    Revell snap kits are for beginners, however they make some very nice kits like the Venator Star Sestroyer which lights up beautifully. I wish people would stop giving Revell such a hard time as they DO in fact make great great non snap kits that build up fantastic. It's really all about your skills. Revell 's prices are very affordable as well. I'm 58 and Revell gets a hard time from builder about their older kits which they have been producing for decades. That said, they are beginning to re-tool many of those much older kits with the result being fabulous! Again, its all about your skills !!

    Haven't made any models since I was a kid (50 now) and wanted to get back into it. Big Star Wars fan and decided to make this model as it seemed to be an easy build. Thank you so much for this video! It really helped me in making this simple model look cool and I've already picked up the X-Wing to see what I can do with that. This video really inspired me!

    Looking back at this, there's so much that can be done to really make this kit shine.
    Killing rhe light and sound "feature" is number 1 😊
    I always thought that it looked a bit like an A-wing with a booster pack. A bit like the jedi fighter with the hyperspace booster ring. Or maybe a boost-to-orbit unit for a high-G planet.

    Tha k you so much! Just what I am looking for! It was great to see step by step in real time, and how relatively quickly you were able to transform it.
    The flat coat was a very good effect, and the first washof the whole model - for me a bit too dark/dirty in the end. But I appreciate the tips and showing how to chip and smudge.
    The simple wash on the interior was so quick and effective. And your quick painting of the pilots really helped. Thank you!

    Simply STUNNING work! I have this exact same kit and I will be using some of your techniques. I too found there were not many kits of this ship out there and I think it is a great design. The proportions and details look great for the price and the time I save on assembling it can be put towards weathering. Keep up the great work!

      the hasbro toy is very good if you want to turn it into a model think it works out to be 1/48 scale

    • @Experiment6Two6
      @Experiment6Two6 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nikolabakich9709 Yeah, it's pretty close to 1/48, with one caveat -- the wings are too short by about three inches. Also, the interior features are WAY out out scale, as usual, but that doesn't bother me nearly as much as I will make it in such a way as to de-emphasize the interior. I'm going to try building longer wings, or at least extending them with new center portions.

    Oh no, a consequence I had never thought of! here in Europe we all bitch about not being able to get Bandai Star Wars kits through normal channels because we have to suffer Revell's rubbish instead, but I never thought of course that means you guys down there who CAN get Bandai in regular stores can't get Revell stuff. D'oh! Much as I hate Revell, I may have to grab one of these just purely for a lack of alternatives. And besides, it looked fantastic once you had applied your usual talents to it. Sometimes the simplest techniques yield awesome results ^_^

    • @modelchili
      @modelchili  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

  • @khronokraze
    @khronokraze 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for this video. Nice job on the build and especially the weathering and detail painting.
    I like the Revel SW kits.. 2nd to the Bandai ones. The Bandai SW models are probably the best in details and accuracy and quality parts and fitment.
    The Revell ones are quite detailed, pre-painted in the major areas, and easy to build... and they generally fit together quite well, also. They aren't too expensive, either.
    This U-Wing is a nice scale.. what is it? 1/72?.. it might be a tiny bit smaller? 1/100?.. not quite as small as Bandai's U-Wing with TIE Striker and tanks model kit set which is 1/144.
    I think a surprise was that it has light up and sound fx. I'm not sure if I ever noticed anything that green inside the U-Wing from the movie, Rogue One, though?.. I think if you could swap out the light for a blue one, then it might match the look and glow that may have come off the side gunner's blaster/cannon fire.. or just a clear light since there really isn't any colorful glow emanating from the cockpit windows of the U-Wing that I've noticed from the movie.
    I understand the age group which it's probably targeted at, but maybe that's why I might forgive the obvious battery compartment door and large screw at the bottom.. and I assume there are no alternate parts that may cover up the peg holes on the underside where the landing struts attach if you did not want to use the landing struts to maintain an in-flight mode look instead.
    Could get creative and do some custom modification to clean those areas up, but overall, it's like a fancy miniature SW toy you can build up yourself.
    Going back to Bandai's version of the U-Wing.. Currently, it only is sold as a set with the TIE Striker and tanks. Pretty nice set, but I would hope maybe in the near future they will make individual kits of each of the vehicles in 1/72 scale.. I prefer it to the 1/144 which I find a bit on the smaller side than I'd like.
    I know they have the TIE Striker in 1/72 scale.. Hopefully, the U-Wing and the Tank..not even sure what that is called?.. I think it's just called the Imperial Combat Assault Tank.
    I would also like to see Bandai (or Revell) make the TIE Reaper that transported the Death Troopers as well as a TIE Bomber, long overdue.. which I'm surprised they don't have as they have just about all the other TIE variants from the movies so far.

    Loved the build and the final product looks great!
    Couple of questions though because I'm wondering about your process. To me certain parts were screaming for some metallic dry brush (engines, inside of cockpit, the electronics section) so I was wondering why you chose to do just a wash? Also, why not weather with the wings deployed? It looked like you missed some spots under the wings on the main fuselage and then the streaking is a bit odd.
    Just wondering since I'm currently trying to improve my own technique and I really enjoy your builds!

    • @modelchili
      @modelchili  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! It's just personal preference really. I'm displaying it with the wings retracted so any streaking caused while deployed would look a bit weird, and I don't remember seeing anything like that in the movie. As for metallic dry brushing you raise a good point, it's just not something I usually associate with Star Wars ships. It's entirely up to the modeller though!

    I use grey scale and earth tone pastel sets for weathering. I scrape the sticks with my hobby knife to make a fine dust and apply it with an old brush. I'm just wondering if the Tamiya Weathering Master sets are better for weathering. Sometimes it can be hard to get the pastels to "stick" to the kit and achieve the desired look. Is there something in the Tamiya ones to help them stick to the kit?

    • @modelchili
      @modelchili  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Tamiya Weathering Master pigments go down fine, but yeah they can be easily wiped away. A clear coat seals them in. :)

    • @Monsterist76
      @Monsterist76 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the reply. I'll give them a go. I'm guessing they are closer to makeup and have some oil or compound of some kind added so they adhere to the kit better. Powdered pastel is just dry dust, basically, hence the difficulty with getting it to adhere sometimes.

    Ah so your a kiwi!! I usually get these kits through TradeMe, don't like them as they're not a challenge and basic (hence lvl 1). Hoping Bandai would expand the range more....

    What scale is it, 1/72nd?

  • @AvengerII

    I'll be honest... I haven't seen a single new spaceship design that I've liked in these past two SW films. I liked at least one or two in the Prequels (the original delta-wing Jedi Starfighters; I didn't care for the TIE fighter-ish Jedi starfighters in Revenge of the Sith).
    They're relying a little bit too much on fan nerdgasms and fan service going to the extent of using unused designs from the original trilogy! The new X-Wings (T-70s) were just Ralph McQuarrie's unused design from the original Star Wars film... You could see it in a few of the conceptual paintings for the Death Star attack.
    The U-wing? I dunno... Yeah, there are real-life examples of multiple aircraft using the same basic engine but I thought it was stretching it a bit to make it like multi-use, alternate utility version of the X-wing...
    Again, your mileage may vary.

      Revell as this issue with non-standard scales much like Round2 which is parent to AMT, Polar Lights, etc. I think they do it just to annoy the modeling community that simply wants a set of subjects that are in scale with one another. Ban Dai's even entered into this for reasons I can't fathom with scales all over the place and even issued the A-Wing in 1/48th (or there abouts) yet calling it 1/72, which it is definitely not. To some it's perhaps a non-issue, but for me it makes me want to pull my hair out thinking about it.
