I would take those huge blocks with the blue and white string quilt and just put together what you have done and either donate to charity if you don't care for it, or make it a general use quilt for around the house. The Farmer's Wife blocks are amazing! I would make a goal of making 5 per month all year (picking your favorites each month from what is left) and then at the end of the year, set them together, no matter how many you have, and be finished!
Thanks so much for the suggestions! I am working away on the farmer’s wife quilt now and have done 6 more blocks so far! The string ones I haven’t done anything with though so thanks for the suggestion!
I suggest you make blankets/floor quilts for your local animal shelter/s with any of the blocks or partially completed projects you decide you don’t want to finish but can’t throw away. The shelters will appreciate them and as they’re fabric, they’ll be able to launder them. You won’t have to worry if any of the fabrics and blocks match as the animals won’t care, they’ll just know they’re being kept warm and not laying on a concrete floor.
The quilt blocks your son sewed are precious. Just add a couple of borders to make a throw, but a large one he can use until he's grown. And add a label on the back with his name, age and date so he'll always remember. I'm sold on the way Karen at Just Get It Done Quilts makes "after-quilts", using up scrap to make the quilt backing. In your orphan blocks, the quilt top you have is needing to have applique'd flowers, leaves and vines in the white rows between the blocks! That would make it fabulous! I do not like to use single material quilt backing. I always make a quilt reversible. Hi! Thanks! Yes I’ve decided to spend some more time on the Farmer’s Wife Quilt! I’ve done two more blocks so far! Good luck with your binding! And thanks for watching!
I had lot orphan six inch blocks all different sash with black fabric came out great the black brought the blocks out I had lot of compliments on the quilt Love to see farmers wife done
I'd love to have the patterns you have foe all the small blocks you showed, they were so amazing the different blocks and the beautiful colors you picked . It would have been great if you had had a little girl. To help you with your unfinished projects.
The one you started last January is BEAUTIFUL!!! Maybe use the brightest pink at the boarder or back and or scrap piece. So that every color is on the boarder or back! It’s really beautiful.
I love how you dig deep and pull it all out and consider it all and share. If they were mine I might be inclined to try and combine those quilted practice pieces with the QAYG sections. Those sew along or bee blocks would make a super cute cot quilt and you could use that quilt top you have as the back. I too am in the mind set now to pull it out, combine as see if things just will fit together. I have some Appliqué blocks made with Kaffe I never finished all and am not in love with how they set them. I am pondering now how to just use what's made, add settings to and make a top and be done. Sometimes you have to just do it or give it up and let someone else use it.
What beautiful foundation blocks! It should be finished! love the colours Maybe you don’t need a hundred. Smaller and done is better than not bigger and not done
I like your low volume one. I said the same thing in the beginning, “I’m gonna finish everything I start.” But not being happy with the results, boarders, color combos, backing not right, etc… Makes it hard to go forward with those projects. I try not to beat myself up about it but like you go forward and get thur one at a time being completely and that feels good . PS I loved living in Scotland.
I use the leftover blocks as part of the backing for the quilt and the leftover frabric from the project. My backing is done in horizontal or vertical strips. Very little scraps left over.
I think the one log cabiny one could make a very cool jacket! Love the blues and whites. I am definitely hoping you’ll finish the Farmer’s Wife quilt, I just got those books and want to start one of my own. Thanks so much for sharing all your bits and pieces - makes me less panicky about my own UFOs 😊😊
Ooh I didn’t think of clothing options! Hmmm…I’ll have a think. Farmer’s wife quilt definitely top of my list now! Glad I could make you feel better about your ufos 😂!
I finished the Farmer's Wife in civil war fabric. Absolutely enjoyed (hand-piecing) every block...my skills increased so much from that one project. I'd recommend finishing that one!
@@helenfields2318 oh my goodness- hand piecing! Wow! You are a quilting rock star! I am planning to work more on that quilt but definitely by machine and I’m doing it FPP too - so much easier than what you did I’m sure. Well done you!!
I would love to see the farmer's wife quilt be put together also I really liked your low-volume quilt I love the low volume look. You have so many orphan blocks and you spent so much time on them I was thinking lay them out and make a quilt back out of them. The last bin you showed us of the hexie's you were talking about a whole cloth quilt and I was thinking perhaps you could iron iron on interfacing and then and then put them on a whole cloth and then do quilting on top that makes sense to you. You've got some very pretty quilt blocks that need to be taken out and showed some love. I really enjoyed your video
Thanks! Ok Farmer’s wife quilt definitely moving to the front of the line! And yes that was kind of what I meant with the patchwork blocks and the whole cloth except I might appliqué them on before I quilt….not sure yet! They definitely need to be used though! Thanks for all the suggestions! Appreciate it!
Fun to see all of your WIPs and UFOs. I loved your son’s quilt. I think it would be big enough to finish and he would be able to use it now. Thank you for sharing .The paper pieced blocks you bought would be beautiful appliquéd onto individual large square of fabric with a dashing between blocks. You could use it as a wallhanging, table mat, or even decorating the top of a sofa.
Thanks so much for the suggestions! I need to just keep mentioning the quilt to my son I think and try to get him excited about it again - he was at one point!
The first one with the paper piecing would make a beautiful wall hanging with some black sashing to make those bright colors pop. Mabey you could combine the 2 blueish quilts to creat one. I notice I love my quilt wall hangings more than blankets now cause I can enjoy them all the time. I even have a queen size hanging in my livingroom.
@@ScrapFabricLove I needed it for soundproofing cause my neighbor was a nut case. I couldn't even talk without him banging on the wall. Then I got used to seeing it and decided I really loved it.
FPF is fussy and sometimes you just want to do some rogue sewing. How about making a commitment to do two or three a week. I agree with the strings being home use items. Finish in between a bigger project. Make the “log cabin” into a quilt. It’s very dramatic and it will look gorgeous when done. I also find I start wanting to make smaller projects out of things I’m just tired of looking at. All of the different size blocks would be really adorable as a quilt. The different size blocks draw the eye to each individual block. I love the squares that you’re not in love with but I wonder if you would consider using black fabric as a background so the colors pop. If you don’t have enough blocks make a bed runner or table top. You could turn smaller unfinished things into pouches or totes. I love all of your projects!!!
It was a lot of fun going thru all those WIP's and UFO's with you. Late last year I did the same thing and now have everything listed. Now to cull the list of the projects I'll never pick up again! Great vlog! Thank you.
Thanks! Doing the video has prompted me to do a few more blocks so we’ll see if I get back into it regularly…if not, you are right I just need to put them in a quilt!
I have just started my first full FPP quilt so would love to see you finish that project. Maybe one block a week? I think you could take the blue strips from your QAYG project and use them with the log cabin project. I would cut up the log cabin into blocks and then use the strips to make more. And if you buy some minky for the back of your son’s quilt it might entice him to finish. Good luck with them all!
Hi Kristen, Watching your channel, I feel like I’m sitting with a friend and chatting about a common interest. I really loved all the blocks that you made from the Farmer’s Wife book and the color combos. I would love to see you chip away at that if you still have interest. Love that your son started his own quilt and I’m sure he will cherish it once he finishes, he just doesn’t know that yet.😁 Thanks for the chat, see you next time.
Aw thank you so much! That means a lot! And yes making the video has re-inspired me to continue with the farmer’s wife quilt. I made another block last night!
Oooooo your sips are beautiful! Those hexis caught my eye. But that would take too long. You have so many blocks, you are so close on some of these. Lots of happy stitchin, have fun with it whatever you decide!
Hi there. Enjoying the video! What stood out to me was the block on your lap at around 19 minutes in with the red stripe on it... I think that would be great cut into strips for another quilt.
During lockdown friends & family gave me their old jeans some with rips or signs of wear & tear, too big or too small. Anyway I cut them into strips and then sewn them together cut them across the strips to give me squares and I was hopping to make a buggy liner for my grand daughter, I bought some beautiful pink and white lace to edge it with, I’m stuck because i’ve never sewn a button hole, I’m scared to try because I don’t want to ruin it. I need to practice. But I looked at this quite big piece of material and thought it would make a beautiful bag. But seeing you pieces made me think, bags, table mats, dolls clothes or dolls quilt sets you could probably sell them.
I have a video I made last week about making a stroller quilt - I attached mine using Velcro straps - no buttonholes! Maybe that would work for your denim buggy liner?
The first with the 26 blocks: I would do as much as necessary for a square or rectangle, and sahing and borders until it reaches an useful quilt size. That is what I do with blocks. Hexies: I made flowers and appliqued them on squares and added leave blocks. Yes, finish your son's quilt to a nice usable quilt, it is so happy and bright.
The Farm Girl quilt- is that Lori Holt? Love to see someone other than myself with so many WIPS. LOL it's awesome your baby has shown an interest in quilting.
The Farmer’s Wife Sampler Quilt (there are two versions I’m doing 1930s) is from a book by Laurie Aaron Hird. She compiled blocks from a some sort of old time newspaper supplement (or something of that nature can’t remember!). Anyway you can get the books on Amazon and lots of other places!
Hi Kristen, I would like to see the Farmer‘s Wife Quilt going on. The blocks you showed were so beautiful, I like the modern approaching of those old fashioned blocks. And of course the quilt of your son has to be finished soon. I am jealous! My son just turned 29 and until now he hasn’t shown any interest in my hobby. Those hexies do not reach my interest. I tried them years ago aswell but didn‘t enjoy making them. The low-volume-work looks very nice, I look forward to seeing it going on. All the best wishes to you and your family and a Happy New Year. Berit (Cassuviel)
I love the prompt ones ( started with colorful " rain drops ") would love to see that finished. The blue ones ; I like the idea of using first one for smaller projects ,2nd could join first after cutting down or trim & join . I have " currently " ( always changes ) 4 quilts to be quilted already in sandwiches, 3 QAYG projects in progress , and about 6 WIP, and maybe 8 ufo's
Glad I’m not the only one with so many projects! Unfortunately in my haste to get a UFO finished I butchered those prompt blocks 😱! You can see how I ruined them in my ‘worst quilt ever’ video… we live and learn!
If you're still taking comments on this, I LOVE a design challenge + zero waste! Some ideas: I fully agree with your commitment to doing color-driven projects. I'm entirely the same. And like some others here, am aesthetically most drawn to the low-volume crumbs. I think pairing that as a background 'canvas' on which to place the gorgeous OPP's (27:02) would be amazingly striking for each: the organized modern chaos of the crumbs coupled with the super tidy, old-fashioned hexis - YUM. Similarly, I think the B+W hexi one would go better with other B+W orphan blocks to be integrated in a different setting, rather than trying to force disparate color schemes together, based on their construction type or block shape. The orphaned X-blocks would work as backing for the low-vol project - they have a similar color principles for me. In terms of the scrappy denim fragments: cut down into c. 7" squares, they would make a great scrappy, latticed border - e.g. around the rainbow quilt. Then lastly, I think a bunch of your more saturated orphan blocks could be integrated into the Famer's Wife project: they're around the same size and visual density. 😊 P.S. Thanks for bringing some chilled out energy to TH-cam !
Thanks so much for all of these suggestions! Some of these blocks and half finished things have been used now but not all. I’m hoping to finish the low volume one by the autumn maybe…we’ll see…I keep getting distracted 😂! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Pat Sloan posted a video where she used her orphan blocks. She cut the blocks up, using them in a new block. They looked great. Ok think it was posted today, 1/13.
I really love the Farmers Wife journal quilt stories. However, I would love to see how you use your scrappy quilt pieces. It appears to me you have just had a great time trying lots of things, whicjh honestly is what I do, also. This was fun to see, I'll look forward to seeing your finished choices.
I really would like to see the paper piecing blocks finished in a quilt!!! I'd also like to know where to find the Farmers wife quilt block book you used foe the paper piecing blocks. Maybe it would help with have the author to the book, thank You, Nanette
Sorry it’s Laurie Arron Hird - I will put a link in the video description when I get a a chance - I should have done it initially! Thanks for the reminder! I have the 1930s version - there are a few!
Just found your channel and loving your style. I have a couple of UFOs. I get them out every now and then, put them on a working wall but eventually I get sick of seeing them and have no clue what to do with them so I put them back! I think it's mainly because of fabric choice! I just can't throw them! Wouldn't it be great to have a UFO project swap?
Just come across your video have been struggling with my UFO and PHD so I choose one and it's finished, can't be happier! With the others I swapped two with a fellow quilter on social media...it gave me something new to start and finish....so a few months on how have you done? I would be happy to take one and finish it for you...
Hi! I’ve made good progress on some of them. My son finished his UFO! And actually someone else did take one of mine already the large white with scrappy blocks one. I am hoping to finish my low volume quilt in the next month or so 🤞🏻
Oh boy oh boy ,do I have ufos , I will take them out once in a while and then put them back and start something new .Most of my ufos are ufos because I did something wrong or lose interest.I did recently ask my two daughter in laws to pick what they like ,and they did , so Im proud to say Im finishing one of them . I do have a vid showing my ufos ,its the last video I recorded ,My channel is for the most part mix media but I recently got back into quilting ,my true passion . I love all your ufos and am sure you will get to them one by one . TFS
You could continue sewing together all the scrap orphans that you don't like and make dog quilts to donate to an animal shelter or vet. You could back them with old blankets and I'm sure they would be very grateful. It seems such a waste to bin the fabric. They could also be good for homeless shelters!
Oh I definitely would never bin anything! Since this video I have made a few ‘cat quilts’ for my local cat rescue with some of the blocks and I also made a huge orphan block quilt for my husband with some of them too.
I was gifted some truly hideous fabric…that was actually painful to even look at…and of course the person who gifted it was really excited to see what I made with their expensive (but revolting) fabric choices. So, I decided to make an “ugly” quilt (not letting them know that was the premise) and made a picnic quilt out of it. It used all the gifted fabric and now when we go to family events there is a comfortable quilt I 100% don’t mind putting on the ground or having children eat on…
😂Brilliant! People’s taste levels are hard sometimes aren’t they? Just watch out they might think you liked that fabric so much they’ll get you some more!! 🤣
Oh, THAT'S why people buy kits. I've got a few misfires, but you have a lot that are really far along. You are more ambitious and exploratory than I am. Brave quilters have more marginal projects. Not everything needs to be 'finished.' Any artist studio will have lots of canvases stacked face to the wall. It's all process, not all product.
Life's too short and your time is too valuable to spend it with things you don't like. I decided several years ago to have an honest talk with myself and decided to get rid of things I didn't want to spend anymore time or money on and sent some bags to good will and the really awful stuff went into the trash. Since I'm older and slower now I don't collect many UFOs and those I do I put together into small wall hangings (I don't need another totebag). Sometimes you have to be brutal.
You are thinking too big for a lot of your pieces. I kept thinking, just square up and make pillows or "After Quilts". Watch Karen Brown @ Just Get IT Done Quilts. She has some great ideas. You kept saying "I really didn't like/love". For those things if you don't want to finish them maybe put them up on Etsy or take them to your Guild, someone will like the colors and you can sell/give/swap. Hope that helps a little.
Thanks! Yes I’ve seen Karen Brown’s after quilts but some of this stuff I don’t like enough even for that 😂. I’ve made a few since into mini cat quilts for my local shelter. I know my own cats like sitting on quilts so figured they would too! And cats don’t mind so much what it looks like 🤣. But you are right I do think too big sometimes and end up spending time on things I don’t enjoy- trying to stop that!!
I know this is an older video but perhaps a suggestion for the future….. you purchase other people’s WIP’s so why don’t you sell some of yours so that other people can use them? You may be sick of seeing them but to someone else they may be amazing. I buy other people’s scraps and sometimes there are bits of blocks or something someone has abandoned because maybe they didn’t like it. I honour them and put them in random and messy quilts. There is one particular quilt as you go hexagon abandoned project that I purchased and I can tell the person got frustrated and doesn’t hand stitch but it was chucked into another bundle I bought. I plan to do some decorative hand stitching over the stitching that’s already been done and include it somehow in a quilt. I donate most of what I make to charity so I don’t have to love the end result but hopefully someone will. 😊
Thanks! Yes I have sold one WIP and given away another but I guess I still feel like I’ve started so recently that nothing is old enough that I’ve given up hope for it yet 😂. Definitely a good option for the future though!
How many WIPs & UFOs do you have? Do you have any good strategies for working through them?
I have to comment as I watch, ir I will forget...definitely do the low volume quilt. That is something I would like to do.

I love the one that is close to being done with all the white!!!
Thank you!
I had lot orphan six inch blocks all different sash with black fabric came out great the black brought the blocks out I had lot of compliments on the quilt
Love to see farmers wife done
Yes I’ve been mulling over an orphan block quilt…. I did another block of the farmer’s wife quilt earlier this week. Only another 72 blocks to go 😂!
I'd love to have the patterns you have foe all the small blocks you showed, they were so amazing the different blocks and the beautiful colors you picked . It would have been great if you had had a little girl. To help you with your unfinished projects.
Those are the Farmer’s Wife Quilt blocks - there is a link in the video description to where you can get the book with the patterns in it.
The one you started last January is BEAUTIFUL!!! Maybe use the brightest pink at the boarder or back and or scrap piece. So that every color is on the boarder or back! It’s really beautiful.
Thanks so much!
Yes I’m still considering some of these! It was a useful exercise and has at least got me restarted on a couple projects that I had left for too long!
Definitely finish the first project with sampler blocks!
Thanks- yes that is priority 1 for the UFOs!
I love the hexagon pieces. Please work on finishing them. Tablecloth maybe? Wall hanging? Bathroom decor or mat..?
Thanks! They are still on the list - I’ll get my thinking cap back on for those!
I’d love to see the farm girl quilt finished and orphan block quilt!
I just finished another block of the farmer’s wife quilt today! Doing that video has done the trick to get me re-inspired to move on with it.
What beautiful foundation blocks!
It should be finished! love the colours
Maybe you don’t need a hundred. Smaller and done is better than not bigger and not done
Thanks! Still working on it but you are right I don’t need to do them all!
Definitely work on the UFO #1...the Farm one. I have never had the desire even to think about doing it till I saw your scrappy blocks! I love them.
Thank you! Glad you liked it scrappy!
Thanks! So funny we all think the same when we start and then it all changes 😂!
I use my orphan blocks in my backings. It really helps with getting your scraps out.
Love it! Thank you.
I use the leftover blocks as part of the backing for the quilt and the leftover frabric from the project. My backing is done in horizontal or vertical strips. Very little scraps left over.
Fab! I love a scrappy quilt back!
Wow a queen sized hanging that sounds awesome! Not sure my husband would agree to that! I do want to do one for a landing on my stairwell soon though.
@@ScrapFabricLove I needed it for soundproofing cause my neighbor was a nut case. I couldn't even talk without him banging on the wall. Then I got used to seeing it and decided I really loved it.
Brilliant solution to the neighbor problem!
Thanks for all your suggestions! Fab! I have made a few more of the farmer’s wife blocks this week! I’ll post about it again soon!
It was a lot of fun going thru all those WIP's and UFO's with you. Late last year I did the same thing and now have everything listed. Now to cull the list of the projects I'll never pick up again! Great vlog! Thank you.
Thank you! Glad you liked it! It was a fun exercise.
Forget the 100 blocks. You've done a lot of work on the scrappy blocks. Figure out some sashing and borders....just finish it. 😊👍💕
Thanks! Doing the video has prompted me to do a few more blocks so we’ll see if I get back into it regularly…if not, you are right I just need to put them in a quilt!
Love watching you because l need to work on my UFOs also. So good to know l am not alone.
We are definitely not the only ones! I think there would be few quilters without at least a couple UFOs!
Thanks! I did think it was strange how similar those two blue WIPs were! I’ll have a think about whether they could go together.
Hi Kristen,
Watching your channel, I feel like I’m sitting with a friend and chatting about a common interest.
Thank you!!
Hi there. Enjoying the video! What stood out to me was the block on your lap at around 19 minutes in with the red stripe on it... I think that would be great cut into strips for another quilt.
Thanks- I’ll have to go back and watch and figure out which one you mean! Thanks for the suggestion!!
You should also finish the one thatbyou started last January. It would be wonderful once you quilted it.
Wish I could like that one - I’ll figure out how to use it somehow! Thanks so much for the feedback!
Thanks for all the suggestions! I made another farmer’s wife block last night! So I’m going to try to add to it. My son’s might be a longer project 😂!
Thanks so much for all your thoughts! I’m definitely going to put some more effort in to the farmer’s wife quilt. I’ll work on my son too😉😂
So many beautiful projects to finish. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks!!
I would love to see how you put the farmer’s wife blocks together.
Great! It is definitely top of the WIP list now!
I too had blocks like the 25 you showed. To finish that quilt I added solid blocks between what I had sewn. That got it done.
Good thinking!
I have never counted my UFOs and WIPS. I'm too afraid of the final number. Your Farmer's Wife quilt looks amazing.
😂 honestly I thought I would find more than I did! I made another farmer’s wife block earlier this week-only 72 more to go 😅
Love your orphan blocks and WIPs. Have you considered turning them into tote bags especially the X block
That’s a great idea. I’ve actually used quite a few of them in an orphan block quilt recently. It’s in my 12 Stashbuster projects video.
Pat Sloan posted a video where she used her orphan blocks. She cut the blocks up, using them in a new block. They looked great. Ok think it was posted today, 1/13.
Thanks I’ll have a look!
I really love the Farmers Wife journal quilt stories. However, I would love to see how you use your scrappy quilt pieces. It appears to me you have just had a great time trying lots of things, whicjh honestly is what I do, also. This was fun to see, I'll look forward to seeing your finished choices.
Yes I did a lot of experimenting! Thanks for your nice comments!
The Hexie ones you could turn into hot pads if you didn't want to make more cushions.
Good suggestion! Thanks!
Hi. With the QAYG, you could make a fabulous bag, if you don’t pick it up to finish the quilt. L xx
Yes I’m sure someone else’s UFOs would be more engaging!
I am hoping to finish my low volume quilt in the next month or so 🤞🏻
@@ScrapFabricLove great news, bit you feel a little better.x
Oh boy oh boy ,do I have ufos , I will take them out once in a while and then put them back and start something new .Most of my ufos are ufos because I did something wrong or lose interest.I did recently ask my two daughter in laws to pick what they like ,and they did , so Im proud to say Im finishing one of them . I do have a vid showing my ufos ,its the last video I recorded ,My channel is for the most part mix media but I recently got back into quilting ,my true passion . I love all your ufos and am sure you will get to them one by one . TFS
Good idea sharing your UFOs with others. I had a subscriber take one of mine! Good luck with your channel too!!
The farmer's wife... would love to see tutorial.
Yeah! That’s one I definitely want to work on!
That is a very generous way of putting it 😂! Thanks! Yes I am starting to learn not everything needs to be finished!
I have 2 WIP, and 1 UFO that I haven't really started yet.
That’s not too bad! I have tons!
Good philosophy! I laughed at the ‘I don’t need another tote bag’ 😂
I love PhD. Projects half done. I know that’s me
I’m with you!
Hi make bags or mates
Thanks!
