Alexander Medin meets Guruji Pattabhi Jois

Ashtanga Yoga teacher Alexander Medin shares fond memories of his first meetings with Guruji Shri K Pattabhi Jois in Mysore. In this video, he relates that in 1998 he had come to India to study Sanskrit, Indian religions, and yoga. In Mysore, he had to wait several months before he got access to the Shala and was allowed to practice.
Alexander got anxious and impatient but Sri Pattabi Jois could see that the student wasn’t ready and needed to work on his attitude first. Therefore he was twice sent away with the words, “Sorry, we are full.” Eventually when he was allowed in, Pattabhi ignored him completely and sent him away again for a while.
What Alexander surmised later was that Pattabhi was, in his own way, helping him change his mind-set. He later even allowed Alex to stay and practice for longer than he could afford.
Alexander recounts that he had the privilege of knowing Pattabhi until his demise in 2009 and his best experiences were the private conversations he had with him in his office, talking about life and various aspects of yoga philosophy.
Reading from the Bhagavad-Gita to him in the hospital and home was a particularly beautiful experience, says Alexander, who is grateful for the opportunity of being with the great teacher.
