouldnt expect it.... but its definitely much improved over the old worn suspension... no clunks or excessive play

    It is always easier to just fork them out and replace the ball joints unless they are already new. then they will come out easier anyway. I also just cut off and replace sway bar links. They are a pain and not very expensive. A whole new suspension on my E including Monroe loaded struts was $270.00 a wheel for the front. But there again up here, because of rust, you learn what not to fight and PB blaster and a good cutting wheel saves a lot of cussing..lol Good Video.

    • @BILLT_YT
      @BILLT_YT  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely.. that's basically the process I rolled through kinda assuming that I would inevitably have to replace them but seeing what I could get away with... I don't drive the car more than once a week or so

      @@BILLT_YT I do not drive mine much either Esp now with gas prices. I use my Yaris. But that gives me time to do it right and take my time. If I take a couple days to do something I do not care. But others only have their Es So your videos helps them tackle something they might pay thousands for at a shop.

    Good video. Sh*t happens, just learn from it. Next time use an old mechanics trick when removing ball jt: take the castle nut completely off and flip it over so flat of nut gets gets pressure and won't distort. Also, instead of fancy/expensive ball joint remover, smack the spindle close to bj with a BFH (big f*cking hammer) . Ball joint studs oftentimes pops loose.

    • @BILLT_YT
      @BILLT_YT  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea... I did that (off camera) and they were still stuck in... I was lucky to be in a position to just commit to replacing them since it's not my primary vehicle
