      @@patrickmartin2236 It's a pretty long border so I can't say for sure. But I take a free bus ride (payd by Sweden I believe) for a few hours that travels to a specific grocery store. So many people do it that they still earn money from it.
      Basically as far as my situation goes, it's only food items and they're either tax free, or they're even cheaper than I thought that even with tax they half of what norwegian prices are.

      I just tested myself on my samurai armor with a katana.
      It's equal to what I've seen with mails or light plates, it scrapes and buckles it. But doesn't penetrate through the armor.
      So I'd say it's equal and it's all up to the fighters experience, skills and hearts.

    Such a great video. Man I was kicking myself for not addressing the food stuff, frozen wasteland and Viking weapons comments, my video would have been too long, but you’ve addressed those perfectly, better than I could have. I would add that the Kite Shield can also have a center-grip as we see on the bayeux tapestry and other sources, one of the reasons why I love that shield so much ^_^ but this isn’t to detract from the versatility of the great round shields popular among the vikings.
    I LOVED that you addressed the samurai bows and archery in general. Thanks again for the superb work mate!

    • @Skallagrim
      @Skallagrim  7 ปีที่แล้ว +400

      Right, I haven't handled a centergrip kite shield so far, although I'd imagine it's probably not unlike a Celtic shield.

    • @shadiversity
      @shadiversity 7 ปีที่แล้ว +237

      +Skallagrim There's a lot of similarities but one difference is that because the grip can be significantly off-center on the vertical plane to the center-of-balance (due to the extended point) the kite shield naturally falls to a vertical position with a decent amount of insistence. I've found this to be beneficial for a number of reasons but I happily admit I'm total a kite shield fanboy ^_^

    • @gasperzuber129
      @gasperzuber129 7 ปีที่แล้ว +59

      Shadiversity The kite shield shares similarities with the roman shield, wich was used in a similar way. But the kite shield was designed to be used on horseback wich is it's main advantage, but not so much as an offensive tool. :) And btw you, Skall and Metatron should do a colab video on this trying to pick a winner, each arguing for their own side. A good day to both of you from a big fan of you both :)

    • @shadiversity
      @shadiversity 7 ปีที่แล้ว +100

      +Gašper Žuber I've actually had a really interesting conversation with Matt Easton regarding the kite shield being a specialised cavalry shield, something of which we both disagree with, instead we conclude that the Kite Shield is far more effective on foot though it most certainly is still very effective on horseback. (just search kite shield on both our channels and you'll find our videos, one of mine is a direct response video to matt).

    • @gasperzuber129
      @gasperzuber129 7 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Shadiversity I have watched both videos before no worries ;) I just disagree the the extended bottom part gets in the ways. My personal opinion is that it was designed this way so it coverd up your leg on the left flank of the horse, wich is always really vounurable. On the right side you make your ofensive moves with your lance, while the left is safe due to the long shield. It's up to the horseman to maneuer the horse so he is always protected. But again opinions do vary and I see your point :)

      @Rafael Lopez Sorry for interfearing your discussion. True fact shields died out faster than plate armor. And there have been plate armor that could even stop rifle bullets at some point in history. Think Henry VIII did own such armor tho it was expensive as !(%¤ and a few selected did own such armor. Anyways plate armor is good no discussion BUT you aren't godlike cuz of it. in history a clothed wearing pesant could beat a full plate protected knight in a 1v1 situation if he had the right gear. Full armor makes you a bit slower depending on if it is heavier or light. in some cases the knight could barley feel he had armor on cuz they was well fitted to the individual ofc. but still a person with no armor should still be a bit faster and smoother in the movements. Then the wepon of choice. A longer 2H wepon is ofc good cuz of the reach no doubt. but all kind of wepons like armor have weakness of some sort. I myself do fight and i am training with round shield 1H axe and 1H spear. In the traing we have done with all sorts of wepons i have bested 2H wepons of most types cuz of the shield. and for the plate sure won't bleed to death if he get hit by let's say an axe but he still get "crush" injuries cuz im hitting the plate. the plate absorbs the impact but to a price. that is why warhammers came a while after plate came to basicly crush the man inside the historical "Bulldozer" armor then they added spikes to puch through pretty easy.

    Wrong. Vikings were steroid ridden, brutish psychopaths hardened by the cold North. Their axes (they didn't use other weapons) were rudimentary because everyone was too busy working out and punching trees down for boats so there was no time for smithing. No one had chainmail because all vikings were forced to eat the iron due to lack of fertile lands and the fact all animals were frozen, this is what made Vikings so tough. All of this doesn't matter though because Samurai are Japanese just like anime, so they're obviously superior.

      He's getting to be increasingly wrong on a large amount of things though. It is really not that difficult, I don't think, to gain a passable knowledge of a topic in a relatively short time. Accounts from Arab Travelers and Historians at the time (which are incredibly easy to find summaries of) would point out that they were very accomplished traders, and had distinct population centers, and tended to care more about cleaniness than most Europeans in the same time frame. He's just getting really sloppy.

    Something that has not been mentioned much in those debunking videos is the thing that both vikings and knights where used to fight different cultures. specially the vikings. as they did travel over almost the whole known world.
    So they where used to adapt depending on what they was facing and had experience of facing several types of warriors with different equiptment, tactics and so on.
    While Samurais did pretty much only fight warriors from same culture as themself. They did basically only fight other japanese wariors. besides the mongolian invasions they never really fought anyothign else than other japanese warriors.
    This fact would give both knights and vikings an advantage.

      That's an odd thing about the setting in For Honor anyway... Supposedly there has been war for a long time, so you'd think the different factions maybe adapt their equipment to be more effective against their opponents? I'd expect the Vikings to scavenge some plate armor, maybe find out where the knights get their large quantities of quality iron ore from and raid their supply, and even try to capture armorers.

    • @reddokkfheg9443
      @reddokkfheg9443 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      True. and that rases another question. if thse 3 factions has been fighting each other for a long time why havent the equiptment changed more. If knights and samurais had been fighting each other historically i am sure that both knight armor and weapon would have evolved in another way, same with Samurai armor and weapons.
      But i was more thinking from a historical point of view as he did claim to look at this from a historical and realistic point of view :)

Usually TH-cam captions, especially autogenerated ones, have some inaccuracies where I'm doing double duty to try figuring out what was actually said. (Being hard of hearing, I also use captions when having the sound on too.) And when the captions are good, that's nice. But you, whoever captioned this, went above and beyond to even add in notes about his tone of voice and other things that made it like I was reading a professional transcript. So good job. It's a variation of an old technique that seems to have appeared after the fall of Rome where one unscrews the pommel of the weapon and uses it as a projectile in order to hit the killing blow. It seems to have been very effective in duels, but it became less prevalent on the battlefield as unscrewing the pommel severely reduces the effectiveness of any weapon. It was also a difficult skill to master, so in later periods the pommel would not have the ability to be thrown, because their commanders feared that less experienced men might throw their pommels prematurely, which would severely diminish their forces.

    I love Japanese history and such. I study them more than any of the other subjects discussed in the video. Specifically the wars leading up to the start of the meji era/the fall of the samurai. One of the most drastic cultural shifts in history. I love the history of the Japanese and the samurai more than I do western history. I just find it more interesting.
    they're easily one of my favorite subjects, however. anybody that studies them should know damn well they would lose were it to come to full scale war between the three. inferior metals, very very very light armor.
    but game theory said samurai win because they have arrows.
    fucking.
    arrows.
    because plate armor and shields don't exist, and better equipped European knights didn't have arrows as well or anything right?
    As far as I know, he has yet to correct himself. so in my book he doesn't give a damn about misinforming thousands of people that don't take the time to educate themselves and eat up whatever he says like hot cakes. You would not believe how many of my friends that watch him have tried debating that the samurai were undoubtedly the best of the three and would easily win in a conflict.
    it makes me cringe so hard because I actually study the guys. But now a pool of ignorance seems to have just spilled everywhere, simply because of game theory's ONE video.
    Thanks for informing the masses and educating others, love your videos.

I like the japanese, i really do, but when it comes to warfare, the japanese have never in history been able to really stay on par with the rest of the world, they are starting to get it nowadays, but even up into WWII, their equipment was vastly inferior, the thing that made them a recognizable threat, was the fact they fight like crazy berserkers, if you do look even at how one fights with a katana, it may look elegant, but its more agressive and brutalist, focusing and trying to end your opponent on the first strike

      Definitely. It takes from historical techniques and elements, sure, but at the end of the day it's still a fantasy game that shouldn't be taken as historically accurate. That being said, I'm glad they kept some elements of historical martial arts instead of the typical flailing around of Holywood films and stuff since stuff like Halfswording does look really cool and unique.

    One point that MatPat tried to make was that knights and samurai used horses, giving them tremendous advantage over the vikings... however, if we are assuming that the knights/samurai can use their horses, why not assume that the vikings can use their boats/ships? A common stereotypical viking tactic would be to raid towns near the coast, taking them by surprise. Horses can't do much to chase boats/ships... Anyway, great video.

      They are made after the fantasy of what we suppose them as. Like knights, they are sort of armored, but not tin canned, and their helmets have all sorts of very odd ornaments, and they swords are insanely huge. This is made after the concept of what a knight was, whilst pushing the idea of what a knight was over the top, to make it more apparent that you are in fact playing a knight. And Vikings did armor up yes. but were known to fight half naked, and or without torso armor-Clothing simply, to intimidate or show off scars, tattoo's and other things. Blood would also be more apparent on their skin, making them even more terrifying.

    • @Skallagrim
      @Skallagrim  7 ปีที่แล้ว +241

      Thanks! It would definitely be interesting to find out more about the yumi. I was also wondering about the technique that I've seen in modern kyudo. No idea how traditional it is, but I find it odd that they would start in a position where they hold the bow in front of their chest with outstretched arms and then draw from there. Mechanically that's a really ineffective position to start the draw, since it forces you to draw with just the arms first instead of engaging the stronger back muscles immediately. Again, I don't know if they did that in historical times, but it seems to be that this technique limits the maximum feasible draw weight a lot.

    • @UnknownSquid
      @UnknownSquid 7 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Weirdly when I heard that line, I instead started imagining some remote clan of shepherds, famous for their warhorse sized sheep. Wool so thick it cannot be penetrated by arrow nor sword, and curled horns that can crush an armoured knight during a ram. The peasant farmer shepherds being physically imposing giants for having to work with such gigantic livestock every day. Their weapons may still be pitch forks and dismantled sheep sheers split into halves, but they'd fearlessly take on a knight any day to defend their flock and the pastures of their homeland.
      And I've not even mentioned the sheep dogs yet...
