      BTW Skallagrim you should play in the Medieval combat games (or what so ever the name is called). The participants there really lack the knowledge of using weapon, don't even mention armored weaponry tactics & skills.

      except for the rayman franchise. that was allways fun. but yeah, best example is assassinscreed 5. the gameplay trailers had me so hyped, but the things that i was hyped for, like the "players freedom to choose" and the better parcour, haven't really turned out to be a thing. the parkour feels just like before except that it is even more broken than the climbing in ac 4, the buttons for upwards and downwards are really not all that usefull, and the "assassination opportunities" are just the same thing like the side missions before except for the fact that they trigger some events.
      wow that was rambly...

    About the katana cutting through armor, it seems all swords do that in the the gameplay.
    The biggest thing I personally noticed was how _slow_ all the fighting was...although until we get Matrix-level VR, that's a necessary weasel.

    • @VampC
      @VampC 9 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Timothy McLean Yup, all swords probably do that in gameplay, but people find it fun to bash katanas as usual.

    • @Skallagrim
      @Skallagrim  9 ปีที่แล้ว +104

      Ganondorf Dragmire
      Of course they do it in gameplay, as it would be difficult to implement specific anti-armor techniques. But in the trailer they only show katanas slicing through plate. Those pre-rendered scenes usually portray what is supposed to happen (story-wise, if you will), independent of game mechanics.

    • @VampC
      @VampC 9 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      ***** It happens in all games with swords, people just seem to notice it more with katanas. Elder scrolls, assassins creed cinematics, everything.

    • @VampC
      @VampC 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ***** I suppose, but I honestly don't think this game is suppose to be realistic. It just looks like they tried to have cool game mechanics while throwing in some real sword techniques here and there.

      Samurai armor was designed to absorb a blow not deflect it which was decently effective against the lighter Katana but you''ll have a bad time if you think that it would absorb a blow from a heavier weapon

    • @undeadgames309
      @undeadgames309 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Of course in the game samurai are much weaker than the knights and Vikings.

    • @RuLeZ1988
      @RuLeZ1988 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      But on the other hand a samurai Armour is not very heavy at all, which gives him a much better mobility and with enough skill the needed advantage to overcome the heavier and stronger armour of an knight for example. Atleast i dont think that a person within a heavy armour like the knight one, could keep up with the speed and mobility of a person within a light armour like the samurai does.

    Dang there are quite a bit of weebs in the comments getting upset. Guys a katana is a terrible weapon compared to the other weapons in the game. During the times that the katana was used it was made out of terrible metals.

    • @natesal5037
      @natesal5037 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The metal was terrible but the Japanese folded the metal so it would bend instead of snapping

    • @serialkillerwhale
      @serialkillerwhale 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Folding the steel only serves to reduce the carbon content and spread it evenly. It still leaves a brittle blade that can't withstand the kind of stresses a european blade could.

    • @RaitoYagami88
      @RaitoYagami88 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's not true.
      Katanas are probably superior to viking weapons, by virtue of being made of better steel.

      WhiteBones Kara as were heavy for their size and weighed about the same as a long sword with the longsword being more durable and faster due to it being longer as well as being cheaper and well balanced

    • @TheGrumbliestPuppy
      @TheGrumbliestPuppy 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      They didn't actually use Katanas for war except as a side-arm. They used primarily spears and bows. And they lived on an island with very little quality iron, so they did amazing things with what little resources they had, but those limitations still held them back.

    • @strahd09
      @strahd09 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      indeed :) but a better thing to say might be that complete realism would probably not work for a multiplayer game at least.
      hard ware limitations, bandwidth, latency all that kind of shit would make the insane requirements for perfect realism practically impossible to play with and would probably have no balance at all :P
      some of the videos i've seen have some "the fuck?" moments
      i did take a look at the kingdom come game.. and that looks interesting :) not multiplayer.. but not all games need to have one, honestly some games should not have multiplayer/single player even though they do....
      I just hope the AI does not have glaring holes in them.. most AI so far is fun enough in the start until you see the patterns/holes and then the rest of the game gets more like a boring step 1.. step 2.. step 3.. dead
      nice video in any case :) there will always be some strange bullshit when it comes to different technologies that clash together.
      but for the sake of argument. the gameplay basicly have the katana wielding samurai as a quick/nimble bastard but with low damage and it seems like there's also ressurect options, though i'm not sure you can do them on people that get executed. Could it be explained that the low damage is due to not going through armor but instead hurting the target in a similar (but less effective) way as a mace? and the bigger damage spikes comes from good hits on open areas and such?
      The samurai also get some other "classes" one have a effective weapon against armor (tetsubo).. but like some of the vikings.. next to no armor
      and luckily the naginata and odachi aswell
      all in all cant wait to test the game myself.. and i'm hoping for the best :)

      You're talking about the DLC. The main game is medieval.

    • @andrewp8284
      @andrewp8284 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      IIRC M&B has the most realistic variety of medieval weaponry, also realistic models. For instance bastard swords, one handed swords, one handed axes, spears, etc don't really look all thick and fantasy-ish, they look like everyday medieval weaponry. The fighting system is more realistic than a lot of games, for instance Skyrim, in some ways, though games which are coming or are out like Mordhau, Kingdom Come: Deliverance, and For Honor do appear to have wards which is much more realistic than M&B and I believe Mordhau is the most dynamic since you have a full 360 degree attack and defense radius (meaning the instead of just an overhead swing, left and right swing, and thrust, you can cut, thrust, and parry diagonally too, and from any other angle). It also has half swording I believe. Chivalry has an M&B style directional attack system but defense is simplified. Personally I like how the spear in it has 2 thrusts instead of M&B's 1 thrust and otherwise smacking them with the shaft.

    • @andrewp8284
      @andrewp8284 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Andrew Penman Viking Conquest DLC allows you to thrust with a spear overhead as well as underhand, which really helps I think. Spears kind of got the short end of the stick in earlier M&B.

      +Scream Like You Mean It Agreed. As impressive as the 1sr person video is, fighting systems in games need to be engaging over hours upon hours of gameplay/time. As such there is an expectation of some dramatics as we see in film. Videos games are getting better at offering variety of styles, but true to life combat is better left for enthusiasts and for the skeletal framework on which to build on. Bushido Blade II way back in the day tried to keep things "real" and did it pretty well for the era, even offering a 1st person view. A shame the series has never been properly revisited, it'd be fun to see how it would work on modern hardware.

    • @valky5318
      @valky5318 9 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Ganondorf Dragmire Exactly. I don't see why people are bashing on katanas, katanas are pretty good for what they are supposed to be used (e.g. killing no- to lightly armored opponents from the quickdraw). I mean, sure, Katanas can not cut through armor - but neither can anything else and it is stil being done in many video games simply because the technology is/was not advanced enough to show proper sword fighting or because it would be too difficult to implement it in a fun and intuitive combat system.
      So, instead of bashing katanas to the ground why not take a look at them and ask yourself how they would actually perform when used by a skilled western swordsman against a guy in full plate. Would they break on the first strike? I don't think so - katanas are not that brittle. If you don't block but instead deflect you would be able to defend yourself without breaking your weapon. Also what about halfswording? Since Katanas are a lot sharper than western weapons - which isn't necessarily a good thing - you might actually cut yourself, but since only one side is sharp you could only touch the dull part of the blade. I think you would be at a disadvantage when using them but it would still be more practically than say, a stick.

      As cool as they look, I agree that they are over hyped and exaggerated by most people on the internet. They're swords just like any other sword. They aren't meant to cut through metal armor, they are meant to cut through unarmored targets. I honestly get tired of all the Katana worshipping.

So maybe the knight is better protected by his armour, but also is hindered by it in his movement and situational awareness, a problem a light armoured viking doesn't have. And the viking is probably used to fight straight up, with the simple goal to defeat his foe just by himself, while a Samurai may also be schooled in tactics and practical psychology. There are several factors by which you win a fight, not just your equipment. :D

    On the topic of spinning and flourishes, I recently re-watched Shanghai Knights (I know, I know) and was wondering what your thoughts on the final fight scene were, with the duel between Jackie Chan and Littlefinger (fucking Littlefinger is in it, I completely forgot!) Apparently, since Jackie's stunt team were used, the sword fighting was primarily more Eastern than Western, but since I'm an expert in neither, I can't say. I can say that it looked great from an entertainment perspective, though.
    I also wonder if flourishes and twirls and spins could be used psychologically in a duel. I mean, realistically and practically, it would most likely be far too risky to even attempt it, and when the goal is survival you would want to minimize all risks, but could it be used as a psychological weapon in the right hands, against the right enemy, in the right situation?

    • @smexijebus
      @smexijebus 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Oh, yeah, absolutely. I didn't mean to imply that Chinese techniques weren't about efficiency of the kill, or anything like that, it was merely a comment about the people fighting and the style, more than the realism of it.
      And I completely understand the need to make things flashier to entertain (and I'm so glad they do) and realize that it virtually no one would ever fight like that in real life, however, I still can't help but wonder if anyone's ever used those overly flashy flourishes in actual combat. It wouldn't work against an extremely skilled opponent, or someone who could keep their cool in the heat of battle, but surely there were people who were cocky enough to try.

    • @MadnerKami
      @MadnerKami 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Smexi Jebus Technically, you most certainly could do that, but why waste the time to begin with? The longer you are in the fight, the higher your chances are that your opponent gets a strike in that you didn't anticipate, getting you hurt or even killed.

    • @smexijebus
      @smexijebus 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      MadnerKami I realize this, and realize that no normal person would ever want to extend the time of the battle, but that's why I added the 'cocky' caveat. Let's face it, there's been some absolutely insane warriors in history, and the ones we know about are usually just the ones who were insane _and_ accomplished great feats. I just can't help but wonder if anyone's successfully and consistently implemented the use of fancy and unnecessary flourishes in combat. That's all.

    • @smexijebus
      @smexijebus 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** I do the same c:
      And yeah, I'm just curious as well. I have absolutely no illusion that utilizing it in actual combat is far more likely to get you killed than anything else, and that there are far more efficient and safer methods to psychologically intimidate or distract your enemy, but I find the idea quite interesting.

    @Limon-cq5zu 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    One of your complaints about the game is spinning, but that can be answered easily, in the game most of spins were heavy attacks, they were designed to be slow and sometimes predictable, that's why in the Alpha or Beta test you could see people punishing heavy attacks (usually spins) with a fast weak attack, so yeah, spinning is an option in the game that is taken at it's own risk. About the armor, yeah it's unrealistic, but how would a Samurai even be competent in battle against a knight? Because Im sure Knights win in the weapon and armor aspect, so If it was realistic, then picking Samurai would straight up be a debuff For the player. Finally, I also recognize Vikings in the game aren't like in real life, but Ubisoft isn't aiming For the Skallagrim community because they probably don't even you're a community, they're aiming to the public in general, so they put some fantasy inside to catch the attention of the general public.

    Surely if you're wearing plate armour (or indeed any kind of armour that offers resistance to cuts/thrusts) the risk of spinning is pretty negligible? I don't imagine it's easy to identify a gap in somebody's armour in the time it takes them to complete a spin. In that case, why not spin? Imagine the force you could impart with a spinning murder stroke.

    • @Skallagrim
      @Skallagrim  8 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      Quite the opposite actually... Many suits of plate armor are open on the back of the legs, and sometimes arms.

      There are plenty of reasons not to spin (losing sight of the opponent, over-commitment to an attack, poor footwork, etc).

      Spinning is mostly pointless, although the one possible way I could see it being practical is in a 1v1, and in a situation where absolutely positively HAVE to hit this person with all possible force...

      I bet round house kicks are 100% useless too... People dont expect it. The first MMA match I went to I watch a kid knock this guy out with a spinning backhanded strike. It created so much force that you could hear the crack though he audience. He dropped like a sack of potatoes. The time it takes to react to a move you are not trained to react to is far greater than the standard moves. The thing we always say is, the news guys always pull off some of the crazy shit, purely because they dont know how you fight yet, as Ironic as that statement is.

    • @akatsukami9578
      @akatsukami9578 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      On the contrary; by the early 15th century Western European armor covered most of the body and the gaps got smaller for a century or so. Look up "Italian white armor", "German Gothic armor", or "Maximilian armor".

    • @shadowstorm114
      @shadowstorm114 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      that was if your family had the money to buy it though, also some preferred not to always use that armor due to the amount of difficulty it required to take them off alone having armor protecting vital parts of your body could at times be far more practical

    • @FalconWindblader
      @FalconWindblader 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That depends on the century you'd be talking about. i'm not so good when it comes to remembering numbers, but i think what you're talking about happen around their earlier periods when plate armor started to become available to most. in later centuries, right before guns become widespread enough for heavy armor to be pointless, plate armors're fairly common.

    • @guiv5412
      @guiv5412 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I know this comment is very old, but nope; weight was absolutely not a problem. There are tons of videos on youtube showing that it was very easy to move around with feudal plate and it wasn't that heavy. Especially because most knights would have trained in armor since a very young age, so they would have the strenght to do it. Plus, if you talking about expense you could say the same about vikings and samurais. Most families wouldn't have money to buy chainmail or a good helmet for their warriors and the same goes with Samurais.

      Most likely you're going to hurt yourself with a cheap sword. Get a training one and bash random shit with that. Trust me cheap shit can break and easily cut you and if you don't have training you are 90% likely to hit yourself at least once when you get over excited. Swing a training/sparring sword or a stick around and bash shit while you save up for a real sword. Blunt swords can still cut flesh with a swing so be careful.

    Realism (not just historical accuracy in particular) often has to be sacrificed for the sake of game balance. Vikings usually only had a helmet and some padding. Maybe a mail coat. Samurai wore a coat of plates, which is better. Renaissance knights wore the iconic plate armor, which provides the most complete protection of the three. Additionally, Renaissance European swords were designed with tips that made them effective at getting around armor. Early European swords and Japanese swords of any time period really weren't.
    If one of the three classes has both the best armor and the weapons most effective at penetrating armor, then no one would play the other two. For game balance, if one class has the best armor, they would also need the lowest offense. (If I were designing it, I'd make Vikings damage-dealers, knights tanks, and samurai a hybrid between the two, but that's just my opinion.)

    • @NoahWeisbrod
      @NoahWeisbrod 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This game starts with a premise that limits it. If combat in the game were more realistic, the game would be completely broken, because a knight's kit is just objectively better for this kind of fight than a samurai's or Viking's.
      Now, if a game were all just one kind of fighter, then you wouldn't need to sacrifice realism for game balance.
      HOWEVER, your reflexes in real life are much better than your reflexes while watching a character and moving via controller. If all game animations were as sudden and quick as real attacks, then almost no players would ever be able to react to anything. In Dark Souls attacks are unrealistically telegraphed so players don't feel cheated when they get one-shot. In real life, there sometimes are scenarios where you have no options, but those scenarios make games too frustrating to be worth playing.
      With the limitations of technology today, I still doubt that a fully realistic fighting game would actually be fun. (Now, if we ever get SAO-like virtual reality...)

      Killaflavour I thought that at first but I think the Spartans fit better with the "Honor" part of the game. The Romans didn't exactly fit that as well as the Greeks did and they're fighting style isn't too different either.

      I think they should do a classic soldier pack.. roman legionnaire as the sword class, Hoplite as the spear class, Khopesh swordsman as an assasin class and maybe a Celtic/Gallic Cheiftain as the heavy class.

    Finally someone who's actually willing to stand against the weeaboos who think samurai were the deadliest motherfuckers around. Martial talent aside, more iron meant more Armour. Katanas are cool but it doesn't take too long a look to see how ineffective they would be against plate.

      Samurai's knew the weak point in an armor. i did kendo for years and we trained to attack those weaker points like the wrists, inner elbow, sides from the body, inside from the knee, throat...

      A katana wasn't a weapon to fight in a war. For a war you do have polearms.

    Just a guess here, but in one of the trailers it says that the three races have been at war for a thousand years. A lot can happen in a thousand years, maybe and I'm only saying maybe when the Samurai first fought the Knights, they probably came a crossed this problem, the fact that they're swords can't cut through plated steel. The Samurai could have made they're swords far more durable and sharper. That or they strike weaker parts of the armor. Did I mention this is a guess and a HUGE maybe, I'm going of of game logic here.

      Not necessarily. You are correct that a game does not need to be realistic, but some do strive to achieve it e.g. Metro 2033/Last Light, S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Red Orchestra, Chivalry, ARMA, etc. I believe that many people expected For Honor to try the same.

      They clearly ARE trying to make it as realistic as posible. seeing how they are using historical armors and weapons and not something like Dragonscale armor wich would be very hard to make since there is no dragons to get scales out of. Sure you could arque that there is vikings with horns but mehh.. thats not as big of a deal as FEMALE SAMURAI, there has been some(pls correct me if i am wrong) called Onna bushi or something but they did not wear batle armor and used naginatas.

    • @TheAdronio
      @TheAdronio 8 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      They aren't trying to make this game as realistic as possible, see katanas cutting through plate armor. And again, the rights of females aren't even a question of realism. Sure, if this were Japan, France and Norway, even though Norway was a christian country that didn't actually raid at the time there was plate armor, yes it would be unrealistic. This isn't Japan, France and Norway however, so it doesn't matter.

      Impaleification Joan of Arc was hardly a knight. She never fought, and her only injury was an arrow to the shoulder. She literally just kept in the back and inspired the men to charge forward. Feudal Japan was incredibly patriarchal. Female samurai were not a thing. Japan takes a lot after china, which similarly restrict their women to the house. Women in some rare instances did hold the distinction of either "Dame" or "onge-buisha" is what I think it is called in Japan, but this was for the most part for court purposes, such as the wife of a knight etc.

    Katana not being able to cut through plate armour? Like what the hell are you even talking about? A single good hit of a katana can slice a rock (which a friend of mine has seen live), let alone stab or slice through plate armour...

    • @MrSamulai
      @MrSamulai 8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I can assure you that no man-made sword can "slice" through rock, because that would imply that some cutting was involved. More likely (and only possible) scenario was that rock was hit with enough force to shatter it from the middle, which isn't impressive at all, you could accomplish that with blunt steel bar.
      Steel plate, however, isn't nearly as hard as rock, which means it will not shatter no matter how hard it's hit. And since swordblade is more fragile than plate armor, it will break before you get in even a good dent.
      And tell your friend to stop hitting rocks with swords, that's just all kinds of dumb.

    • @Yazuroshi
      @Yazuroshi 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh christ, you cant slice a rock, even if you took the most superior steel we have to day such as CPM S110V, or CPM S90V or ELMAX...its not possible mate. And for the record, Japanese steel back in the days where shitty, and thats why the Japanese had to go to such extent to purify it. The end result was still not impressive compared to steels in other places at the same time, not to mention compared to today. But im sure ninjas can fly and all that shit...!

    you could say that the telegraphing from last week bit was when he was trying to smash him down and break him before he died, thinking he had already won, in battle it would make sense for someone to be angry enough at an opponent that he forgets technique.

  • @TheLiamis
    @TheLiamis 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    an interesting thing I notice with armour is it's about to go full circle. before guns the best armour was a non rigid layer (chain) reinforced with a rigid layer (plate). modern armour is currently a soft layer (Kevlar) backed by a rigid layer (steel or ceramic) and it may soon go to full body similar to knights had.

  • @sternis1

    As for spins in martial arts, this is mostly useful when fighting several enemies (as you would have to turn your back some of the enemies) or when are trying to deceive the opponent. There is a staff technique in Joachim Meyers Art of Combat, where you turn your back to your opponent, waiting for them to rush in with a thrust, then you spin around, parry their thrust and strike them through the head (as is tradition). Meyer actually comments that it will only work once for an opponent, and that it is risky.

  • @duckbit9657
    @duckbit9657 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    About that shield technique. They have made it in game exactly like you described it. One of the classes makes the shield a part of his one handed weapon, which is nice to see.

  • @Kaiimei

    Well, there are also a few bits of game balance and hype-training, which then perfectly explain why the Katana cut through the Plate Armour.
