To start, your second theory is the closer to being a scientific fact. But more on that in a minute. I highly suggest that, if you do a beard reboot like Greg, Jack, and myself, you shouldn't deviate from your beard routine. The differences is how much. You should still be using a beard wash to your preference, co-washing as soon as even week 1, and oil/balm from day one. Back to Greg's theory and my reason for suggesting the use of beard oil/balm from day one is simple. At complete shave, your skin produces enough oil to protect itself or keep itself moisturized (providing you're sticking to your old routine of beard wash 1-2 days a week or more if needed). By week 1-2, your hair is long enough that it's soaking up the oil that your skin produces and leaving nothing for the skin, hence the itchiness. Beard oil is really meant for the skin despite its namesake. Also, if you keep to your beard routine from day one, then your beard will be softer and not so coarse in the first few weeks of new growth. One last thing: GREG! Your bald patches are starting to not be so bald. Instead, now it's thin patches. I freaking love the randomness of how beard hair decides if and when it will grow.

You know what's great about these vids? Everyone was in love with Gregg's beard, because it was pretty much perfect. But shaving it off, you can see Gregg has allot of the "issues" we all have: the growth of the hairs that isn't dense, some patches and bald spots here and there, itching, etc. Goes to show you can have an amazing beard as long as you take good (daily) care of it and above all, have patience.

Well it’s comforting to see that a guy like you has a bit of a patchy beard in the beginning considering I’ve seen what you look like with a full one. The patchiness in the early stages has always stopped me from growing one because I was worried it would stay that way. I’m going to try growing one out for 3 months and see what it looks like at that point.

I am almost finishing my 2nd week with growing a beard for the first time. I have much bigger patches as it seems now, but will give time and see what happens. Itching is a problem (serious one), and the most effective solution for me was beard lotion. It is mint, it smells good, cools and soothes the skin and the effect last for a significant amount of time. The lotion gets absorbed more quickly and is not oily/greasy, so it does not cause any inconvenience for me when applying it.

I’m both a beard oil and beard Utility balm guy but not a beard styling balm guy. I use beard oil twice a day. After my morning shower while my beard is still damp after patting dry w/a towel I use beard brand beard oil (Spiced Citrus) then in early evening I’ll use beard brand Spiced Citrus Utility Balm for more skiing hydration on my face especially underneath my chin. The I’ll use the beard brand beard oil, you guessed it, spiced Citrus again before bed. I’ll with shower a second time which I use Beard brand utility bar in a like warm water, or I’ll rinse my face off fir 2-3 minutes w/the spray on the sink, oat dry and use the oil. For second time. This is my beard routine daily and I’ll wash beard every 3rd day a/beard brand shampoo and softener. Anyway so I’m both a oil and utility balm guy. If I could only use 1 I’d definitely use the beard oil. My beard feels so soft w/the oil so light and so natural. Using the utility balm my beard feel a little heavier but I do think it moisturizes my skin more and long than the oil. But I’d pick beard brand oil over everything but use both

I have a relatively springy/bushy beard with 2" hairs. I use oil every single day when I get out of the shower. Sometimes first thing in the morning when I don't plan on showering until later in the day and I still occasionally have beardruff issues. It comes and goes. It's definitely a product of dryness because it is almost always associated with itching. At this point I'm not sure if I need to try a different product (ie switching to balms instead of oil), a different brand, or change my washing habits (I wash every other day with grandpa's pine tar soap).

I started with the mustache six years ago and had a lot of itch, then went to the goatee five years ago and the itch was even worse but I wanted it so I dealt with it. My spotty four week beard though no itch at all, oddly. Never used any oil or balm until recently thanks to your channel. Wish I would have known about it years ago. Never used the balm so can't say anything about that yet.

I use oil for the first month or so of growth then I switch to oil + balm when I start getting some length. I always add the oil while my beard is still damp and warm from the shower, before any blow drying. Then, after it's dry, I'll add the balm for a little extra moisturizing and also for the little bit of hold the balm provides. I'm 3 months into growing my beard back out and am getting to the stage where things want to get a little wonky so it's nice to have that bit of control.

No itching never had that issue. Growing my bead back in. Used a heat brush and burnt a good 6 to 7 inches off my beard. It is on the mend. My lesson learned is to eat well and balanced and to use vitamin e and aloe and let the beard grow in naturally. No more mechanical adjustments. Natural is the best way. I wish I never used the heat brush. It was a nice beard then. It will be a nicer beard in about 12 months

I’m mixed race and my beard is quite spilt. On the cheeks and chin it grows pretty straight like most white men, and under my chin and along my jaw line it is quite curly and coarse like most beards in black men, and under the chin where it gets quite curled and maybe tangled is where I sometimes find it itches. Especially since where the hair curls it may rub against the curve down into my neck which also comes into contact with the area where I shave to line up my beard. I use both beard oil and balm as per the needs of my beard, the balm I use helps keep my beard soft and easy to groom and the oil keeps the roots moisturised and adds that nice sheen to it

A good tip...i use ecology soap which are so excellent to use in the face when you wash. It does not dry out the skin and are good for the hair too either beard or on the head. The itch are normal common problem for all men, because it is hair that start grows like jungle to get thicker. My beard is now two weeks since i did shaved last time. And the finally...yes you do fit better with a beard but not too long. I suggest short beard.

Here’s something that causes beard itching that nobody talks about: growing a beard after wet shaving with a razor! Instead, don’t shave for a couple days and then trim it down to stubble with a good pair of clippers (no guard) and grow from there-you will thank me!
Shaving with a razor creates a sharp edge to each facial hair which will irritate the skin-especially when your beard is short. Trimming with a clipper creates a blunt end to the hair and the itching is way less, and for me, it went away almost entirely with the addition of beard oil/butter/balm. Try it out next time you decide to grow a beard!

Each time I would go into lazy mode with not shaving then try to go into growing a full beard mode, the itching and bumps in my lower sideburn areas would drive me nuts to the point I'd shave, altho I even be afraid to do that with the bumps.
Funny thing about it is I didn't realize when washing my face that I was subconsciously avoiding my facial hairs til one of my friends said I should scrub the bumpy burns hard cuz he had same issue. That was all I needed to do, and when I started going hard in growing my beard, beard oils and balms were picked up early. I virtually never have itching anymore.

Thanks for all the tips they were extremely helpful, especially the itchiness of my beard that was caused because it was too dry. I use rosa musqueta oil, something used for healing wounds and it helped tremendously

Do you think having a white beard aids in making a thinner sparse beard look more full?

I used to get very dry skin under my beard, was almost like dandruff on my face, used exfoliating face wash and beard oil/conditioner daily and that stopped it

For me it is the sharp end of the hairs irritating my skin and causing it to itch. It's murder from 1wk to 3wks but after that out gets better and only minimal itch here and there

Yeah Greg great video yeah the itch goes away in about 90 days or so...so if you have any issues now, it should be going away soon. I had terrible itch and what I did is moisturize my face and it helped tremendously. Today is my beard is getting a little longer, I use a combination of beard oil and I also use beard balm. I use beard oil to hang around the house and right after I shower or wash my face and the balm when I'm going out for either business or pleasure. I wash my face often because nothing is worse than your girl telling you your beard stinks. Keep it going Greg, you're getting back to your old self it's good to see. Cheers!

When I was younger I'd get beard itch for the first few weeks after starting a new beard, but nowadays that's not an issue. When I was a kid I didn't use any beard oils or beard washes , I just used regular shampoo on it and that may have something to do with it.

Utility Balm! I think I have everything in the BeardBrand lineup EXCEPT oil... my beard type just needs more control, and I like the sheen with the mild hold that the balm provides. I combine it with the sea salt spray for hold and sheen. - Eric

Starting to grow my first beard at 38 years of age. Thank you guys for these videos! They are fun to watch and are very informative. I’m about 1 month in and am getting the itch. I don’t have the money to afford your products yet but I soon as I do I’m going to pick some up. I’m using something I believe is called Bronson brothers or BB which is designed for hair growth. It is sort of a balm. It is helping with the edge but I’m not sure if it’s helping or hurting my beard. Do you guys have any insight on this product or have you heard of it?

    • @Beardbrand
      @Beardbrand  5 ปีที่แล้ว

No insight on this product, however, as long as you're keeping your skin and hair healthy, hydrated, and keep a healthy lifestyle, you'll achieve the best environment for growth.

I'm growing my first beard ever at 62 years old. I'm at 16 days, starting to look like something. I shaved the neck a little high last week, for work, so I'm now letting the rest below catch up. It will probably even out in a few weeks? I wish I could attach a pic for your response. Thanks for the videos. It helps.

Not gonna lie: I think you're more of a short than a long beard guy. You looked alright with and without the beard, but this length you're rocking right now (maybe a bit more) is perfect for you
