Kobolds are one of those races that tend to be maligned by perceptions about the few that are actually bossed around and forced to do things by something bigger and nastier than them that they listen to only because of survival of the group. Such as Kobolds forced to work for the more intelligent Drakes or enslaved by Chromatic dragons in some way as a couple of examples.
The reality is that if they were actually met more in their preferred homes and left alone they should have most often be listed more as lawful Neutral in nature. But those ones aren't actually the ones that Adventurer's usually meet because they are underground and like remote places.

Imagine a kobold becomes an adventurer. He's out in search of a new homeland for his tribe after their mines collapsed, and now their warriors battle against the local militia in an epic fight for the tribe's survival. However, he cannot make the journey alone. He knows he is small and fragile. If he hopes to return home alive and guide his tribe to their new home, he will need help. He travels from tavern to tavern, in search of a decent party, but finding himself feeling alienated and small in the sea of giants. He can feel his skin crawl from every interaction, his eyes constantly darting around in search of an exit, his heart pounding, and every fiber of his body screaming at him to return home to his tribe, but he can't. Not yet. Just when he thinks he'll have to brave the journey alone, he finds a suitable adventuring party who plan on traveling to a grand mountain inhabited by a great and noble dragon. This mountain is well-isolated - far from any village or kingdom - and has enough space for ten of his tribes. The dragon who rules it is constantly searching for new treasures to adorn his hoard and would welcome any kobolds who came to serve him. Finally, his people will have a home once more.
The party makes plans to set out the following morning and meet at the town's front gate. He prepares his pack, sharpens his pickaxe, and readies himself for the journey ahead. It will be long and arduous, but just as he and his tribe cut through the heart of the earth, so too will he venture across the unknown. The sun rises on the following day, the early morning air chilling him to the bone, but he is not deterred. He spots his party by the gate, but there is a new face among them. It's a gnome.
The fighter turns to him and says, "This is our newest member. She'll be traveling with us to the mountain."
    And the kobold just screams.

Depends on how you approach them. They are generally lawful evil by default. Most players I’ve found don’t seem to understand what that really means. They have their own rules they live by. Generally if left be they will return the favor. If the tribe is threatened....... plus most DMs really don’t seem to understand just how threatening the environment or lair can be. I.E. paladin chases scout, paladin falls through weak floor, lands on spikes and dies.

I've got a small shop in one of the main cities In my campaign where the players buy their diamonds and gems, its run by a group of five Kobolds who use the gold to buy tools and building materials for their tribe, my players have not worked this out as the kobolds have a sorcerer with them to use *disguise self.*
My players refuse to go anywhere else as *"This shop never runs out of the materials we need for our spells".*
I've actually got the tribes mine layout finished, it's full of strange but deadly traps that can take out a lv9 character, due to the fact that this tribe is well funded from their city shop.
If my players ever go there and try to attack the tribe, they could potentially die from traps and weapons that they in part helped fund.

I know in 3.5 they actually touched up on this by having "trader" kobolds who work with the tribe while being enough of an outcast that they can at least tolerate other races (gnomes being the exclusion). I actually had an idea for a Copper Dragonwrought Unseen Seer or Arcane Trickster who would literally rob folks and blame it on local thieves because he ran the local pawn shop so... thief steals a nobles jewels, they end up at his shop and while he doesn't give the jewels to his tribe, he does send them gold because if he is "forced" to hand back the loot, he offers to build for them a home security system in traditional kobold fashion: elaborately and efficient. He charges extra for gnomes.

"Are you sure?" They all said yes because from their previous experiences from fighting Kobolds outside their lairs, They this was going to be easy. Mind you they had no rogue. I even brought a NPC rogue whom warned them that such a task was very dangerous and it was for their best to hire him for his services but they turned him down.
Only 1 from a party of 6 survived to come back without the mission full filled. Since then the group never chose enter a Kobold Lair. Having wisened up how deadly it is to enter with all the traps and ambushes Kobolds love to deploy. Outside their lair they are easy. Inside very deadly.

Note for making a kobold warren:
Entrances should be 'Tiny' size category. They can squeeze in. Medium and larger creatures simply can't.
Instantly knock out half the players unless they blow HIGH level magic forcing an entry.
Entrance should be long, squeeze, and covered in murderholes, preferably on all sides. Kobolds will attack at advantage, standing in their secret tunnels through the walls.
Invading creatures, no matter their size, will be at disadvantage. Either squeezing, or unseen enemy.
If the invaders make it past the entry, the goal is to split them.
Split them by size again. Just in case entry was forced by a Medium or Larger creature.
Kobolds can then flood the entrance. Separate the invaders into those that can breathe underwater, and those that are dead.
Still got invaders? Begin evacuation of the hatchery out a secret exit. Protect the eggs at all costs. Kobolds deemed better with people will take the front lines. Cower. Beg. Manipulate. Lie. Do whatever it takes to slow the invaders, and if possible, get next to them for that sweet pack tactics.
No need for stupid complicated traps more sophisticated than a kobold should be able to make, (Like tucker's kobolds, which are STUPIDLY over-equiped and possess traps that even the most powerful mage would have trouble assembling.)
For kobold traps: If it can't be made with a pickaxe and maybe a plank of wood, it's too complicated.

I ran a game a few years back where the group played Kobold scouts tasked with finding a new mine for their recently expanded tribe. The players had an absolute blast, tended to play it LN for the most part and even managed to set up reasonably friendly relations with both a Human town and a Dwarven trading outpost near the spot they eventually chose to settle. This was done by spending time and effort stabilising the region (which was on the edge of 'civilised' lands), they dealt with Goblin raiders who had been harrassing the Humans, they helped the Dwarves recover from a cave-in saving several lives and even joined a Pelorite hunt for a skeletal dragon (which they saw as an afront to dragonkind). The one and only time they went 'evil' in any real way was the Gnome trading caravan they came across which was stalked and harried for 2 sessions straight before the group slaughtered the entire caravan in a midnight raid.
I was so proud of my players in that campaign, they totally embraced the idea of Kobolds and stayed wonderfully within character throughout. Ever since that game my group have treated Kobolds differently, oftentimes looking for peaceful and non-confrontive means to deal with Kobold-related issues in their games. Without a doubt they would be my number one most misunderstood race in the game.

I play a winged kobold that invicibly believes he is really a dragon that just forgot how to polymorph back. He heard a rumor once that eating a dragon's heart can cause a kobold to turn into a true dragon. So that is his goal. He has been ostracized by his tribe and become quite the little pirate criminal mastermind in The Shackles (Pathfinder 1e) and has his personal longship crewed by other kobolds.

They work to build up a dragons hoard, and the newborns will take on the coloring of the Dragon they serve. So red Kobolds may be raiders trying to steal your stuff, but gold Kobolds may be helpers and guides. Silver Kobolds may open up a brewery. They basically align their morals to their master. All Kobolds tribes seek wealth, not for themselves, but to grow the dragons hoard. That's just my personal lore for them

No, you don’t understand the reason why the kobolds are successful at mining. Individually they are garbage at digging and hauling, their only benefits are a cultural proclivity towards mining and sheer numbers, they actually aren’t very good at it. Put a team of kobolds up against a team of dwarves of the same number and the dwarves will wipe the floor with them every time if the kobolds don’t die from exhaustion or accident first; dwarves are better at recognizing when a cave in is likely, better at digging, better at hauling and they can do all of it longer and faster.

Also, imagine a moment that a city of dwarves managed to make friendly with a warren of kobolds. Benefitting the dwarves would then benefit the warren, another dwarves would work to keep their kobolds happy for the stupid profit theyd make and cause they know how terrifying an angry kobold can be.

In my campaign homebrew, I had a group of 3 Kobold's go to a guild hall and place a commission on the job board for some group to clear a cave in the nearby hills. The party went and cleared out a werebear and his coven for them so they could rescue their friends that were trapped in the deeper part of the cave. They ended up opening a shop in town where my party buys gems. The commission had a big stamp on it that said "No Gnomes". Cool dudes. I have fun writing and playing their NPC characters.

That is why in recent years the Allignment labels have been largely dumped, especially as skilled homebrewers become more prominent and less stigmatized. Cause even a race with the most vile inclination can go good with the right experience and stimuli. Just take Paathernax as an example, admittedly from a different game and world. The dragons of Skyrim are without question Lawful Evil, and are enforced by their nature to follow that allignment. Yet Paathernax of his own volition and thought process went Lawful Good. And by all accounts kicked all sorts of butt in the ensuing war.
IRL allignments can switch fairly easily or through determined effort, yet in D&D that isn't a thing with the chart. Or at worst, they can swap but for major penalties which aren't a thing in real examples of Aligment shifts. I would argue for the sake of curses the chart should be kept around, but only as a suggestion, which is how they treat it nowadays anyway.

@@clayxros576 Fully agree. Well said. In the homebrew campaign I am running for my buddies they encountered a wererat in the sewers under the capitol city. His name was Rikor and he actually controlled the rats in the city sewers to keep the undead at bay. There was a big necromancer war 200 years prior that tainted the land. Anyhow the king never questioned why the constant undead problem never came through the sewers as for over 200 years there was never a problem. The backstory I wrote for Rikor was that he was actually a shadowbane inquisitior from long long ago that got bit by a lycanthrope caused to be a wererat. The old king banished him from the city due to prejudice, but due to the oath he swore to protect the people, he continued his work under the city and maintained a neutral good alignment. Played the campaign for 2 years and finally wound down to the last battle of mortals vs the lich and necromancer army's. Each of my pc's were commanding a battalion. They were rolling like crap and it wasn't going well. Then who comes charging into the marsh with a legion of large rats and rat swarms. Boom Rikor in his old white armor with righteous fervor, shadow steps into the frey to go after the litch. We are wrapping it up next week to see how it concludes. Sometimes bending the alignment rules with a decent back story is a lot more fun.

Oddly enough, Kobolds love to eat rats, and Human cities have a massive rat problem. The Kobolds happily live in human sewers, eating rats and whatever other food gets flushed, and see humans as their only ally in the world. Both see this as a temporary situation, but neither knows when this agreement will end. For now, Kobolds are quite happy living in human sewers, eating whatever they can find down there, and getting paid to maintain the place in exchange for old ham bones and rotten meat, and the occasional corpse the assassins guild flushes down.

The broken holy sword was a genuine holy sword that every paladin dreamed about getting but in its current broken form doesn't do anything other than radiate a very strong Lawful Good aura. The DMs in those games usually went along with me and gave me a wide degree of freedom because I help them rein in those players who just pick paladin for the amazing combat powers and basically ignore their obligation to their faith.

    I love kobolds.
The end to one of the campaigns I was in had my character change permanently into a dragon using 9th level magic. They looked and had the characteristics of a bronze dragon, but they were blue in color and settled a mountain on the coast. They used their shapechange ability to turn into a kobold, then rounded up some kobolds to mate with and started their own unique type of blue kobolds that eventually became self sustaining.
By the time the next campaign in that setting started, they had built a big city dedicated to trade and tourism. The kobolds just facilitated free trade, attracting merchants from all over, including thieves and pirates, and the kobolds were only there to keep the peace and collect taxes. The dragon made a fortune by taxing merchants and selling fresh water and salt as there weren't any other sources of fresh water all that nearby, many ships would stop just to stock back up on food and water.
The kobolds had their own district that extended underground into the mountain that had a shrine to the dragon, treasury, spa, magic academy, all sorts of facilities to make them better at their jobs. Excess kobolds are put into the Azure Legion which is basically a mercenary army. The general idea is rather than spending the resources to maintain a large army, they push that cost off onto whoever wants to pickup the burden to have a disposable fighting force of well trained little troopers. Dragon gets a cut of the wages, kobolds get food and purpose, countries get defended, works out for everyone.

I have been out of the D&D scene for several decades. In fact, the last game I played used 3.5 rules.
My question is this: Given a Master Druid in a large forest, and a Master Ranger who's built his Tower in the area as well... would they have common trade with any Kobolds in the area, should the valley be hedged with Mountains? Would there be a peaceful co-existence between them?
The Druid could direct bears to seek caves away from Kobold inhabited areas, and the Ranger could keep adventurers away from the Kobold claimed Mountain. Would the Kobolds aid them if the Druid and Ranger were threatened?
I envision a well forested valley, with good farmlands at the mouth of a river flowing through it from the mountains on either side. One set of peaks inhabited by Kobolds, the other by Dwarves, with the local Druid and Ranger's areas of control acting as a buffer between them.
Given the expected wealth generated by both neighbors, the Druid and Ranger could hire Magic Users to use Rock to Mud spells to create new Bear caves almost anywhere along the slopes of the mountains. Given the creating of enough such caves, bears would not need to 'invade' Kobold warrens or Dwarf cave complexes.
If good enough relations can be generated, then the Druid and Ranger can count upon Dwarven and Kobold armies to ensure the Valley's defense, and defense of the farmers and their villages in the river delta's area.
Given the above, should I also have the sea, or lake shore area of the river delta inhabited by Lizardmen as well?
    Questions, questions.

@@kholtonthebarbarian2590 i thought up a few more 'twists', like Humans living on the large lake (ala The Hobbit), trading fish to the farmers for produce. Now link in several lakeside villages around the lake to bring in 'finished goods', like lanterns, lamps, candle sticks, nails, brads, seasoned lumber, spices, etc... with Caravans hitting the area once or twice a year for even rarer goods, you end up with a self sustaining area that's at peace, even though most of the locals might not trust certain others fully. Given a high level Ranger who's built their 'keep' in the forest, and a high level Druid who's created his 'grove', any Players might end up in the area hoping to foil any plots to assassinate either of them, or some of the village leaders. This is for a more 'cerebral' type of game play. Not your usual 'hack and slash'. Perhaps the Dwarves have called in the Players to deal with a Drow incursion in the depths of their mines. Perhaps the Kobolds have hired the Players to deal with something large in the depths of their caverns. In any case, a good area for low and medium level characters to gain experience, both in diplomacy, fighting off 'monsters', clearing cave systems for the locals, or even just a place to rest up after an adventure and use as a springboard for new adventures elsewhere.

    • @globin3477
      @globin3477 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

@@renarddubois940 No, that's exactly the opposite of how reptiles work. Their bodies and metabolism become slower with colder temperatures, which is why they bask in the sun so much, and why there are very few reptiles in very cold climates.
This is actually true of warm blooded animals, too; our bodies naturally become slower when they are colder. The difference is that warm blooded animals are able to raise their own body temperature through their metabolism, while cold blooded animals have to find external sources of heat.
note that there is no absolute temperature at which all animals function optimally; different animals have evolved to fit different conditions, and so there are many snakes and lizards that can live in temperate climates, even though they must go into torpor during winter.
Also, because warm blooded animals are able to control their body temperature, their bodies often only work right in a very small range of temperature, whereas reptiles and other cold blooded animals can survive dramatic shifts in their body temperature.

and if they stay under the sun too long they'll start to slow down and become sleepy..
of course reptiles would prefer warm environment, like literally everything else, maybe slightly more so than mammals, but if they get slower when the temperature drop, why is that that they always hunt when they're ambushed in cooler places, darker places within brushes or in the water like crocs?

@@hitsuokinawamura Although draconic heritage was always part of their lore in D&D, earlier iterations had them as rat-like, rather than lizard-like. And because mammalian kobolds also exist in various lores(The skaven from Warhammer are one example. But there's also the kobolds from the Suikoden series who are more like beastfolk, and the Burmecians from Final Fantasy IX, who are explicitly rat-folk but are also dragon kin at the same time.). As a result, A homebrew setting I use is inhabited by both mammalian and reptilian varieties, called skaven and kobolds respectively, but what I don't tell the players is, they're actually the same species, but leave that as a detail that a player might ferret out if they ever take the interest to investigate. Skaven would be a common random-encounter in forests and plains, sometimes in the company of Human or Elvish bandits, but Kobolds would usually be found, not in their own warrens, but in Goblin dens.

Also, thanks for convincing me to go with kobolds rather than dwarves. My current character is from a family who bought a noble title using the money they got from selling electrum. I had envisioned that they later hired miners to do the mining while they took on the mercantile function, but kobolds seems a lot more fun to work with.

He felt he needed to earn the praise he received. So along with his training of sorcery he would put in hours of mining till he could no more. Building himself up.
