I was impressed by the one anecdote about how he was portraying borat at a wine tasting and borat was gulping instead of sipping and eventually passed out from over drinking and the camera crew and production people were panicking thinking when he wakes up he’ll drop character. Yet he lurches back to life in full character as borat shouting “YES MORE WINE” with out missing a beat.
I agree, he is a genius. In Ali G he did a question to a "animals' lover", would you kill a chicken? No. And would you kill a chicken in order to safe other chicken? That question is more than comedy, is almost philosophical.
niels, Cohen is trying to get them to quantify what it is that is objectively valuable about the animal's life. Is it the chicken's character that makes him or her more valuable than an other? How do we grade a chicken's worth, if not by the kilo? What if the first chicken had the second chicken as a hostage, and was threatening to peck him to death? Would it be OK to kill the first chicken then? If you say 'yes', then you have to agree that a chicken's personality constitutes part of its value. If you say 'no', then it's just every chicken for itself, and I really don't think *absolute feudal chicken madness* is any way for farmyard animals to live. The humour comes from the juxtaposition between the idiotic character of Ali G, and the incredibly complex, philosophical nature of the answer to that question. Does that make sense? (I don't expect you to suddenly find it funny, but I hope you understand). Cheers.
@Ninja Squirrel Ali G basically went through a list of meat-based foods asking a vegan if he would eat them, the vegan increasingly getting more offended started saying things like "oh no not even if you paid me 1 million dollars" and then finally Ali g asks would you eat a chicken (presumably already dead) to save the life of another chicken. At this point the vegan had backed himself into his own made corner and had no idea what to reply

Above all I admire Sacha's incredible courage. Again and again he enters groups and even crowds of people who strongly oppose what his character is going to say and do. Revealing their prejudice and often invoking their anger. He never backs off, holds on to his outcome, always goes first and is a true leader. Sacha boldly goes where no one has gone before. Second, I admire his ability to always remain in character. Even for days in a row! Third, his wit and ability to improvise. Whatever happens, he responds in a funny way never missing a beat. Last but not least, I like his higher values like honesty and equality of people.
i loved borat. i despised bruno the first time i saw the movie. i didnt get it at all. i didnt realize that its a prank, and only key members of the cast and crew are in on it. once i realized that these reactions from people were real, i became a HUGE fan. ive watched every episode of ali g, seen all of his movies and appearances. i honestly liked his older material the best, the more recognizable he became, the less acheivable his comedy became.
Not anymore. Though I like the films he did with Adam McKay, Step Brothers sucked and pretty much every film he makes these days is despised by critics and forgotten by audiences. I mean, do you remember "The House"?
The ALI G show wasn't a prankshow, it was simply a talkshow where sacha didn't play as himself. That makes it so beautiful and authentic, if it were a prank show we would still see ALI G as the actor he gets played by.
Pure genius. Ali G was my childhood. Later on I only started to appreciate Borat and Bruno more. I thought the Grimsby Brothers was a funny film! Dictator of course good movie!
I saw once a video about a gypsie village in Romania which he introduced as his village in Kazakhstan in borat and when the inhabitants saw Borat they were furious and said "Borat lied to us!" which means that he played his character even behind the scenes. What a legend
Ali G is so eff funny, he is so quick to come up with this distorted question or conclusion from a very odd POV, almost like those questions kids do that let you questioning yourself.
Sasha Baron Cohen is still criminally underrated. I was also hoping you would include David Walliams and Matt Lucas as two other great British character actors. Love them!
I really want to do something like this, except my idea is to have some sort of mockumentary about an alien crash landing on Earth trying to find its "leader". It'll have our character going through every major superpower (except North Korea, for obvious reasons) to figure out who rules the world. That's all I got.
Borat blew my mind, that shit was hilarious. Also I'm a bit of a too honest person to my own good myself, so I know all about this sincerity problem ppl have
"Psuedo-Realism" is a great descriptive title! Eric Andre I guess falls more in the "prank" category but I definitely think that he is also pioneering in this new wave of comedy
Coming back to this after Borat 2, I’m seeing a lot of people bring up the character’s blatant hatred towards jews. Can’t truly comment on it, as I’m not jewish myself, but to me it seemed like he was always showing how ridiculous anti-Semitic people are. And to me thats such a great way to battle people who share those views. If you can’t have a logical debate with them, simply point and laugh at how dumb they look and sound. People have the full right to take offense to Borat’s views, but I’ve always seen it as something similar to Mel Brooks. Baron Cohen gets more flak for it simply because Borat is pseudo-realism, like you said. Theres a discussion to be had there, but most people would write it off as hate speech and go to bed happy. And that makes me sad.
Thank you! When I try to explain why Borat is actually deep and meaningful behind the comedy people just think I’m stupid because all they remember are the laughs. Not what Borat was trying to get across.
Sacha was probably influenced by Paul Kaye who had a TV show on BBC called "Dennis Pennis" long before Ali G, it was ground breaking at the time. Lots of similarities with Ali G like interviewing celebs and politicians in character without them having any clue what was really going on.

Borat at the Henley Regatta is the funniest, and at the bowls club. They're both on Borats Guide to Britain. 'Cmon de f#@king Bucks!!' (You'll cry with laughter at that bit, Sacha briefly breaks character at that bit as he's trying not to laugh)
@@dominicturner77 haha yeah thats great that whole thing. He actually nearly breaks character in that as well when the guys explaining to him how to use the urinals hahaha 😆. Tell you another pretty hilarious one but of Ali G and thats the Tree Protesting one. He drops the classic 'Is it cause I is black?'
SBC is very good at what he does but he did't invent the idea, in fact he is following in a long tradition here in the UK of mocking people who think they are important and he takes it to another level. Dennis Pennis was so obviously SBC's inspiration... taking to the red carpet as a British Journalist and mocking celebrities with cryptic questions. SBC's interview with the Beckhams is legendary.
There was also Rick Mercer's Talking to Americans. He's a very popular political comedian here in Canada. His talking to Americans show was in the 90s. (He'd basically go to the states and ask for American opinions on ridiculous bullshit he'd make up about Canada, to see if they'd believe it and act like they know what they're talking about. He even interviewed some politicians lol)
2 years later i know but this made me remember when dennis pennis stuck his mic in arnold schwarzenegger's face in a red carpet throng saying 'hey arnold, how does it feel to be one of the biggest names in hollywood?' then a.s. being caught on the hop and wondering if he needed to reply being trolled perfectly by getting 'yeah, 14 letters, how about that?' thrown at him, perfectly timed... boom!
Eric Andre has admitted that he takes what people like SBC do one step further on his show. So, SBC often does mock interviews, where Eric Andre does mockeries of mock interviews. Thats the whole point of his show, to mock the fake interview genre. Not to insult it in anyway, just because its as ridiculous as he possibly can. Like, SBC asks legitmate questions even if he is playing a really stupid character, that character would be stupid enough to asks those questions. , most of the questions Eric Andre asks his guests are pure nonsense His street sketches are straight out of SBC playbook
Sacha is a controversial comic, but he is absolutely hilarious because he goes all the way, and isn't afraid of the consequences. Plus his work is not just cheap shock humour, it is clever works of satire and parody. He is among the greatest comedians working today, and will be talked about for generations.
the most genius aspect of his comedy has to be how he manages to get people to think he is on their side, and so they start comfortably saying crazy things they wouldn't say in a normal interview
His interview style also owes much to Garry McDonald’s character Norman Gunston from the 70s. He was an Australian comedian who interviewed people in character, and the humor developed from the fact that the international guests didn’t know that this man, billed as Australia’s best interviewer was a bit of an idiot
pat nik Chris Morris was doing SBC before SBC and doing it better. Brass Eye is much better than Who Is America, although it does have moments of genius. I like Sacha but it reminds me of the Jeff Goldblum speech from Jurassic Park about 'Standing on the shoulders of geniuses'
Appreciate what sbc is doing but yea he was hardly the first, like you said Chris Morris was doing this as early as 1989 almost a decade before sbc came on scene...
pat nik Precisely and by the time Brass Eye came on the scene, he had it down to an art. Remember the one where he went to All Saints road in the late 90s asking dealers for fictional drugs? That was as ballsy as anything SBC did; people were killed there regularly.
In my experience funny people are actually pretty smart, they have to be pretty clever to come up with different jokes and sometimes they have to have some kind of knowledge in different types of subjects as well.
I did a little comedy acting (not well) on stage and we all rehearsed while trying to make each other crack up. These comments became the perfect 'ad Lib's' if the live audience were being cheeky. This kind of workshop is so obviously what SBC and his team do, so extremely little of his responses are genuine comic genius, they are the result of a lot if hard work.
Yoo iv always said this guy is a genius how he makes his interviews and films but my friend think it’s all set up so don’t understand the genius behind it all, also loving the 2pac picture me rolling instrumental in the background 🔥

i loved borat. i despised bruno the first time i saw the movie. i didnt get it at all. i didnt realize that its a prank, and only key members of the cast and crew are in on it. once i realized that these reactions from people were real, i became a HUGE fan. ive watched every episode of ali g, seen all of his movies and appearances. i honestly liked his older material the best, the more recognizable he became, the less acheivable his comedy became.
That's why he waited a long ass time before doing "This is America". Nobody saw it coming. New characters too so nobody could tell.
anton eckart This is why he retires his characters, because they become too recognizable.
Thats one of the reasons this new show sucks, the awful costumes, you can see is fake from a mile away.
Ohhh baby, youuuuu!
You got what iii neeeeed,
but you say he's just a friend,
oh you say he's just a friend!
his performance in The Spy was incredible
Yes!!!
fr
Totally!
He took the acting and comedy to the next level !!!
He is a Genius!!!
8:00 Bland Comedy = Will Ferrell .....Thank God someone said it. Dunno why he gets so much praise for his below mediocre jokes.
Not anymore. Though I like the films he did with Adam McKay, Step Brothers sucked and pretty much every film he makes these days is despised by critics and forgotten by audiences. I mean, do you remember "The House"?
his movies used to great
You dont watch a Ferrell film for a philosophical experience
Thank you nitpix, very cool.
Vertigo Gnome dude i was tryna go to sleep
3:23 .....YOUUUUU, YOU GOT WHAT I NEEEEEED, BUT YOU SAY HES JUST A FRIEND, BUT YOU SAY HES JUST A FRIEND OH BABY YOUUUUU
The ALI G show wasn't a prankshow, it was simply a talkshow where sacha didn't play as himself. That makes it so beautiful and authentic, if it were a prank show we would still see ALI G as the actor he gets played by.
Pretty sure Joji had inspiration from this character when creating Filthy Frank
Pure genius. Ali G was my childhood. Later on I only started to appreciate Borat and Bruno more. I thought the Grimsby Brothers was a funny film! Dictator of course good movie!
The song in the background is “just a friend” for anyone wondering
no its picture me rollin by 2pac
@@skittlesbutwithchocolatein2274 at 3:33 you can hear the melody of “just a friend”
LEGEND MATE!!!
I see who Brandon Rogers source his inspiration from
I saw once a video about a gypsie village in Romania which he introduced as his village in Kazakhstan in borat and when the inhabitants saw Borat they were furious and said "Borat lied to us!" which means that he played his character even behind the scenes.
That's a sick idea man
Daniela Elliott Two words, one film, The Interview. Look into north Korea's reaction to the film and you'll get your answer.
Shouldn't you post this on Kickstarter or Patreon and get funding instead?
That is actually a fantastic idea, though you would probably deal mostly with wackos, which might give the film an interesting quality all of its own.
I might be wrong, but I think that you need something more credible to mess with people's heads.
"Sacha Baron Cohen is a genius"- stating the obvious..
Borat blew my mind, that shit was hilarious. Also I'm a bit of a too honest person to my own good myself, so I know all about this sincerity problem ppl have
Oh my god do people hate you if you're too sincere and honest I'm like that too😳
"Psuedo-Realism" is a great descriptive title! Eric Andre I guess falls more in the "prank" category but I definitely think that he is also pioneering in this new wave of comedy
There is a chair... And the chair walk... With shoes... Lalalala... On the street... And the chair... Is a walking... Haahahaha!
until the jew come with a claw
Well, it's a very funny picture.
One man say to other man, hey ah mister, why your wife so sad.
The other man say, because my wife, she like a APPLES!
eShank great joke lol
eShank OMFG!!! I srsly tell this joke at least 1×/mo.!!! It's sooooooo awesome!!!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I've always thought that was obvious, but I guess everyone's overly sensitive nowadays.
Sasha is Jewish lol. Woke people rlly doing their research
1. Sasha is Jewish
2. He won an award from a Jewish organization for his work bringing a awareness to antisemitism aka borat
i am an Iranian living in Iran and not even i knew about this technique in our cinema
you have done a great job of explaining in this video
He is a genius! The world really needs more people like him.
Yes, he is! Great video
OPEN MIND Bidde? Du kennst Nitpix? Crazy
Gute videowahl mein großer :D
du bist echt überall
I think Brass Eye was the precursor to all of these shows
Neuroticmancer The Day Today n all.
I thought Ali G was first seen on the 11 o'clock show, and he got the Ali G show from the success of his work on the 11 o'clock show?
This is true as far as I know. He did Borat on the show as well. Also it was the first place I saw Ricky Ger ais.
Great show
Thanks for taking about Iranian cinema and directors. It is also pronounced “eeran” not I-ran.
His genius is how well he embodies a character AND brings out people's dark sides without script, albeit in a goofy way.
To bring up the Ali G Show and Alan Partridge without mentioning Chris Morris is an absolute scandal.
AAH HAAAAAAAA
I'm a simple man. I see a Nitpix video, I watch and enjoy it immensely every time.
Same with your black mirror series
NitPix grew up with Sacha Baron Cohen
The only thing that's put me off making a website is the fact that I can't watch Cupcake and Dino when I make it. Finally, with Squarespace, this has been made possible and I could not be more over the moon! I can now publish online my appreciation for Cupcake and Dino, I can talk about its animation, witty writing, heartbreaking moments and overall great production value. Never before has man been able to create a website showing their love for Cupcake and Dino whilst watching an episode of Cupcake and Dino. Truly, from the bottom of my heart, thank you Squarespace. And thank you NitPix, for without you I never would have stumbled across this magnificent service, I owe you my second born. Peace out bros.
Did you even watch the video you loser?
Very nice.
Feature History thanks feature history, very cool
I like
NOT
Borat at the Henley Regatta is the funniest, and at the bowls club. They're both on Borats Guide to Britain. 'Cmon de f#@king Bucks!!' (You'll cry with laughter at that bit, Sacha briefly breaks character at that bit as he's trying not to laugh)
I know the bowling club interview by heart! And when will Jack come?!
@@siy8230 I've seen everything he has ever done. I love when he nearly breaks character. 'And do you ever do a dirt in there?' No 'but why not!??'
I went to see Bruno with my family, it was both hilarious and excruciatingly awkward
2 years later i know but this made me remember when dennis pennis stuck his mic in arnold schwarzenegger's face in a red carpet throng saying 'hey arnold, how does it feel to be one of the biggest names in hollywood?' then a.s. being caught on the hop and wondering if he needed to reply being trolled perfectly by getting 'yeah, 14 letters, how about that?' thrown at him, perfectly timed... boom!
In short, Baron Cohen is better-off without a script.
💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯%👌👍
Would the Eric Andre show also be classified as a character comedy?
I was wondering the same but too scared to comment
Eric Andre,Steve Brule, etc.. are all characters.
Like, SBC asks legitmate questions even if he is playing a really stupid character, that character would be stupid enough to asks those questions. , most of the questions Eric Andre asks his guests are pure nonsense
His street sketches are straight out of SBC playbook
Sacha is a controversial comic, but he is absolutely hilarious because he goes all the way, and isn't afraid of the consequences. Plus his work is not just cheap shock humour, it is clever works of satire and parody. He is among the greatest comedians working today, and will be talked about for generations.
Sacha is a smart guy trying to expose our miseries, long life to that guy
0:40 I had to check Spotify to see if I was playing Thundercat's album lol
above all, your music choice is the real mvp of this vid
Oops! You forgot the role of Andy Kaufman in paving the way for this kind of comedy.
SBC is a genius.. not only in making controversial films but as an intervieuwer too.. sharp and edged.
Borat and Ali G are my favs
the most genius aspect of his comedy has to be how he manages to get people to think he is on their side, and so they start comfortably saying crazy things they wouldn't say in a normal interview
“Is it coz I’m black” do I need to say any more
His interview style also owes much to Garry McDonald’s character Norman Gunston from the 70s. He was an Australian comedian who interviewed people in character, and the humor developed from the fact that the international guests didn’t know that this man, billed as Australia’s best interviewer was a bit of an idiot
Have you even heard of Chris Morris?
reservoirfrog1 kind of thinking that myself tbh but didn't want to say out load
...
pat nik Chris Morris was doing SBC before SBC and doing it better.
I was just about to mention Chris Morris. He was doing this 20 years ago
In my experience funny people are actually pretty smart, they have to be pretty clever to come up with different jokes and sometimes they have to have some kind of knowledge in different types of subjects as well.
Borat, along with all of his other content, is a serious masterpiece
Sasha is going to be remembered as one of the greatest comedic innovators of our time.
Sacha Baron Cohen would be really good as D&D
Marc Alcatraz Yes, someone else says it. I'd totally play a game with him as the DM.
You are right, SBC acts on a higher level, I stand in awe.
Hi five very nice how mach?
Alex Gharibian niace*
yo u got a crib we can post our black asses for the night
3:22 you can hear 'just a friend' by biz markie in the background
Sacha did his comedic training at a clown school - this taught him everything.
As a non-Brit, I find it genuinely surprising that SBC hasn't been knighted yet. He's truly changed the world with his talents.
My wife is Iranian. The correct pronunciation is "Uh-ron". (I used to say "I-ran" too, as do/did most Americans.)
Dude come on 😂
Its eeraan
"Likeable, relateable characters" : shows Jack Dee and Jimmy Carr.
Yoo iv always said this guy is a genius how he makes his interviews and films but my friend think it’s all set up so don’t understand the genius behind it all, also loving the 2pac picture me rolling instrumental in the background 🔥
This take aged well
Are we not gonning to mention that above all of this Sacha Baron Cohen is also a BRILLIANT musical actor and singer?
I agree. The man has pushed the envelope way beyond the boundaries, in doing so he sheds light on just how fucked up the world is. It’s comforting to know people like him feel as you do towards American culture and other cultures abroad.
Dat Dre playing in the background tho
