    There's a more affordable route into BMW i3 ownership and that's by buying a used one.
    It's been on sale since 2013 but time hasn't softened the i3's looks and cool style. And because it's been around for a while, there's plenty to choose from on the used market.
    But what should you look for when buying a car like this? Ginny takes an in-depth and detailed look at a typical 2018 second-hand model.
    Here's our full guide to used electric cars over on Electrifying.com:

    I own a second hand 94Ah BMW i3 and I am loving every bit of the car. Buy second hand, it’s the best deal for an i3

    Owner of a second hand 2017 i3rex. After 18 months of ownership, getting 4.5 miles per kWh. Summer range in ‘eco pro’ is around 140 miles on the electric plus another 80 on the Rex. Love the car and the review was spot on based on my experience. Only complaint is tires only good for 20K and slightly more expensive than standard tires here in the US. Look forward to more reviews from this channel and presenter.

    Had an old I3 Rex and did not want to separate from it. So I did a rare upgrade to the car, fitting the 42kw(120Ah) battery. Now it’s the best of all worlds and will get rid of my backup combustion car. In this new format, the I3 is just fabulous …

    As an i3 owner, I agree with the vast majority of this review. One correction though, the composite black material on the door cards and below the windscreen is not made from recycled plastic bottles, it is made from the knauf plant and a resin. The seats on the entry level interior are made from recycled plastic bottles.

      Isn’t resin a fancy word for plastic :)) ?

    • @anhiirr
      @anhiirr 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      thas like saying aluminum is a fancy word for metal...when repairing knowing which materials matter or a mixed material construction like a tesla or luxury car with aluminium. And you actualy have to make a lap joint/when sectioning these cars at times with 1 steel plate/panel lapped over aluminum or reveresed.....epoxy as a bond between the panels bc 2 different metals...and holes drilled....and pop riveted as a "weld"/joint.

    I have had my “Litl’ Blue” 2017 BMW i3 BEV 33Kw 94Ah since 01/25/2021. I bought it in showroom condition from an original owner with 24k on the odometer. I’m 75, drive it about 30-100 miles a month mostly to pick up online ordered groceries and to visit the VA clinic.
    I use a 240V, 16A (3.84Kw) Level 2 charger in my carport routed inside as an alternate device to my dryer outlet. I gain 13.5 miles per hour of charging up to 124 to 137 miles, and from home my electric cost is $0.031 per Mile which at an average gas price of $4.00 per gallon equates to 129 MPG.
    If there is a more perfect EV out there, I simply don’t want it. I don’t need more range, acceleration, styling, features, reliability, comfort, handling, or value. Litl’ Blue is obviously my Forever Car. Paid $16,500 but was offered $22,400 by Edmunds/CarMax 4 months ago which tickled my worn out ego. You may name yours too.🚙

    Love the i3, tremendous acceleration between 20 - 50mph, if I ever part with my 3.0 6 speed e85 z4, I'm definitely going electric, and a used i3 will definitely be on the potential purchase list, But atm I just can't do without top down motoring and a straight six lol. I recently got a Xiaomi scooter and just love the way you charge and ride without keep putting fuel in, can fully understand why alot more people are going electric.

    I've got a 2020 120AH i3 and absolutely love it. I don't mind the ride at all - just feels connected to the road like all BMWs should ! Plenty quick enough too.
    As long as it's not freezing outside, I can comfortably get 5 m/kWh on mixed roads. It's also fine for occasional long trips because it will sustain the 50kW charging rate up to 85%
    I also think its really well built - no rattles or squeaks in mine. The interior still looks 100% up to date.
    The only thing that can be annoying is those rear doors but they do have real benefits that go some way to offset the problems in tight parking spaces
    I can't see me getting rid of the i3 for a long time

Very spacious inside although some people will find the suicide doors annoying as well as rear windows not going down. Rex was never a great idea for those who truly want to switch to fully electric.

    As a 2019 120Ah (42kWh) i3 owner, I can report that this is a great car for couples, it's not perfect though. My biggest gripe is poor ride quality; the i3 really can crash and bang over U.K. B and C roads - yes even on 19 inch wheels. An extra down side of this is the appearance of annoying rattles from the interior, which gets shaken apart by the harsh ride. Having said all that, I love the car. It's my first EV, and I will not go back to ice by choice.

I think the camera and sunroof are the best options. No discernable range loss so far. No plans to get rid of it as it has very little in the way of wear on it. Only running costs so far (other than the super-cheap fuel) has been one service and one set of rear tyres.

      nicee! hi, Nick! I'm from the 🇺🇸 I about to purchase to an I3 just like yours. • @nixer65
      @nixer65 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@wbachd1 Hi wbachd1 - the 20”s are marginally harsher than the 19’s, but nowhere near the i3s ride. The i3 does suffer from some choppiness in the ride given the short wheelbase, but that is the same across the whole range. It’s not ever going to be a plush ride, but I find it very acceptable and comfortable and when compared to something like my new Polestar 2, well it is positively soft! As far as I understand the 2017 model year was the first with the 4G TCU so you should be OK if you get that (at least that is the case in the UK). If you’re looking at a 2016 then you might want to go for a later car - I use the app quite regularly for changing timers and remotely warming the car up and would miss that feature.

    I have 2016 66 plate 33kWh REX. Still pay £0 road tax as it was registered before 1st April 2017. That is when the regulations changed so that any CO2 emissions will cost you £130 a year and if the car was valued at over £40k new you can add a further £300 a year on top. Mine was £41k new but got used for £25k when 2 years old. Just love it. The REX is a real life saver if you can't find a charger or they are all in use. Recommend getting a 66 reg REX 33kw(94ah). I get around 100 miles range max out of one charge.

    I agree that buying a used i3 is the best value for your dollar if you're looking for a really, really nice around town car because of the incredibly steep depreciation of the i3. I'm not against the smaller range, but there's just no comparison when you talk about the range that you can expect to get at the $50k price point of other electric vehicles. I'm not sure how it's even viable at that price point - with all the options across price ranges it's not even on my radar as a NEW electric car and the depreciation is a confirmation of this, but it is viable as a used electric car at the

    Used BMW i3's are very cheap in North America. A quick search shows 2017 i3 REX models with less than 30K miles selling for $19K USD. When new, these were selling for over $50K USD. The skinny tires are somewhat difficult to find here.

      The tires are plentiful if ordered.
      A lot of due diligence is needed by the buyer of a used i3; the buyer should find out about the car's battery health, how often the battery was level 3 charged.
      Get maintenance records and check that all recalls were performed. Not all i3s have backup cameras, ACC autonomous driving, self parking or advance navigation. $15k about right for a fully loaded i3 from 2014 thru 2016.

      Mamadou Aziza perhaps in CA, but not true elsewhere. The Tesla Model 3, a far superior vehicle, in every respect just destroys it in sales. More range, performance, engineering , AWD etc than the i3. It's almost as if BMW isn't even trying.

      Why are u even comparing the two cars? Its like comparing a Nissan Versa to a C Class. The i3 is a city econo car meant to be driven on small city streets in Europe.
      The Tesla Model 3 is an entirely different vehicle altogether.
      The Model 3 comes in many different variants with different motors and battery sizes, the i3 is a simple EV. You need to do more search, the i3 is still selling in Europe, USA, Asia, India, Philippines etc.. Its a niche market car for a specific buyer in the premium segment and the only thing it has in common with the Tesla Model 3 is that both cars are electric..
      Try comparing the Renault Zoe or Chevy Bolt to the i3 instead because those are city economy EVs.

    The REX presents a useful choice for buyers. It provides a safety net, but adds purchase cost, running costs in terms of tax, complexity leading to higher maintenance & repair costs, & (from what I've read) reduced reliability, and weight with slightly reduced performance and efficiency. With good planning, the REX mostly wouldn't be need though nice to have on the rare occasions when it is needed. How rare is the question. Personally, I'd try hard to get at least a 33 Kwh version and not the REX.

Range has maybe dropped by 4 miles in 3 years, so still does 110-130 on a charge, plus rex (which has saved the day on a few occasions!). 4 miles /kwh is easily achievable. Zero problems so far. Better built than my tesla at any rate. Rear doors are daft, but never use them. Think of it as a 2 door and you won't mind so much!
