Hi Mika. Thank you a lot for the great content. I have a question about the Master at UWaterloo if you don't mind. Do you think studying part time for 3 years (1 course per term, 9 courses in total) would be a better choice than studying full time to get an official co-op with a chance to work in the US by Canadian's TN1 visa? A part time program means quitting the current 9-5 job. But a full time program definitely means quitting or negotiating with the current job for flexible working hours over day and evening while having a risk of being declined.
Thanks for the video. What was your math major? And if it was not CS BMath, was there any problem to get into software engineering from non CS math major? And did you need to work extra to learn those programming or just non CS math was enough for you to be selected for your role as software engineer?
Hi, Fantastic Vid. Just a quick Question : Can a Waterloo Student who is in Coop apply outside of the 50 Application available at WaterlooWorks. ( Cold Email, Referral …. etc.)
Hey Amaan, yup any jobs you apply to outside of WaterlooWorks is separate from the 50 application count. One thing you need to be careful when applying externally though, is that if you get matched with a job via WaterlooWorks, you have to take that job other wise you are subject to a penalty (i.e. Banned from waterlooworks for 1 term or permanently) So you may be in a sticky situation if you have a job lined up externally AND you have a job matched through waterlooworks so just be mindful of that!
Hii, loved your video! I'm planning on attending the uni in fall 2021. Would you say that Chemical Engineering has good coop opportunities? And can you please tell me something about the competitiveness of ChemE?
What would be the average wage for co-op for students in Masters program? I have been offered admission into the master of Data Science and AI program, and I'd really like to know more about the co-op opportunities for that program.
I'm not too sure what the wage ranges are like for Master programs. It'd probably be worth it to contact admissions to ask as they may have stats for that!
Hey Congratulations on your admit. Iam too interested in that program which iam gonna apply this September for fall 2022. Can you guide me in the admission process?
Yea honestly I would not say life sciences or any sciences outside of engineering has a ton of co-op jobs available through Waterlooworks. That being said, your major does not restrict you from applying to other co-op jobs.
@@MikaKim Well thats a relief, if taking coop meant that i wouldnt have the ability to actually get a job but still pay for that priviledge, especially as an international student, its really kind of scary . That being said, would you say its harder to get into coops that dont necessarily go with my major or do i get a fighting chance if i choose my programs wisely ?
Unfortunately the reality is if your major doesn't match the job you are going for, especially with no relevant background it will be much more tough to land a corresponding co-op role. But as mentioned that doesn't mean the system constrains you from applying to these roles.
hey !! i am an international student ...will it be possible for me to clear my tuition fee only through the co-op program ..like the fee for cs for international students is like a huge amount ... so please tell that whether it will be possible or not? Is the co-op salary for every work term mentioned for the whole work term (like 4 months) or its for a day like the students r paid in canada for there work for an hour ? YOUR VIDEOS ARE REALLY HELPFUL THANKS FOR ALL THE GOOD WORK !!! KEEP GOING :)
No, even if you make top earnings, you’ll never be able to pay all the tuition with ur co-op income. Maybe you can pay a bit or pay for dorms, meals, and etc. Hope this helps!
The intro had me thinking I was on 3x speed
wow... I can't believe interns make that much tech is actually crazy 😭
haha yea it's pretty wild! definitely an awesome industry to be in today :)
Thanks Mika. This was really informative.

Is the mechanism for master co-op same with undergrad? Does grad & undergrad students compete in the same co-op job pool?
Hey did you find out about this? And do we need to be a Canadian citizen to get coop work in companies in US?
Such a great sharing. Thanks

How does the SYDE program compare to the Program you took, in terms of coop?
I’m not sure about co op but the average SYDE grad makes around $130k annually.
I studied accounting, computer science and business at my high shool? Will i be able to study mathematics at the university?
As long as you didn’t hate it and think you are interested in it you should be fine :)
Is it possible not to be picked for any internship at all?
Thank you. Very good information, but you might consider to lower the background music a bit.
